Introduction

The South Essex town of Brentwood is a pleasant,busy town, conveniently situated for London andthe surrounding countryside and coast with a

good mix of shops, schools, businesses andrecreational facilities. It is surrounded by opencountryside which is part of the the MetropolitanGreen Belt, with the heart of the town onlyminutes away from pleasant woods, commonsand footpaths.

Apart from its urban heart, the Borough of Brentwood has 3,000 acres of woodland, severalcountry parks, and a number of very attractivevillages and farmland within its borders, yet it is

only 18 miles from London.

Rail and road connections are excellent, withthe M25, A12 and A127 trunk roads within theBorough and convenient, fast rail links withLondon and East Anglia. Stansted, City andSouthend airports are all 30 to 40 minutes driveaway, with Heathrow and Gatwick airports notmuch more. Dartford Tunnel/Queen Elizabeth IIBridge and Tilbury Docks are also within easyreach. To the east, Harwich and Felixstowe are 90minutes away via the A12. Such assets giveBrentwood a superior locational advantage, muchappreciated by both residents and businesses.

The Borough of Brentwood includes the parishes of Blackmore, Hook End & Wyatts Green,Doddinghurst, Herongate & Ingrave, Ingatestone & Fryerning, Kelvedon Hatch, Mountnessing, Navestock,Stondon Massey and West Horndon, and has a total area of 15,315 hectares and a population of 68,456(2001 Census).

The main shopping centre is Brentwood, but there is an interesting variety of shops at both Ingatestone& Shenfield.

Around theBorough of Brentwood

Blackmore, Hook End & Wyatts GreenFirst recorded in the Domesday book asPhingaria (Fingrith), the Latinised form of anAnglo Saxon name meaning the stream of thepeople of Fin. The use of the name Blackmore,meaning Black Marsh or Black Swamp wouldseem to have been generally accepted by the endof the Middle Ages.

Blackmore, which is one of the more attractiveEssex villages, is in the centre of the Parish. To thesouth, on a moated site, is the Church of StLaurence, which is all that remains of anAugustine Priory of Blackmore, founded in the12th century.

Hook End and Wyatts Green are hamlets about amile-and-a-half south-west of the church, and it isin these places, and to the north of the villagegreen, that building development has taken place.

Doddinghurst The name Doddinghurst is of Anglo-Saxon originand means the wood of Dudda or of his people.It is first recorded in the Domesday Book asDoddenhenc, but the modern form had evolved,with minor variations in spelling, by the 13th century.

The Church of All Saints has a 13th century naveand south doorway. The roof and porch are of the15th century. On the roof beam are 17th centurycarved and painted wooden images of the crucifix,

the Virgin and St John. The building was restoredin 1886 and the chancel rebuilt. The church alsoretains the oldest Marriage Register dated backto 1755.

Although development has taken place atDoddinghurst, it is still very much a part of ruraland historic Essex. The greater part of the land isgiven over mainly to arable farming.

Herongate & IngraveIngrave lies north of Herongate and on the eastside of the extensive park of Thorndon Hall.

In 1903 the composer Vaughan Williams visitedIngrave and heard an old labourer sing the songBushes and Briars. Moved by the beauty of whathe heard, Ralph Vaughan Williams made five tripsto Essex over the next three years, collectingtunes of over 100 songs.

Herongate village lies 31

/2 miles south east of Brentwood and grew up originally at the gate of Heron Hall, anciently a herony and the seat of theHeron family and then the Tyrells. It was pulleddown in 1790 and another house built whichoccupies an ancient moated site.

The medieval parish church of St Nicholas wasconsecrated in 1895. The bell and the font of theearlier church were transferred to the new church.

MountnessingMountnessing is one of the group of ing villages.

The other parts of the name refer to a medievalowner of the manor called de Monteny from aplace in Western France named either Montenayor Montigny.

The parish church stands some way from thevillage; it dates from Norman times with earlyEnglish and perpendicular alterations, and displaysre-used Roman bricks and tiles in its structure.

The main feature of Mountnessing is its windmill,Mountnessing Post Mill, which was built in theearly 19th century. It is preserved and owned byEssex County Council and is a picturesque timberstructure on a circular brick base. The Mill is nolonger used, but it remains a landmark visible formiles around.

Navestock The name means the stump on the headland,which fits the topography, for the varied sceneryincludes hills and woodlands.

Mountnessing Windmill

Ingatestone & Fryerning The names Ingatestone and Fryerning probablyhave a common origin which may go back to theearliest days of the Saxon settlement of Essex,perhaps to the 6th century. Generally, place

names including ing are thought to refer togroups or tribes of Saxon settlers who hadcrossed the North Sea to colonise Britain.

Fryerning belonged in the Middle Ages to theKnights Hospitallers called in old English frerene(friars), so the name Friars-ing arose.

The village of Ingatestone stands on the formerGreat Essex Road from London to Great

Yarmouth (which has since been replaced by amodern dual carriageway bypass). The long mainstreet has kept its character with 16th centuryhouses interspersed with Georgian work.

Kelvedon HatchKelvedon Hatch was part of the ancient forest of Essex, as the word Hatch, a forest gate, indicates,and extensive woods still remain. The meaningof the word Kelvedon is uncertain - it may bemulti-coloured hill.

In the north-west is Kelvedon Hall, a fine 18thcentury house erected by the Wright family,who held the estate from 1538 until thepresent century.

B R E N T W O O D S T R E E T P L A N Most of the population is at Navestock Side in the

east, around a green where cricket has beenplayed since the 18th century. NavestockCommon, in the south of the parish, was enclosedin 1770, and the long straight road runningthrough it was built then.

Navestock Heath, to the north of the Common,is still enclosed. The woods at Curtis Mill Green,in the west of the parish, were once part of theForest of Essex, and two forest boundary stones,the Navestock Stone and the Richard Stone, canstill be seen there.

The Church of St Thomas was built in the 11th or12th century and considerably enlarged in the13th century. The 15th century timber tower isone of the finest in Essex.

Stondon MasseyStondon Massey is still mainly rural, but there hasbeen a good deal of suburban building during thepast 30 years.

The original settlement was on the high ground tothe north, which, with its gravel soil, gave theparish its first name Stondon, which means

stony hill. It is believed that its second name,Massey, derived from the family of Marcy whoheld a manor in the Middle Ages.

There have been three successive manor houses,the oldest of which is Stondon Hall, near thechurch. The north wing of the Hall is probably of the 15th century, and there is some 16th and 17thcentury panelling inside.

The church of St Peter and St Paul retains the naveand chancel and some of the original round-headedarches of 1100.

West Horndon The village is surrounded by agricultural landscapeand boasts its own main line railway stationinto London.

West Horndon adjoins East Horndon, Herongateand Ingrave on the east side of the original park of Thorndon Hall. By 1600 Thorndon Hall hadbecome the chief home of the Petre family onland purchased in West Horndon in 1573. Thecurrent Hall is a Listed Grade 1 classical Georgianhouse, built in 1764 by James Paine.

The original park now houses a private golf course but is otherwise open to the public andincludes original features such as the Deer Park,changed little since the 1500s when the LordPetre hunted deer across the turf.

HartswoodA wood of 73 acres where an access trail makesit easy for people to use, including those withdisabilities. There is a footpath which runs throughHartswood and links up with Thorndon CountryPark and Little Warley and Childerditch Common.

ParkmobilityParkmobility allows those who have difficultywalking to borrow battery powered scooters freeof charge in King Georges Playing Fields, andWeald and Thorndon country parks.
