What is a Brake?

A Brake is a mechanical device which inhibits motion , slowing or stopping a moving object or preventing its motion

Page 4: Break System

How It Works• Brakes converts kinetic energy of the vehicle into heat

energy.• Friction develops heat which absorbs kinetic energy of the

vehicle

Page 5: Break System

Breaking Requirements

• Stop the vehicle within smallest possible distance.

• Act instantaneously in case of an emergency.

• Strong enough to sustain sudden braking force.

• Neither slip nor should cause any skid the vehicle.

• Brake lining should have longer life.

• Operate with the least effort.

It MUST

Types of Brakes and its Classification

I. On the basis of purpose served1. Main (Service or primary) operational brakes2. Parking (or secondary ) brakes

III. On the basis of driver’s Ergonomics1. Foot brakes2. Hand brakes

IV. On the basis of Actuating method1. Mechanical brakes2. Hydraulic brakes3. Pneumatic brakes (a) Compressed air brakes (b) vacuum brakes4. Electric brakes

II. On the basis of location in the vehicle

1. Wheel mounted brakes2. Transmission mounted brakes

Actuating MechanismPurpose• Connects brake pedal with brakes & Increase

small force available at pedal to large force at wheel.

Purpose Serve by Master Cylinder

1.Hydraulic Pressure required to operate the system is built.2.Due to reservoir provided with it , it serves to maintain a

constant amount of fluid in the system3. It acts as a pump to bleed or force air out of the brake lines

and the wheel cylinder

Disc Breaks• Disc brakes use a

rotating disc with two stationary friction pads that are pressed against to rotor by the caliper to create friction and heat.

• Disc brakes are more effective at dissipating heat.

Disc Break Rotor

When the lever is activated, a plunger pushes the fluid through the hoses and into the caliper where the pads are pushed onto the rotor, stopping the Vehicle
