Dear AI-,AC Member,

The staff of the Bulletin, the officers and the board of directors ofALAC sincerely regret the substantial delay in getting the October/November and the December/January issues of the Bulletin toALAC members . We especially apologize to the advertisers whohave been so patient and understanding during this time. We areaware that this delay has impacted timely communications for clubbusiness to and from the membership and we are presently in theprocess of addressing this situation.

Due to the resignation of the managing editor and in the absenceof anyone else capable and willing to undertake this considerabletask, the Dec/Jan issue of the Bulletin will be the last one for thetime being in this magazine format. To immediately restore vitalcommunication to the club membership and keep the cost to aminimum (there will be no advertising revenue to offset printingand mailing costs) the board of directors at the February meetingdecided to resume a newsletter format bulletin to be sent out bi-monthly. This should start this spring with a May issue.

I know the members of the club appreciate all the work and thecontribution Susan Giles made in establishing, developing and pro-ducing the Bulletin in this outstanding and professional magazineformat and the huge effort and personal sacrifice that MarianneNixon has made in trying to continue the Bulletin and maintain thehigh quality that we have all come to appreciate and expect. How-ever, it has become obvious that this is an effort which involves toomuch time and expense for anyone to do by themselves entirely ona volunteer basis. So for now we will have a newsletter to provideregular and timely communications.

Again I thank you all for your patience and understanding. I alsowelcome any suggestions for the future of the ALAC Bulletin.

Larry Bruton.President

Dear ALAC Member:

As one year draws to a close and another begins, I ammindful of the things we have accomplished and theopportunities that lie ahead. I am optimistic that the club willmove ahead in a positive direction as a result of thechallenges that are before us in 1996.

ln October the new Breed Standard and Judges Educationcommittees were selected from among 26 applications, all ofwhom are to be commended for their effort and contributionin responding to the request for qualifications. Susan Giles,Chair of the Breed Standard Committee and Don Hanson,Chair of the Judges Education Committee, have theircommittees organized and are working toward the goals ofhaving draft plans for the February Board meeting, and thecombined five year plans and presentation for the NationalSpecialty and Annual meeting in June. Both committeeswelcome suggestions and questions from all members.

ln another area of some progress, the minutes of theOctober Board meeting were reviewed and approvedaccording to the new Board guidelines in time for theOctober/November Bulletin. I hope this heralds the Boardand Officer's renewed commitment to the importance ofimproving communication with the membership. The Bulletinhas unfortunately been delayed in its publication and mailingto the membership in the last couple of issues, andrepresents one challenge to get more help to the bulletinstaff.

I hope that you were as impressed as lwas with CassandraDe La Rosa's excellent report of the AKC conference oncanine genetics. Cassandra represented ALAC at thisconference and in addition to this fine report she hasidentified several areas for potential future action andresearch in cooperation with other breed clubs. Pleasecontact the Board or Cassandra if you are interested infollowing up in this area.

Bill Russett and members of the Finance committee havebegun to gather budgets from all ALAC committees inpreparation for presenting a preliminary club budget to theBoard in February. The plan is to be able to present acomplete club budget for the year ahead at the Annualrneeting in ..!une with some proposals for ways to increaserevenue generating opportunities. We have some importantcommittee chairmanships open at this time. We need to findpeopie to fill these positions as soon as possible so as notto impact the functioning of the club. lf you or someone you

know is capable and interested in serving as code of ethics, handbook, local club liaison, membership promotion oryearbook sales committee chairman, please let me oranother Board member know.

An area of club business that came to light this fall andneeds attention is membership renewal and club dues.Dues renewals are due by September 1st. The Bylawsprovide a grace period until December 1st, after whichmembership is terminated and requires reinstatement tocontinue in the club. During the grace period however, clubprivileges such as voting are suspended, this year nearly athird of the members fell into the grace period, so lets dobetter this year and eliminate the need for expense ofsecond and third notices.

On another exciting and dynamic forefront, at least twomembers of the club are working on getting ALAC ontosites, on the world wide web, through the lnternet. This isa fast growing area for people getting information aboutdogs, and we need to be officially and properly representedthere. When someone looks up Lhasa Apso they should beable to find ALAC.

