National Library for Health

The vision for the National Library for Health is of a highly integrated network based service, delivering an efficient, personalised library and information service to clinicians and patients.

Page 3: Bringing knowledge to bear … Supporting primary care and public health librarians.

Within 5 years

1. More staff will use an NHS library than currently.2. NHS libraries will support patients and carers.3. Libraries will regularly undertake user needs and

user satisfaction surveys.4. There will be greater use of shared services between

libraries. 5. Librarians will spend more time providing

professional services to users (for example working on wards as clinical librarians) and less time on administrative work (cataloguing books; processing inter library loans for example).

Within 5 years

6. Library systems and services will be integrated with the National Programme for IT.

7. There will be greater integration with HE, FE, independent and other health care libraries.

The mission of commissioners is to contribute to better health for the population they serve by maximising the benefit and minimising the harm resulting from the resources they invest.

Questions facing commissioners

1. Have we allocated resources to maximise the benefit?

2. What interventions offer the best balance of benefit, harm and cost for these patients?

3. How do we reach the patients most likely to benefit from the service?

4. How can we maximise benefit?5. How can we minimise harm?6. How can we make the experience of patients as

rewarding as possible?

Page 14: Bringing knowledge to bear … Supporting primary care and public health librarians.

Information needs of commissioners, providers and users

1. Best current evidence

2. The performance of the local service in comparison with explicit quality safety standards and the performance of other similar services

3. The experience of professionals and patients

The knowledge we provide needs to support dialogue -

specialty by specialty, and condition by condition
