World’s Oldest Marathon Man

Need some motivation to slip on those running shoes? How about this..

Don’t ever catch yourself saying it's too late to start on that lifelong

goal of running in a marathon: Fauja Singh, dubbed the "oldest

marathon man," recently hung up his competitive running shoes for

good at the astounding age of 101.

Singh didn't come to running with any formal training. When he was

young, he was a farmer in Punjab, India; in the 1960s, he moved to

Britain, where he still lives. Following the loss of his wife and his

fifth son, when he was 89, Singh took up running. "From tragedy has

come a lot of success and happiness," he told the BBC. He ran his

first marathon in London in 2000 and has since competed in eight

additional marathons and a few shorter races. In 2011, at 100, he

became the oldest person to complete a marathon (through Toronto).

Unfortunately, Guinness World Records did not recognize his

accomplishment; Singh has no birth certificate to verify his age.

He competed in his last marathon last year and his final race, a 10km

run in Hong Kong, this February. He finished the event in one hour,

32 minutes and 28 seconds. After crossing the finish line, Singh said,

"I will remember this day. I will miss it.”

“There is only one difference between a long life and a

good dinner: that, in the dinner, the sweet comes last.”

~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Yipes! No, this didn’t

happen here but it’s pretty

much my greatest fear!!

The Funny Bone

Are You Nobody from Nowhere?

It's the cartographic equivalent of calling a song "Untitled": a tiny town

in Jackson County, Tennessee whose population peaked at 250

residents is called, simply, "Nameless."

The most popular account of the town's unconventional title traces the

origins of "Nameless" back to indecision among its citizens over what

to call their hometown when applying for a post office. Rather than

settling the argument, the town's

inhabitants mailed their application off

(presumably using another town's

mailman) with the name field left blank.

Consequently, the Postal Service returned

their application with "Nameless"

stamped in its place, and the town

remained Nameless -- though they did

get their post office.

April  Client  of  the  Month-  Mike  Lay

Mike  Lay  is  a  tall,  charming  man  with  a  Southern  drawl  and  a  gregarious  personality.    He’s  quick  to  offer  a  smile  and  a  joke.

Some  of  you  may  know  him  as  Coach  Lay.    He’s  coached  in  the  area  since  1968,  when  he  began  as  assistant  coach  and  became  head  coach  at  Charlotte  High.

“I  was  born  and  raised  in  Winder,  Georgia,”  Mike  said.    “I’ve  lived  in  Venice  since  1974  and  I’ve  been  a  football,  basketball  and  track  coach  and  a  guidance  counselor  at  Venice  High  School  for  31  years.”

Mike  retired  in  2005  but  even  today  he  volunteers  as  a  coach  for  the  Venice  High  School  girl’s  track  team.

Although  sports  and  coaching  has  been  a  large  part  of  Mike’s  life,  there’s  more  to  this  man  than  meets  the  eye.

“I  play  the  piano  because  my  mother  made  me,  from  third  grade  through  my  senior  year  of  high  school,”  Mike  admits.    “Senior  year,  I  had  to  give  a

piano  recital.  I  was  the  captain  of  the  football  team  and  the  whole  football  team  sat  in  the  front  seats  and  teased  me.”

His  head  coach  at  the  time  refused  to  let  him  quit  piano  and,  in  the  end,  Mike  doesn’t  regret  learning  to  play.  He  still  plays  today.

“When  I’m  frustrated  or  mad,  I’ll  go  take  it  out  on  the  piano,”  Mike  said.  “My  mom  lived  to  be  96  and  during  her  last  year,  I  used  to  go  to  the  nursing  home  and  play  for  her.”

Mike  and  his  wife,  Patricia,  married  in  1964.    They  have  three  grown  children  (a  son  and  two  daughters)  and  five  grandchildren,  some  of  which  live  in  the  local  area.

Mike  enjoys  playing  golf,  but  only  when  season  changes  and  it’s  affordable  again.    He  plays  chess  and  enjoys  going  for  walks  in  the  neighborhood  and  playing  with  his  two  dogs,  Brutis  and  Blackberry.

“Brutis  is  a  170  pound  Great  Dane  and  Blackberry  is  a  20  pound  mutt,”  Mike  said.    “Blackberry  is  in  charge.    She’s  the  alpha  dog.”

Mike  has  been  a  customer  of  1  Stop  Car  &  Truck  Repair  for  years.    He  was  referred  there  by  a  friend.

Mike  takes  in  his  Maxima  and  his  wife’s  Infinity  for  maintenance  and  repairs.

“The  thing  I  like  about  1  Stop,  if  you  just  need  your  oil  change  done-‐  fine  and  dandy,”  said  Mike.    “If  they  find  other  things,  they’ll  let  you  know.    They’re  not  pushy.  They’ll  give  recommendations  but  it’s  up  to  you  when  you  want  to  get  them  done.”

Mike  also  appreciates  the  honesty  of  the  1  Stop  Car  &  Truck  Repair  staff.

“If  your  car  is  still  under  warranty  at  a  dealership  and  you  bring  it  in  for  repairs,  they’ll  tell  you  to  take  it  to  the  dealership  to  get  it  done  free,  rather  than  spending  the  money  with  them,”  said  Mike.    “Not  many  car  repair  shops  will  do  that.”

“If  you’re  looking  for  a  car  care  place  and  you  don’t  want  to  deal  with  the  dealerships,  this  is  one  of  the  best  places  you  can  go,”  Mike  said.    “The  staff  is  knowledgeable  and  friendly  and  they  have  a  free  shuttle  service.  The  whole  outfit  offers  top  A-‐1  service.”
