“Board of Education election” In the spring of 2010, Brian Goldberg
voted Carter Paysinger in as principal. He passionately told our community that the process used to hire him was the same one used when hiring other recent principals.
Brian voted (again) to hire Carter as principal in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Yesterday, he was quoted as saying, “there wasn’t a process to hire him as the princi-pal”.
Brian Goldberg either has amnesia or a world class problem with the truth. He seems to be long on blame and short on personal responsibility.
He recently tried to connect bomb threats to a lack of SRO’s. I’m in favor of having an SRO program but how can an SRO stop someone from coming onto an open campus before school, after school or on weekends?
BHHS is our only school without a secure perimeter (gated fence). We have one at El Rodeo, Hawthorne, Beverly Vista & Horace Mann.
It may not be a panacea for our high school - but it would be a step in the right direction.
What isn’t a step in the right direction is Brian Goldberg alienating and trying to bully an already generous City Council

Paysinger to run for Board of Education
B e v e r l y H i g h P r i n c i p a l C a r t e r P a y s i n g e r made a s u r p r i s e a n n o u n c e -ment at T u e s d a y night’s Board meeting that he plans to retire as of
June 30 and run for a seat on the Board of Education in the November 3 election.
“At the time I filed the lawsuit against the District last July, my working condi-tions were appalling,” Paysinger said. “The retaliation and discrimination cre-ated an untenable working environment. But I chose to endure the abuse because of my loyalty to our students and to this community. My goal from the start has been to address the problems in
this school district and to effect positive change. Since filing the lawsuit, however, my working conditions have worsened.”
Earlier that day, the District revealed plans to hire a search firm to help appoint a new principal. Board of Education President Brian Goldberg was quoted in a Beverly Hills Courier e-blast saying “I feel it’s really important to find the best person.”
Three Board seats are up in November. They are currently held by Goldberg, who would seek a third term, and Board mem-bers Noah Margo and Lewis Hall, both who would seek second terms. Goldberg has told supporters that he plans to run for reelection.
The filing period for the Board of Education starts in mid-July. A candidate need only be a registered voter at the time of filing. Paysinger currently does not live in Beverly Hills, but says he plans to move in before the filing period.
A 1974 Beverly High graduate, Paysinger is a 35-year teacher and coach who became principal in 2010.
Benedict Canyon Association holds Annual Town Hall Meeting
The Benedict Canyon Association held their 83rd annual meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Monday night.
2014 Benedict Canyon Association
President Hillary Slevin passed the gavel to Matthew Post before an audience of guests, residents, speakers and Fire and Police department representatives. Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz and Felicia Park-Rogers, Senior Field Deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, also attended the meeting.
Koretz read an excerpt from his May 2014 resolution condemning the Brunei government for its adoption of laws that impose inhumane penalties. Both the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bel-Air are part of the Dorchester Collection of properties owned by the Brunei Investment Agency, an arm of the Brunei government.
“As you know, we’ve had all kinds of problems with this hotel’s ownership,” Koretz said, encouraging the Association to find a new location for their meeting next year.
Koretz then shifted to the issue of man-sionization affecting the hillside areas.
“I felt that if we don’t address this legislatively, as the economy continues to grow, it will certainly be multiplied,” Koretz said. “With your help, and sugges-tions from this organization and others, we were able to put together a motion formally making some suggestions. Part of my motion is to set a cap—not on development—but on development that
can happen without any kind of environ-mental review.”
Koretz also discussed the Administration Citation Enforcement program, which he has been working on for over five years. The program strives to alleviate the prob-lem of “party houses” by fining home-owners who host raucous parties.
“There are dozens of quality life viola-tions that will be impacted,” Koretz said.
Several residents, including Jeff Gordon, who lives on Shadybrook Drive with his wife, vocalized their concerns about the increasing problem of aggres-sive driving.
“There are many people in this room who feel that your offices have not really rec-ognized the huge problem of racing cars, motorcycles and truck noise,” Gordon said, addressing the Councilmember. “This is not the neighborhood we moved into 29 years ago.”
Benedict Hills Homeowners Association President Steven Rosenwasser also focused on the issue of speeding cars.
“There are two things that I wanted to mention about the speeding cars. Last summer, we finally had repaving done in our area and we’re very grateful that was finally taken care of,” Rosenwasser said. “It would be great if they could put the lines back at stop signs because people pay no attention now.”

