April Client of the Month- Mike Lay
Mike Lay is a tall, charming man with a Southern drawl and a gregarious personality. He’s quick to offer a smile and a joke.
Some of you may know him as Coach Lay. He’s coached in the area since 1968, when he began as assistant coach and became head coach at Charlotte High.
“I was born and raised in Winder, Georgia,” Mike said. “I’ve lived in Venice since 1974 and I’ve been a football, basketball and track coach and a guidance counselor at Venice High School for 31 years.”
Mike retired in 2005 but even today he volunteers as a coach for the Venice High School girl’s track team.
Although sports and coaching has been a large part of Mike’s life, there’s more to this man than meets the eye.
“I play the piano because my mother made me, from third grade through my senior year of high school,” Mike admits. “Senior year, I had to give a
piano recital. I was the captain of the football team and the whole football team sat in the front seats and teased me.”
His head coach at the time refused to let him quit piano and, in the end, Mike doesn’t regret learning to play. He still plays today.
“When I’m frustrated or mad, I’ll go take it out on the piano,” Mike said. “My mom lived to be 96 and during her last year, I used to go to the nursing home and play for her.”
Mike and his wife, Patricia, married in 1964. They have three grown children (a son and two daughters) and five grandchildren, some of which live in the local area.
Mike enjoys playing golf, but only when season changes and it’s affordable again. He plays chess and enjoys going for walks in the neighborhood and playing with his two dogs, Brutis and Blackberry.
“Brutis is a 170 pound Great Dane and Blackberry is a 20 pound mutt,” Mike said. “Blackberry is in charge. She’s the alpha dog.”
Mike has been a customer of 1 Stop Car & Truck Repair for years. He was referred there by a friend.
Mike takes in his Maxima and his wife’s Infinity for maintenance and repairs.
“The thing I like about 1 Stop, if you just need your oil change done-‐ fine and dandy,” said Mike. “If they find other things, they’ll let you know. They’re not pushy. They’ll give recommendations but it’s up to you when you want to get them done.”
Mike also appreciates the honesty of the 1 Stop Car & Truck Repair staff.
“If your car is still under warranty at a dealership and you bring it in for repairs, they’ll tell you to take it to the dealership to get it done free, rather than spending the money with them,” said Mike. “Not many car repair shops will do that.”
“If you’re looking for a car care place and you don’t want to deal with the dealerships, this is one of the best places you can go,” Mike said. “The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they have a free shuttle service. The whole outfit offers top A-‐1 service.”
