    A NOTE FROM NURSE WENTZEL

    Dear Parents,

This has been a particularly difficult year for head lice andmany schools in the area have been addressing this issuesince the first day of school with multiple cases. We haverecently found a few cases at Williams and ask that youcontinue to be diligent about screening your child. Sharinghats, hair brushes, bike helmets, riding helmets and car seatsis never a good idea. Unfortunately, head lice are not a newissue and the advent of increased resistance has made it aconstant problem in schools, camps and afterschoolprograms.

I am happy to address any questions you might have. TheCenters for Disease Control and Prevention has a very

comprehensive link for the treatment and recognition ofhead lice.http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/

    Thank you!

Sponsoring a Child in the Cafeteria Program at Saint Gabriel School, in Lascahobas, Haiti

In 2011, The Williams School declared St. Gabriel School to be their sister school. A uniquerelationship has developed based on reaching out to children in Haiti by gathering facts about their

geography, history, culture, daily lives, and school. Father Bernard Desras, pastor at St. Gabriel, visitsthe students at TWS every other year and Mrs. Britz, elementary French teacher at TWS, visits thechildren at St. Gabriel twice a year with a small group of volunteers. TWS started its support of St.Gabriel School by sending hand-made greeting cards and bookmarks. It continued by sending funds topurchase goats and blackboards on the local market. The year of the earthquake, the students at TWSgave the funds collected at the Annual Talent Show to the children at St. Gabriel to help with theirlunches. Resources are developed to teach the children about the history of Haiti, and some of thechallenges they face there such as lack of infrastructure, malnutrition and deforestation.

The regular visits to Lascahobas assist with deepening relationships and learning about the Haitianculture. During these visits, the group has ample time to exchange what their pressing needs are. Our

Williams family would like to know about the children in Haiti, and St. Gabriel has identified threeurgent needs as food, education, and health care. Fifty percent of primary school age children are notenrolled in school and food remains a luxury in Haiti. The school consists of 1stand 2ndgrade and 7ththrough 12th grade with a total of 350 students. A plateof hot beans and rice with fresh vegetables is served each school day to the students. Recently Fr.Bernard benefited from two matching grants to develop sustainable vegetable farms to help improvenutrition. He says that the children concentrate more on their studies and have better grades when fed agood balanced meal at school. This might be the only meal the students have since parents often are notable to feed their children. It costs $1.60 per day to feed a child, $35 a month for 22 meals, and $420 ayear. One hundred percentof each donation goes directly to the program thanks to generousvolunteers.

The relationship between St. Gabriel and The Williams School offers our students opportunities toexpand their cultural awareness and appreciate the global nature of relationships and problem-solving. Asense of philanthropy is developed through caring about and serving another school community as wellas through monetary donations. If you feel you wish to help support the community of St. Gabriel, please write your check to SacredHeart Church and add St. GabrielLunch Fundon the memo line.We are looking for a sustainedsponsorship which helps thechildren through the entire school

year whenever possible. Thanks goto TWS and members of the largercommunity who already participatein this program. The parents, faculty, and studentsof the TWS St. Gabriel [email protected]@thewilliamsschool.org