“A Parking Predicament” [Issue 798] As a long-time Beverly Hills resident
and Harvard-Westlake parent, I’m com-pelled to respond to the article, “A Parking Predicament,” and to the misleading full-page paid advertisement against the proj-ect.
The article fails to mention that the proj-ect, when complete, won’t result in any additional car trips on Coldwater Canyon. It will improve traffic flow, though, by add-ing a new southbound lane and two dedi-cated turn lanes. This improvement ben-efits everyone commuting on Coldwater.
Second, both the article’s and the adver-tisement’s headline are misleading. Aside from improving traffic flow, H-W’s park-ing improvement project will enhance safety for the school’s students, parents and guests, and eliminate the need to park on neighborhood streets.
Third, the article prints verbatim claims made by project opponents. The group opposing the project has gone to great lengths to mischaracterize, misinterpret and raise red herring issues – all in an unsuccessful attempt to harm the project.
For the article and subsequent advertise-ment to suggest that Harvard-Westlake’s parking improvement project would impact
Beverly Hills in any way other than posi-tively is ridiculous on its face and laugh-able upon even cursory analysis.
This project needs to be built.
Nancy M. SunkinBeverly Hills
Alex IzBIckI oF SAve coldwAter cANyoN reSpoNdS:
Interesting Ms. Sunkin’s letter tries to negate facts in the article, yet she states none of her own to refute them. Instead, she merely parrots baseless Harvard-Westlake marketing points with no facts to support them. This is a tactic no longer resonating with the growing number of people who see this proposal for what it is: an opportu-nity for the school to expand its operations and sports program at a devastating cost to the canyon and community.
Articles such as “A Parking Predicament” courageously help question the motives of powerful entities such as Harvard-Westlake, who feel they can influence our city planners and city officials with lob-bying money and political donations, and bypass rather than engage their neighbors and express their true motives and plans.
Fortunately, making no fundamental sense eventually catches up with logic, as people are questioning how increasing school parking capacity and operations along Coldwater Canyon will actually decrease traffic on the canyon.
This project is wrong for Beverly Hills and the surrounding canyon communi-ties and Ms. Sunkin’s letter re-enforces the growing public’s realization that the school’s motivations are anything but hon-est.

Save Coldwater Canyon board member and real estate agent Alex Izbicki recom-mended implementing cameras to allevi-ate the speeding problem.
“When I travel to the U.K., it’s really simple—you just put a speed camera and warn the drivers that they’re being nailed if they go above a certain speed,” Izbicki said.
Koretz said that he would like to see the speed bump program—terminated due to budgetary restrictions— restored.
BHUSD backs down following weekly’s PRA request
The Board of Education finally dis-closed billing information pertaining to Tim Buresh’s involvement in producing three videos with KBEV on the Metro issue after a December 2014 Public
Records Act (PRA) request by Beverly Hills Weekly.
Attorney Shaheen Manshoory, who represented the Weekly in this action, sent a second letter to the District on January 22. In his letter, Manshoory stated that
there is “solid legal precedent for dis-close of any payment made by any ‘local agency’ which includes school districts.”
In his letter response to Manshoory, BHUSD General Counsel Vincent Ewing wrote that “the District wishes to settle this matter amicably and avoid a legal dispute.” Ewing enclosed the requested documents, which outline 18 separate payments totaling $7,260 made to Buresh from September 6, 2014 to October 28, 2014 for his contribution to the videos.
“We knew our position was correct and we’re glad that the District decided to reveal information that we knew would be revealed under the Public Records Act,” Manshoory said.
As of press time, part one of the pur-portedly student-produced “Why We Fight” series, published on November 26, 2014, has been viewed 2,799 times on YouTube. Published on December 3, 2014, part two has been viewed 1,358 times on YouTube. Part three, published on December 4, 2014, has been viewed 1,281 times on YouTube. Based on the fees paid to Buresh and the videos’ total number of views, each view cost the District $1.33.
Although the District did disclose the fees paid to Buresh, it chose to with-hold a considerable amount of the billing information contained in the two separate invoice files, arguing it is covered by attorney-client privilege.

