Brasfield & Gorrie was the engineering/procurement/
construction (EPC) contractor and was tasked with
designing, furnishing, installing and testing of a
limestone unloading, handling, and reclaim system for
Georgia Power’s Plant Wansley.
This system unloads and stocks-out limestone
received by rail, then reclaims and conveys the
limestone to two on-site silos. The unloading hopper
has “hot rails” for automatic bottom-discharge rail
car gate operation, aided by a side car shaker. A wet
dust extractor control system is used to maintain
dust control. Brasfield & Gorrie self-performed
overall project management, design coordination, site
preparation (30,000 cubic yards earthwork), and
concrete foundations.

The railroad bridge is a 382-foot main lift span that rises 80 feet to allow intercoastal waterway traffic on the Galveston Bay to pass under the BNSF Railroad. The project also included an 800-foot long tunnel under the bay to carry new waterlines. All of the bridge work, including electrical work is being self-performed by Brasfield & Gorrie/Cianbro joint venture.
One of the unique challenges of the project is that the main span was built on barges at the port and then floated in to replace the old bridge. This float-out/float-in phase of the lift span had to be completed within a 72-hour marine channel shutdown, with only a 12-hour window to close the bridge from rail traffic.
