resource for brides seeking unique wedding favors, wedding decorations and wedding supplies, offer these tips for calculating how much you’ll need of key reception items:

beveragesWith all the dancing and celebrating they’ll be doing, your guests are sure to work up a thirst. It’s important to calculate the right amount of beverages to buy so you don’t run out. A good rule of thumb is to plan for one drink per person, per hour. You may need more or less depending upon the make-up of your crowd. Lots of kids? You’ll probably need less alcohol and more soft drinks. Plenty of adults who love a good party? You may need to adjust the amount of alcohol accordingly. Here are some averages to give you a starting point:

• Beer - Three to four beers per person.

• Champagne - Two glasses per person (mostly for the toasts).

• Wine - Three quarters of a bottle per

person. One bottle of wine or champagne yields about six to seven glasses.

• Soft drinks - Three to four servings per person. A 2-liter bottle holds seven to nine drink servings.

It’s always good to err on the side of caution and order more than you think you will need - about a third more is standard. Check with your distributor before you order; some will allow you to return unopened bottles.

foodIf you’ll serve cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the reception, limit this time to an hour or 90 minutes - you don’t want guests filling up before the main event. Estimate three hors d’oeuvres per person, per hour - roughly five per person for the entire time. If your reception will be a cocktail/hors d’oeuvres event without a sit-down dinner, increase your calculations to 12 pieces per guest. If you’re serving a sit-down dinner, one plate per person per course should be

your starting point. You may choose to ask the kitchen/caterer to have some extras on hand in case anyone requests seconds or some last-minute guests arrive.

For the wedding cake, simply tell your baker how many guests will attend and they can recommend the size cake you’ll need. It’s good to estimate more servings than invited guests as some may want seconds or bring last-minute additions to the party. If you’ll serve desserts other than cake, estimate one to two servings per guest.

napkinsPersonalized or plain, linen or three-ply, wedding napkins are a wedding reception must-have item. It’s hard to imagine going overboard and having too many napkins, but it could happen - and if it does you may find yourself using those napkins at your first anniversary celebration. To ensure your napkin buying is on target with your needs, follow these guidelines:

• Two to three cocktail napkins per guest for the bar area.

• One cocktail-sized napkin per guest for the cake table.

• One and a half dinner or luncheon napkins per guest at the meal table if you won’t be using linen napkins. For example, if you’ll have 100 guests, plan for 150 dinner napkins.

finally, favorsThis one may seem obvious - one favor per guest. In reality, however, you need to allow for breakage (What if someone drops a box of favors on the way into the reception hall and several shatter?) and guests who may ask to take an extra favor home for a relative or friend who wasn’t able to attend. Increasing your favor purchase by just 10 percent won’t cost that much more, but could allow you to send guests home with an extra favor or two. ●

Weddings today are a combination of something old and something new.Brides and grooms are finding ways to mix beloved classic traditions with exciting new trends. Everything from the cake to the dress to the photos is undergoing a makeover.

dressWhen it comes to wedding gowns, strapless reigns.

Some brides choose one shoulder strap or capped sleeves that only cover the shoulders, but most go sleeveless, said Sharon Paul, bridal supervisor at Edith’s Bridal and Tuxedo Junction, 9 S. Main St. Removable sleeves are optional.

Dresses tend to have textured fabric, chiffon, flowers, lace and pleating. Removable belts, bands and flowers are popular, she said.

Brides tend to choose colors that best suit their skin tone. They’ll opt for off-white shades like ivory, although diamond white is very popular, she said.

C h a p e l - l e n g t h or long trains are big. Brides on destination weddings may select a shorter train; a dress that’s comfortable and easy to move around in, said Paul. But they won’t sacrifice elegance for convenience — they still want a special wedding dress.

Few brides wear their mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dresses nowadays. Instead, they’ll have a piece of the dress incorporated into their gown, or they’ll wear their grandmother’s or mother’s jewelry, she said.

“They want to have their own unique look,” Paul said.

The long, poofy veil is losing momentum to the cage veil — a smaller veil made of English or Russian netting that covers a small portion, half of or all of the face. It’s clipped into hair with a jeweled comb or flower, Paul said.

Gowns without a train vary from $150 to $400, she said. The average dress with a train costs $900. Edith’s most expensive gown costs more than $2,000.

Paul said brides seem willing to cut elsewhere to afford their dream dress.

Paul recommends brides allow at least nine months for their dress. It usually takes four to six months to arrive after ordering, and fittings take place three months before the wedding.

It helps that many dresses now have lace-up backs to allow room for weight loss or gain before the ceremony. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

bridesmaidsSingle-shoulder strapped dresses and flowers are popular for bridesmaid dresses, said Judy Barber, supervisor in the bridesmaids department at Edith’s Bridal.

Today, many brides choose the color but bridesmaids choose the style, she said. Cobalt blue is the most popular shade, and solid colors reign over patterns.

Barber said Edith’s sells a lot of floor-length bridesmaid dresses. knee-length and shorter skirts are available.

The average dress costs $175 to $180.

Barber recommends ordering dresses five to six months before the wedding to allow time for production and fitting.

tuxedosMen are going gray for their weddings.

Gray is the latest and most popular trend in wedding tuxedos, said Rebecca Pluim, manager of the tuxedo department at Edith’s Bridal.