Kessler says Horace Mann construction is on track
According to Horace Mann Principal Steve Kessler, the middle school’s construction project is on schedule and slated for a spring 2016 comple-tion date. The general contractor is Pro West Constructors and the construction management firm is Totum Program Management.
“The project is 25 percent complete,” Kessler said. “The structural steel—
which will be a big part of the job— is scheduled for delivery in late February or early March, which is on schedule.”
Every Friday morning at 8:30 am since the project’s inception 25 weeks ago, Kessler has attended a construction meet-ing with BHUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Woods, PTA President Tina Wiener and Citizens’ Oversight Committee mem-ber Bradley Gibbons.

City concludes Centennial celebration City Councilmembers, commissioners, Centennial Committee members, dignitaries
and residents rounded out the City’s Centennial celebration on Sunday afternoon at Will Rogers Memorial Park with a Time Capsule Dedication. More than 30 items were included in the Centennial Time Capsule, which will be buried at the historic park for the next 100 years.
Shaheen Manshoory
“I have been very, very pleased thus far with the professionalism and the respon-siveness of the general contractor and the management firm,” Kessler said. “Thus far we’ve completed the excavation of our parking structure and the majority of the footings have been completed and we’ve started on the vertical walls for our parking structure. I have also been very pleased that we have a sound and an air particulate monitoring device on the proj-ect—those readings have been very low.”
Kessler, who is also a third generation licensed B-1 general contractor, men-tioned that no safety issues have surfaced.
Pressman cast in the pirates of penzance
Aviva Pressman, daughter of the late Beverly High choral teacher Joel Pressman, will revisit the role of Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance this spring at Sacramento Theatre Company.
“It’s exciting because it’s the only show I ever did that my dad directed, so I know he would be very excited about it,” Pressman said.
The sing-er, actor and dancer first starred as Mabel in Beverly High’s pro-duction of The Pirates of Penzance in 2004. D e s p i t e being sick for her call-
back audition with Sacramento Theatre Company, Pressman said she was so well-prepared from playing the part in high school that she nabbed the role.
“[Mabel] is a fun character for me to play because I am a coloratura soprano and most parts written for that voice part are cute, little ingénue girls and I’m more of a funny character actor type. But this role makes fun of ingénues, so I get to play it,” Pressman said.
A two-act comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, The Pirates of Penzance opens at Sacramento Theatre Company on April 22.

David Plouffe and Mayor Lili Bosse
Bosse attends 83rd Conference of Mayors Mayor Lili Bosse flew to Washington D.C. last week for the 83rd Conference of
Mayors, held from January 21st to the 23rd. “It was exciting to be there the week of the State of the Union address by President
Obama,” Bosse said. “Vice President [Joe] Biden came and spoke to us about the State of the Union and a lot of the initiatives that the administration is putting forward.”
The conference agenda included a conversation moderated by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson with Uber Senior Vice President of Police and Strategy David Plouffe. As campaign manager, Plouffe helmed Obama’s campaign in 2008.
“I raised my hand and asked a question of David Plouffe about the fact that a lot of states and cities are talking about regulations for Uber,” Bosse said.
According to Bosse, President Obama and the Conference of Mayors organized a task force to discuss the relationship between communities and their police depart-ments. Bosse mentioned that although the relationship between Beverly Hills and its police department is “strong and positive,” other cities are not as fortunate.
“The conference gives mayors the opportunity to talk to each other and discuss issues that many of the different cities share,” Bosse said.

