INTRODUCTIONThe University of Mines and Technol-ogy (UMaT), Tarkwa is an engineering institution noted for producing high calibre graduates. This has been the case over the years due to the qual-ity, dedication and commitment of her workforce and the state-of-the-art laboratories. UMaT has continued to pursue its mandate of providing higher education in mining, petroleum, tech-nology and related disciplines through effective teaching, active research and dissemination of information and for providing professional services through extension activities to the mining and allied industries.

This brochure has been designed to enable interested stakeholders in the mining, petroleum and other related allied industries to explore the capabil-ities of the state of the art equipment

in the newly established Environmen-tal Monitoring Laboratory at the Uni-versity to their advantage. The Environmental Monitoring Labo-ratory is a DANIDA funded Mixed-Tied Credit Facility for the University. The Laboratory has been set up with the aim of helping to change the face of research in the University and for the benefit of players in the extractive industry in particular and for Science, Technology and Innovation in general. The Laboratory has seven (7) units, namely;

Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Air Quality Laboratory, Water Quality and Waste Water Laboratory, Geotechnical Laboratory, Petrological Laboratory, Geophysical Laboratory and Mobile Laboratory.

The SEM provides detailed high resolution images of the sample by rastering a focussed electron beam across the surface and detecting secondary or backscat-tered electron signal. The EDS is also used to provide elemental identification and quantitative compositional information. The resolution of the SEM is <10 nm

The AAS-7000 series features high-sensitivity analysis, flexible system configura-tions, a number of safety features, and a compact footprint, ensuring efficient and comfortable operation. Its advances in optics and a new graphite furnace (GF) design achieve improved lower limits of detection (up to µg/L) for furnace analy-sis. It supports both flame analysis of high-concentration samples and furnace analysis of trace samples, without changing the atomizer unit.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

The Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) is the most ubiquitous ana-lytical technique that combines the separation properties of gas-liquid chroma-tograph with the detection feature of mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample. The GCMS technique is for identification and quantification of organic substances in complex matrices. The Gas Chromato-graph (GC) separates the components of a mixture in time and the mass spec-trometer (MS) provides information that aids in the structural identification of each component on the basis of mass to charge ratio.

The Shimadzu GC enables a wide range of reliable trace analysis utilising the Flame Ionisation Detector (FID), Electrone Capture Detector (ECD), Flame Photo-metric Detector (FPD) and the Flame Termionic Detector (FTD).