Finally, it is with great sadness, that we mark the untimelypassing of Lynn Lowy in November. I am sure however, that just as we will miss Lynn, her legacy and service to thefancy will continue to serve us all long and well.

Happy New Year to all. Let us1 996.

Bobbie Wood. You may start sending your 1995 awardforms as soon as your Lhasa's title has been published inthe AKC show results. lf you do not subscribe to thispublication, the rule of thumb is that the results arepublished approximately 3 months after the given show. However, when you receive your certificate of title ftom theAKC, you may send in your form with a copy of thecertificate.

We must adhere to the April 1 , 1996 deadline for both formsand photos for the 1996 presentation. Remember, oneaward per form please, and if there is a special way youwant your plaque arranged, please make this clear in wordsand drawings when submitting your paperuork.

Ray Sledzik. No report submitted.

The awards video format instituted by Larry Bruton appearsto be a great success with all National attendees. Thisannual video presentation is permanenfly filed away inALAC's historian library. Save your favorite photo for theAwards Presentation, and when you send your Award formto me, send a photo and $3.00 to Larry Bruton. Don't forgetto mark the photo with dog's name and award designation. We need your help to make this program fun for all; seeingthe dogs is really a treat for everyone.

Mary Schroeder. ALAC'S RESCUE NETWORK tnColorado, I adopted a female black and white Lhasa fromthe pound in Colorado Springs. She's a "doll" even thoughshe is 12 years old, deaf, and has 3 legs, I'm sure I'll find ahome for her eventually. I also had to euthanize a femalethat was given up by her owner. That's the hardest part ofthis job, but I know she would never have made a suitablecompanion for anyone-sils was a biter!.

Temperament problems are the main reason we need toohave a rescue. Not all dogs have as severe a bitingproblem but breeders need to do a better job of educatingthe public and buyers on the temperament of Lhasas andhow to train them. The cuddly bit of fluff at 8 weeks needsto be trained--perhaps at puppy kindergarten. Someserious attention needs to be given early to socialization.Although the puppy is so cute, it has to be taught not to bite.Professional help from trainers should be suggested to mostnew owners.

I'd be interested in hearing from the membership-yourrecommendations on training tips you give to new owners.I'd be happy to pass on this information.

The Rescue Network is starting to take form. We have thefollowing volunteers from the States indicated. Looking atthe States involved, you can see we have quite a few holes. Please contact me to add your name to the list. We not onlyget calls to place dogs---we also get many calls from peoplehoping to adopt a Lhasa.

Thanks to Joyce Johanson, we received publicity in DogWorld magazine. That one article brought in many callsfrom the public. I also have to thank Joyce for a donation tothe rescue fund in both of the last months.

I have been told by members of several regional Lhasaclubs that one of their members does rescue in their area.I would very much like to have the names of theseindividuals. lf a club does not have such a person at thepresent time, I suggest that one be designated and send metheir name, address, phone #;, etc.

Donations to Lhasa Rescue can be made to: ALAC RescueNetwork, c/o Mary Schroeder, 53gS S. Miller Street, Litileton,CO 80127 Tel. 1-800-699-311s.

Carolyn Herbel. Your continued support of this fund whenyou send that little extra along with your dues payment plusplaying the Raffle and Lhasa Game at our NationalSpecialties, have made it possible to help our memberswhen they have trouble.

I received the following card "Thank you, doesn't say itall, but at least ff sfarfs to tet you know how very muchyour kindness fouched our hearts." signed Steve & Joan

Also included was this letter that lwoutd like to sharewith all the AI-AC members.

Dear Carolyn,

Please convey the following to ALL the ALAC memberchip. Steve and Iwould like fo express our sincerc gntitude for the overwhetming supportthat all the AIAC members have given us.

Never in our "wildest dreams" did we ever think that we would be therecipients of the BeniteztWks fund.

we are gntefully accepting this generous consideration with the followingcondition that when we arc back in our home we witt replace the initiatamount along with our own donation so that the Fund may continue to growand help otherc in similar circumsfances.

It has taken much longer than we thought gefting back to our home. Therc-building process seems endless. We feel tike displaced persons. Iheone thing that has goften us through the honor is that we are here andhealthy, and all our beloved dogs were rescued.

Again, thank you ALL for your support and well wishes.

