fFor some, the first attempt at mar-riage falls through, and they are left with the decision to grow old alone, or to try it again. But a second wedding is never the same as the first. some traditions seem silly the second time around, or not applicable at all. But just because some things aren’t the same doesn’t make a sec-ond wedding any less important than a first.

In 2010, michelle Jean odekirk, from Fond du Lac, met Tom Joseph Verbos, who was originally from Kenosha, but was living in Fox Lake, via match.com. michelle had already been married once before, and Tom had two previous wed-dings, so agreeing to tie the knot again was an interesting experience. They were married two years later on June 23, 2012 at the Crystal Ball-room in st. John.

“Honestly, it all went better than we had hoped,” says michelle Verbos. “I think it is because our only real expectation was that we say ‘I do’ and become mr. and mrs. Verbos. Nothing else really mattered so we really had very little stress. ”

“Because it wasn’t a first wedding for either of us

we kept it as simple as possible. We wanted it to be mem-orable, tasteful, and meaningful. We both know we ac-complished that by taking out some of the traditions that would have seemed ‘tacky’ for people our age,” remarks michelle. For example, michelle was not given away by her father, as she had been at her first wedding. They chose,

instead, for michelle to walk on her own to meet Tom, and then the couple proceeded down the aisle together.

michelle and Tom also chose to abandon the traditional bridesmaids and groomsmen. Instead, their daughters, mi-chelle’s two and Tom’s one, stood up for them, each choosing their own dress in more-or-less matching colors and walking down the aisle ahead of their parents. “It was important to us to have them walk together as we were joining the family and it seemed appropriate they should walk side by side together as new sisters,” says michelle. “We didn’t do the garter toss ei-ther… way to tacky for an older couple!”

They did, however, keep the presence of a “flower girl” and “ring bearer,” in a sense. The ring bearer was michelle’s three-year-old great-nephew, and his 27-year-old mother, michelle’s

niece/god daughter walked with him as the flower girl, just as she had when she was five, in michelle’s first wedding. overall, mi-chelle and Tom had just over 100 guests, at their outdoor wedding, trying to keep the party small.

The easiest part of their wedding was finding their venue. They stumbled across the Crystal Ballroom in st. John while driving

michelle offers a bit of advice for those brides and grooms who are still planning their big day: “Don’t stress about things… especially the small things. enjoy the day for what it is meant to be, a celebration. Have fun, and smile a lot! The most important thing is enjoying the moment. You can’t plan every detail of life so it is important to enjoy each moment.” she also adds “make the most of the day, but remember it’s the entire journey that is the most important.”

around on a Friday night looking for a good fish fry. “They had an entire package available and we had the ceremony, reception and dance all onsite. They even provided the cake (we got to pick the flavors), the decorations, and the music for the dance,” says michelle. With an 11 a.m. ceremony, lunch reception and small dance, the whole ordeal was wrapped up by 4 p.m. and the newlyweds got to spend their evening alone to-gether with dinner at the Cedar Lodge.

A simple mix of tradition and non-tradi-tional made the Verbos wedding a fun events for michelle, Tom and all others involved. michelle rates her wedding a 10, simple, tasteful, and better than expected. Planned in only a few months, michelle says that she can “honestly say it was the happiest day of my life. I felt as if I could fly that day and for several days after. I just could not stop smiling.”

dition is slowly falling by the wayside. At many weddings, people are more interested in talking amongst themselves than cake-gazing. Besides, once people taste the ice cream cake, it will make up for not having been able to see it beforehand. The cake can sit out for 15 to 30 minutes before it is cut, so there’s plenty of time for avid cake-watchers to get a peek before the cutting.

Also, provided the photographer is noti-fied of the cake cutting ceremony, there is ample time for them to get in and get pho-tographs, so everyone can see the cake and it can be preserved for eternity.

Ice cream is heavier than regular cake; won’t that limit the size and complexity of the design?

