Brief Industrial Profile of Ramban District
1. General Characteristics of the District Ramban is an important town on Jammu–Srinagar National Highway 1-A, about 150 kms from Jammu and is situated on the right bank of River Chenab. Earlier, Ramban was a Sub-District of District Doda, with Tehsil Ramban and Tehsil Banihal as its constituents Ramban District has been carved out of the erstwhile District Doda which had the distinction of being second most largest District of the state because of exceptionally unique and most difficult of all other districts due to its typical Himalayan position and hilly terrain. Keeping in view the backwardness, remoteness and needs and aspirations of the people, the government in one of its landmark decisions in the history of J&K Governenances declared Ramban as independent District. Thus the District Ramban came into being on 01-04-2007, since then its functioning independently. The splitting of erstwhile District Doda into three new districts of Ramban, Kishtwar and Doda came to be seen as great administrative requirement of time.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
Ramban district has an average elevation of 1,156 meters (3792 feet). The boundary lines of Ramban district have come to be drawn from Patnitop on its south, Assar on its east, Gool on its west and Banihal on its north. River 'Chenab' also known as 'Chanderbhaga' river passes through the district. National Highway-1A (now 44) that connects Jammu with Srinagar passes through the district. Ramban is located at 330 14 N and 75017E longitudes with an altitude of 1000M from MSL. The boundary lines of new district have come to be drawn from Patnitop on its South, Assar on its East, Gool on its west and Banihal on its north.
1.2 Topography
The climate of the District varies according to the altitude . The temperature rises as high as 42 0C in the low lying areas between Step Mountains and seldom goes below 1.50C in the high altitude areas. The district is all mountainous with very difficult rough and terrain. The working season in a year remains restricted to eight months because of typical weather conditions of the districts. Ramban District, situated at the height of 1156 meters, is a newly
formed district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir of India. It shares borders with Patnitop on South, Assar on East, Gool on west and Banihal on north