Most sincerely,

Joan & Steve Kargel'

Campylobacteriosis Hits The Dog Shows

It was recently reported at some southern Oregon dogshows that dogs were suffering from a parvo-like illnesswhere severaldied from it. The symptoms are very similar -can't keep food down, don't want to eat and have the runs.

TAKE THEM TO THE VET, have a fecat done and a CBC.lf it is Campylobacteriosis, it will test as a low positive forParvo, but the fecal will show Campylo and not parvo. Themedication to be used is cephalexin (Keflex). After sixweeks the bacteria is shed and treated dogs cannot infect.

This bacteriosis is strange in that it does not always havethe telltale Parvo odor. You think the dog is just a litfle offwith loose bowel movement from show stress. But it can killfastl One woman reported that her bitch got the runs oneday and was dead the next.

lf this ia a bacterial disease, treatment with antibiotics shouldbegin quickly given the short time between onset and deaththat has been reported. Be on the lookout for this newthreat to dogs!

Ann Lanternan. The futurity ballots have been counted andthe membership has voted. ALAC will stay with six regionatfuturties and a Grand Futurity with the National Specialty.

The Grand Futurity will be judged by a panel of three judgeswith awards going to Best puppy in Futurity, Best Adult inFuturity and a Grand Futurity winner chosen from the BestPuppy and Best Adult.

Along with a change in the Grand Futurity format in 1g97,new rules and policies will be needed.

We have had difficulty in the past getting nominations forjudges. I hope we will receive a number of nominations forthe 3 panel Grand Futurity judges.

The futurity nomination numbers have greafly increased overlast year at the same time, 1gg5 - ,103, 1996 - 125. pleasecontinue to support the FUTURITIES.

Scheduling conflicts at the National Specialty inCleveland this past year resulted in the MCP measuring onlya few dogs during Specialty week. From January through November 1995,ALAC has added:13 Family memberships (one was from outside the US).32 Single memberships (4 from outside the US).11 Family memberships from members who lapsed butapplied for reinstatement.25 Single memberships from members who had lapsed butapplied for reinstatement.6 Members were added by changing single memberships to

family memberships.3 Members were lost when changes were made from family

membership to single membership.

I want to encourage all ALAC members to promote ALACmembership and activities to their Lhasa owning friends, who are not members as well as to their puppy buyers.

Please remember that I handle new membershipapplications odt Do not send renewal dues to me; they gothe Treasurer.

Joan Dudman. No report submitted.

Kenneth Troy. I am presently revising the rosterprocedures for a better working relationship with ourmembers. As of this writing I have instituted the followingprocedures to coordinate the distribution of both the Bulletinand member correspondence.

1. I have just received a list, from Carolyn Herbel, of whichmembers are paid for 1996.2. I am sending out a set of labels to Joyce Johanson of the176 members that are unpaid to remind them that they willbe dropped from the roster, as members in good standing, effective Dec. 1, 1995.

3. I will be eliminating all unpaid members from the rostereffective as of now and they will not be receiving the nextissue of the Bulletin, saving ALAC considerable money, untilthey pay their dues.4. I have checked with Amy Andrews, Ann Lanterman,Carolyn Herbel to be sure that the roster is up to date andall member addresses are correct.5. I have instituted a procedure, to provide all chairmen whosend out ballots, with a list of current members in goodstanding, to enable them to check off the names of memberswho participate in a vote on any ballot questions.6. I have suggested to Larry Bruton that any requests forlabels or lists of active members, other than those chairsthat need them for ALAC business, be charged the cost ofpreparing these lists or labels. The charge will be nominalto cover the cost of material and postage and paid direcflyto me. ln this way I do not have to billALAC and then AI_ACbills the recipient.7. ln the August-September Bulletin a notice was runinforming members that I am now the Chairman of theRoster Committee and to send all requests for addresschanges directly to me. This will speed up the namecorrection process and eliminate mistakes.L l have volunteered to handle the mailing of back issuesof the Bulletin to those members who have, for whateverreason, not received their Bulletins.9. ln this regard I will keep a list of any member that claimsthey have not received their Bulletin and provide the Editorof the Bulletin with a bi-monthly printout of members sentcopies. Hopefully we will then be able to track down thereason why Bulletins fail to reach a member.10. I discussed with Marianne Nixon having a notice in eachissue of the Bulletin regarding the availability of priority Mailfor the Bulletin at the cost of $18.00 annually for anymember that wants their Bulletins delivered as quickly asthey are mailed out. I can add a priority Mail line to anylabel so the editor will know who gets this service.