Kelley’s Country Creamery can build cakes as high as three tiers, but a single cake isn’t the only option. They can also make sheet ice cream cakes for the guests, so the cutting cake can be smaller, or you can order Kelley’s signature Diamond Drops for the guests, the ice cream variant of a cupcake.

the big decisions The decision to get married is the first of many big decisions you will be mak-ing in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away:

• Pick a date. Talk with your fiancé and family (and your fiancé’s family) about potential wedding dates to en-sure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part.

• Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly influ-ence the cost of your wedding.

• Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan for a little wiggle room for unex-pected expenses.

• Choose your flowers. once you set the date, discuss with your florists which flowers are in season to help narrow down your selection. You may love tulips, but if you have a winter wedding, they may be hard to come by, and may be more expensive.

• Book the entertainment. Do you want a DJ or a live band? Talk with your fiancé about your music prefer-ences, as well as the types of tunes you want played at your reception to keep your guests on the dance floor.

before the big day• Create a website for your wed-ding to keep guests informed of events and for easy access to registry informa-tion. Provide accommodation infor-mation for those guests traveling from out of town.

• Insure your engagement and wedding rings against loss, damage, theft or mysterious disappearance. Ac-cording to a survey conducted by Jew-elers mutual Insurance Company, 44 percent of married women either don’t insure their engagement ring, or don’t know for certain whether their engage-ment and wedding rings are insured.

The easiest way to avoid this chaos is to keep an open communication with your photogra-pher and have them explain everything.

Below is a list of common ques-tions answered by three local pho-tographers to give brides and grooms some ideas of the things they should be asking when they attend their con-sultations.

What are some things that you get asked a lot when you meet with brides planning a wedding, and how do you respond?

Q. Are you available?

A. mary Quick, of Quick & smart Photography says: We have multiple photographers available to accommo-date almost any date.

Q. How long have you been doing weddings/how did you get started?

A. Aileen Andrews, of Can’t stop Photography says: Fifteen years. It runs in the family, my father, royce edwards, was wedding photographer for 18 years, both he and I were/are self-taught.

Q. Do we have to do formals before the wedding?

A. Kris Alt, of studio one Photog-

raphy says: At my studio, the answer is no. However, I have found that the big reason for not doing the formals before the wedding is, ‘I don’t want him to see me in my dress until I walk down the aisle.’ This is solved by hav-ing an empty church (obviously before we want to start the formals), with just the groom at the altar, with the bride being escorted into and down the aisle by her father, then her father and I leave, giving them the only 10 minutes of their wedding day to them-selves, and the Groom sees her in her dress and can appreciate her beauty in the dress she selected.

Q. Can I get a picture of that?

A. Aileen Andrews says: Yes!

Q. Please show us examples of your wedding work, albums, etc.

A. mary Quick says: We have many examples on our Web site. You may make an appointment to come in and look at samples of albums.

Q. Why do you shoot from on top of a ladder?

A. Kris Alt says: Well, first of all the most obvious [answer] is, I’m only five feet tall. The second [answer] is, when photographing the ‘formals’ in front of the altar, pews are not the most at-

tractive thing in a photograph. shoot-ing up a person’s nose is also not very pretty. You can ‘take a few pounds’ off a person just by your camera angle.

Q. How many photographers will be at the wedding?

A. mary Quick says: We typically have three photographers at a wed-ding. The photographers depend on their availability.

Q. How much equipment do you take to a wedding/what type of equipment do you use?

A. Kris Alt says: It really depends upon what the bride and groom want on their wedding day. I usually rec-ommend studio type preliminary por-traits (on a studio background) with studio lighting. This can be achieved either coming to my studio before (sometimes after) the wedding or I can take a background to the church. I always say ‘I have backups for my backups for my backups.’ In other words, a lot of equipment.

Q. What’s your turnaround time?

A. mary Quick says: Proofs will be available online and in a proof book in two weeks.

Some things that photographers want you to have set in stone before contacting them are:

-What is your budget for wedding photogra-phy for your wedding?

-How large is your wedding party?

-What are your venues?

