Brandon University Foundation 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
2
Brandon University Foundation was incorporated in 1980 to promote the advancement of higher education at Brandon University and improve the quality of its facilities and activities. We are grateful to the many donors who have since helped us to carry out that mission, enabling us to enhance the programs and services offered to BU students.
In 2013, much of our fundraising focus, through the BUILD Campaign, was on the new Healthy Living Centre, which is now open and being used by many community members. We continue to fundraise for the remaining needs of that facility, as well as for
the other two pillars of the BUILD Campaign: Scholarships and Bursaries, and initiatives for Aboriginal Student Success.
Thank you donors, alumni, friends and fellow volunteers for your continued support in helping us to build Brandon University! I look forward to continuing our efforts in support of BU students.
Sincerely,
Nathan PetoPresident, Brandon University Foundation

GREETINGS FROM THE BU FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
GREETINGS FROM THE BU PRESIDENTDear Members of the Foundation,
Generous Donors, Friends and
Family of BU,
As you will see from this year’s annual report, this has been a very active fundraising year. We have received a number of large and significant donations, both for the Healthy Living Centre and for scholarships and bursaries for students. We have also received funding for scholarships and bursaries that have been particularly targeted for Aboriginal students.
While many donations and awards are listed in this report, some are still pending negotiations on naming and matching agreements. So there will be more good news to come.
I hope you enjoy reading this year’s annual report. I want to thank you for your continued support of Brandon University and the Brandon University Foundation.
With best regards,
Deborah C. Poff, PhDPresident and Vice-Chancellor

BUILD Campaign
Prairie Ford Dealers Association Marking a significant investment in the Scholarships and Bursaries pillar of the BUILD Campaign, the Prairie Ford Dealers Association has donated $50,000 to establish a new award entitled the Prairie Ford Dealers Association Scholarship-
Bursary. Four awards valued at $2,500 per year for the next five years will support Aboriginal students in all years of study in all faculties. Brandon University is pleased to announce this new partnership with the Prairie Ford Dealers Association, which represents over 50 Ford dealerships across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The BUILD Campaign at Brandon University is currently raising $22 million to support an all-inclusive approach to student success. It supports the University’s commitment to focus on the advancement, growth, and solid preparation of our students for thriving careers and engaged citizenship.
Soon we will be entering the public phase of the BUILD Campaign to achieve our fundraising goal for the Healthy Living Centre. We look forward to continuing fundraising for the two remaining pillars of the BUILD Campaign— enhanced scholarship and bursary endowment programs for each of BU’s five faculties and essential support for the Aboriginal student success program.

Good NewsAwards Reception
A wine and cheese reception was held on March 25, 2014 in honour of award donors and student recipients. More than 300 guests were in attendance to celebrate the approximately $1,250,000 that was given out in awards to students during the 2013-14 academic year. These scholarships and bursaries are of vital importance to our institution and to the students who receive them. They help BU recruit and retain the best and brightest students, and they reward students for academic excellence. Brandon University is grateful to the many donors who provide these generous awards.
Brandon University Healthy Living Centre Partnership Celebration
In recognition of the generous funding support from the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon, the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre Partnership Celebration was held on Friday, February 14, 2014 to mark the significant collaboration that made the new facility’s construction possible. The levels of government
contributed $5.31 million, $5.31 million and $1.88 million respectively for a total contribution of $12.5 million. BU staff, students, HLC users and fellow donors were in attendance to celebrate this achievement and to show their appreciation for this investment in the community. The HLC promotes healthy living at Brandon University and welcomes area residents to enjoy newly enhanced health and wellness opportunities. The new facility revolutionizes BU’s programming potential and will enhance student recruitment and retention.
New Athletic Award at BU
Brandon University is pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship for female athletes, through a $10,000 gift by BU alumnus Brian Pallister, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Fort Whyte. The Pallister Women’s
Athletic Award will be awarded to a member of one of the Bobcats Women’s teams on the basis of athletic promise. Mr. Pallister’s donation is being matched by the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, generating an annual scholarship of approximately $900.
“As a father of two girls, I know how important it is to support female athletes,” says Pallister. “My wife, Esther, and I have both benefited greatly from the joy of sport and wanted to share that joy with others.”
“Brian Pallister has been donating to sport at Brandon University for over a decade,” says BU President and Vice-Chancellor Deborah Poff. “He credits his days playing for the Bobcats as a catalyst for his future success in business, public life and his personal life.”

