This season’s programme of concerts focuses on the voice as an instrument in its own right and how that gives expression and meaning to our lives. We are featuring works by poets and writers, a capella groups, choirs, classical singers and artists who like to experiment with the incredible sounds the human voice is capable of producing. Naturally, we are taking in some cultural events along the way, launching 2015 with a celebration of The King, Elvis Presley.
Breathe aims to deliver a diverse and engaging performing arts and health programme across the clinical and public spaces of Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals and the local communities of Lambeth & Southwark. Breathe works in collaboration with health and cultural partners to design innovative ways to use the arts and creativity in healthcare to:
Improve clinical outcomes for patients
Enrich the healthcare environment for patients, staff and visitors
Develop individual and community engagement with their health and wellbeing
Provide unique training opportunities for clinical and non-clinical staff
Truly rocking & rolling us into the new year — Kai has been a fan of The King since early childhood. Today she gives a sizzling concert to celebrate his 80th birthday. Forget your winter blues and instead pull on those blue suede shoes!

The piano is possibly the most versatile and exciting of all instruments. However, making it evoke the human voice has possibly been its greatest challenge. Maria explores how the Romantic composer Ferenc Liszt saw this potential hurdle as the inspiration behind some of his greatest piano works.

Breath, voice and the art of expression... arts health research
This concert season we present a number of performances that show how using the voice itself as an instrument of expression can become a powerful tool that allows us to give life to our thoughts, emotions and imagination.
The performers explore this theme in their own unique ways — be it through traditional song (both accompanied or a cappella), through singing collectively, through the poetry and lyrics of their song-writing and experiences of the world, by turning the traditional process of song-writing on its head or simply by experimenting with the amazing sounds that the human voice can produce. Throughout history artists have sought creative ways to express themselves, sometimes without ever being able to use the voice at all, and we include this element to show the amazing skill of composers to do this effectively.
New Year New ConnectionsWe also welcome some exciting new partnerships — London’s Southbank Centre and Song in the City make their debut appearances with us this season and we look forward to working with them over the coming year.
Reading GroupFrom March we take our theme of the voice a step further; partnering with The Reader organisation, we will be offering patients and staff the opportunity to experience how writers use their voice to express their thoughts and emotions and explore what impact this may have on our own life. A regular reading group is planned for St Thomas’ in the Knowledge & Information Centre. Watch out for more information on this in the new year.
