This Week’s GameThe Tornados are coming off their first win of the 2007 season, as they stormed through the Hawks of Chowan University last week, scoring a 45-7 victory. Lenoir-Rhyne is also coming off their first win of the season, as they defeated Benedict College, 38-13.
The CoachesBrevard College boss Paul Hamilton is in his first year as head coach of the Tornados. Hamilton will look to have his team continue their high energy play from last week’s victory in this week’s matchup with the Bears. Hamilton is coming off his first win as the BC head coach. He brings with him over 25 years of coaching experience at both the Division I and II levels. Hamilton was previously the head coach at both East Tennessee State (1997-2003) and Elon (2004-2005). Lenoir-Rhyne head coach Fred Goldsmith is in his first season as the leader of the Bears. He has led the Bears to a 1-3 victory so far this season. Goldsmith, like Hamilton, has many years of coaching experience at the Division I. Goldsmith has twice been voted national coach of the year at the Division I level. He served as head football coach at Duke University (1993-1998) and Rice University (1989-1993).
Scouting the BearsLenoir-Rhyne will look to rush the ball out of their two-back spread set offense against the Tornado defensive front. The Bears ground game is bolstered by a two-man attack, as freshmen James Pone and Andrew Courman lead the way for the Bears. Pone has rushed for 356-yards and one touchdown on 85 attempts, while Courman has gained 295-yards with four touchdowns on 57 carries.
As a team Lenoir-Rhyne has rushed for 822-yards per game and is averaging 205.5 yards per game on the ground as a team this season.
The SeriesThis is the first ever meeting between the Brevard College Tornados and the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on the gridiron.
Running WildIn last week’s win over Chowan, BC piled up a total of 409-offensive yards, with 257-yards coming by way of the running game, both season highs for the Tornados. Brevard’s offense had nine different players with at least one rushing attempt for the game. Sophomore running back Tyrone Arrington picked up 117-yards on 12 carries, posting an average of 9.8 yards per carry. The 117-yard performance was Arrington’s first 100-yard game, and was capped off by a 44-yard scamper into the end zone late in the fourth quarter, sealing the blowout victory for the Tornados. Junior running back John Taylor rushed 15 times for 76-yards and two touchdowns, while fullback Derek Church added a touchdown of his own, his first of the season.
One-Two PunchFor the second straight game, the Tornados saw two different quarterbacks go under center on the offensive side of the ball. Sophomore Colby McCoy started the game versus Chowan, where he completed 10 of his 17 pass attempts for 152 yards. McCoy also passed for one touchdown and one interception. While, freshman Trey Wilborn saw all of his snaps come in the second half, he rushed five times for 53-yards while leading the BC option attack.
Since sharing the snaps over the last two games, the one-two punch of McCoy and Wilborn has been successful, as they have combined to pass for 205-yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 79-yards on 23 attempts.
Tale of Two HalvesThe opening half of each game has proven to be good for the Tornados as they have combined to score a total of 62 points in the first half of their four games. However, BC has only managed to push across 34 points in the second half of all four of their games this season.
While BC has outscored their opponents 62-35 in the first half, the second half has been a disaster, as the Tornados have been outscored 72-34 in the final two quarters.

BC Against the SACWith the loss to Mars Hill this season, the Tornados are 0-4 versus their future conference opponents. In 2006, the Tornados were 0-3, having lost to Mars Hill, Newberry and Tusculum.
BC Against the NAIAWith the two losses in the first two weeks of the season to UVA Wise and Shorter, the Tornados remain winless versus NAIA opponents on the gridiron. Dating back to last season the Tornados are 0-4 versus NAIA teams.
Close CallThe Torandos led for most of the game versus Shorter College in week two. In fact, the Tornados only trailed for a total of 6:20 seconds in the entire game until the Hawks’ kicked the game-winning field goal with only seconds remaining in the contest. The 24-21 loss was the closest loss of the season for the Tornados. The three point loss is also the closest loss that BC has encountered over the last two seasons.
