In 1948 the Lithuanian FranciscanFathers purchased 64 acres on theKennebunk River in Kennebunkport,Maine from the Campbell estate. The grounds included a mansion andauxiliary buildings. The mansionwas converted into a monastery andchapel. The auxiliary buildings wereused by guests. In the 1950's theFranciscans built a boys' high school, which included dormitories. Duringthe summer they also had a camp for Lithuanian boys. After the highschool was closed the building wasconverted to the Franciscan GuestHouse. They also added an outdoor salt water pool.

The Guest House isa short walk to the beach to the Townof Kennebunkport, which has restau-rants, art galleries

The childrens faces say it all!

The Sodyba - Homestead Each familys sodyba (homestead - also called namas, daik-tas) comprised not only buildings, but orchards and gardens, corrals and ponds as well. Generally, Lithuanians tried tomaintain the integrity of their property, and it was not thecustom to distribute their wealth amongst their children.Properties passed intact from father to a son, usually the eld-est, but possibly a younger son. Other sons received a cash payment, daughters were i sleistos i marcias (sent to bedaughters-in-law), and other sons - i zentus (as sons-in-law).

We have some knowledge of the16th to 19th century homesteadslisted in manorial inventories, andfrom this we learn about the manyfarms that were not broken up asinheritances or passed to one son, but where several married sonslived and worked on their fathersfarm with their wives and children.Such large families could at onetime encompass 40 to 50 individu-als, and the sodyba containedmany separate buildings - some for each married couple to sleep in,for bread-making , beer-brewing,for laundry, for the storage andthreshing of grain, etc. This kind of farm might contain upwards of 20 buildings. Often, these included anold-style dwelling with an openfirepit, as well as a new-stylehouse with a brick furnace, larger

windows and more convenient layout, as well as several ofeach kind of outbuildings: the kletis (granary), tvartas (cat-tle barn), jauja (drying barn), maltu-ve (handmill room), and pirtis (sauna). The entrance to the sodyba was enhanced byleafy trees, both fruitful and ornamental. Lithuanian folk-songs celebrate the sodyba, referring to it as u-kininko dvaras(the farmers estate).Gloria Kivytaite OBrien is a frequent contributor to Bridges. She grew up in Brooklyn, Annunciation Parish.
