In just a couple of months the bell will ring, everybody will run out of the classroom, throw their books in the air (leaving them on the ground), and outside a band will be playing summer songs. It’s summer time! written by Loes van Fulpen

In High School Musical it might be like this, but we all agree that we love those last seconds of class before the start of summer, whatever way you celebrate it.But... Eight(!) weeks of freedom... What to do, what to do... There is no money to go on a vacation for eight long weeks, no money to visit all the festivals, no money to buy all those super cute summer dresses, and no money to buy a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every day. Who says money cannot buy happiness..?

To be able to actually do everything mentioned above next summer (2013), you could spend this summer working. Pick a good job, so that you will not even no- tice you are working and it will feel just like a vacation. We will help you by doing this!

Ultimate Summer Job In A Foreign CountrySo let’s see.. A summer job that has to resemble a va- cation? Let’s go abroad then! The sun is shining, little children are screaming your name, you are the most popular person on the camping site, and you get paid for it. Yes, that is what we can call a good summer job:

“Who says money cannot buy happiness..??”

Being in the entertainment team of a camping site! What are the duties for this job? A lot of young families with children go to camping sites during the summer, but the parents want to relax during their vacation as well. That is what the entertainment teams are for: To keep the kids busy, to entertain them! What to ex- pect? To give you an impression: morning gymnastics, crafts, theatre, music, evening shows, etcetera. So, in a nutshell: A lot of fun!

You will be working with people of your own age, and in the evenings there will be enough time to party.

GET READY FOR SUMMERJOBS!

Page 7: BREWED - May 2012

NHTV GENERAL | BREWED

(Just make sure you are on time for the morning gym- nastics!) Camping sites can be found all over Europe, so this kind of job is a good opportunity to see more of the world and maybe even learn another language. For more information: www.werkenonderdezon.nl

Ultimate Summer Job in The NetherlandsWhen you google “summerjobs”, the first jobs thatpop up regard working at a call centre. Not very cool, trendy, hot, or fun, to say the least... Therefore we took a deeper dive into Google and we found some interesting jobs. What about working at the beach as a waiter or waitress? Or, if you have the right background, even as a cook! For more information: www.strandnederland.nl

Did you ever think of going to a festival and getting paid for it? There are multiple jobs available at festivals, either for catering, ticket selling, or assisting in the building up of the festival. Whatever you are into, technical or social, at festivals there is a suit- able job for everyone. For more information: http://www.eventure-pd.nl

Actually all these jobs include that what you wanted to go doing if you had the money! Going on a vacation, visiting festivals... And you will even get paid for it! To buy a million summer dresses, however, I would suggest you working at a clothing store so that you will get a discount. And if you love ice cream, well, that should be self-evident by now!

Let’s start preparing for the summer!

GET READY FOR SUMMERJOBS!

ULTIMATE LIP SMACKER TEST

The weather is supposed to be hot this spring. It is supposed to make you thirsty. Itis supposed to make you want to drink soda, which is supposed to make your lips dry. Well, in case all of this indeed happens in Holland, you have to be prepared. written by Loes van Fulpen

That is why we want to introduce you to the soda lip smackers, including Coca Cola, Coca Cola Vanilla, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Fanta Strawberry, and Fanta Pineapple. Some of you might think this is disgusting, and BREWED does not want you to spend money on thingsthatturnouttobeaflop.Thereforewepresentto you: The ultimate spring Lip Smacker test!

In order to make this Lip Smacker test relevant I tried the smackers in all circumstances. When eating sandwiches, check. When drinking from a water bot- tle, check. The feeling of my lips, check. Let’sstart this adventure!

“It’s like eating and drinking at the same

time.”Coca Cola Lip Smacker

When you open the Coca Cola Lip Smacker you im- mediately smell the scent of Coca Cola, the scent of the Haribo Coca Cola bottle candy. The colour of the smacker looks disgusting: Dark brown. Thank God

05

Page 9: BREWED - May 2012

06

ULTIMATE LIP SMACKER TEST

you do not see the colour of any of the smack- ers on your lips. The directions of the smackers state: “Apply generously to lips as often as you like.” So, that is what I did.

“Bubbles, you there after all?”

Applying it on your lips brings you back to your youth immediately. It has exactly the same taste as Kinder Cola has. I started to eat a sandwich and I realized that thisstuff isamazingandverytimeefficient: It is likeeating and drinking at the same time! And the bread crumbs do not stick to your lips! But I also wanted to know whether it would stick to my water bottle or not. So, I drank some water and guess what? It does not stick! And the after-taste of my water suddenly took on Colaflavour.Mmm...Afterawhilemytonguestartstotinkle; Bubbles? You there after all? However, the directions are right; You have to apply it generously and often, because the flavour leavespretty fast.

