CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME
This past year has been a terrific one for television viewers, often reflecting a monumental year in British history. Throughout our ups and downs, television has remained the medium that brings us as a nation together, allowing us to share moments that will be talked about for years to come.
Tonight, we celebrate the diversity of British creativity and the talent behind the programmes we’ve enjoyed. I’m thrilled to witness how the level of innovation and professionalism in this country has reached higher standards than ever before – let’s celebrate the achievements of tonight’s nominees and of top quality television in all its forms.
One of the most talked about events in recent memory was, of course, London 2012, the coverage of which was watched by an estimated 90 per cent of the population. I’m therefore delighted that Hamish Hamilton, the man who executive produced and broadcast directed the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games and one of the

AS A DIRECTOR YOU HAVE TO STEP INTO THE GALLERY WITH HUGE AMOUNTS OF CONFIDENCE AND A CLEAR DIRECTION.
From The oscars to the Rolling Stones, multi-camera director and executive producer Hamish Hamilton has been bringing the world’s biggest live events to the TV screen for almost two decades. But last year, as executive producer and broadcast director of the opening and closing ceremonies, the recipient of this year’s Special Award worked on the biggest of them all – the London Olympics.
“I was a small part of the most amazing cultural event that’s ever been staged in the UK, a conduit for the talents of people such as Danny Boyle and [closing ceremony creative director] Kim Gavin. It was a humbling experience but exhilarating,” Hamilton recalls.
Taking the opening ceremony out of the Olympic Stadium and into the living rooms of a worldwide audience numbering 900 million was not a job for the fainthearted.
“I get unbelievably nervous and have moments of panic, but as a director you have to step into the gallery with huge amounts of confidence and a clear direction,” says Hamilton. “The stakes are so high – you’re only nano-seconds from complete and utter disaster at any point. The highs are really high but the lows can be really low.”
Aside from the Olympics, Hamilton picks Robbie Williams at Knebworth and U2 in Boston as his highest highs. And the lowest low? That came directing his first live event, a 1996 MTV show in Hamburg.
“We came off air an hour or so early. I had to plead with MTV Network control to take us off air because
a riot was about to break out,” he notes. “At the time, I thought, ‘Career over – I’ve blown it.’ Thankfully, MTV and the German police agreed I had done the right thing.”
Despite his inauspicious start, Hamilton knew he had found his vocation. His second gig – British dance act The Prodigy in Red Square performing in
front of 150,000 crazed Muscovites in 1997 – confirmed it. “The Prodigy’s performance was amazing and the crowd were insane – the police waded in with batons at one point.”
He adds: “At the time, a lot of multi-camera concerts on television were really boring. I used to love going to gigs, jumping up and
down and becoming immersed in the experience, but that didn’t come over on television. With The Prodigy there was so much energy and passion, and I found a way to shoot music live and give it a sense of occasion and energy.”
The Blackpool-born Hamilton’s career had taken a sharp turn and there was no going back.
The multi-camera director has gone on to direct half-time Superbowl shows featuring The Who and Beyoncé, countless MTV and Brits Awards and live concerts by Coldplay and Jay-Z. But his TV career started on a smaller stage. After leaving university, he trained as a producer with the BBC in Northern Ireland and Scotland, working on youth programming. A move to London at the behest of Janet Street-Porter brought work on BBC Two youth strand DEF II, including the Rough Guide To… travel shows.
Tonight’s Special Award goes to multi-camera director Hamish Hamilton, the man who helped kick-start 2012’s inspirational London Olympic Games coverage. Words by maTTheW bell

LIVE DIRECTAND

Hamilton’s first multi-camera experience on BBC Two’s The Sunday Show followed. “I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and it was live to air,” he recalls, but Richard Godfrey at MTV liked what he saw and offered him directing duties on the Hamburg concert.
Like many TV crafts, multi-camera directing is one that Britain does well. “Look at the people directing the outside broadcast and studio shows in America and they’re all Brits. The BBC should take a lot of credit for training people and MTV for giving them opportunities,” says Hamilton.
“I am delighted to be celebrated as a multi-camera director,” Hamilton concludes. “It’s a unique art form in its own right. The BAFTA isn’t just for me – it’s one that all multi-camera directors in Britain can share. We’re a small community of people and I’ve been inspired by so much of their work.”
