RESIdENCE Each of the school’s eight boarding houses overlooks the spectacular Saanich Peninsula, and provides easy access to all of the art, athletic and academic facilities. The houses are modern and comfortable; all have common rooms, kitchen areas, internet access (including Skype and social media), televisions and areas for socializing with people from other houses. More than these amenities each house, student develop house loyalty and pride. Long after graduation, the experience in the boarding house typically creates meaningful memories and lifelong friendships. Up to four students typically share a room and each student has her own bed, desk, chair and dresser for clothing and personal items. The residence houses each have their appointed faculty houseparents and assistant houseparents. Dining > All meals are served in our new Crooks Dining Hall, which is our oceanfront dining room and student services centre, designed to be a warm, welcoming, west coast style facility, which is student friendly and built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold standards. For students, it is a “one stop social experience and campus heart” where they eat, relax, socialize, buy school supplies, drop and pick up laundry, uniforms and sports clothing, have meetings, dances, coffee houses, special events and meet parents and faculty in a supervised setting.
ACAdEMIC CURRICULUM Brentwood encourages all students to achieve their personal best in the classroom in pursuit of academic excellence. SMARTBoard technology supports traditional teaching to promote critical thinking; both have a place and purpose. Strong teacher-student relationships are forged through favorable class sizes and access to teachers for extra help. Each student meets regularly with a designated faculty member, who acts as an advisor for academic guidance and counselling. Academic progress is discussed with students monthly, and academic reports, showing both percentage grades and comments, are sent to parents at the end of each term.
The Brentwood curriculum includes 18 Advanced Placement courses at the first-year university level in Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Comparative Government and Politics, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Human Geography, Physics, Economics, English language andLiterature, French, Spanish, Psychology, Calculus, Music Theory and Studio Arts; this allows greater flexibility and individual choice for senior students. With a strong focus on English, mathematics, science, history, and modern languages, Brentwood has also developed unique programmes in entrepreneurship, marketing, environmental science, and global studies.
COMPUTERS / LAPTOPS laptop: mandatory All students are required to use a laptop computer - either PC or MAC - in their classes. Purchase of a laptop must be done prior to arrival at school. Computer literacy is an essential component of modern life and a vital skill for students seeking a post-secondary education. Brentwood emphasizes the importance of technology across the curriculum. In all grades, teachers and students, alike, are being exposed to tools and computer programmes that enhance the learning process and help prepare students for post-secondary careers and beyond. The leadership and assistance of the Computer Department in supporting the academic progress of all students is a cornerstone to this success. Be it in the classroom or in the Houses, the computer system at Brentwood continues to evolve and grow in size and quality
ESL/EAL Brentwood College School does not provide an ESL Programme. Students applying to this school must possess an advanced level of English proficiency to fully participate in the academic curriculum.
SPORTS ANd ExTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIvITIES participation: mandatory Brentonians value physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship—and they love to compete. Through team and individual sports and outdoor pursuits, Brentwood students develop commitment, endurance, resilience, confidence, and teamwork. Brentwood is proud to offer 24 sport options; most of these options are available at different skill levels from introductory to advanced. In grades 9 and 10, students are encouraged to develop a wide range of skills. Senior students may elect to specialize as training and competition become more intense. For its size, Brentwood has produced a remarkable number of international athletes, including 23 Olympians. These include Olympic rowing medalists Malcolm Howard (gold) and silver medalists Scott Frandson and Dave Calder.
At Brentwood, we believe the Arts promote creativity, self-expression, and teamwork. The arts help students visualize an idea and see a complex process through to reality. They teach patience, humility, and confidence. They enrich the imagination and challenge the mind. They provide balance and perspective. The arts create culture and civilize us.