Coca Cola Vanilla Lip Smacker

The Coca Cola Vanilla smells a little bit ‘softer’ than the Coca Cola, probably because of the vanilla. When applying the smacker to your lips it feels as soft as butter. At the beginning it tastes the same as the Coca Cola Lip Smacker, but then it suddenly changes into acookiedough taste!Theflavour lastsonyour lipslonger than the previous one also. Moreover, it even is hard to get rid of it! That is probably because of the butter-like structure of the smacker, and for this reason the breadcrumbs stick to your lips as well. And

yes, it does stick to your water bottle. But that would happen with normal butter as well... And vanilla is made from butter... Or not?

Sprite Lip Smacker

Sprite? Where are you? The smacker does smell fa- miliar. But is it Sprite? Let’s apply it to my lips... Again familiar. But is it Sprite? I need a second, and even a third opinion since it could be that I cannot taste properly anymore after having tested the other two smackers already. After a small discussion the firstthing we could conclude is that the smacker smelled like lemon. Not sincerely Sprite, but lemon. And then it appearedtoallofus, thiswasnottheflavourofSprite, but of yellow wine-gums!

Fanta Pineapple Smacker

Thisisthefirstsmackerthatreallytastesthewayyouexpect it to taste. From the moment you apply it to your lips, youknowyoutastepineapple.Theflavourlastspretty long as well and crumbs do not stick to your lips. When drinking water the pineapple taste mixes with the water you are drinking which is delicious! You can decide for yourself how strong you want to make your pineapple juice byapplying more or less of the smacker on your lips!

Fanta Strawberry Smacker

Another mystery. It smells like strawberry candy spray, if you can remember those from you youth. When applying it, it is sweet, really sweet. Do I like it? No not really, it is just too sweet. It makes me sick, even though I love strawberries. Too bad... Next!

Page 10: BREWED - May 2012

07

Fanta Orange Smacker

Yes, this one definitely smells like orange. And ittastes like orange as well! The smacker does not stick and when drinking water it tastes like eating a tan- gerine. This one is not too buttery and not too fruity. It even lasts on your lips for just the right amount of time. Perfect!

“So, my advice: Change the label to settle business!”

From this research it can be concluded that Fanta Or- ange is the ultimate winner! Closely followed by Fanta Pineapple. Sprite is not what you would expect it to be and the difference between Coca Cola and Coca Cola Vanilla is just too small. Fanta Strawberry we will not even mention.

The Boyfriend

Inspringbutterflieswillstarttoflyaroundinyourtum-my, which might lead to kisses. So it could be good to know which lip smacker the boy likes best to get kissed with. For this test the boy did not know with which lip smacker he would get kissed. The result: “I didn’t like the two lip smackers with the Coca Cola tastes. It’s just like kissing a girl who ate a whole bag of Haribo Coca Cola candy. Not very pleasing. The Sprite one I didn’t really care for either. The Fanta flavours, ontheotherhand,Ilikedalot.Myfavouritewas Fanta Pineapple. This one was the most fruity out of the threeFantafla-vours,which I like. Iwouldn’tmind getting kissed by a girl wearing one of the Fanta lip smackers.”

So, girls, to conclude: Get the Fanta Orange and Pineapple to please you and the boys!

A lovely Exchange Program

Linda, a friend of Simi, made this drawing of Simi and Inga. It means a lot to both of them.

Simi Leuverman, a NHTV International Tourism Management student, went to Latvia with an exchange program. During this exchange he met a beautiful Latvian girl named Inga and they fell in love. During his time in Latvia, Simi developed a deep appreciation for the Latvian culture which would not have happened had he not fallen in love there. written by Anne-Loes van Prooijen

It is Simi’s love story I want to share with you. Simi traveled to Valmiera, a small city located in the northern part of Latvia and home to approximately 30.000inhabitants.Duringthefirsttwomonthsofhisexchange program, Simi only had a small handful of classes. This gave him a lot of free time to see the country and explore the culture of Latvia. During his stay, his roommate was Blazej, a boy which he was on good terms with.

“One day, when Blazej entered the room, he told me at least twenty girls were having a party in our kitchen! So,whenIfinishedthemovieIwaswatching,Icouldnot control my curiosity any longer. I went to the kitchen to get some juice and I saw that indeed there were twenty girls in our kitchen, and no guys! They were all Latvian so I didn’t understand a single word of what they were saying. I greeted them in English, which drew the attention of a girl named Una.”

Simi told me that not all of them are immediately interested in a guy that doesn’t speak Latvian. Some of the girls even were too shy to speak English themselves. English is not a common spoken

language in Latvia, with the exception of the younger generation, which has a basic knowledge of the language.

“Then another girl entered the kitchen.” Simi continues his story. “The girl’s name was Inga. Together with her, I continued my conversation with Una. Then one of them had to go to the bathroom, so I offered the girls to use my own bathroom. When entering my apartment, we found my roommate Blazej playing on his guitar and we all talked for a while until the girls invited us to a party in their dormitory. So, Blazej and I went to their dorms and played games, talked a bit, and danced with the girls. Throughout the evening, I began to feel some real chemistry between me and Inga. Love must have been in the air. By the end of the evening,IngaandIkissedforthefirsttime”.

