RITA and JOHN WRAGG

Reported to the Annual General Meeting was a letter from Rita and John announcing their

resignations from the Committee.

John had been ill for quite a while and their decision was not entirely unexpected. However, shortly after the letter was received John sadly died, the funeral

being on the Thursday following the A.G.M.

John was a local farmer and they had lived in High Bradfield for most of their married life, moving to

Worrall just a few years ago when he retired.

Rita has been a member of the Committee for a very long time and has supported every event possible,

John for a shorter length of time, but has been no less supportive of Village Hall events. Recently they have

been in charge of the Dance nights.

They will both be missed by the Committee.

The Committee sends condolences to Rita and the family.

CHUCKLE CORNER

JACK IS WATCHING YOU This burglar was counting his luck; he had found an open window and was inside in a flash. No noise, beautiful. He started rummaging around for any valuables and came across this exquisite porcelain ornament. Just as he picked it up a voice said “Jack is watching you”. He froze. Nothing happened. So he ventured a little further. Again this voice said “Jack is watching you”. His heart missed a beat. Then, his eyes accustomed to the gloom, he spotted a parrot in it’s cage. With a huge sigh of relief he said “Hello Jack”. Annoyed, the parrot said “My name is Tom. Jack is the Rottweiller”.

MOTIVATION My boss was always keen to motivate us, his staff, to come up with bright ideas. One day, in the mens room, he placed a sign directly above the sink. It had the single word “THINK”. It obviously inspired somebody, because the next day, right below it, and immediately above the soap dispenser, someone had carefully lettered another sign. It read simply: “THOAP”.

IS THERE ANYONE WHO CAN PUT NAMES TO ANY OF THESE PEOPLE

and/or GIVE US AN IDEA OF THE DATE? This old photograph (what wonderful motor cycles) was found on a Facebook page that has pictures of Sheffield. It was

taken outside the Old Cross pub. I am told that one of them is Ned Parkin (but I don’t know which).

THE OLD BRADFIELD VILLAGE HALL MEMORIES OF MRS ENA GARNETT

By Bradfield Newsletter’s Roving Reporter

The new Village Hall was inaugurated in great style by International Tennis Personality Greg Rusedski on 28th September 2007. But the old hall has not been forgotten.

These recollections were recorded in 2010 and Ena was remembering back over 70-odd years.

The hall was built when she was 2 years old and her mother and father were the first caretakers.

Heating was supplied by two black pot-bellied stoves, one at each end of the hall, which had to be cleaned out after each use, scraping out the cokes, clinker and rubbish, then they had to be re-laid ready for the next use.

In the kitchen was a big black range with ovens and a massive range, as recalled, and Ena still has the scar where she burnt herself when she was 3.

According to Ena, her mother loved the place and spent all her time there.

Prior to the war, the village hall was the centre of everything with always something going off … the Young Farmers, Women’s Institute … Ena cannot remember when Badminton started in the village hall … thinking it was after the war. Of this, she says … “I don’t think it was before the war but of course I was only 5 when the war started”

The war years were a bit of a lean time for the village hall because events could not be run ‘for the duration’. Apart from the bus that turned round here, there was a greengrocery man who came round. Everything else you had to do yourself.

During the war the village hall was taken over by REME Officers and Sergeants (conscientious objectors). They had bunk beds and the two fireplaces kept them warm. The soldiers* were housed in lines of huts where the tennis courts now are. “I can remember playing round them when they were vacated.” “There was a store room for the meat and a cookhouse, etc., and they came for water from our stop tap.”

More of Ena’s memories to come … if you are, or know of anyone who is, willing to share their memories, please contact Evelyn on 234 3385.

* Malcolm Nunn, Parish Archivist and local historian, thinks these soldiers could have been members of the Home Guard brought in to guard the dams. He added that men were also housed in the Parish Offices at that time.

IAN WRAGG 23rd June 1961 - 22nd June 2011

Ian lived at Greenlands, Coach Road, Low Bradfield from being 4 months old and attended Bradfield School at Low Bradfield, so very much a Bradfield Lad.

Ian loved to fish as you will see from the recent photo above and went on many a fish-ing trip with his friends and of course liked a pint or two in the local pubs.

The village hall committee asked Ian to quote to build the village hall and at that time he was self employed, the build was too big a job to do himself so he formed a new business with his friend Stuart Megson which they named Stian. The partnership business continued after the village hall was built until sadly Ian passed away.

The committee would like to send our condolences to his family, David , Jean, Susan and his girlfriend Jane and her daughter Roxanne.

Grace and Mick Windle recall …

“Our earliest memories of Ian were when we first moved into Doe House. We first met him as a youth of probably 17-ish, tickling trout in the stream at the bottom of our lane. He then went on to be a keen fisherman.

We only have to look around Bradfield to see much of Ian’s work: Doe House, Doe House Barn, the Haychatter’s and lots of walls built and repaired by him, to mention but a few. He was superb at his job and enjoyed it along with a pint or two in the local pubs.

The best monument to Ian is the new Village Hall, which he built with his partner Stuart.”

