The RTH100 Series of temperature and humidity circular chart recorders uses the proven design combination of bimetallic coils and hygroscopic membrane for the direct measure-ment of temperature and humidity. Changes in atmospheric temperature and humidity are detected by the two elements within the recorder. The bimetallic coil monitoring the tem-perature and hygroscopic membrane monitoring the humidity. Air is drawn through the instrument and over the two sensing elements

by an electrically driven fan. Expansion or contraction of the bime-tallic coil, due to temperature change, causes the pen movement by direct linkage. Similarly a change in humidity causes extension, or contraction, of the hygroscopic membrane and direct linkage again causes movement of the second pen. Please note that control options are no longer offered

DSU Diaphragm Seal Units • Available with a wide choice of threaded or flanged process connections• Wide choice of materials - including Stainless Steel, Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel• Wide choice of additional protective coatings - including PTFE and Tantalaum• Available for direct or remote mounting• Wide choice of designs from all welded to bolted construction• Suitable for a wide range of process media and conditions

The fitting of a diaphragm seal unit to a pressure gauge is recom-mended where the medium to be measured is highly viscous orcontains suspended solids or is potentially corrosive to the Bour-don Tube.

Seal units are normally connected directly to the gauge, but con-nection may be made by flexible capillary, which makes them ideal for remote pressure indication.

Flexible capillary can be used to facilitate the fitting of a gauge in a surface or panel mounting location. Maximum capillary length is 5 metres.

Pressure is transmitted from the diaphragm seal unit to the bour-don tube by a suitable filling medium, the selection of which willensure compatibility with the process and process temperature. Where it is known that the instrument will be used on processessubject to extremes of temperature, the temperature at the tap-ping point should be advised at the time of ordering.

Diaphragm seal units can be fitted to Rototherm gauge types: SPG, RPG, DMC, SPGA and Turret gauges.

Electrical Contact Heads

To provide alarm or control functions, 100 and 150mm nominal dial instru-ments can be specified with electrical contact heads mounted in a clear plastic window which replaces the standard one. The set point can be adjusted to any position on the scale with a removable key. Single and dual contacts systems are available.

Electrical contact heads provide a repeatable switching point, but the absolute accuracy tolerance of the instrument is approximately doubled by the contacts.

Electrical contact heads are availble on models SPG, RPG, DMC and SPGA. Additionally, electrical switching systems are available on all differential pressure gauges.

PTx Pressure Transmitters • Stainless steel construction• Pressure ranges up to 400 bar• DIN43650 plug for easy installation• Choice of process connections

The Rototherm range of pressure transmitters provide a standardised 4-20mA output signal by utilising a ceramic diaphragm strain gauge mounted with an amplifier in astainless steel housing.

The DIN43650 connector plugs into the transmitter, eliminating the need for soldering thus making field interchangeability an easy operation.

Temperature compensated sensors are fitted as standard to auto-matically correct zero and span drift.

Temperature AssembliesThe Rototherm range of temperature assemblies has been designed for all industrial applications and is manufactured in strict accordance with the companies ISO 9001:2000 Quality System. The range includes probes suitable for direct insertion into processes without protective thermowells and full assembles complete with screwed or flanged thermowells and connection heads.

Connection HeadsOur comprehensive range of connecti on heads provides the best environmental protecti on for the electrical terminals on terminal blocks or temperature transmitters fitted to resistance thermometers or thermocouple inserts.

Temperature TransmittersTemperature transmitters are used to convert the primary sensing signal, usually a resistance change for RTD sensors or EMF for thermocouples, into a standard current signal of 4-20mA. We offer a comprehensive range of temperature transmitters suitable for thermocouples or platinum resistance thermometers (RTD), these transmitters may be either head or rack mounted. Temperature ranges may be factory set or user adjusted. (Programmable, intrinsically safe, Hart®, Profi bus® and Foundation Fieldbus® communication versions are available).

Mineral Insulated ThermocouplesA Thermocouple consists of two electrical conductors of dissimilar material connected at one end (the hot junction), the two free ends are connected to the measuring instrument via a reference junction (the cold junction).

The connection of these two materials provides an electromotive force (emf).

Mineral Insulated Resistance ThermometersA Resistance Thermometer is a temperature sensor constructed from resistance wire wound into an element. It is used to measure temperature by means of a change in the electrical resistance with a rise or fall in temperature. The mostpopular wire used in Resistance Thermometers is platinum, although nickel or copper can also be used.

Lagging ExtensionsLagging extensions are available in a wide range of lengths, sizes and fittings. Materials include Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel. They allow the con-nection head to be positioned away from the heat source, or through insulating lagging. Nipple/Union/Nipple and Breakaway couplings allow rapid disconnection for testing, and orientation.

ThermowellsThermowells are used extensively in the power, process, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries. They are used to protect temperatureindicators and sensors from process media and enable servicing or replacement of sensors without the need to shut down plant.

Thermowells are available fabricated from tube or drilled from barstock or forgings, full material certi fi cati on, including original mill and suppliers materials certifi cates can be provided. If required NACE standard MR-01-75 requirements can be met.

Our custom-design ability puts us ahead of the competition for providing thermowells. As part of an assembly or as a replacement, we can provide thermowells of any size, material and specification. As part of our solution we can also offer stress and frequency calculations to ensure you have the correct design for the job.