They were not aware of it at the time, but for Simi and Inga, this was the beginning of what would become a beautiful relationship. After that night, Inga and Simi started to see each other more often. Inga showed Simi a lot of the Latvian culture which Simi was enthusiastic to learn a lot about. In spite of that, he did not have any problems to concentrate on his exchange program. Inga helped him a little bit with managing things at school, but most of the time she knew as much as he did. The one thing she really helped him with was gaining social contacts with the Latvian students.

“By the end of the evening, Inga and I kissed for the f irst time”.”

Page 16: BREWED - May 2012

TOURISM | BREWED

13

The exchange program inevitably would come to an end eventually, and so would the relationship they had formed. Therefore, Simi and Inga made an agreement to end their relationship by the time Simi had to go back to The Netherlands. Simi’s friends and family made plans to come to Latvia to visit him, but Simi had not told anyone at home that he had a girlfriend, because it would only be a temporary relationship. He talked about this to Inga and they decided to tell his friends and family about their agreement, because Simi really started to like Inga more and more.

On Sinterklaas, the 5th of December, Simi gave Inga a ticket to join him in the Netherlands for the New Year. She accepted it and looked forward to visiting Simi in his own country. They were comforted by the fact that, although the exchange program soon would come to an end, they would see one another in the near future. In the Netherlands they could see how it worked out between them in a different environment. Inga gave Simi a very special present: A photo-album containing all the pictures they made in Latvia. Inga wrote texts underneath every picture about their experiences the moment the picture was taken. On the last pages she didn’t put any pictures. She wrote that there was enough space for more pictures and experiences; Shewashopingtheycouldfill thesepagestogetherbecause she did not want to end her relationship with Simi.

Simi and Inga talked about their feelings for each other and eventually decided to stay together. At the moment Simi is in New York for his internship. Naturally, he bought a flight ticket for Inga so soonthey will be together again.

Simiwoulddefinitelyrecommendotherstudentstogoon an exchange program. “It is a lot of fun and you get to know yourself a lot better. Love it is not something you plan. I did not go to Latvia with the intention to findsomeonetofallinlovewith.Atfirstthedealwassimple: Inga and me would have a nice time together and cherish the moments we had until I would leave. But after several weeks, we fell in love.”

Simi will never forget his experience in Latvia and getting to know Inga. The photo-album Inga gave Simi still serves as a symbol of their relationship and of the days when they were just starting to get to know one another.

“Love it is not something you plan”

Special thanks to Simi Leuverman.

5 good spring reads

Page 19: BREWED - May 2012

16

In the midst of spring, when the weather is just nice enough to sit outside, a good book can be appreciated by everyone. But every time there is that same question: Which book to read? And actuallythisisquiteadifficultquestionto answer, since not everybody likes the same books. written by Charelle Casander.

In this article youwill find a selection of five booksthatIrecommendyoutoreadduringthisfirstweeksofsun, or else later in summer. It is not a list of personal favourites - my favourite book of all time will always be Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Neither is this listatopfive, sinceit isnotpresentedtoyouinanyparticular order. The books mentioned here are all quite different from each other, and therefore at least one of these books should interest you when reading this article.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (2005)“It had never occurred to me that our lives, which had been so closely interwoven, could unravel with such speed.” Never Let Me Go is a book that takes you to another world without you being aware of it. The story is told by Kathy, who tells about her past days at Hailsham, a closed boarding school in England. At Hailsham, students were never allowed to leave the school-grounds and were told they were special. It is only years later that Kathy gets to understand why she and her friends Tommy and Ruth had to go to Hailsham and what the future holds for them. When going through Kathy’s life, you will get aware of what is going on exactly at the same time Kathy herself does. In my opinion this is a must-read, as well as the movie adaptation (2010) is a must-see.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (1937)“There he found the ring he had picked up in the passage and forgotten about.”A classic, which means there is a big chance you have already read this book. In that case I would say: ‘Why not read it again?’ It really cannot harm. The nice thing about this book is that everything is described with so much detail that you can perfectly imagine Tolkien’s fantasy world. (In other words: No movies needed here, not even when Martin Freeman is to play Bilbo.) At the same time the details are not dragging you through the book which would make you want to skip pages. If you want to escape the real world, this is the book to read!

ThePerksOfBeingAWallflowerbyStephenChbosky(1999)“I ate the brownie, and it tasted a little weird, but it was still a brownie, so I still liked it. But this was not an ordinary brownie. Since you are older, I think you know what kind of brownie it was.”This book is a real page turner, and I could write pages about it, but in fact there is not that much to tell. The book is about sixteen-year-old Charlie who writes letters to an unknown schoolmate, which is you. There is no plot, it is just about Charlie’s freshman year

“I ate the brownie and it tasted a little weird.”

