This slide deck, created by Katarina from http://tips.how2improvesinging.com, explains the basic concepts when breathing for singing.
Breathing is such an automatic process that we rarely think about it. Breathing may be a complicated process but it can be described in a simple way.
Imagine a paper bag that is slightly open – if you increase its size, more air will flow into the bag. If you decrease the size of the bag, the air will flow out. This is exactly how we breathe: we increase the size of our chest cavity – more air flows in the lungs that are attached to the chest cavity. Then we decrease the size of our chest cavity, and the air flows out.
The presentation also explains how we change the size of the chest cavity. Make sure to read the slides.

During breathing exercises – focus your attention on exhalation – on how to control the exhalation. If you focus on breathing out, your ribs and diaphragm will be able to relax and take air in freely. When you focus on breathing out, you don’t hold your breath, which can create tension and interfere with voice production.

How do we change thesize of the chest cavity?

tips.how2improvesinging.com

Page 12: Breathe In and Out - Breathing for Singing

First, we can move ourrib cage up and out using

muscles between ribs.

tips.how2improvesinging.com

Page 13: Breathe In and Out - Breathing for Singing

Second, we can contractour diaphragm, which moves

down when contracted.

(The diaphragm is a large muscle separating the chest

andabdominal cavities).

Page 15: Breathe In and Out - Breathing for Singing

The coordinated action of the breathing muscles change the size of the chest cavity.

When the ribs move outand the diaphragm

moves down,

the size of the chest cavity increases and the air is drawn

into the lungs.

When the rib cage returnsto its starting position

and the diaphragm rises,

the air is pushedout of the lungs.