Information - ATEX Zones (Vapours & Gases)

Safe Area

A domestic domain such as a house would be classed as safe area where the only risk of a release of explosive or flammable gas would be the propellant in an aerosol spray. The only explosive or flammable liquid would be paint and brush cleaner. These are classed as very low risk of causing an explosion and are more of a fire risk (although on rare occasions gas explosions in domestic property are known to occur). Safe areas on chemical and other plant are present where the hazardous gas is diluted to a concen-tration below 0.25% of its lower explosive concentration limit.

Zone 2 AreaThis is a step up from the safe area. In this case it has been decided that in this zone the gas, vapour or dust would only be present under abnormal conditions (most often leaks under abnormal conditions). As a general guide, unwanted substances should only be present under 10 hours/year or 0–0.1% of the time. Explosion safety compliant equipment, should be used.

Zone 1 AreaThese areas are where special or classified electrical equipment must be used. It is expected that the gas, vapour or dust will be present or expected for long periods of time under normal running. As a guide this can be defined as 10–1000 hours/year or 0.1–10% of the time. Explosion safety equipment that has a higher safety level than Zone 2 equipment must be used.

Zone 0 AreaThis is the worst scenario as gas or vapour is present all of the time (over 1000 hours/year or >10% of the time). Although this is the worst case it is very rare that a zone 0 area will be in the open. Usually this would be the vapour space above the liquid in the top of a tank or drum.

Pneumatic Output Temperature Switches provide the switching of a compressed gas supply (generally air) at a pre-determined

temperature. The different pneumatic output switching options are listed below:-

Code 61 - the pilot supply is used to operate a 3 port changeover valve. Bulkhead connections to all 3 ports of this valve are on the top of the enclo-sure as shown in the photo opposite. This switch has a fixed switching differential.

Code 64 - as code 61 above but with an adjustable switching differential.

Code 67 - primarily used when the pilot supply is natural gas as it does not have a continuous consumption of pilot gas. This switch has only two bulkhead connections - the pilot supply and the output. The output pressure is zero below the switch set-point and equal to the supply pressure above it.

Code 68 - as code 67 above but with the reverse output - the output pressure is equal to the supply pressure below the switch setpoint and zero above it.

Code 71 - Primarily used for providing an input into low pres-sure (1.4 bar / 20 p.s.i.) logic systems. This switch has only two bulkhead connections - the pilot supply and the output. The output switch can be configured to provide an output on either a rising or falling pressure.

Code 81 - as code 61 above but for lower pressure operation.

Series 700 Standard Version

These temperature switches are designed to provide electrical output switching for non-hazardous area applications.

A large selection of output switches are available providing the options listed below:-

Fixed or Adjustable Differential Single (S.P.D.T.) or Twin Switch (2 off S.P.D.T. effectively D.P.D.T.)Gold or Silver Contacts

Series 800

The Series 800 Smartstat is a microprocessor controlled switch, trans-mitter and indicator, which enables several instruments to be replaced with a single device. Smartstats are available for the measurement of pressure / differential pressure (P & DP) and temperature (T).

Replacing a transmitter, switches and a gauge with a single Smartstat reduces equipment costs. Additionally there are reductions in documen-tation, installation time/ fittings/cabling, and calibration/maintenance costs.

Increased Accuracy/RepeatabilityThe Smartstat provides greater accuracy and repeatability than a conventional mechanical switch. Very large and very small switching dif-ferentials can be achieved without compromising accuracy.

Ease of CalibrationPushbutton calibration of switch setpoints and 4-20mA calibration can be carried out on site without additional test equipment or tools.

Additional FeaturesBecause the Smartstat is microprocessor based additional features are easily provided through the software including:

• Programmable switching delays - the switching on or off (or both) of the relays may be delayed from 0.5 seconds to 15 minutes. This is particularly useful for preventing unwanted switching due to pressure transients.• Display of MAXimum and MINimum pressures recorded by the Smartstat.• Display of transmitter output in mA.• Reversal of transmitter output 20-4 mA instead of 4-20 mA.• Square-root extraction to provide 4-20mA output proportional to flow using a DP Smartstat.• Displayed units of measurement - can be changed by the user as required.

Series 800 Smartstat Temperature Switch

There are some temperature switching applications that are very demanding due to the need for :-

• Very high (or low) temperatures.• High accuracy and repeatability.• Very large (or small) switching differentials.• High frequency switching operation.• Low frequency switching operation (once per year).• Regular need to change switching temperatures.

Smartstat Custom LCD Display

These requirements may exceed the capabilities of conventional mechanical temperature switches, the Smartstat was designed to overcome these problems.

• Smartstat RTD elements can be used to provide ranges from -200°C to 400°C.• Typical repeatability is 0.1%.• Two independent single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) relays are fitted in the Smartstat, the operating points of which can be set anywhere within the range. The switching differential can be set from 1 digit to 100.0% of range without loss of accuracy.• Being almost entirely ‘solid state’ the Smartstat can provide up to 100,000,000 switching operations. It can respond to changes in temperature more rapidly than a mechanical temperature switch.

• With a mechanical switch testing the operation regularly is the only way to ensure that it is operating correctly. With the Smartstat the continuous temperature display serves to indicate that the device is operating correctly and will switch when required.• Pushbutton calibration of switch setpoints can be carried out on site without additional test equipment or tools.• In addition to its function as a high accuracy temperature switch the Series 800 Smartstat also functions as a temperature transmitter and temperature indicator enabling significant cost savings as several instruments can be replaced with a single device.