Hopefully all of these remedies will help cure some of theproblems we have encountered with members not receivingBulletins, ballots and other club correspondence. I wouldlike to eliminate as quickly as possible this annoyingproblem.

I welcome any other suggestions the Board may have tomake our club as responsive to our members as possible.

Judging in Englandby Bobbie Wood

About five years ago I received a leuer from theLhasa Apso Club in England inforrring me that Ihad been elected to judge their National Specialryin 1995. As the first American to have thisopportrnity I was thrilled and I happily acceptedthis assignment. The wait would have beenunbearable had I nothad the good fortune to havebeen asked to judge in Norway, Denmark andFinland. Theirjudging procedure is different fromours in that they do what is called "qualityjudging" before placing a class of dogs. "QudityJudging" iivolves exanining and moving eachdog individually, dictating a critique to asecretary, and then rating each dog with a 1,2, or3. Only tbe dogs with the "1" rating stay in thering to be placed first through reserve (5). Ilearned a great deal from this process and theexhibitors really appreciate these critiques.

In England tbe process is somewhat different thanin the Scandinavian Countries. It is closer toours in America but you have to write a critiqueon the first two dogs and mention the third placedog. They also enter their dogs in more than oneclass and witiout a good steward a judge wouldbe totally lost. Some classes are just repeat dogsand my wonderful steward inforured me whichdogs had met before and how I had placed them. You only have to sort out the dogs that have notmet and you can almost do that on paper. I didan Open Show (no CC's offered) in order tobecome familiar with the judging procedure. How proud I was to watch my adult Bichon goBest in Show , fry Puppy Bichon, andDalmatian win their groups ( Bichons are Toysin England) and my Adult Shiba win his Group. My Chinese Shar Pei, Shih Tzu adult and Puppyall placed in their groups.

Aside from Dog Shows, Sarah Fitzgerald and Ihad a wonderful time being tourists and showingJune Frankl her country. We went toWestminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace,Parlianent, St- Paul's Cathedral, Windsor Castle,Hever Castle and attended the annual cocktailparty at The Kennel Club. We saw two Musicalsand a comedy, went to Calais, France on a HoverCraft from Dover, England and had a wonderfultime. We also had a Lhasa "Lettuce" to groomso we felt right a home.

Anyway the following is the critique of theSpecialty that gets printed in the English Dog

Newspapers. Hope you enjoy it and it gives yousome idea about the English Lhasa Apsos.

CRITIQUE OFLHASA APSO CLUB

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWocToBER l, 1gg5

I would like to thank the Officers, Committeeand club members, and exhibitors for presentingme with a day that ranks as one of the highpoints of my judging career. The entry(1881223) was a challenge to be reckoned with, classes were large and the quality of Lhasa Apsoswas very high. I had been looking fonvard tothis assignment for five years and was notdisappointed. I judged dogs thar couldsuccessfully compete anywhere in the world and Iwas truly honored to have been presented withsuch an outstanding enury.

My overall impression was very positive. Mostentries had correct balance (longer than tall) forbreed type and coat textures were outstanding. The majority of heads were pleasing with amoderate stop and oval eyes that were correctlyplaced. Some heads could have a narrowerbackskull. Bites for the most part were correctwith goo4 large, strong teeth. Temperamen8were superior, not a growl, a cuded lip or even atail dropper. One exhibitor asked me not to saytoo much to her dog as he would get too excitedand wag his tail uncontrollably. Mycompliments for maintaining such charrringpersonalities in your breeding progmms"

Some work is needed in the front assemblywhich consequently affects front movement. Ihad some very straight shoulders, short upperarrns, and badly bowed front legs. Some entrieslacked front reach , moved too wide in front orwere too narrow and appeared to cross overcoming at you. Pounding and bouncy gaitswere other movement faults that were apparent. Iwant to see a smooth gait with equal reach anddrive front and rear. Upright carriage also adds tothe overall silhouette of elegance and balance andcorrect front construction is vital to the picture.