-What type of coverage are you looking for? How long would you like us to stay?

-Is there any type of restrictions or special permissions needed for your ceremony? Are there any special circumstances or spe-cial requests that we need to know about.

-What is the color theme?

-Are both the Bride and Groom parent to-gether or are there a divorce? If divorced, can they be next to each other or do they need to be separated?

-Are there going to be special surprises anything extra special that one would want photographed. For example, releasing of butterf lies/doves? A loved one that may have passed away special tribute during cer-emony or dance?

-Where is the reception going to be and what is the timing between dinner/ceremony?

As a wedding photographer, what things might the bride and groom inadvertently do that would irritate you?

Mary Quick says: Tardiness and not sticking to a time table makes the wedding stressful for both the bride, groom and the photographers.

Aileen Andrews says: I am pretty easy going. most churches do not allow f lash during the ceremony, so when people use it, it bugs me a bit. outdoor weddings are a bit different. If there is a videographer I tend to talk to them so we eliminate being in each others pictures as much as possible. I am not a big fan of being in others photos. I usually take the pictures first (because the couple is paying for professional photos) and then let the “paparazzi” take theirs and I am ok with that. This is a special day and if time allows everyone should share history in the making.

What are your favorite wedding photos to take?

Mary Quick says: Bride and Groom to-gether alone for portraits is one of our fa-vorites. The bride getting ready before the ceremony is a favorite. The relationship and warm moments between loved ones that is expressed all during the wedding.

Aileen Andrews says: my favorite shots are the bride with her bridesmaids, in addi-tion to the groom and his groomsmen. I do enjoy borrowing the parents of the bride for a photo with the groom, as well. I like to keep things fun and try to mesh with the couple’s personalities to make those special memories. every wedding is different, every couple is different.

Kris Alt says: my favorite wedding pho-tos to create are those of just the bride & groom, alone, with no one else in the room/area. I can get them to relax with me and create some exceptionally beautiful memo-ries with just letting them “chat” between the two of them.

What should brides and grooms look for as the mark of a good photographer when trying to select one?

Mary Quick says: It is important that your photographer is easy to get along with. They are with you more than anyone

else that day. They should have experience. The availability of professionally printed high quality images for the family and friends. A good photogra-pher should have knowledge of posing and lighting of individu-als and groups.

Aileen Andrews says: First, can they afford them. There are many great photographers in the area and all have their own f lare. Look at samples. This helps the bride and groom know the style of photographer. The couple needs to feel comfort-able around the person they hire and comfortable with what they are paying them for. some pho-tographers are based on hours, some just ceremony and charge more for dinner and grand march. All this is needed to be taken into consideration and

if there are additions to anything, get it in writing. Have a contract that both you and the photographer each sign which includes any extra charges.

Kris Alt says: A true professional photog-rapher will either have a studio or the cre-dentials to go along with it. one of the most important credentials is if they belong to the Professional Photographs of America. They would have insurance, just in case something would happen. This also shows that they want to advance themselves IN the field of professional photography and are not just ‘shooting your wedding for extra cash.’

Nedrebo’s offers a wide selection of colors and fits, and can match, find or make just about any vest color to a dress purchased elsewhere, because though wed-dings are so often referred to as “her big day,” the guys are just as important.

In addition, many of the sales associates have been with Nedrebo’s for many years, and are all profession-als. Jennifer slattery, the store manager of the Fond du Lac and oshkosh locations has been with the compa-ny since 1997, and she’s seen every possible situation, and knows how to get out of any pickle.

Planning:“most people come in six months ahead

of time,” says Jennifer. “But we can also provide service on a last-minute basis.” In addition, they also offer modifications on those orders that are placed well in ad-vance as the wedding approaches, just to make sure that everyone is fitting in the tuxes as close to perfectly as possible.

“Prices can be found in any range,” says Jennifer. “We can find something within your budget if you’re on one. If money is no object, we carry a line of designer tux-edos that tend to be on the higher end of things. There is truly something for every-body.”
