Brecon Fringe 2014
A big sloppy welcome to Brecon
Fringe 2014!
As you pick your way through this
strawberry jampacked Guide, you
might notice some of those trendy
QR codes. Scan with a scanner
app (get one free from Onvert) and
see who’s there!
There’s a whole shedload of band
shenanigans at the Fringe.
Look out for Fingertrap, 4C, Bella
Collins, The Bleedin Noses, She
Tasted Good, Glas, 4 Brothers,
Whisky Business, Cherryshoes,
The Coalition, The Spirit of Boogie,
Veullewait and Johnny Lucas.
A big thank you to Brecon Town
Council and the Brecon shops and
businesses who have
supported the Fringe Guide. Also
thanks to Nigel Roberts and his
team at Imaginet for hosting the
Fringe website. And finally we’d like
to take this opportunity to wish
Brecon Jazz a happy 30th birthday.
Happy Birthday Father Jazz!

Westbound Piccadilly
If you've ever been up to that
London Town, you've doubtless
been down in a tube station at
midnight. Gee, there's a song there,
if I could just write it.
One of those tube lines is called the
Piccadilly line. Well, whatever next?
Those magnificent men in their
tunnelling machines, underground,
overground, Wombling free. There's
a song there too. If only I could
work Womble into the chorus.
Westbound Piccadilly are a
bluegrass six piece.
They sing songs like 'Hey, Barney
Rutherford!' and 'Where Did He
Go?', love songs I assume.

Cherryshoes
Crikey! I know it always irks the
creative brilliance when journos
compare your unique being to
someone else’s creative unique-
ness but sometimes I just can’t help
myself. Listening to Lisa from
Cherryshoes, I am whisked back to
the dizzy 1980s with Liz Frazier out
of the Cocteau Twins and 90s
oddbod Swede Stina Nordenstam.
It’s actually a big fat compliment as
they were the topmost bananas in
my book.
Cherryshoes are all over Brecon
this weekend.
Make sure you see them.

VOES
Harriet Whitehead learned about
music in her dad's car - The
Beatles, David Bowie, Queen,
Sinead O’Connor. I'm assuming
their music was coming out of the
car's speakers and they weren't
riding along with them but who
knows. It paints a lovely picture
anyway.David saying: "Are we there
yet?" in his Antony Newley voice.
The Beatles wanting a wee and
Sinead O'Connor pulling Brian
May's hair.
Her new band is mysteriously called
VOES. Ask her why. She’s at St
Mary’s Church on Sunday.

'Please spell our name in one go
and all in caps,' they say.
Okay will do. It's art, I get it. I
quite like art in music, like
Talking Heads, Daft Punk, Laurie
Anderson, Yoko Ono.
Okay, maybe not Yoko Ono.
Cerebral yeah, cerebral. Oh and
quite noisy. Great noise actually.
And Crikey, what a press release
they can write. Or else, they paid
a trendy journalist (not a local
sports hack of course).
'Hauntingly concise falsetto
vocals', they say. I can't wait.
They play The Clarence.
S.E.X.
I know what you're thinking.
Well, you're wrong. It's actually
short for Savage Excellence.
However, they do have a totally
naked bass player and a singer
called Phil Jones who dresses
up in a Dracula cape and a
codpiece (I'm thinking cod, peas
and chips. I nicked that from The
Lone Groover out of a 70s
NME.) They had
a number one hit
single in
Australia and
The Darkness
stole their act.

Fingertrap
This Rhondda Cynon Taff band
came to our attention at Fringe
Central last year when Tim
booked them to play the Tav or
at least their video for 'Return If
Found' did.
Shot in Cwmaman, it had all the
hallmarks of a band who know
what they're doing and know
where they're going. It's what we
call an 'ensemble piece' in this
business we call 'show'.
Unusually led by a piano (just
like A Flock of Seagulls and
Thomas Dolby) they're not your
average band, Boo-Boo.

