How exactly does the MicroFIT program work?

1 Before being eligible to earn money from the MicroFIT program, home-owners are required to submit an application and be approved – this is because MicroFIT is administered by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). Our knowledgeable team at BLISS Solar has the expertise to help ensure that you’re eligible to join the program.

Once your application to join the MicroFIT program has been approved by the Ontario Power Authority, you are then eligible to make 38.4 cents for every kilowatt your solar panel system produces for a 20-year time period. (The largest allowable solar panel system wattage size by the MicroFIT program is 10kW).

Upon having your solar panel system set up, the electricity that is produced will be sold to the hydro company. During this time, you will still be purchasing electricity from the hydro company as usual.

The amount of electricity produced would then be tracked by a second meter, and the readings would determine how much the hydro company would pay you for the month. As an example: for one month you earn $350 for electricity that is produced by your solar panel system, and you receive your regular hydro bill of $100. The income from the MicroFIT system would, in this case, help you pay more than just your hydro bill!
