The programme support an exchange of students between the three countries in 5 different fields namely food technology, management, language and culture, agriculture, and tourism management. Ever since, the relationships and activities between MFU and Malaysian higher education institutions as well as the Royal Thai Consulate have expanded and strengthened. 2. In brief, academic activities between MFU and Malaysian higher education institutions can be divided into (a) exchanges of students (b) exchanges of staff (c) conferences and co-organisation of conferences (d) other matters a. 1. Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) has started academic collaborations with the higher institutions in Malaysia for the first time in 2010 under the umbrella of the Malaysia Indonesia and Thailand M-I-T Mobility Programme (currently known as AIMS—ASEAN International Mobility for Students), initiated and supported by the government of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The programme support an exchange of students between the three countries in 5 different fields namely food technology, management, language and culture, agriculture, and tourism management. Ever since, the relationships and activities between MFU and Malaysian higher education institutions as well as the Royal Thai Consulate have expanded and strengthened.

a. Exchanges of students - AIMS programme

Under AIMS, MFU is the only university in Thailand that has been selected by the Office of Higher Education Commission to join the programme in the field of Food Technology. The participating universities under the programme in the field of Food Technology includes 3 Malaysian universities and 1 Indonesian university namely 1) Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia, Malaysia (MOU-signed) 2) Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia (MOU-on signed) 3) Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia (MOU-on process) 4) Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia (MOU-on process)

MFU together with University of Sains Malaysia and BINUS Indonesia have been awarded iAwards 2012 in contributory to the exchange of the students and knowledge within ASEAN. This award was introduced to provide recognition and to support the IRO (International Relations Office) through the operation of this exchange programme.

Table below summarises the number of exchange students between 2010-2012 between MFU and three participating universities in Malaysia. In total, 22 inbound students from Malaysia have joint MFU for a period of one semester with a credit transfer while 13 students from MFU have experienced in research at Malaysian Universities. It is noteworthy that MFU have gained popularity among Malaysian students reflecting from an increase of the number of inbound students that rises each year.

- Other exchange Beside the exchange of students under AIMS, the exchange of students have been initiated to cover other area of studies.

1) In 2012, MFU have sent 1 exchange student from School of Liberal Arts to USM.

2) In 2012, MFU post graduate students from School of Agro-Industry went to UiTM to conduct research.

b. Exchanges of staff Outbound - April 2011, Dr. Phunsiri Suthiluk and Dr. Suthiwal Setha, lecturers

of School of Agro-Industry, visited Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Universiti Sains Malaysia. The purpose was to visit MFU exchange students and discuss the collaborative research projects with partners.

- June 2012, Dr. Niramol Punbusayakul, lecturer of School of Agro-Industry, visited Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Universiti Sains Malaysia. The purpose of visit was to discuss collaborative research projects.

- January 2013, Dr. Niramol Punbusayakul, lecturer of School of Agro-Industry and a graduate student conducted a research “Optimization of Anthocyanin Extraction Using Pressurized Extraction Method” at Universiti Teknologi MARA.

Inbound - January 2012, Professor Dr. Fatimah Abu Bakar and delegates from

Faculty of Food Science and Technology ,  Universiti Putra Malaysia visited MFU and discuss the collaboration and MOU.

- February 2013, Professor Dr. Zaibunnisa Abdul Haiyee, Universiti Teknologi MARA conducted a research “Characterisation Of Egg Yolk Cholesterol:B-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)” at Mae Fah Luang University.

c. Conferences and Co-organised conferences - The International Conference on Agriculture and Agro-Industry 2010 (ICAAI2010) : Food, Health and Trade was organised and hosted by MFU.

- Internat ional Seminar on Agro-Industry: Malaysia-Indonesia-Thai land Mobil i ty Program 2011 (ISAI-MIT2011) was organised and hosted at MFU in November 2012. The delegations are from the participating universities under the AIMS.

- The University-Community Engagement Conference was co-organised together with Thammasat University, and University of Sains Malaysia in January 2012, at Le-Méridien Chiang Mai. Dr. Romyen Kosaikanont, Dr. Panom Winyayong, Ms. Nuya Leewanich, and staffs attended the conference.

d. Other matters November 2012, MFU ASEAN Youth Ambassadors delegation visited universities, organizations in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Royal Thai Consulate, Penang has warmly welcome.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a public university, established in 1969, USM was first known as the University of Penang, before the University’s Act came into effect on 4th October 1971. The university has been developing and expanding since its inception, which started with the enrolment of 57 science based students. USM has also become a well-known university locally and internationally.

USM implements the broad-based School system where related subjects are grouped into schools of study and within each school, the policy combines subjects and to organise courses in such a manner that a degree of specialization in a chosen subject was possible. The University has always been aware of the need for both research and teaching to remain as receptive as possible to the demands of society, and that the centres and units would provide better opportunities for integration and networking. Background Background relationships between MFU and USM in many aspects as followings:

1. Student exchanges 1.1 Through M-I-T programmes (or AIMS), 7 students of MFU have exchanged with 11 USM students between 2010-2012. (please see table below) 1.2 One student from School of Liberal Arts, MFU, have been in exchange at USM for a period of 1 semester in 2012 academic year.

2. Exchanges of staff

Lecturers from School of Agro-Industry have visited USM for a review of progress of student’s research in exchange in 2011 and 2012.