Page 20: BREWED - May 2012

and him trying to ‘participate’ in life. But you will keep reading, as you want to know how Charlie’s life continues, in spite of it not being your business in any way. The book certainly is a good read, but the ending has a quite heavy turning point. I recommend reading it because of the eagerness the book creates to continue reading, the characters that are so similar to people you know in real life, and because its movie adaptation will be in cinemas this year and I am sure thisisgoingtobea‘readthebookfirst’-case.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (2002)“How to commit the perfect murder was an old game in heaven. I always chose the icicle: The weapon melts away.”This is not the kind of book I would normally read, but I am glad I did, and so I recommend reading it. The book makes you start wondering about things you never thought of before. The story is told by Susie, a fourteen-year-old girl who got murdered and watches the world from heaven, observing how her family continue their lives without her. Everything Susie observes is, in fact, quite tragic, since her family gets messed up a serious bit. But when Susie tells youabout it, youat first donot noticehowmessedup things really became. Watched through the eyes of a child, the tragic events do not seem that bad at all and exactly that is what this book makes a fun and easy read.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (2008)“They’ll either want to kill you, kiss you, or be you.”The Hunger Games trilogy is said to be the ‘next Twilight’,andafterreadingthefirstbook,IthinkIcanconfirmthat.ThenwhyamIrecommendingittoyou? That is because it is quite a bit better than Twilight, although it still is no Harry Potter. The book is about Katniss, a girl of sixteen years old, who lives in a kind of future United States called Panem. Panem exists of ‘The Capital’, which dominates Panems other twelve districts. Every year, The Capital organizes the Hunger Games, for which a teenage boy and girl are selected from each of the twelve districts and go intoanoutdoorarenatofighttothedeath.Yes,thatisquite cruel and no, the book does not spare you the details. Naturally, the book is accompanied by a love story, which I am not going to spoil anything about, but I will tell you that nobody is sparkling! If you have not seenthemovieyet, thenplease, readthebookfirst!;)

Brewed’s Big Holiday InvestigationThe summer vacation might still be a few months away, but students cannot start saving for a holiday early enough. But what is the NHTV students’ choice? Do we go for the sun, the culture, the luxury – or do we just fantasize about it all while staying in The Netherlands? BREWED hit the road and found out! written by Paul Melters

As students, we are all somewhere midway leaving the nests. We might still live with mum and dad, or we do not. We might work for our money, or we have loans. We might have decided to no longer join our parents on their holidays, or we have come to revise that decision. However, if we choose to go on a holiday by ourselves, then it is our own money that will have to be spent. And since the world is about to end upcoming winter, we might as well just spend it all this summer!Tofindoutwhatholidaydestinations, whatmotives and what touristic spots attracted NHTV’s students most, we went on a little pre-summer road trip to catch up with all the academies.

¡Hola España!After a day of intensive socializing, we concluded that the students of Breda’s finest university willbe spread over the entire world this summer – just name a country, and at least one student is going there. Still, the main motivator to choose a holiday destination remains the sun – with the most of our participants going to Spain. A shared second spot in NHTV’s most wanted destinations goes to Portugal and Greece (economy! woohoo!), and a shared third place is for the United States and Croatia. The sun, the sea, and the beach persist as the classic image of the perfect holiday. “For me, the one thing I look most for in a holiday is delight,” says 23-year-old Hotel Management student Ruben, “Nice temperature, lying at the beach, good food, and good places to go out make my ideal holiday.”

Culture, Adventure And New ExperiencesThough the sun makes a big contribution to the perfect

image of summer, not all students will be looking for the heat this coming season. “Culture, adventure and new experiences,” that is what it is all about for Tourism Management student Sara, “When I’m on my holiday, I want to see as much as possible. But of course it should be relaxing as well.” Nicolette agrees: “Experiencing a new culture is the biggest reason for me to go on a holiday. My idea of the perfect vacation would be to just take my backpack and going my own way, to India, Pakistan, Indonesia, or Alaska”.

Fine DiningLeisure student Sjors is looking for something else in his holiday: “If there is one thing I wouldn’t want to miss outonduringmytrip, itisdiningatafinerestaurant.”

“The perfect combination between warmth, relaxation, and culture.”

And he is not the only one. “On my holiday I would want to dine at least once in a very good restaurant, surrounded by the atmospheres of the city I’m in.” It is Hotel student Maud’s perfect way to spend an evening at her holiday destination. Also IMEM’s Loes thinks dining contributes to her perfect holiday, “My ideal holiday is the perfect combination between warmth, relaxation, and culture. Fun trips and nice local food are required!”

Beach, culture, dining, and relaxation. NHTV students’ perfect holiday images are as diverse as that they are binding.Whatisyours?•

It is summer. It is hot. What better way is there to cool down than with a delicious ice cream or popsicle? Or, even better, making your own ice creams and popsicles! Here are some great tips and recipes to make the best out of your (ice) summer! written by Simone Verberne

Ice ice baby

When it is hot outside there is this more fun way to cool down than swim, drink ice cold water or soda, and lay back. Eating ice creams or popsicles from the store is OK, but making your own ice cream is a lot more fun! The problem your favourite ice cream flavourhasbeensoldoutorjustisnotavailablewillbesolved as well. You will only need some ingredients to makeyourfavouriteflavour, afreezer(veryimportant, otherwise the whole idea of ICE cream will not work), and some kind of popsicle mould (a plastic cup will do fine).Doyouhaveeverything?Thenlet’sstart!

