Curriculum Content

A. Quotation Marks and Apostrophes (1.5 hours)

Objective BS11.1: Know the symbols and rules for transcribing the single and double

quotation marks, apostrophe with capital letters, and the apostrophe with numbers.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with LOC Manual: Lesson 3.1 and with EBAE I.2 about the single and double quotation marks and Lesson 3.2, 3.2a, and 3.2b and EBAE I.4 about the apostrophe.

You will need copies of: Lesson 3: Punctuation List (11.A.1), Lesson 3: Quiz (11.A.2) and one copy of Answers to Lesson 3: Quiz (11.A.3).

You will need a copy of Lesson 3 flashcards (Les3Flashcards.docx).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

The quiz is an inquiry to the knowledge of the students prior to studying Lesson 3 in

class. This quiz is to test to see if the student has read the lesson prior to class.

The quiz contains all of the braille characters the students will learn in Lesson 3. The

directions for the quiz are to match the punctuation to the braille symbol by writing out

the appropriate word.

The purpose of this quiz is to test the students of their knowledge of the new braille

characters from lesson 3.

The instructor will use the classroom flashcards for Lesson 3. The flashcards for Lesson

3 introduces more punctuation marks: apostrophe, opening double quotation mark,

closing double quotation mark, opening single quotation mark, closing single quotation

mark, opening parenthesis, closing parenthesis, opening bracket, and closing bracket.

Start out slowly and pick up speed. Hold each card up and allow the students to shout

out the punctuation marks. Then allow time for you to call on students one at a time.

This will help to allow each student to test their memory.

If time permits you may also want to review the flash cards from Lesson 2.

Have the students make their flashcards for Lesson 3 using the index cards.

Continue to encourage the use of the flash cards in the class room and privately.

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 3.1-3.2 and EBAE I.2

about single and double quotation marks.

Braille Module 11-4

Some reminders to the students:

“Quotation marks are brailled as they appear in print except when the single quotes are used as the outer quotation marks and the double quotes are used as the inner quotation marks. In this instance they are reversed throughout an entire print work. The LOC Manual will discuss in a later lesson how to reverse quotation marks when necessary and to include a transcriber’s note. A transcriber’s note is used when an explanation of the print format changes or to convey information to the braille reader.”

Next the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 3.2 and EBAE I.4 about the

apostrophe.

Some reminders to the students:

“Follow print when using the apostrophe. The capital letter indicator is ALWAYS placed immediately before the letter to which it applies. Therefore, if an apostrophe comes before a capital letter in print, the apostrophe is brailled before the capital indicator. Follow print for numbers that form the possessive case. For example in the word ‘Twas, the apostrophe will be brailled before the capital indicator. A good reminder is that the capital indicator is closest to the letter. When you see a number with an apostrophe such as the number ’99 the

number indicator will come before the apostrophe.”

B. Parentheses, Brackets, and Adjacent Punctuation (2 hours)

Objective BS11.2: Know the symbols and rules for transcribing the parentheses and

brackets and adjacent punctuation.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with LOC Manual: Lesson 3.3 and EBAE I.3 about parentheses and brackets and Lesson 3.4 and EBAE I.6 about adjacent punctuation. They will also be familiar with Drill 10.

You will need copies of: Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet 1(11.B.1), one copy of Answers to Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet 1 (11.B.2), Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet

2 (11.B.3), and one copy of Answers to Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet 2 (11.B.4).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 3.3 and EBAE I.3

which covers parentheses and brackets.

Some reminders to the students:

“Remember to follow print for the placement and spacing of parentheses and brackets. You will also follow print placement when numbers occur within

Page 6: Braille Module 11 Additional Punctuation Literary Lesson 3 Sections

PROFITT Curriculum Module # 11 — Additional Punctuation

Braille Module 11-5

parentheses, except when a missing number is represented as a space. No space is left in braille. This is a good example that when transcribing braille things may be different than in print. Therefore, you need to know the rules and

how they apply.”

Next the class will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 3.4 and EBAE I.6 which covers

adjacent punctuation.