Jerry & Marnie Hemmings Award
Jerry and Marnie Hemmings have established a new endowment fund to support deserving male and female basketball players at BU. Jerry is a former BU basketball player who was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as well as the BU Male Athlete of the Year in 1971-72. He is a BU Professor, Coach Emeritus and former long-time coach of the BU men’s basketball team from 1974 until his retirement in 2004. During his tenure, his teams won 734 games and qualified for the CIS national championship 19 times. The establishment of the Jerry and Marnie Hemmings Award coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the BU men’s basketball team winning three straight national titles—in 1987, 1988, and 1989—a feat accomplished by only three Canadian schools. They also won the national championship in 1996, all under Coach Hemmings’ leadership. Marnie, a Lakehead University graduate and former teacher with the Lakehead Catholic School Board, studied at Brandon University from 1980-1982. She later worked as a registered nurse at the Brandon General Hospital/Brandon Regional Health Centre from 1982 until her retirement in 2010. Their award will support student athletes who best exemplify leadership in basketball and scholastic accomplishment. Preference will be given to students in the Bachelor of Education After Degree Program who have completed the Bachelor of Physical Education Studies degree or students in the Bachelor of Physical Education Studies degree program. Support for BU basketball players from Coach Hemmings will continue in perpetuity through this award. Gifts in support of this endowment can be directed to the Department of Institutional Advancement. Call (204) 727-7374 or toll-free 1-877-282-4483 for more information.
Legacy GivingThe A. E. McKenzie Legacy SocietyThe A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society recognizes the leadership of the generous donors who have established a Legacy Gift for Brandon University. It is named in honour of Albert Edward McKenzie, the first person to leave a legacy gift to Brandon University. Given at the height of the Depression in the 1930’s, this gift saved the University from certain closure. Since that time, many others have given generously through gifts in their will to Brandon University, and have helped to make our institution what it is today.
Legacy Gifts offer many advantages to both the donor and the University. They make a significant impact on future generations of students at BU, allow the University to plan ahead with confidence, and can offer significant tax advantages to donors and/or their estates.
Those who have established a Legacy Gift are encouraged to advise us of their plans. We can then discuss wishes and intentions with the donor and can thank and recognize them for their generosity.

Members who have established a Legacy Gift for Brandon University
A Legacy for Chemistry MajorsChemistry students at Brandon University will have the chance to receive one of two very generous awards thanks to an estate gift established by Dr. Bruce Forrest. The Dr. Bruce
and Mrs. Jane Forrest Scholarships for Honours/Majors Chemistry will provide a minimum of three awards of $10,000 - $15,000 each for full-time chemistry majors entering their second, third and fourth years. The Dr. Bruce and Mrs. Jane Forrest
Scholarship for Physical Chemistry will provide a $1,500 award to the student with the highest combined standing in Physical Chemistry I and II. Established as endowments, these awards will continue to provide funding for deserving students in perpetuity.
Dr. Forrest was member of the Department of Chemistry at Brandon University from 1986 until his illness from cancer led to his medical leave in 2010. His research focused on the use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to determine the structure of biological membrane systems, an area in which he was internationally renowned.
Dr. Forrest lost his battle with cancer on October 9, 2013. He will long be remembered for his dry wit and assurance of academic rigor, and by this wonderful legacy that he has created for chemistry majors.
