Dear Members,

Wow! What a fantastic, wonderful, amazing, de-lightful summer for British Dressage supporters. I do hope you were able to watch – either at Green-wich, or on TV – the breath-taking tests of our Olympic and Paralympic riders. They were all su-perb, with Great Britain gaining its first ever Olym-pic medals: team gold, and individual gold and bronze. Congratulations also to our Paralympic riders who too won a clutch of gold, silver and bronze medals. There’s more about the Games later in the newsletter.

Looking back over the summer we had our usual marquee at the Nationals which many of you visited, there to enjoy our hospital-ity. As well as all the many National dressage classes we were thrilled to see and applaud our Olympic and Paralympic medal winners. We presented our newly-designed BDSC rugs to Sian Pritchard on Woodcroft Smirnoff, Lucy Pincus on Sheepcote Don Callisto, and Susanna Wade on Fanwick Allsorts.

Once again in a draw of our members Albion very generously donated a bridle, stirrup leathers, girth and numnah to Brid-get Powell and Mrs P Mitchell. A huge thank you to Sherry Belton and Albi-on.

We would love to increase our BDSC membership so

we can continue our spon-sorship of dressage, so if each of you can iintroduce one new member it would really help our cause.

Looking ahead please note in your diaries that Lorrie Sisson is organising a trip to Denmark for the 2013 European Dressage Championships. There will be more about this further on, but let me take the opportunity to thank Lorrie and the rest of the com-mittee for long hours they commit to the running of our club.

Another date to ink in your diary early in the New Year is SSaturday 26th January. That’s when the BBDSC Golden Celebration Dres-sage Ball will be held, again in the Radisson Portman Blu Hotel in Lon-don’s West End. This is a ‘must attend’ and a chance to celebrate our incredible Olympic sum-mer success. The pro-gramme for the evening will include live music from The Beavers who entertained us so well last year. There will be the usual raffle with good prizes, an auction, and some silly games. At 3 pm that afternoon we’ll be having our AGM, then at 7 pm the evening’s party begins with a champagne reception at which certifi-cates will be awarded to those riders who have represented GB here and abroad.

I have so enjoyed meeting many of you, either at Greenwich or at the Na-

tionals, and very much look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible in 2013. Let me use this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas, and to ask you to raise a glass to the victories of our great Olym-pic and Paralympic riders.

Ann Dugdale

There’s nothing to say about the Olympic equestrian events that hasn’t already been said. Superlatives abound, and rightly so. It was magnificent. The setting was inspired, the competition fabulous, and the excite-ment absolutely infectious (not to mention the Mexican wave!). So instead of writing about how wonderful the dressage was, which all the journalists have done far better than I ever could, I wanted to share some of the little moments that made it personal for me over the days that I watched the eventing and showjumping on TV and all 4 days of the dressage in person. Yoshi Oiwa, the delightful Japanese event rider who became an overnight star by unex-pectedly leading the dressage phase – only to fall off at a little drop fence on the cross country course because he didn’t sit up enough! Many years ago I kept my horses on livery with a former Japanese Olympic event rider and Yoshi was based there as a working pupil. Yoshi hacked my horses for me, mucked them out, skipped the fields, painted the fences and generally charmed us with his Japanese manners and huge efforts to learn English. Little did I know that one day his smiling face would be all over the Olympic eventing news. The walk from Greenwich Park station down the street of delightful Victorian terraced houses, all prettily painted and resplenent with their Union Jack bunting. Such a cheer-ful welcome to Greenwich. On day one of the pure dressage Morocco’s first ever Olympic dressage competitor fum-bling in his tailcoat pocket as he left the are-na, only to pull out a miniature Moroccan flag

London Olympics 2012

and wave it triumphantly to the cheering crowds in the grandstand on his way out. He was clearly so thrilled just to have been a part of these magical games. The day we won the show jumping team gold. I was so convinced we weren’t in with a shout that I hadn’t even bothered to follow it on the computer at work. Once I was on the road at the end of the working day I phoned in to “base” for my usual daily chat with my other half in the time between the office and the yard, only to be told that he couldn’t possibly talk to me because GB were about to win the gold medal and he couldn’t miss it. In my haste to turn the car radio on I nearly drove into a truck and got it on just in time to hear us clear the last fence and secure gold. I can’t imagine what the other drivers thought as I bounced and cheered from my driving seat! The delightful American ladies we met in the pub just by the Cutty Sark on the day we won team dressage gold. They’d been planning their trip for over 2 years and their infectious good humour and delight for Team GB’s his-toric win embodied the spirit of everyone we met during our 4 days in Greenwich. The mad Dutch dressage supporters, impos-sible to miss in their bright orange wigs and tail coats, who were on the train to Green-wich every day helping each other apply their Dutch flag face paint. It’s a summer I will never forget. I’m only delighted I was able to get tickets to see some of it for real. But sometimes I still have to pinch myself to believe it was real ....

PONY CLUB CHAMPION-SHIPS 2012. Open Dres-sage Team and Individual Championships.