Greed The Rock Opera
'If you can write a rock opera, then the world will beat a path to your door.'
Can't remember where I heard that. Possibly one of those talking head
shows with Stuart McConie. Matter of fact, there have only been a handful
of rock operas to date. Tommy, Quadrophenia, well two. Defined, a RO
has a storyline but no speaking. That would be a musical. Stranglers
manager Dai Davies says Greed is the first Facebook Opera, it having
been created by inviting Brecon
musicians to come sing and play on it
- nearly thirty of them.
This Fringe we get the stripped down
band version. The 1% will die of
greed - that's what they say. Are you
with us or them? Maxen or Rotkin?

Open Mic with Bob Evans
Antique dealer by day,
multi-instrumentalist by night.
Left handed guitarist, bongo
playing, singer Bob Evans is well
know for his songs about not
having enough guitars.
Or should that be never having
too many guitars?
The open mic sessions at the
Tavern and Watton Church are
fair game for allcomers. Get
there early to put your name on
Bob's List to avoid any
disappointment as they say on
adverts. Bring your own capo.
Duets welcome.
The Godseys
Where have I heard that name
before? I'll tell ya! The Godseys
run the store in The Waltons.
They were the homesteader’s
equivalent of Fresco and Valco.
The Waltons got everything
there, pinto beans, gingham,
chewing backy, scratch cards.
Why, they could even make a
phone call there to a fancy book
publisher in New York. These
Godseys are from the Forest of
Dean and play country music.

night Sandy Loo. Goodnight

Hershel's Barn
Last seen at wonderful Mallyfest,
the Barn now features new
members Nev Nevin on double
bass and Chris Butcher on
drums.
I say drums but I think Chris has
got more of a minimal rockabilly
stand up snare vibe going on.
Banjo player Ade Williams was
seen recently carrying a
glockenspiel, so we really don't
know what to expect from
Hershel this Fringe weekend.
Probably on at a few other
places but at time of jotting this
down The George and Pilgrims.

Los Squideros
New to Brecon Fringe and
playing at the Muse at Brecon, a
venue also new to the Fringe,
Los Squideros play 'wholesome
Latin beats with ska and tex-
mex'.
Pass me down my sombrero, I'm
going out.
A ten piece (but of variable
actual size on any given day),
Los Squideros have a long
festival history. You may have
seen them at Glastonbury. I went
there once but I'm not keen on
fields, which I suppose is a bit
odd for a sheep.

Life Study by Michael Howard,a member of Hay Life Group,
on show at Life and all that Jazz at 7 The
Struet, Brecon.
‘
The HurricanesPossibly the youngest band at the
Fringe and they’re from Mid Wales.
Young guns but they hammer their
way through a carefully chosen
bunch of classic rock. Catch them
at The Boar’s Head, a suitable
venue if ever there was one for
good ole rock’n’roll.

The Spirit of Boogie
They say that they're the baddest
and the downright craziest 10 piece
funk band this universe has ever
seen. I thought that was Simon and
Garfunkel.
They come highly recommended by
Lizzy Blinkhorne among other taste
making Aberdarians and lay down
numbers by Sly and the Family
Stone, James Brown and the mad
and mighty Funkadelic claiming to
be the bozo family of spaced out
mothers intent on getting your
booty down on the floor.
What's the time, Ewan?
I believe it's time to boogie.
The Clarence on Saturday.

Fringe staff reviewer Ewan Chevy
gets his own balloon. About time!
Up, up and away! It’s the latest craze that’s sweeping
the Fringe this year.
Festival goers all over Brecon are
talking pictures of themselves with
an Ewan Chevy Fringe balloon, in
front of the stage at one of the
venues. They are then uploading
their Fringe Selfie to the Brecon
Fringe Facebook page.
(Editor’s note: At time of writing this,
the Fringe hasn’t acually started. I
can only assume the writer is going
forward in time to imagine what
might happen.)
So buy a balloon now from Party
Party4U in Lion Street, go to a
venue, get your phone out and up-
load your pic to our Facebook page.
The best post wins another balloon.

