Compagnie de Danse Jean-Réne Delsoin
Compagnie de Danse Jean-Réne DelsoinInternational Artists in Residence from Haiti
Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 | 8pm
International Artists in Residence Compagnie de Danse Jean-René Delsoin culminate a weeklong residency in Southeastern NC with a performance featuring sensational live drumming and dance from Haiti. Delsoin’s work effortlessly blends the precision and grace of classical ballet with modern dance aesthetics and the earthy, expressive drum beats that, centuries ago, migrated from West Africa to their homeland. Delving deep into Haitian culture and traditions, Delsoin’s work emerges as a contemporary, pulsating rhythm, which captures the spirit of Haiti now -- raw and refined, spiritual, powerful and precarious.
Co-Sponsored by UNCW Presents. This program is part of the Center Stage, a new public/private partnership initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the New England Foundation for the Arts.
This residency is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the NC Arts Council.
$20 Reserved Seating ($8 youth/students)

PETER ROWANTONY RICE &THE TRAVELIN’ MCCOURYSThursday, Nov. 29, 2012 | 8pm
Legendary bluegrass masters Peter Rowan, Tony Rice and The Travelin’ McCourys pay homage to the undisputed “Father of Bluegrass” Bill Monroe.
Few artists can claim to have created a genre all their own, but Kentucky-born musician Bill Monroe did exactly that when he added North Carolina banjo prodigy Earl Scruggs to his traditional stringband in 1945. Monroe, Scruggs and the Blue Grass Boys forged new ground, not only creating an entirely unique genre of American music, but forever changing the course of American rock-and-roll with one of their most famous songs, “Blue Moon of Kentucky” - an early hit for an up-and-coming young musician named Elvis Presley.
More than a century after his birth on a small farm in Kentucky, Monroe’s music remains the canon for traditional bluegrass masters and the inspiration for generations of bluegrass-inspired musicians.

MAVIS STAPLESThursday, Feb. 7, 2013 | 8pm
Mavis Staples’ remarkable career began in the 1950’s when her family’s gospel group, The Staples Singers became a household name with popular hits such as “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself”. Since that time, Staples has maintained her gospel roots while blazing new trails -- taking her from the epicenter of the civil rights movement and collaborations with artists such as Bob Dylan, The Band and Prince to her 2011 Grammy-winning You Are Not Alone, produced by Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy.
One of the greatest voices of our times, Staples’ many contributions to the American musical landscape have recently been recognized by the NAACP, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, National Endowment for the Arts and artists and critics from across the music spectrum.

NEARLY LEARWritten & Performed by Susanna Hamnett
The great and tragic story of King Lear told by the King’s closet companion - his own fool. Seen through the eyes of the Lear’s devoted clown, this 90-minute, one-woman version of King Lear is not only poignant and tragic, but mischievous, tender and achingly funny.
Nearly Lear confounds expectations of what a Shakespeare play ‘should’ be and uses exuberant storytelling, music and film, as well as Shakespeare’s magnificent text to take audiences of all ages into the heart of this great story!