A new venue once again for the Pony Club. Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire was the host this year for the Pony Club Championships. A victim of the awful weather as so many shows in 2012 have been last minute reorgani-sation was the order of the day. Congratulations to Fiona Lace and her team for making it all happen. The ride off arena was situated near to a childs play area which will be a fantastic preparation for the riders future tests in noisy arenas! Fortunately the rain was patchy and the clouds did not open on us as in previ-ous years.

The Team event was won by The South Oxfordshire Hunt Central second were the Blankney Hunt with Mendip Farmers in third place. The Individual Champion was Daisy Coakley Old Berkeley Hunt (North) in second place Carmen Gammie Dee-side and third was Daniel Brown all the way from Ire-land representing the Killu-tagh Old Rock and Chiches-ter. BDSC member Sophie Moultrie was also placed 5th in the ride off.

We were very pleased to present rosettes and train-ing grants to the value of £100 to four members of the BDSC.

Sheepgate Under 25s Championship 2012

There are many contributors whom we would like to acknowledge for the photos in this edition, in particular: Cathy and Matt Wright for many of the Olympic photos; Margaret Baines for her contribution to the photos from the Nationals and Debi Woods for those taken at Sheepgate and the Nationals.

The BDSC is delighted to have to have spon-sored the BDSC FEI Pony Championship class at Sheepgate this year. The club awarded rosettes and grants to 1st. Charlotte Fry riding Andexer, 2nd Rose Hugh Smith

riding Holsteins

Derwisch, 3rd. R Smith on Siepke’s Celtic.

Charlotte was also the winner in the pony freestyle and the medi-um freestyle. She found Andexer really fun to ride and he

earned 10 for his simple change. Charlotte fin-ished the week with fur-ther wins on Flemmenco and Ghandi before re-turning to school to study for her A Levels. Congrat-ulations and best wishes to them all. Lorrie Sisson

PARA REPORT Everyone involved in Para was deeply saddened by the death of Jane Goldsmith earlier in the summer. Building on the foundations created by Jonquil Solt and Inger Bryant, as team coach, and BD board member rep-resenting Para, she took our paralympic riders into the 21st. Century and was involved with the creation of the successful system of discovery and training which has led to the successes of this year’s parlympic squad.

This year, of course, we celebrate team gold, four additional gold medals, five silver medals and a bronze at the Paralympic Games in Greenwich.

We achieved a medal in every class for the wonderful crowd to cheer.

How can we better that!

At the KBIS sponsored Para Championship Tasie Neale was the highest scoring BDSC member. She won the Grade iv class with 69.35%

Ed Chanin, BDSC Member, tells how dressage became his passion

I live in Mid Devon and from an early age I rode ponies bareback around our farm went to gymkha-nas hunted as much as possible. At nine I started backing and pro-ducing ponies for other people as well as riding my own .

I rode at national level in junior BSJA show jumping; competed in one day events; working hunter pony classes and enjoyed moon-light steeplechases. I represented the Silverton Pony Club in teams at inter-branch lev-el and was a member of Tiverton High school’s show jumping team which qualified for Hicktead twice.

I left school at 16 and rode in point to points and then went to live and work in a National Hunt racing yard at Minehead.

From there I had my first winner in a National Hunt amateur riders’ hurdle race at Exeter, on a horse called Gunther McBride.

In December 2001 age 18 my career was brought to an abrupt end. I suf-fered a near fatal fall when jump schooling at the trainer’s yard. I had a serious head injury and was uncon-scious with a broken back. I was re-suscitated twice and placed on life support for several weeks. I alsohad MRSA and c-diff.

Five hospitals and six months later I was allowed home. I was paralysed on my right side and had constant thera-pies for two and half years to relearn to walk and talk etc. I fought hard to get my life back and I was determined to ride again. My parents regularly took me to a Riding for the Disabled Centre (RDA). This was the best Ther-apy ever.

After a while we bought Druimghiga Shergar just to hack quietly at home. I then decided to try a few days hunt-ing, strapped on with Velcro, it was great fun galloping over the hills, with Dad trying to keep up, but riding with one hand, and not having control of my right side, I had to admit that it was to painful and my muscles were still too weak.. I still wanted to have a go at competing again .I worked hard on my fitness and started training with Shergar at a centre in Taunton. .

My first dressage competition was an able bodied unaffiliated prelim. Mum called the test and ‘got it wrong’. She said that in future I had to learn the test as it would be good therapy. I then managed to qualify for finals at Cricklands. I competed in Riding for the Disabled grade 2 competitions and qualified for the Championships at Hartpury.

I was now hooked on dressage but to progress I needed to look for a bigger horse as Shergar was only 15hh.

barn overlooking the Exe Valley. Roddy was there to greet us wearing his smart British Dressage Support-ers’ Club rug.

I am also extremely grateful to the following for their support,

The Injured Jockeys Fund. Support with training fees.

