Brief Industrial Profile of Dharmapuri District
1. General Characteristics of the District:
Dharmapuri is a district in Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The district came into existence from October 10, 1965. Dharmapuri is the district headquarters. Dharmapuri town is historically called
"Thakadoor".
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
It is located between latitudes N 11 47� and 12 33� and longitudes E 77 02� and 78 40�. The total geographical area of Dharmapuri District is 4497.77 Sq Kms, i.e. 3.46% of Tamil Nadu.
1.2 Topography:
The inhabitants of the District speak different languages. The predominant communities found in this area are the kongu vellalars, Kapus, Lingayaths, Okkaligas, Baliya Chetties, Oddars and Scheduled Castes like Holeyas and Madigas. The weavers of this area mostly belong to Sali Chetties.The Baramahal area comprising eastern part of the Dharmapuri taluk constitutes Telugu and Tamil speaking communities, majority of whom belong to Vanniars,The Malayali tribe is inhabited in the Chitheri Hills areas. Among the Scheduled Caste population Adi-Dravidars and Arunthathiars form major share who scattered throughout the district.

Soil
The Soil type ranges from black to mixed loam; Red sandy soils are seen in Harur Taluk. Black and loam soil are found in Dharmapuri Taluk. Generally the soil is low in Nitrogen and Phosphate content with no marked variation between Taluks.
1.3 Availability of Minerals
Dharmapuri district is endowed with sizeable reserves of granite. High quality black granite is available in Pennagaram, Harur and Palacode blocks. Quartz is available at Kendiganapalli Village of Pennagaram Taluk, A.Velampatti of Harur taluk and Pethathampatti of Pappireddipatti Taluk. Another High value mineral available here is Malibdinum, which is identified as a good conductor. It is available in Harur.

3. INDUSTRIAL SCENERIO OF DHARMAPURI DISTRICT
Dharmapuri district is known for its mango, coconut oil, seeds, tamarind, pulse, tapiaco cultivation and cacoon prodution. There is good scope for the industry that is willing to manufacture energy food for all age groups and rice mills and sago
industries. Traditional industries like silk reeling, silk twisting, rice milling,
manufacturing of readymade garments, power looms, sugarcane crushing and tamarind processing in dharmapuri district. In fact readymade garment cluster at dharmapuri block point to the importance of these industries in the district economy.
Nearly 19 granite polishing units are in the district. Under the control of industries department 10 co- operative societies are functioning in the district.
The District has achieved self sufficiency in the milk production and the surplus milk can be used to produce dairy products.
The mango pulp is gaining popularity and in good demand in international level. The is a good scope for the units like mango pickles, softdrinks, chocolates and chutneys.
The coir based industries are popular in this district and having good demand for coir products in india. Biofertilizers is one of the natural fertilizers, which is nitrogenous matter, which is immensely required for the growth of agricultural plant by virtue of their multifold superiority in soil replenishment with minerals essential nutrients of the plant tissue. The future demand of biofertilizers, is increasing at a tremendous pace, which necessitates the inclusion of the more unit

to be established. Vermiculture converts organic waste into resource. Vermiculture can be used to process the residual waste of agricultural products. In recent years, the demand for this is very good in the Districts like, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur.
There is good scope for coming up large scale industries in granite cutting and polishing, blue metal jally, value added products from tamarind, tomatto and tapiaco starch, milk chilling and readymade garmentsin the district.
The district has 4 engineering colleges, 8 arts and science colleges, 6 polytechnic colleges and one medical college.
District provides enough scope for development and growth of industries engaged in textiles,garments,granites,matches,silk based products and wooden articles.
The district has two co-operative sugarmills , one is at palacode block and another one is at harur block.The Indian bank is the lead bank in the district.