“Everybody’s booking it because it’s something different,” she said.

Black pinstripe still has followers, and browns are big for fall weddings, she said.

Men are also choosing lighter fabric to stay cool during summer.

Pluim said suits are growing in demand because they’re attractive and cost less than tuxedos. An average tuxedo rental costs $125, but a suit costs about $65 to rent.

She added that Edith’s has more than 25 tuxedos in stock and numerous accessories. Edith’s is the only shop in the region that owns and keeps all its tuxedos in-house.

Pluim recommends ordering tuxedos four to six months in advance, and men should be measured six to eight weeks before the wedding.

ringsWhite gold is a popular component in rings, although yellow gold and two-tone shades are making a comeback, said Ron Emanuel, owner of The Goldsmith, 177 S. Main St.

The Goldsmith can handle the entire ring process under its roof, from designing jewelry to making it.

“A lot of people are tired of the same old thing,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of custom work.”

White metals, including platinum, are a big hit, said Craig Gruening, owner of krail Jewelry, 105 N. Main St. Grooms request contemporary metals such as tungsten and titanium. They cost less than gold, he

said.

The most popular diamonds tend to weigh .5 carat to one carat, and round cuts and

princess cuts are the most requested, Gruening said.

Emanuel said he’s taken numerous requests to remake an old diamond, such

as one from a grandmother’s ring.

On rare occasions, brides request sapphires and rubies to accent their rings, Emanuel

said.

For best results, brides and grooms should allow two to three weeks for production and order

of rings, Emanuel said. Three to four weeks is encouraged

for customized rings, Gruening said.

photosWedding photos have gone high-tech.

Prints are always

available, but most couples now request digital copies, said Gary Scheer, owner of Scheer’s Photography, 501 Bittersweet Lane, Waupun.

They don’t need to wait until the prints are ready to see their pictures. Customers will receive a password so they can see their photos online. Scheer said photos are posted to a special online account where clients may see their photos anytime, anywhere from a computer or cell phone — any device with Internet access. Couples may give their password to family or friends who’d like to view the pictures.

“They can see their photos when they come home from their honeymoon, or even when they’re on their honeymoon,” he said.

The most popular — and least expensive — photo package doesn’t even involve paper. For a little over $1,000, couples may receive unlimited photos burned on a DVD. Scheer said the files are large enough that customers can have prints made anywhere at a later date.

Scheer said many clients choose this option to save money. When they have more to spend, they’ll order prints.

Posed wedding pictures are disappearing, he said. Posed pictures of the bride and groom, wedding party and family are still a must, but most pictures are shot with a photojournalistic style. Photographers shoot the action as it unfolds, be it the exchanging of the rings or the sharing of wedding cake.

Scheer recommends contacting a photographer nine months before the wedding. Friday weddings are the easiest to book; Saturdays are the busiest.

co-owner of Linstrom’s Catering, 953 E. Johnson St. They’ll choose a small tiered cake for wedding photos but serve different dishes for dessert.

Some wedding dinners feature sheet cakes of different flavors. Others serve cupcakes, miniature cheesecakes and éclairs instead of cake, she said.

Linstrom said it’s not necessarily cheaper than choosing a tiered cake, but it gives more options to the happy couple and guests.

dinnerReception dinners still typically feature two entrees and two to eight side dishes, said Jeff Duehring, co-owner of Eden Catering, 115 E. Main St., Eden.

Appetizers may include stuffed mushroom caps or meatballs. Entrees vary since Eden Catering is part of Eden Meat Market. Selections include fish, chicken, beef, ham or turkey. Eden Catering has prepared everything from sliced beef or turkey with gravy to pig roasts, he said.

Potatoes are the most popular side dish, followed by vegetables and salads. Duehring said customers may choose from more than 100 selections on the Eden Catering menu.

Couples want the traditional chicken or beef with a twist, said Linstrom. Instead of baked chicken, they’ll order chicken prosciutto or chicken Florentine. For beef, they’ll request a London broil.

“Tradition is so important in this area,” she said. “But this generation wants to pull away from the norm and put their own touch on the trends. That’s a great example of old and new working together.”

Both Eden Catering and Linstrom’s Catering can prepare special meals for guests who have food allergies. Vegetarian dishes are available.

Customers have options to save money. They may choose to have Eden Catering cook, deliver, serve and clean. Some guests will opt for delivery only, while others just pick up the food and take care of setup and cleanup themselves, Duehring said.

More couples choose strolling dinners, Linstrom added. The meal is set like a Sunday brunch buffet, with different stations handling meats, pastas, salads and other side dishes.

She said Linstrom’s will offer tastings to help couples choose their menu.

Eden Catering can cater a wedding quickly if it’s an emergency, but Duehring recommends contacting a caterer six months to a year before the ceremony, especially if it’s a Saturday wedding.

When planning weddings, couples should first plan their church or ceremony site, followed by the caterer, Linstrom said. Wedding plans can derail if the church and caterer are not available on the set date.

Linstrom said couples should consider their finances and focus on what they want in a meal. Don’t think too much about what every guest wants or likes. It’s the bride and groom’s special day; planning it should be fun and memorable, not stressful, she said.

“You’ll never please everybody. It’s impossible. Be realistic,” she said. “A wedding should be about joy and happiness. It’s so important to just enjoy the process.” ●
