The inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl in December 2014 will be played in Nassau’s state-of-the-art Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium, located in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.

The 15,000-seat stadium, a gift to The Bahamas from the People’s Republic of China, was dedicated February 25, 2012 by former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham in ceremonies witnessed by thousands of Bahamians. The original Thomas Robinson Stadium was built in 1981, and work on the new National Stadium at an adjacent site began in July 2009 at a cost of $30 million.

The 190,452-square-foot facility features covered chairback seating on two sides, seating for disabled spectators, broadcast/coaches/game operations booths, a natural grass field for American football and soccer and an IAAF-certified track surface. Renovations to the stadium, including a new track and auxiliary press area, were completed in May 2014.

With the lure of a big city and the ease of tropical utopia, Nassau & Paradise Island are considered by many as, well, paradise. Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, is a bustling metropolitan hub full of culture and modern amenities. To the north lies Paradise Island. Its name tells you everything. It’s 685 acres of pure euphoria, developed almost exclusively to delight and accommodate visitors. Nassau, the capital city of The Bahamas, is located on 21-mile-long New Providence, the Bahamas’ 11th-largest island. Nassau’s main harbor is protected by Paradise Island. The harbor attracted settlers in the early days, particularly pirates. In fact, Nassau’s population consisted mainly of pirates until 1718, when The Bahamas first Royal Governor, Woodes Rogers expelled them, restored order and built Fort Nassau. The Bahamas for centuries adopted Rogers’ motto, “Expulsis Piratis, Restituta Commercia,” which means, “Pirates Expelled, Commerce Restored.” Now, 246,000 people call New Providence Island home, with a large portion of them residing in Nassau.

Junkanoo, a Bahamian national festival, is a kaleidoscope of colors and sound. The rhythmic sounds of cowbells, goat skin drums and whistles, accompanied by an array of brass instruments, create a sweet musical beat that will move you; while brilliantly colored costumes capture your eye, and bring much visual delight. This bi-annual cultural highlight takes place on Bay Street in New Providence and other Family Islands during the early morning hours, from 1-9 am on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and New Year’s Morning.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

MIKE MASONCREATIV DIRECTOR, CATALYSTCREATIV

Mike Mason is currently the Creativ Director for CatalystCreativ, an experience studio. As Creativ Director, Mike works directly with a portfolio of clients to develop visual identities and innovative brand strategies, most notably in the sports and entrepreneurship industries. This past year, Mike’s clients have included the inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, Conference USA, Battle 4 Atlantis, and University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball. In addition to his client-facing projects, Mike also leads the creative direction for the CatalystCreativ brand and all CatalystCreativ events.

Prior to joining CatalystCreativ, Mike worked as an Athletic Marketing Assistant for UConn Athletics, overseeing marketing activities for UConn’s 24 varsity sports with an intent focus on graphic design, digital media, and brand development. During his three years with UConn Athletics, Mike’s work was highlighted by working with two National Championship programs, assisting in the coordination and production of ESPN’s College Gameday, and supporting with graphic design assets for UConn’s first BCS Bowl Game at the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

A Rochester, NY native, Mike is a 2010 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Business with a BS in Marketing. He also completed his Master’s in Sport Management & Marketing from UConn in May 2013. Mike currently resides in Philadelphia, PA.