You can start with making an easy popsicle. You just fillthemouldwithlemonade, putitinthefreezer, andwait till it is frozen. But what is the fun in that? It may taste fine, and it is easy tomake, but therewill notbe any difference with the simple popsicles you can buy in the store. No, what I am talking about is mixing your favourite fruits together in a blender to create your own flavour.Thisway you canmake deliciousand healthy popsicles that are not full of saturated fat, sugar, and other unhealthy stuff.

“The ultimate oreo dream of every sweet tooth. It is important to remove the cake 5 minutes before serving. This way it is much easier to cut the cake. Another tip is to preheat the knife so that it will slide through the cake. Remember to cook it with a lot of love! Enjoy”

Method of Preparation1. Take the ice cream out of the freezer and leave at room temperature for 30 minutes so it can start to soften (to make it easier to work with).2. Cover a 23 cm spring-form with plastic foil. 3. Line the inner edge of the form with a row of Oreo cookies and cover the bottom with Oreo halves. No, half moons, just split Oreo cookies.4. Put the remaining Oreo cookies in a plastic bag and smash them with a rolling-pin until only some coarse crumbs are left.5. Mix the ice cream, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, and the Oreo crumbs thoroughly in a large bowl. Make sure to save a handful of crumbs for the topping. Put the mixture in the spring-form outlined with the Oreos. Level out the top of the cake and top it with the remaining Oreo crumbs. You can also use some more caramel sauce for the topping if you like.6. Place the cake in the freezer and let it set for 4 to 6 hours.7. When ready to serve, make sure to cut the slices between the Oreo cookies on the side of the cake. This will create even slices and provide a beautiful presentation.•

Koninginnedag: The

Sinterklaas and Carnaval may have passed, but hold on tight because there are more strange typically Dutch celebrations to come! written by Otto van Toorn

Koninginnedag is a Dutch tradition, which has been practiced in The Netherlands since 1890. It is a national holiday that is celebrated with many festivities all around the country. Koninginnedag was originally celebrated on the 31st of August, but that was changed to the 30th of April in 1948.

It has generally evolved into a party nearly fully

designed for children with old-fashioned traditional games like “koekhappen”, which could be compared to bobbing for apples. As tradition has it, people are allowed to vent their products on the streets without needing a license to do so. This has led to people storming the busy cities with all their crap, hoping to sell them for a bargain.

The holiday is also renowned for all the festive live musical performances that are organised countrywide. It shouldn’t be surprising that Amsterdam especially is a popular place to be around this time, and it attracts roughly half a million visitors every year for Koninginnedag. The current queen of The

Queen’s day cancelled?

Netherlands, Queen Beatrix, will annually visit one or two places in Holland, accompanied by as many people from the royal family as possible.

All of this, however, has come under some serious pressure bever since the Dutch prince Friso has been in a coma after an avalanche-related incident while on holiday in Austria.

Many organisers of the festivities have stated some concerns about the celebrations going on as planned, or being cancelled at all. Of course the state of the prince has especially stimulated the expected speculation on the Queen’s participation during the

celebration.

Maybe this year all celebrations will be cancelled, or maybe they will be celebrated without the Queen’s presence. If prince Friso’s situation worsens there will not be much to celebrate on the 30th of April. Let’s all hope for some good news from the hospital soon, as theDutchmediastaysfirmly focusedat theprince’scritical situation.

Wearing the wrong things in the summer can be a pain in the behind. Therefore, you buy a lot of clothes for optimal variation. However, you do not always have the choice to pull another pair of clothes out of the closet. written by Niels de Zeeuw.

With company clothing certainly you can lose a lot of sweat during the day. You might have to always wear black clothes when on work, or maybe you have to wear long sleeves all the time. These kinds of clothes can make you sweat instantly, which is not preferable, of course. There is a lot of clothing perfectly wearable in summer, but wearing it while working can cause you some, or even a lot of trouble. Important to know is that company dress codes are not about fashion.

Dress codes make sure that all employees look presentable, and accordingly to the company’s values. These dress codes may vary a lot. Some companies have their own uniforms, like restaurants and perfume shops. Other companies have strict rules about style, but do not give you a certain uniform, like companies where you have to wear a suit. And, of course, there are those companies that let you wear your own clothes with minimal limitations. Remember that wherever you work and however minimal the dress code may seem, your company might still have rules and does not accept it when you come to work wrongly dressed. Certainly during the summer this is a problem many employees seem to run into. Since not all companies accept the everyday seasonal wear, you might get into trouble for wearing something like

flipflopsorsandals. If you want to make sure that you do not run into problems this summer, look up the dress code for the company you work in. Look it up on the company’s website, documents you received, or ask your boss. Most companies ask their employees to wear closed shoes, cover their shoulders and armpits, and wear pants that are not torn. These are the most basic rules many companies have, and which are also the most unavoidable. Other rules, like the use of logos on your shirt, might be up for discussion. It is possible that your company’s dress code is really strict and you are not allowed to change anything. But you can always try anyway, of course.