Lynn I have been made aware of the following entry in the Bradfield Village Newsletter, with an accompanying photograph. 'This is the phone box in High Bradfield and it is in danger of being lost because of un-der use unless the Parish Council agrees to adopt it (at a cost of £1)' As Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council, this concerns me for the following reasons. The wording clearly gives the impression that Bradfield Parish Council is in some way responsible for the 'under use' of the kiosk, which it most definitely is not. You brought this subject to my attention because B.T. told you that only Parish and Town Councils are eligible to apply for the adoption of telephone kiosk. There is also the assertion that it would cost only £1 for Bradfield Parish Council to take over the responsibility for the kiosk. This is also untrue. The Clerk to the Council has investigated this and has found the legislation and rules involved in the adoption process would be very time consuming and cost far more than the £1 to purchase the structure from B.T. The process also prohibits sub-contracting the maintenance of the kiosk to others. As I informed you, the adoption of this kiosk was on the agenda for discussion at the Land and Premises committee meeting on Wednesday 13 April 2011 . After consider-able debate, studying the adoption process and ongoing responsibilities, it was decided that it will not be viable for Bradfield Parish Council to adopt the kiosk. I should be grateful if you would please print the contents of this communication in the next edition of Bradfield Village News, so as to clarify the situation and explain why Bradfield Parish Council is not able to proceed with the adoption of the kiosk. Kind regards Ian Reeves Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council

In the spring newsletter, there was a report about the phone box in High Bradfield (see reproduction on next page)

This elicited the following e-mail from Ian Reeves, Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council …

29

On the Farmers Market/Sports Day the kitchen was run to raise funds for

Bluebell Wood Hospice. Organised by Monica Naylor, assisted by Anna

Muirhead, helped by Dana Windle and Zoé Muirhead (and with some adult help).

Monica and Anna also organised a Children’s Tombola Table and with Zoé and Dana, sold

cakes round the field, raising £45. Alice Hague ran in the sports and round the

village dressed in a horse suit collecting £125+. The total raised on the day was approx. £400

(and still counting). With many thanks to all who contributed with

baking, donations, help on the day and in any other way.

NB: Bona fide charities are allowed to supply the refreshments at the Farmers Markets. To book a date and get full details contact

Lynn on 285 1227 or e-mail [email protected].

Monday 23rd May and the Phil Beer cavalcade landed in Bradfield. He gave an easy and varied performance that thrilled

a full house of appreciative fans.

He was joined by John Jones who was on a walking tour and happened to be in the

area.

Organised by Steve Dennis of the Postcard Café and Post Office,

it was all in all a very good night out.

13

This is the phone box in High Bradfield and it is in danger of being lost because of under-use … unless the Parish Council

agrees to adopt it (at a cost of £1),

The telephone equipment cannot be saved but it would be a pity if the structure itself

disappeared.

Having collected the plants for the Barrels Hazel and Lynn set about deciding what will go where.

It has long been thought that the area in front of the public toilets on Sands Lane was a bit of an eyesore.

The in Bloom group has decided to now tackle this problem. So … watch this space !!!

Fun was had by all at a Right Royal Wedding Party in aid of the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami appeal on the day of the royal wedding.

The day started with a group of locals in wedding attire doing a procession from Bradfield Church to the village hall singing “God Save the Queen” all the way. The walkers were greeted at the hall by over 100 guests who had come to watch the royal wedding on the big screen—’ooing’ and ‘ahing’ over the dress, vows and all important balcony kiss.

A British tea party was provided by the Sheffield Vox—a place where young people who have struggled to attend full time education can go to learn vocational skills such as building, hairdressing and catering—and British themed cupcakes were donated by Sue Pow-ell, a very generous member of the village hall committee. Once the food had chance to settle, there was live music followed by a City Limits dance class.

Kat Buck and Karen Dennis would like to thank Bradfield Village Hall for allowing free use of the hall and volunteers who helped on the day, as well as all the companies who donated raffle prizes, catering (The Vox and Sue Powell), decorations (The Postcard Café) and entertainment (Steve Mason and Jane from City Limits). Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came and made the day a success and raised a total of £1,200. Not a penny was spent on the event so all the money raised will go to the charity.

A further £350 has been raised since the event bringing the current total to £1,524. Fund raising continues.

Gertie Greenthumb Late summer in Bradfield

If your garden is anything like mine, your plants will be showing the stress from this strange, very hot, very cold, very wet and very dry spring and summer that we have been experiencing in the UK. It has been a season of extremes. All bar one of my clematis have suffered from wilt, my hollyhocks are covered in rust (despite treatment) and my gooseberries were tiny (but it has to be said, quite delicious!). It has, however been perfect weed growing weather (what weather isn’t?). Whilst I have been battling with thistles and buttercups, I have to admit that I have really enjoyed all the beautiful poppies that seem to have thrived this year. The brambles, at the time of writing, are beginning to ripen, I have munched on a few whilst walking around Agden and I suspect there will be lots of blackberry jam in my pantry as you read this! Keep up with the deadheading and some bedding plants will bloom all the way into Autumn. However should you wish, you can let some run to seed. Collect the seeds and store them in an envelope in a dry place ready for sowing in the spring (a much cheaper alternative to buying plants, if you have the space of course). Some of your shrubs may now also need pruning, particularly any shrubs that flower on new growth. Prune these just after the blossom has finished, in order for the shrubs to put on new growth for next year. If you want to be digging up potatoes for your Christmas dinner, now is the time to plant them. For a good crop, line the planting holes with lots of well rotted manure and maybe some nitrogen rich comfrey or nettle leaves. I did this with my main crop this year and they have been beauties despite receiving intermittent water in the dry weather. You can also make a liquid fertiliser from comfrey and nettle, it is a bit smelly but plants love it and, as they don’t have noses, they don’t care! Soon one of the big garden jobs with be the raking of leaves. Despite having a very small garden myself I seem to be able to fill three bin bags full each Autumn. Don’t let these go to waste though, if you have a spare hidden corner in the garden, you can store these bin bags full of leaves and in 6 months time you will have gorgeous leaf mould with which to mulch your flowerbeds.