The Muse at Brecon
Tex Mex party animals Los
Squideros, a rock opera, authentic
yummy Spanish food, new indie
darlings Cherryshoes and a cocktail
bar - all coming to The Muse at
Brecon for this Fringe.
You might not be aware but this
new venture on Glamorgan Street
is housed in what was the Old
Museum, originally built as a chapel
in 1937.
When the Museum moved to Shire
Hall the building fell into disrepair -
until now that is.
Ruth Gibbs says: “We want it to be
used again and to continue to
inspire, educate and amuse.”
Helped out by David Goff Eveleigh
and the marvellous Department Of
Enjoyment, the Muse at Brecon will
also be graced by the company of
musicians Alan Cooper, Di Esplin
and Simon Newcombe and the
voices of the Alive & Kickin
Community Choir - with drop in
open mic spots.

4 Brothers
Justin Beynon and Paul Rosser are
huge fans of the Marx Brothers and in
homage to Groucho, Chico, Harpo and
the other one, they decided to call their
band 4 Brothers.
They are in fact brothers. Well no,
they've known each other for 25 years
and are like brothers. They're almost
brothers then. Nearly. However, there's
only two of them. They're great singers
though, lovely harmonies.
Other famous 'brothers' who weren't
brothers, include The Allman Brothers
(just two members) and The Sutherland
Brothers And Quiver. Quiver (a ham-
ster) wasn't related at all.
4 Brothers are at Ardent.

Brecon’s Got Talent
Grand Final
‘You can make me dance, you can
make me sing, you can make me
do just any old thing.’ - or so sang
Rod ‘The Mod’ Stewart and his jolly
band of Faces in 1974.
Well, Mary and Gareth at The
Gremlin have taken inspiration from
Rod’s tune and created an all
singing, all dancing contest in the
shape of Brecon’s Got Talent.
Legendary for its mega Karaoke
competitions in past years, he
Gremlin BGT Grand Final starts at
1pm on Sunday. Who knows?
Brecon may see the next Ed
Sheeran.
A Few Covers More
Ah, I see what you’ve done there -
it’s like a few dollars more, the
classic Clint Driftwood movie about
the man with no name. It’s clever
and also puts you at the top of lists
with ABC and Abba.Grabbing two
headline spots this weekend they
feature Brecon drummer Geraint
Powell.

You can’t beat a good old 60s singalong-a-kneesup can you? This lot
does ‘em all. Owen is super well known in Brecon for his pantos. Oh no, I
just got it: I had a band in Aberdare once called the Travelling Winberries.
A Window on BreconBrecon is a busy town full of local and passionate entrepreneurs.
Come and meet the people behind local business at
Brecon Market Hall on 22nd November 10am – 3.30pm

and meet more of Brecon businesses who will help you
with your Christmas present dilemmas.
The celebrations continue until 4pm when the town Christmas
lights are switched on.

They do two sets at The Bank. 2pm
and 7.30pm. Rock on dude.

The Jiveoholics
When it jumped onto the American
music scene in the 1930s, ‘jive’ was
the rock’n’roll, the punk, the Goth,
the death metal of its time - and just
as controversial.
These guys are hottest jump jive
and swing band in the UK today.
There ain’t nobody here but us
chickens!
Blind River Scare
Tim Manning does a solo BRS this
Fringe. Americana, Alt-Country and
Folk tinged bitter-sweet songs -
he’ll have us all crying into our
tequillas. Ardent and the YHA.