If the dress code is really terrible, and you do not see sticking to the code as an option, discuss it with your boss. Maybe this way you can change some things for yourself. Also, if your companies dress code allows you to wear your own clothes, make sure to stick to the following: wear light clothes, both in colour and in fabric; wear layers, so that you can remove pieces of clothing when it gets too hot; do not wear clothes that are too tight; use deodorant, a lot of deodorant!

Your company does not accept it when you come to work

wrongly dressed.

As a starter, a brand new innovation to watch out for! Google is preparing a new type of glasses that will project information, entertainment, and advertisement on the lenses. The fancy goggles are not to be worn all the time, but of course it is predicted and taken into consideration that a lot of people will get totally hooked on them and will not want to take them off! The purpose of the glasses, though, is to be used only when necessary as the lenses serve as a see-through computer monitor. Nobody will be able to see what you can see behind the glasses so this new gadget might get you some comments and strange looks because of your inexplicable body language… but hey, who cares with these goggles on?!

InthefirstyearofInternationalMediaandEntertainmenthere at NHTV, everybody has to make a documentary. The main purpose of this is to give us a taste of what it is like to create a professional documentary from start to finish and what aspects are involved. Thisdocumentary is not just for school purposes. There are judges of the Dutch television station Brabant10 who will choose the best documentaries, and these chosen ones will be aired on television. This makes it an even more professional assignment. This means that there are also ethical aspects involved because it will be aired on television. Now you don’t just look for people with a story to tell, but you have to get release forms and agreements.

Let’s take a look at how to begin with this exciting assignment. Trust me, it really is a nice project to work on even though it might seem like the opposite at some points. These days there are a lot of different documentaries with various topics. There are so many steps that you have to take when making a documentary.

It is not just about finding a subject and startwith filming. Sure, there usually are not as manytechnological aspects involved as narrative films. However, this does not mean that it takes any less preparation than features. First, you have to come up with a subject and suitable people that you want your documentarytobethecenterof.Howdoyoufindagood subject and the perfect people for it?

“Probably everybody haswatched a documentary atone point in their life”

The best thing is to choose a topic that you, or a group member is related to. Do not look for topics or people that you know are hard to get in contact with. This is important because you will spend about seven weeks working on this documentary and this means that you will have to be able to reach the persons and locations that your story is about. A documentary is mostly about people who have a story to tell. This can vary from a mother who has to take care of her sick child to someone who is an athlete and won many prizes. One very famous documentary maker who is known for his

Page 43: BREWED - May 2012

After you choose your topic the real work starts. You have to get in contact with the people you want to interview and get their agreement. They have to sign a form stating that they agree with their information and appearance being used in your documentary. If you plan to shoot on a public place, you also need to have a release form. This is a form that the owner of the location has to sign. You also cannot use copyright music, unless you have an agreement form for that, too. So, be careful, if you want to use music! I cannot stress the ethical part of a documentary enough because you do not want to violate the terms of agreement. This could get you in a lot of trouble. If you use material in your documentary without permission, people might sue you. After everything is arranged with the location and the people, you can start with filming and editing. Keep inmind that it takes a lotof hours and energy to make a documentary. There willbetimeswhenyouhavetofilmintheeveningoroutside school hours. Apple is known for its revolutionary products such as the iPod, iPhone, and last but certainly not least the iPad. This last product is very popular and up until now has three different variants and has sold over 55 million devices. First there was the iPad, a year later there was the iPad 2. Just about a month ago, the third generation was launched, and it’s called “The new iPad”. Before it was introduced, there were a lot of speculations about what it would look like, and what new features it would have. However, this has somewhat become the regular procedure before a new Apple product is launched. Many websites are created, and especially dedicated to the new Apple product, and people talk about a possible name, features, etc. As mentioned before, this also happened with “The new iPad.” Many people speculated about it, but no one knew for sure what it would look like until the presentation, which happened on the 3rd of March.

The event was held in the “Yerba Buena Center” in SanFrancisco.ThiswasthefirstAppleeventwithoutSteve Jobs where a new iPad was introduced. Unfortunately Steve Jobs died on the 5th of October, 2011. However, even though his death was very tragic, people do not have to worry about the future of Apple and its products.

They proved that with their last keynote. The new iPad is as spectacular as it was expected. The new features include a Retina display, a 5-megapixel iSight camera and very fast 4G LTE. The Retina display means that the colors of the screen are richer and it has more pixels thus makes photos look lifelike. It really is a revolutionary technology that makes the display look crystal clear. It also has HD Video Recording in full 1080p.

If you want to take a look at this new iPad and play around with it, there’s good news for our Dutch Apple fans.Onthe3rdofMarchAppleopeneditsfirststorein the Netherlands. It is on a beautiful location in Amsterdam and an even more beautiful store. The opening was very festive and there was a huge queue of people waiting.

Now that the new iPad is launched, it will take a while before there’s another Apple event. Many people are already talking about the next generation of the iPhone. There even have been created photos of what the supposable “iPhone 5” is going to look like. However, even though it’s nice to speculate about yet another Apple product, for now we have to settle with “The new iPad”, and that’s not bad at all!