Our readers discuss why they can’t miss the Weekly every Thursday
“I don’t feel old enough to have read 800 issues! Happy anniversary
Beverly Hills weekly! I love reading your newspaper so much
that I never wait for it to reach the streets thursday morning...I go online
to read it wednesday night!” –lili Bosse, Beverly Hills Mayor
“the part of the weekly I like the best is its coverage of our local sports
teams. when my daughter was at BHHS, she was the varsity soccer goalkeeper. the first thing I did
each thursday was open the paper and read what they wrote about her.”
–Julian Gold, vice Mayor
“what I like most is reading about the community members you regularly interview and profile. It is always
interesting learning more about how folks are involved in civic activities and what motivates them to do so.”
–Mahdi Aluzri, Interim city Manager
“congratulations to Beverly Hills weekly on a significant publishing milestone. like your many other
readers, I value your independence, your professionalism, and your
dedication to serving a community we love.”
–Sheila kuehl, lA county Supervisor
“congratulations to Josh and the weekly on the 800th issue. our
community continues to benefit greatly from its balance in reporting. the
weekly does a great job of separating fact from fiction all the while unafraid to express editorial opinion that I for
sure have disagreed with on many occasions but always respect.”
– linda Briskman, former Mayor
“Beverly Hills weekly has been on top of the local news of our community, providing thoughtful analysis and
accurate reporting for its readers. this paper is vital to Beverly Hills and its neighboring communities, and I am
proud to be a regular reader.” – zev yaroslavsky, former lA county
Supervisor
“Beverly Hills is lucky to be a ‘two newspaper town’ and the weekly is obviously a critical part of that equation. It honors the legacy of
legendary Beverly Hills High School journalism teacher, Gil chesterton,
and has become an important part of our community. I hope it will continue to inform and entertain our residents
for many years to come.” –John Mirisch, city councilmember
“two things: it’s really a ‘home grown –local paper’, with a neighborhood feel. the weekly’s in-depth focus on topics, usually a fascinating
news item, and a profile on a person important to our community.” – Howard Fisher, planning
commission chair

shows.” –Steven Fenton, former Board of

in the community. of course, I am particularly interested in the photos
and articles which highlight BHUSd activities and students’ achievements!
congratulations on 800 issues!” –tina wiener, Horace Mann ptA

ourselves skimming along in superficial, shallow ways – like snorkelers in the
sea. the weekly invites us and pushes us to delve deeper in order to truly
understand our city and community – like a scuba diver exploring the wonders of the
sea. this is especially true for our city’s persian community. No publication shines a brighter light and provides a louder voice
for our vibrant community locally.” – Sam yebri, president of 30 years After
“I look forward to the weekly truly on a weekly basis. It remains unique as it
covers so well our local sports and school news in depth. It also carefully covers
political issues in a sophisticated manner. the weekly is a hands-on publication that
serves our community so very well. It is an integral part of my thursday morning
coffee to gear up for the day. congratulations Josh!! eight hundred
more!!” – Mitchell dawson, former planning

the weekly respects its readers and recognizes them as part of the community conversation. congratulations on your
800th edition.” – Howard Goldstein, Board of education

“I love reading Beverly Hills weekly because it keeps me informed about
the greatest city in the world.” –Steve kessler, Horace Mann

Design Review Commission revisits Lexington Road project Continuing a review process that began at their December 4th meeting, Design Review
commissioners considered a design for a new two-story single-family residence on 1010 Lexington Road, north of Santa Monica Boulevard. Property owner Albert Taban attended the January 7th meeting accompanied by Farhad Ashofteh, the architect, and Daniel Weedon, the landscape architect.
“I appreciate you addressing the concerns that we had at our last meeting,” said Vice Chair Arline Pepp. “I feel that you did address many of those questions. But my overall impression is still that it doesn’t feel like a home. And that it feels very large and bulky.”
At their December meeting, commissioners concluded that the Neo-Classical design required further review and refinement. Commissioners’ comments focused on bulk and mass, a lack of design organization, placement of the house on the lot, neighborhood compat-ibility and façade fenestration. Fenestration relates to the openings in the walls of a structure.
The applicant made several modifications in response to the commission’s evaluation: the façade fenestration was revised to reduce the number of window and door openings; the entry element was reconfigured to an angled roof and realigned so that it is centered on the front door; the chimney was removed from the front façade and stucco was used more generously on the façade.
Commissioners Ilene Nathan and Efi Hubschman vocalized an aversion towards the front entry, stating that it detracts from the house.
“I think it’s a very important house,” said Hubschman. “I kind of like what you did so far. It has to me a certain Art Deco—more than a Neo-classical—style, and I think I would go in that direction because it’s already very elegant and very sophisticated but maybe you can add more modulation to it. The entrance doesn’t do justice to the house.”
Chair John Wyka compared the design to a “Southern California office building” and recommended the applicant consider calming down the rest of the structure to emphasize the entry.
“We weren’t trying to design an office building or a mausoleum,” Ashofteh said. “We wanted to have a transparent building. And a transparent home comes with lots of windows, lots of light and lots of fenestration.”
Unable to reach a resolution, Wyka scheduled a subcommittee meeting to provide Ashofteh with further direction. Nathan volunteered to partake in the meeting. The project will be restudied at the commission’s February hearing.