St Mary’s
Watton Church
For ukulele fans it a must. For lute
fans it’s a must. You’ll even get to
hear some of the best washboard
players in the UK. I wonder whether
the Derek Guyler Fan Club will be
in attendance?
Providing some great chillout space
with skiffle from The Bones Of Saint
James, a lute recital from John
Eyre and Tanya Walker performing
in the church.
Bob Evans runs an open mic, so if
you fancy getting involved get on
down to the Presbyterian Church
on the Watton.
Jeff Alderman and John Polson
play mandolin and fiddle.

every success for 2014
3MPH
As The Eagles once said: 'Life in
the fast lane, Surely makes you
lose your mind.'
Bet you didn't realise Joe and his
mates were singing that. 3MPH
have a new album 'Life In The
Slow Lane'. No honest.
It befits their slow travel
tongue-in-cheek name of course
and by describing themselves as
an eclectic mix, Blues to Rock,
Country to Folk and anything in
between, they could actually be
Don Henley's West Coast band.
That's how rumours and urban
myths start. Markets Tavern.
Johnny Lucas
Anyone who walks around the
sunburnt celebrity streets of
Cannes Film Festival wearing
flippers, goggles and a snorkel -
and carrying a lilo under his arm
- can have my vote anytime.
Johnny Lucas did, so I say Vote
for Johnny!
Was he making an overtly politi-
cal statement? I dunno. Was it a
plea to be centre of attention?
Probably. He wowed
audiences last year anyhoo, with
his wicky wacky guitar looping
tomfoolery. He's back for more.
Ask him where his lilo is.

Keith Little Trio
Like Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, Artie Shaw, Louis Jordan, Louis
Prima? Then you will love the Keith Little Trio. These guys aren't in
the band, they're jazz people from long, long ago in a galaxy far
from here called the Swing Nebula. Very close to the Jumping Jive
Constellation. Don't go looking for it. They tore it down years ago.
As you can tell, I know absolutely zip about astronomy.
Those of you not familiar with this kind of musical oeuvre will no
doubt recognise the tunes from ringtone downloads or adverts, so
don't worry. They're at The Hours.
Plough Chapel
The Plough is
famous for its
Flower Festival
over the Fringe and
this year the theme
is 'Celebrating Life'
– if you're going to
Brecon Fringe, be
sure to wear a
flower in your hair.
The chapel also
gives us festival
goers the chance
to get involved on
Sunday with
Gymanfa Ganu or
the Big Sing.
Earlier on Sunday,
the service of
worship features
the hymns of Arthur
Sullivan of Gilbert
and Sullivan fame.

The Semantics
Ah Semantics, the meanings of
words as they are actually used
by speakers and not as they
necessarily should be used. We
all knew that, didn't we?
But enough of school work. The
Semantics are prolific and are all
over the Fringe like a nice new
mohair suit from Saville Row,
paid off in ten shilling weekly
installments.
They play songs from Johhny
Cash to Johnny Nash, from Daft
Punk to just plain daft with a new
line up for 2014. Harmonies, twin
guitars and surprises. Splendid.
Huw Parsons and Friends
Painter, photographer, book
publisher, poet and the organiser
of music at St Mary's Church this
year.
He's a mover and a shaker, is
our Huw.
It's not entirely clear as to who
exactly Huw's 'Friends' are this
year but those of you old enough
to remember the fabulous TV
series may be in for a treat.
Don't quote me on that one but
myself I'm looking forward to
hearing Phoebe singing 'Smelly
Cat'. Next year, I hope he invites
along the cast of Cheers.

The Harrisons
Let's get this straight, right from
the start. This is not Harrison
Ford's new band. The star of
Blade Runner and Star Wars
hasn't done a Steve Martin.
These Bristol Harrisons hang out
at guitarist Steve Treble's guitar
shop there. If only Brecon had a
guitar shop. I remember seeing
these guys at The Camden Arms
and also The Clarence many
Fringes ago. Two blokes playing
guitars and singing and a singing
trombonist. It shouldn't really
work but it does, beautifully.
Ardent and The Clarence.
Alive & Kickin'
Community Choir
Singing into life in May 2013
they numbered single figures but
when the choir celebrated their
first birthday, there were over 50
singers. I hear through the
grapevine that this sort of caper
is hugely beneficial to wellbeing
and a bit of a laugh.
The ever expanding choir sing at
The Clarence, The Muse at
Brecon, Watton Church and
outside Pilgrims.
The choir led by Tanya Walker
rehearse on Monday nights at
The Muse if you fancy joining.
