Bridges

What is a bridge? Why do you build bridges?

When did we start to build bridges?

Page 2: Bridges

Different kinds of bridges

• Beam bridge= balkbro• Arch bridge= bågbro• Suspension bridge= hängbro• Cable–braced bridge= snedkabelbro

Page 3: Bridges

Beam bridges

The beam bridge is the oldest kind of bridge that we know

It has the simpliest structural form among bridges, it is a straight beam that is supported by a pier at each end

Page 4: Bridges

Beam bridges

Pros:• Very cheap• It is easy to buildCons:• They can’t be built too

long without support

To make the bridge more steady you could either use piles

or you can use truss structure

Page 5: Bridges

Arch bridges

The arch bridge is also very old. The Romans built arch bridges 2000 years ago.

Page 6: Bridges

The arch bridge is more complicated than the beam bridge, but it can carry a lot more weight

and is often used for train traffic etc.Pros:• It can carry more than a

beam bridge• It can be built longer than a

beam bridgeCons:• It is more expensive than a

beam bridge• It weighs a lot so it is not

possible to build it too long.

Suspension bridge

The first suspension bridges were built 1300 years ago in China.

Page 8: Bridges

The suspension bridge is very complicated. On the other hand it can be built longer and higher than other

bridges and can handle a lot more weight.

Pros:• You can build it very

high ad very long• It is the longest bridge

type of them all.

Cons: • It is complicated to

build• It is very expensive

Page 9: Bridges

Cable-braced bridges

• The cable-braced bridge is one kind of suspension bridge, it has a very similar design and function

• Since it is so similar to the suspension bridge, it has the same pros and cons

• It can’t be built as long but maybe it is better looking, what do you think?

Questions to work with

• When was your bridge built?• Why was it built? • How was it built?• What is the history of the bridge?• Has anything special happened around the

bridge? Accidents, been in a movie etc.