Some reminders to the students:

“Remember that a complete sentence must have the following: 1. a predicate (verb), 2. the subject of that verb, and 3. the words must contain a complete thought. If a sentence does not have these it is an incomplete sentence. When a dash that begins or ends an incomplete sentence is preceded or followed by a quotation mark or some other mark of punctuation, no space is left between the dash and the punctuation.

When an author's name or other attribution follows an excerpt or quotation and is separated from it by a dash, in braille no space is left before or after the dash. Once again, this rule may be different than in print copy.”

Take turns as a class to read the braille (embossed) answers to Drill 10 from the Drill

book. This will help the students to get a visual idea of reading the embossed copy.

Some reminders to the students:

“Since you will be turning in an embossed copy of your manuscript reading the drills will give you a heads up. This is excellent practice for you. Take advantage

of this practice.”

Next students will complete Drill 10 on Page 3-3 using Perky Duck.

Some reminders to the students before they transcribe Drill 10:

“Remember there are40 cells on each braille line. Count every space and cell that will be used so you will have a correct count when you start your transcription. Some of the punctuation marks will use more than one cell. If you do not count

every cell used your count will be off.”

When the students have completed this activity, which includes proofreading their own work, they can exchange drills and proofread each other’s work using the “How to Successfully Proofread” steps.

The instructor will hand out the Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet 1(11.B.1). This worksheet was created for the students to practice their knowledge of reading 10 complete sentences in simulated braille. The students can take turns reading this exercise with another student then write the words out in longhand over the simulated braille. Or you may have the student come to the board and write the sentences on the

Page 7: Braille Module 11 Additional Punctuation Literary Lesson 3 Sections

board, including the punctuation and composition signs, reciting them as they are written on the board. This practice helps the students to realize the importance of sight to speech aids which are very significant in the braille learning process. This activity also helps the students to learn some valuable proofreading and teamwork skills. An

answer key is included.

It is expected that the students will successfully learn to read braille out loud and to

understand what they are reading.

The Lesson 3.1-3.4: Worksheet 2 (11.B.3) was created as a help tool with 10 complete sentences for the students to proofread and find the mistakes in the simulated braille on the following page. The students are to proofread each braille sentence on the second page and circle or highlight each braille cell that is incorrect. The students are to use the Structuring handout to structure the print copy prior to proofreading. This will help them to visualize the mistakes. The better the students structure a lesson the easier it will be to do the actual transcription. Remind the students to look in the rule book. The instructor may want to have them state the rule to support their answer. An answer key is included.

When the students have completed their activity they should have a grasp on what to

look for when proofreading.

C. Review and Test (1.5 hours)

Objective BS11.3: Review and test on the additional punctuation.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with sections 3.1-3.4 of the LOC Manual and the test

created for students.

The handout needed for this section is: Lesson 3.1-3.4: Test (11.C.1) and

Answers to Lesson 3.1-3.4: Test (11.C.2).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

The review includes sections 3.1-3.4 of the LOC Manual. The review is designed to

prepare the students for the following test. The instructor is to go over each section

with emphases on areas that will be on the test. Allow the students to ask any

questions pertaining to the context of Lesson 3.1-3.4. Answer any questions.

The instructor will pass out Lesson 3.1-3.4: Test (11.C.1) and explain that this test includes naming the signs and True or False questions. An answer key is included. This

test may be used as an open book test.

ASSESSMENT

This test is necessary for the students and the instructor to determine the knowledge

acquired over Lesson: 3.1-3.4of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing Fifth

Edition, 2009. It is expected that the students will fully grasp the braille rules for the

following punctuation marks: apostrophe, opening double quotation mark, closing

double quotation mark, opening single quotation mark, closing single quotation mark,

opening parenthesis, closing parenthesis, opening bracket, and closing bracket so as to

continue with the lessons. This test will help both the teacher and the students to

understand the students’ strengths and weaknesses. The outcome will allow the

instructor and the student to work together to strengthen the students weaknesses in

any area.
