When I Met the Queen! I first met Queen Elizabeth II at an event at the Royal & Derngate theatre. She was so
tiny and dainty, much smaller than I had imagined. You couldn’t find anyone more
perfectly dressed. She looked beautiful and was very kind. We talked about my
camera that I had brought with me as she has a great interest in photography. My
camera had an adapted feature of a button that I could easy press to take photographs.
The second time I met the Queen was on Guildhall Road as well, this time at the
museum. She shook my hand and we talked a bit about the museum. She looked as
beautiful as the first time I met her and again wore her lovely white gloves. She is
lovely to speak to and puts you at ease with her demeanour. It was one of the best
moments I have experienced.
I have been lucky to meet many royals in the past and was even the representative of
the hospital that I was staying at (the private hospital of the Ascot family) as a little girl. I
was invited to tea in the garden at Westminster Abbey with the Duchess of Gloucester. I
met her again many times as I liked to attend the military services.
One of my loveliest memories was giving Princess Diana an arrangement of jasmine
and ivy when she attended the opening of a guest centre near the railway. A photo of
the flowers was even in the paper. I also met her parents and her brother at other
community events and church as Charles attended All Saints’ Church. He was very kind
and reminded me of his sister.
When I was a little girl, I caught a glimpse of Princess Margaret at the Racecourse but
wasn’t able to talk with her as it was a Guides or Brownies event.
I also saw the Queen Mother at St. Giles when I was on York Road watching her drive
by. She waved as she passed and Prince Philip’s butler lent me his umbrella. The butler
and I chatted about carriage driving. I would have loved to have had the chance to
meet Prince Philip as I had done carriage driving before!

The look on Helen Mirren face during the opening sequence of The Queen is pretty chilling
(below, right). This powerful scene sets the tone for the whole film and suggests that what is to follow is a classy British film crafted with sheer perfection.
The Queen chronicles the events following the
tragic death of Princess Diana in August, 1997. The film revolves mainly around the conflict
between Elizabeth, played with undeniable
grandeur by Helen Mirren, and Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen). The Queen refused
to make a public statement about the terrible events and thus sparked enormous criticism
among her people. The recently elected Blair
disagreed with her handling of the situation.
The death of Diana, whom Blair referred to appropriately as “the people’s Princess,” caused a
lot of sorrow among the British people, but the Royal Family appeared somewhat indifferent.
This led to a media reaction and a crisis of confidence in the monarchy. With all the turmoil, Tony Blair tried to bring the Queen back from Balmoral to London so as to reconnect with the
people. Perhaps the underlying interest of the film is the fraught relationship between Diana and the Queen, which was always controversial.
The use of archived footage of Diana and people mourning outside Buckingham Palace
increases the dramatic element and gives the film a sense of reality. The movie was a huge success, especially because it allowed us ordinary folk to enter the private world of Buckingham
Palace. I gather a great deal of historical research was used in its making, which boosts the credibility of the film.
The greatest asset of The Queen, of course, is the Queen herself, played with utter passion and
commitment by Helen Mirren; her performance won an Oscar for Best Actress in a leading rôle. Mirren truly is the queen of this film, stealing every single scene she appears in and even
overshadowing scenes which merely mention her. Not only does Mirren look like the real
Elizabeth, she even articulates like her, even walks like her. Michael Sheen's Tony Blair is a persuasive performance too. But all the cast are convincing and offer some of the best in British
acting.