Oh How Times Have Changed - Third Time is a CharmIn the 45-7 win over Chowan last Saturday, the Tornados again set new individual and team game highs in their brief history. Sophomore Jeffrey Adams set a new individual game high for receiving yards as he collected 63-yards on two catches. Kicker Chase Henry set a new individual game high with a 40-yard field goal.
As a team, BC set a team game high with 44 rushing attempts, with four rushing touchdowns and with 257 rushing yards. McCoy also set helped to set a new team game high of 8.4 yards per pass play, as well as averaging 6.6 yards per play from the line of scrimmage. BC also set a new team game high of total offensive yards, posting 409 yard of total offense versus Chowan. The Tornados scoring total of 45 points was also the most that they have scored in one game in their brief two year history.
Oh How Times Have Changed -Take TwoIn only their first two games of the young 2007 season, the Tornados have broken a number of both team and individual game highs that were set all of the 2006 season. Versus Shorter, BC tied the team high for three rushing touchdowns in a game, which was set in week one vs. UVA Wise and last year at LaGrange College (10/21/06). Also in week two, the Tornados set new team highs for a game in Total Offensive Plays (76), Total Offense (331), Rushing attempts (58), and Rushing Yards (284).
A number of individual performances against Shorter set new individual game highs for the Tornados, as running back John Taylor set a new high of rushing attempts with 30, rushing yards with 218 and rushing touchdowns with three.
RAWLSOh How Times Have ChangedIn game one versus UVA Wise, BC set new team highs in Pass attempts (32), Pass completions (15) and Passing Yards (218). In the first game of the season, receiver Cory Pertz tied the individual game high for BC in receptions with four versus UVA Wise. Receiver Michael Turner set a new BC record on the longest pass reception with a 54-yard catch in the season opener against UVA Wise, while quarterback Colby McCoy set individual game highs in passing attempts (32), pass completions (15), yards passing (218 yards) and longest pass (54-yard pass).
A Rainy Day in VirginiaBrevard College played a game of endurance in Wise, as the Tornados not only battled the opposing team, but also rain showers and inclement whether was a factor on and off throughout the game. The fourth quarter proved to be the worst as ran fell steadily throughout the last 15 minutes of play.
Youth MovementBrevard College enters Saturday’s first game with one of the youngest rosters in the nation at the Division II level. Of the 80 players listed on their active roster, 68 players are either freshmen or sophomores. The other 12 players are all part of the junior class as there is not a single senior on the team.
Speaking Of YoungstersBrevard College played nine true freshmen in the season opener on Saturday at UVA Wise, and saw five other newcomers receive action in the game. Of the 48 players who participated in the BC-UVA Wise tilt, 39 are members of either the freshman or sophomore class (81 percent).
‘New Kids on the Block’In addition to the Tornados youth, there are a number of new faces on both the coaching staff as well as players. Out of the 12 coaches on staff, eight of them are new to the program this year. Out of the 80 men active roster, 34 are newcomers to the Tornado squad.
MindsetThe Brevard College football team’s mindset this season is not based on survival such as last season, but rather it is founded on the idea of “continued improvement”. According to Coach Hamilton, “we want to work hard everyday in everything we do so that we can improve as a program, a team, a coaching staff, players, students and as people each day.”
Tornados Full PlateThe Tornados have a tough challenge ahead in 2007, as they will play a full South Atlantic Conference schedule. Brevard, who suited up for eight games a year ago, will have a full 11-game schedule in 2007. Brevard’s next two contests will be at the friendly confines of Brevard Memorial Stadium as they play host to Tusculum on October 13 and LaGrange the following Saturday, October 20. BC wraps up its 2007 season with three SAC match ups as they travel to Carson-Newman on October 27, return home to do battle with Catawba on November 3 and then play its final game on the road at Newberry on November 10.