Chance Comanche scored 26 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked a layup as time expired to seal Beverly High’s comeback from a 10-point deficit with four minutes, 16 seconds to play in a 57-56 victory over Lawndale Monday night at the Swim-Gym.
The Normans (15-5, 4-0 in Ocean League play) took the lead for good when Ryan Manoocheri made his fourth
consecutive free throw with less than one minute to play after making two earlier free throws that cut the Cardinals’ lead to one.
Beverly Hills held Lawndale scoreless in each of its last two possessions, includ-ing their second when it had two shots.
“We played extremely tough,” Norman coach Jarvis Turner said after his team won for the 12th time in their last 13

games. “They showed a lot of determina-tion and will to win.”
Beverly Hills trailed 43-37 entering the fourth quarter and outscored the Cardinals, 20-13, in the fourth quarter.
The Normans led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, then were outscored 14-11 in the second quarter to trail 24-23 at half-time and 19-14 in the third quarter.
Manoocheri added 12, including both of Beverly Hills’ 3-point baskets, Jalen Sands eight, Denzel Holt six, Navid Rafalian three and Trevor Bergher two.
The victory gave the Normans sole pos-session of first place in the Ocean League.
Beverly Hills was ranked sixth in the Southern Section Division 3A poll released Monday, while Lawndale was third in the Division 2AA poll.
The Cardinals’ roster includes Chimezie Metu, a 6-foot-10 power forward who has signed a letter of intent to accept an ath-letic scholarship from USC, and Brodricks Jones, a 6-foot-9 power forward who has signed with San Diego State.
The game had been scheduled for Jan. 21 but postponed because of a bomb threat at Beverly High.
Beverly Hills 67, Santa Monica 52The Normans made 26 of 27 free
throws, with Sands going 12-for-12 and Comanche eight-for-eight, Friday night in an Ocean League game at Santa Monica.
“I’ve never seen my guys that focused for one game,” Turner said.
Beverly Hills led 27-26 at halftime, then outscored the Vikings 17-7 in the third quarter and 23-19 in the fourth quarter.
The Normans were outscored 18-14 in the first quarter.
Comanche had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Bergher 16, making five 3-point baskets, Manoocheri 12 on four 3-point baskets, Sands 12, Holt eight, Rafalian two and Amir Hajirasooli one.
Santa Monica’s roster includes New Williams, a 6-foot-2 senior guard who has
include the Beverly High watchtower priced at $150,000, the El Rodeo caf-eteria courtyard for $35,000, the Beverly High college counseling center priced at $75,000 and the Horace Mann commu-nity center for $1,000,000.
Earlier at the meeting, El Rodeo par-ent and real estate agent Marty Halfon questioned whether the District’s naming policy is being administered effectively.
“The school and the City should be working with people that adhere to the benefactors donating money to a cause
and not looking to get monitory gains from their donations,” Halfon told the Weekly. “We are a resource of wealth financially as well as intellectually and we have failed to use that resource for the benefit of our school system. Why don’t we challenge both the Weekly and the Courier to put together a campaign to promote the fundraising and naming opportunities so that we can achieve the goals that we want to achieve?”
As covered in issue #788 of the Weekly, longtime Coldwell Banker Realtor Michael Libow has secured several prime naming opportunities, including the El
Rodeo courtyard, which was renamed the “Michael Libow Courtyard” in November 2014 after Libow’s $30,000 donation. Halfon feels that Libow’s donations have not been congruous with the properties’ values.
“Having this dialogue is very impor-tant,” said Board Vice President Howard Goldstein. “I appreciate giving advice, but let’s have a plan to get involved. I know you talked about El Rodeo—there’s a list, pick something, put your name on it.”
Several Board members expressed that the problem is a systemic problem, not a
“Michael Libow” one. “I don’t think that awareness is neces-
sarily the issue—because I think people are aware,” said BHEF President Ronit Stone. “Unfortunately, there are very few people like Michael Libow who step up to voluntarily call us and say ‘I want to give you money, what do you need?”’
Donation amounts are recommended by the BHEF and approved by the Board of Education.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bid-ding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not au-tomatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the high-est bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insur-ance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale post-ponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 018545-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postpone-ment information is to attend the scheduled sale.FOR SALES INFORMATION: (844) 477-7869 C L E A R RECON CORP.