3. Conferences and co-organised of conferences 3.1 MFU hosted two international conferences which the representatives from

USM have also attended namely 3.1.1 The International Conference on Agriculture and Agro-Industry

2010 (ICAAI2010) : Food, Health and Trade was organised and hosted by MFU.

3.1.2 Internat ional Seminar on Agro-Industry: Malaysia-Indonesia-Thai land Mobil i ty Program 2011 (ISAI-MIT2011) in November 2012. The delegations are from the participating universities under the AIMS.

3.2 MFU co-organised the conference with USM and partners The University-Community Engagement Conference was co-organised together with Thammasat University, and University of Sains Malaysia in January 2012, at Le-Méridien Chiang Mai. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is a public university established in 1931 as the School of Agriculture, today, UPM is a research oriented public university and it’s located in central Peninsular Malaysia. UPM offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a research focus on agricultural sciences and its related fields. The university is ranked in 360th position of universities in the world in 2012 by QS World ranking. The university aims Graduate School of Management to be the top business school. UPM aims to bring a group of highly skilled and professional lecturers from various backgrounds and nationalities who wish to understand and help local and international students.

UPM has more than 2,000 academic staff which many of them are recognised internationally as leaders in their fields. The management and admission of graduate studies are certified by the MS ISO 9001. The quality graduate education offered by UPM is reflected by the presence of more than 2,500 international students from more than 50 countries, who constitute more than 30% of the total postgraduate enrolment. Currently UPM offers 79 bachelor, eight diploma and 47 postgraduate programs at the master’s and PhD levels - there are over 250 fields of study in all. Background MFU and UPM have actively collaborated in many aspects as followings:

1. Student exchanges through M-I-T programmes (or AIMS).

2. Exchanges of staff 2.1 Visit of MFU lecturers from School of Agro-Industry to UPM in 2011 and

2012 to review progress of exchange students research and discuss research collaboration.

3. Conferences MFU hosted two international conferences on Agriculture and Agro-Industry on 2011 and 2012 which delegations and participants from UPM also attended the conference.

4. Other matters 4.1 MFU ASEAN Youth Ambassadors delegation visited UPM on November

2012. The delegations were warmly welcomed. UPM has graciously compliment the group with lodging and allow the participation in cultural activities organised by the UPM.

4.2 The MOU between MFU and UPM has already been approved by the MFU academic meeting in April 2013 and will be signed by the time of this official visit. The MOU is broad and UPM already notify that they would like to discuss on the possibility of collaboration in Tourism Management.

CV Summary Aini Ideris (April 2013)

Professor Dr. Aini Ideris graduated with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1979 from Universiti Pertanian Malaysia - UPM (currently, Universiti Putra Malaysia), MVSc in Avian Medicine (1981), from University of Liverpool, England, and PhD in Avian Medicine (1989) from UPM. She continued with post-doctoral training at the University of California, Davis, USA (1990-1992), and at Cornell University, USA (1993), under Asian Development Bank Fellowship, where she was involved in molecular pathogenesis research. Professor Aini’s research interest is in avian respiratory and immunosuppressive diseases, related to the control of poultry diseases and development of poultry vaccines. Her research has led to the commercialisation of Newcastle disease and fowl pox vaccines, in 1995 and 1996 respectively. In 2005, her research team successfully commercialised another important poultry vaccine, i.e. infectious bursal disease vaccine. They also developed rapid diagnostic methods for avian influenza, Newcastle disease and Mycoplasmosis. Currently her team looks into the development of halal vaccines, utilizing several different carriers, in the bioreactor. Professor Aini is a Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences (FIAS), Fellow Academy of Sciences (FASc) Malaysia, Founding Fellow of Malaysian College of Veterinary Specialists (FMCVS), and Fellow of Malaysian Scientific Association (FMSA). She is actively involved as Council Member of Malaysian College of Veterinary Specialists (MCVS), Board Member of Malaysian Cancer Research Institute (MCRI), and Executive Member of National Cancer Council (MAKNA). She is also a member of Board of Governance for International Medical University (IMU), and Putra Business School. Professor Aini received national and international awards throughout her career, as a lecturer, researcher and professional. Among those awards are; the prestigious National Academia Award (AAN) 2010, under the category Innovation and Commercialisation of Products, for her successful innovation and commercialisation of Newcastle disease vaccine (ND V4-UPM). AAN is the highest achievement award conferred to Malaysian academics. She was also selected as one of top 10 researchers for National Innovation Award 2012. Recently, she was elected as Inaugural member of Hall of Honour, World Veterinary Poultry Association, for her contributions to scientific research, poultry health education and training, poultry health systems in developing countries and for outstanding leadership.

She also has a long administrative experience. She was the Acting Head, Department of Veterinary Clinical Studies, in 1989 and 1990, Chairman of Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1992 to 1998, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, for 9 years, from 1992 to 2001, Dean, School of Graduate Studies, from May 2001 to November 2008, and Chairman of Malaysian Postgraduate Deans Council from 2005 to 2008. She is also chairman/ member of various committees at Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), and Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry (MOA). Currently, she is the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Universiti Putra Malaysia (since December 2008), and Chairman of Malaysian Deputy Vice-Chancellors’ Council (Academic and International).