Through the IJF, I have met HRH Prin-cess Anne a few times

The BEF World Class Para Equestrian Development programme for horse and rider fitness, vet and medical advice, and squad training. Brini-combe Equine for horse minerals and feeding advice. My horse is looking and feeling fantastic since I starting using their ‘Think’ products. Classic Canes who gave me a fantastic sup-ply of quality walking sticks. Phillip Carr, my Farrier who keeps my horse in tip top condition. Mid Devon Dis-trict Council, Lords Meadow Credition for use of the gym. Becky Whitcombe area rep. Sue Carson saddle fitting. Also a big thank you to everyone who has helped in any way towards my funding.

I am getting a website which will soon be up and running, so please have a look to check on my progress.

Edward Chanin

.

My next horse was 16hh. gelding, Broad-stone Western Power. I went to the RDA championships, followed by winning the National Para Talent Spotting at Vale View in Leicestershire. I also qualified for the British Dressage able bodied Prelim and Novice Regional Finals. I then won the Able bodied Pet Plan prelim. at the Area Festival.

I was now getting taller and again the search started for a bigger horse. Rhada-manthus, a 16.3 hh warm blood was found. With him I competed as a self-funded rider in Bishwiller, France. I won all three Para grade2 restricted classes and was the highest placed British rider.

My next goal was to try for the World Class para. equestrian programme. After a tough selection process I was awarded a place. This gives access to top equine and human specialists, with health and fitness support and training at squad sessions.

With Rhadamanthus I was placed 2nd in the KBIS para finals at the Nationals and won the smart British Dressage Supporters Club rug.

I also qualified for European and world Para dressage selection trials.

Sadly Rhadamanthus had to be retired in 2011.

After months of looking we found anoth-er horse after placing a wanted advert on the B.D. website.

Called My Rubicon, stable name Roddy, he is lovely black 17,1hh Hanoverian.

He has a lovely temperament and is very trainable and I hope he is going to be my star horse, I am really pleased with the partnership we have created. My best result to date is finishing 2nd at Bishops Burton international 2** in the Para grade 2 open.

I train with Nina Venables at Taunton and also have regular lessons with Irene Perrett at home.

I work hard on my fitness and go to the local gym in Crediton and also have reg-ular neuro physiotherapy at Hobbs re-habilitation Centre at Shepton Mallet in Somerset.

Once a month I have a training session on a horse simulator.

As I have no rotation of my hip, knee or ankle on my right side I wear a foot or-thotic with leg brace and use knee sup-ports to help with the pain. I use a toe stopper with quick release strap but sometimes I find it easier to ride without stirrups, I use a short rein with a small bar.

My aims are to ride on future teams and progress up to world class performance squad.

My competitions at present are para winter and Hickstead qualifiers for 2013.

None of this would be possible without the wonderful team support from my family and my new wife.

Marie and I were married on 11th May 2012 and we had a fantastic reception at home on the farm, in a decorated

Consult Ramiro, or Curtis as he’s known at home, is the first horse I’ve owned where I felt I could seriously contest the Nation-al Championships. I bought him from Garry Williams in November 2009 and shortly after went to work for the Eilbergs as a working pupil and then went on to take the position of head girl. I spent the following 2 years with Ferdi ensuring that Cur-tis received the best possible start in his training.

After leaving the Eilbergs to go to university I have continued to train with Ferdi whilst being based at Jo Bates’ yard in Ox-fordshire who is responsible for my day to day help and is my ‘eyes on the ground’.

I qualified for the Nationals at the

Addington Region-als winning on a score of 70% de-spite a few rider errors!!

When the day of the Nationals ar-rived I had quite an early start, getting up at 4am to make the trip to the yard and pack the last few things before heading off to Stoneleigh on the morning of the competition.

We had previously travelled to the venue on Wednes-day evening to do the arena walk in order that Curtis could get acclima-tized to the flags, tents and atmos-phere so that when I brought Curtis out for a ride round on the Friday morning he immediately felt quite relaxed. I try to give myself plen-ty of time before any of our tests as I have learnt through experience that Curtis does not

take kindly to being hurried! After about 15 minutes we returned back to the box to allow him to chill out before he had to do his test.

The second warm up was quite straightforward with him still feel-ing quite relaxed and confident de-spite the windy conditions. I was really pleased with the test itself as even with the add-ed interruption of the arena boards being blown into the arena I felt that he really tried his best for me.

Just qualifying for the Nationals itself was a dream come true having attend-ed as a spectator for several years it had always been an aim of mine. To go on to win my class especially from the front was incredible and even more so hav-

ing lots of friends and family there to cheer me on.

I will never forget my first time com-peting at the Na-tionals no matter what else we achieve together, that moment was so special made even more so knowing the jour-ney it’s taken to get there. I owe a huge amount to Curtis he truly is my horse of a lifetime.

2012 COMMITTEE MEMBERS

FAREWELL TO LAURA FRY

Laura and her family have been life members of the BDSC for a very long time and often joined BDSC trips when Laura was competing internationally. One memorable occasion was in Slovenia in 1993 when Laura and Quarryman, as part of the British team, with Emile, Richard and Ferdi, won the silver medal.

It is with much sadness that the committee says farewell to Laura, but it is with great pleasure that we see her daughter, Charlotte, following in her footsteps so successfully.

Our best wishes and condolences go to her family.