Trees are getting green, days are getting longer, weather is getting better… or at least we all hope so! The best time of the year is coming, but some IMEM students are looking forward to it with a special tickly feeling in their bellies… It is graduation time! written by Lachezar Kamenov

Thelong-expectedsummerisonitsway…finally.Itisabout time we took out the short pants, dusted off the flipflops, andputonthesunglassesforarealreasonbesides being “cool”. Of course having a few exams still left to be passed is not a detail to underestimate, but let’s say that the closer we get to freedom, the more motivated we get to be done with school at once. Every year there is a bunch of IMEM fellows, though, who have mixed feelings about this time of the year. For them the summer vacation seems to be like staring at the light of the end of the “tunnel” of college. Ladies and gentlemen, to you attention: the graduates!

After having spent four years at NHTV, some of the graduates-to-be definitely have collected interestingstories and impressions that must be shared with the coming generations. That is why we are sneaking a peek now in the lives of two IMEM girls doing their placement in Berlin. Let me introduce you: Maya and Megan.

Maya is doing her second placement at a booking agency for concerts and festivals called KKT. Having on her mind plans to become a booking agent or a band manager herself, she is for sure happy with where she

is and what she is doing right now… and hopes this will be pretty much her future, too. Megan, also placed in Berlin now, is doing her graduation internship for the Internet stores AG, which is one of the leading e-commerce businesses in Germany specializing in bicycles, outdoor, fitnessandliving.SheisintheSEO(search engine optimisation) department working on the company’s Dutch websites. Megan shares with us thatSEOisaninteresting, dynamicfieldthatprovidesa lot of international job opportunities but still- she would like this to be her back up plan. She sees herself writing for fashion magazines and proudly admits her guilt: “Yes, I am that kind of girl.”

When I asked about the differences between their firstinternshipinthethirdyearandthecurrentone,Iget pretty much similar answers. Maya states that the level of professionalism now is much higher. Also KKT is way more successful than the company she worked before. According to Megan, her previous placement was “interns’ paradise” so undoubtedly now she feels more connected to the company, being surrounded with “normal” employees. Moreover, the bigger responsibilities also play an important role. They both underline the possibilities for future job they have now and, not to mention, the thesis still to be written. The light is getting closer and closer but not there yet!

a very enjoyable journey

45

Speaking of thesis writing, I am curious to know what are these two scheming for their last academic effort. Maya hopes it will all end this June but before that she needs to make sure that her paper covers meticulously a not-so-easy topic. The subject she has chosen is “concert mediation and how the concert experience can be transmitted onto digital material”. Fancy! Megan, on the other hand, is heading towards a more marketing-related subject. She says she wants to explore “whether investments in Facebook marketing for fan pages of e-commerce businesses generate profit rather than only a higher page rankon Google”. Megan makes a side note here and tells that this is a topic of present interest for SEOs and finding a good answer to it will give her thesis andgraduation an extra boost before the laidback summer holiday comes.

Now immediately comes up the question: what about life after graduation? Here we have some contradiction. Maya hopes to start working right away in the company she is doing her internship in now, KKT. She believes that the future of the music industry is all about concerts and live performances and there are hidden the great opportunities of tomorrow. Pretty ambitious I would say; not bad, not bad at all! Megan is more on the opposite side. Her near future consists of travelling, writing, and “making enough money to pay the rent and not having to cook (Amen for ordering food)”. She honestly puts behind the plans for career and family, and would rather check out places, meet people, and enjoy life to the fullest before being stuck with an ordinary life. Industry in the future- as long as

Page 49: BREWED - May 2012

people buy magazines and newspapers, it will all be fine!

The moment of truth has come! I ask the girls to give a short and straight-to-the-point summary of the NHTV years. Maya calls it “a wild ride”, where they learned a lot. She wouldn’t praise the level of communication but that also taught her lessons, especially how to make her way through the chaos.Megan’s overview sounds more carefree- she will remember the “helium balloons and the chocolate fountain at the propaedeutic party”. She regrets not having enough useful classes on writing, though, but also has to admit that the people around her made the four of IMEM “a very enjoyable journey”.

After the chitchat with Maya and Megan I am left with quite the optimistic view of what is yet to come. Sure, there are going to be obstacles on the way; there are going to be “wild ride” experiences, good or bad; hopefully, there are going to be even more helium balloons and chocolate fountains, both literally and metaphorically. What should keep every IMEM student positive about this whole “thing” called education is the big picture where everything goes to its place and it was all worth it. But before that, let’s take small steps. First step: Summer 2012, hold on, here we come! And to our dear fourth-year-fellows:

Good luck and farewell!

Special thanks to Maya Sontheimer and Megan de Graaf

Goodbye gravity Hello galaxy

If you have ever dreamt of going into space and doing what only a few hundred people have done, then the perfect solution is going to be available for you sooner than you might think: Commercial Space Travelling! written by Steffanie Eerhart

Don’t you ever get the idea that everything in this entire world is already discovered or seen a billion times? You take, for example, the KLM airline, which hasbeensendingout commercial flightsever sincethe 1920’s. They would send you to any corner of this finiteplanet.Butwhataboutinfinity?

At the moment the most successful space launch system that is getting ready to commercially send people into space as tourists is ‘’Virgin Galactic’’, located in New Mexico. At their “Spaceport” they are working on a commercial space launch system which isbasedontheworld’sfirstprivate-mannedspaceshipwhichsuccessfullyflewtospaceandbackthreetimesduring 2004.

For the amount of 200,000 dollars you become a pioneer in a new industry, and an insider in all new developments of the corporation (not really accessible for most students, but think big!). Virgin Galactic is changing the term “The sky is the limit” into “The sky is not the limit because the universe awaits you!”. The experience people will be looking forward to in the future shall unfold as followed.

After two or three amazingly interesting days of preparing with your crew (6 passengers and 2 pilots) you are suited up and ready to start the holiday of a lifetime.

The climb to 50,000 feet is marked with you waiting in silence, butwithatouchofconfidenceandenthusiasticanticipation. And then it comes, the countdown to release. After a brief moment of silence before a wave of unimaginable but controlled power rushes through the spacecraft, you are instantly pinned back into your seat, overwhelmed by the noise of the rocket motor and the eye-watering acceleration which has you travelling in a matter of seconds, over 3 times the speed of sound!

As you push through the edges of the atmosphere, the large windows show the blue sky slowly turning to black. It feels like you are high, you think “Is this really happening?’’, you are loving it and you are adjustingfine!Thenyoustarttorelax, butinaninstantyour senses are back on full alert, the world in and outside your spacecraft has completely transformed. The rocket motor has been switched off and it’s quiet. But it’s not just quiet, it’s QUIET! The silence of space is just as inspiring as the noise of the rocket just moments earlier. But what is really confusing your senses is that the gravity, which has dominated

every single movement you’ve made since the day you were born, is gone. You are out of your seat and experiencing the freedom that even in your wildest dreams didn’t see coming. However, when you look through the large window you see a view that you have seen a thousand times in pictures and on TV, but the reality of it is so much more beautiful than you could ever imagine. What you are looking at is the source of everything it means to be human. It is our Planet Earth: Home.

What seems like a moment later, you are back on your seat and gravity is starting to return to your world. You feel the swift wings of the spacecraft producing a powerful drag as the thickness of the atmosphere increases (although out of the windows it still looks like you are in space). The gravity forces quickly ease off and you hear the pilot announce the start of the journey home.

Later that week, when you are sitting down with friends and family, you know that life will never quite be the same again.

While I would rather keep my two feet on these solid earthlygrounds,Ibetmanyofyouwouldlovetofloataround in a high-tech commercial spaceship while experiencingtheinfiniteviewsspacehastooffer.Still, like all things special and unique, most people have to earn it. So, work your way to the top, earn some decent money, than maybe one day you can say, ‘’People, I said goodbye to gravity and an unforgettable hello to thegalaxy!’’.•

You know that life will never quite be the same again.

Thetrafficjamhasbeenaroundforaslongasthereare cars, it’s easy, you just need a road and a lot of cars and then you can get started. And although ourNHTV students from Logistics and Mobility are workinghardonfindingasolutiontotheseproblemsthe fact is that they are still here, so how can wecope with them?

Tip 1: Take the scenic route

If you know you are going to a place where a lot of people are going, like a beach or a festival, you know forsurethatyouwillgetstuckintrafficsomewhere. When you use a TomTom or other GPS device you caneasilyfindalternativeroutes.Whynottakearoutethattakesyouaroundtown?Youfirstseesomeofthesurroundings and it could turn into a great road trip

especially nice if you brought your best friends with you!

Tip 2: Travel in Style

When you go to the beach, you need to do it in style! So why not hire a beach buggy!? There are various organisations in Holland where you can hire beach buggy’s they look tough, they can take a beating, and if the beach is full you can just honk your horn and scare the people away!

Tip 3: Take Public Transport

This may sound cliché, but still it is the best way! The public transport is often not used much in the

vacations because most people are out of the country or…stuck ina traffic jam!Soyouhavegotawholetrain for you and your friends! You can already test out those beach balls, come up with your day plan or just lay out your towel over the seat and get a tan. But beware of the evil conductors! They want your ticket, and they can’t go to beach!

Tip 4: Have a Plan-B

As Hannibal (you know, the A-team!?) already once said: “Always have a back-up plan!” if you do get stuck inatrafficjam,youcantrythefollowingtop5‘things-to-do-in-a-traffic-jam’ to get you through these rufftimes:

5. Write a ‘one-line’ story

One friend starts with a sentence, then pass it around!

4. Get out of the car and ask drivers around your car if they know the directions to Narnia.

3. Write ‘Your car is on fire!’ on a piece of cardboard and show it to other drivers.

2. Park your car to the side of the road, put your towel on the front of your car and get a tanuntilthetrafficjamis over.
