Warehouse reorganisation – from numbered groups to locator technology

Warehouse reorganisation – from numbered groups to locator technology

The SSI SCHAEFER compact storage principle – your investment for a future-proof solutionE Potential saving – order picking time: 30 - 50 %

E Analysis of the entire, physical parts installation at 100 %

E EVERY individual part is assigned to a permanent storage location

E SSI SCHAEFER transfers a fully operational warehouse system – ALL storage locations are marked

E The marking system matches the existing number key at your company – optimal connection to the goods management system

E Reorganisation possible without interrupting operation

E The system can be transferred to new parts areas to in-house management – no additional planning costs

E New storage locations can be assigned in-house

Practical example: Parts storage in a car dealership Practical example: Parts storage in a car dealership

Current status2-tier racking system

The warehouse is comprised of a two-tier racking system with a base area of approx. 350 m2 without wheel and tyre storage.

The storage space roughly corresponds to dealer profile I: Sales of 1000 new vehicles per year.

Reorganisation – Step 1

Conversion to locator technology

Reduction of approx. 30 % of the shelving units

Reorganisation – Step 2

Reorganisation of the shelving layout

Display of free space

Reorganisation – Step 3

Goods issue counter with drawer units for 1100 parts.

When using drawers and storage trays in 400 and 600 mm deep shelves, approxi-mately 50 % less area is required in the small and medium-sized parts area in com-parison to previous storage systems.

The 4 step conceptStep 1: Concept study as a decision-making tool

Supported by software developed in-house specifically for the concept study, SSI SCHAEFER used known parts data and features to determine the actual space requirements for the parts warehouse equipment. This means that the equipment proposed for the new warehouse was developed taking into account all functional requirements.

The customer benefits from many years of experience offered by the specialist intralogistics company.

SSI SCHAEFER also included the procedural framework, staff deployment and the necessary implementation costs in the concept study. This provided the necessary security during the planning phase.

Step 2: Intralogistics – detailed planning

Taking into account the current and planned parts quantities, the spare parts are assigned to a permanent storage location. The assignment takes into account all special features as well as the relocation data for the parts. Special customer requirements were included in this process. The detailed planning process formed the basis for implementation and the foundation for the warehouse relocation.

Step 3: Complete package – implementation

The warehouse to be supplied and equipped as part of the carefully agreed to building schedule by SSI SCHAEFER without any intervention by the customer, set up ready for operation, with labels and signage ready for start-up and handed over on time.

Step 4: Relocation planning and support

A relocation represents a particular challenge. SSI SCHAEFER provides the necessary support.

Relocation planning and support includes pre-sorted relocation lists and labels, SSI SCHAEFER reusable transport containers as well as other means of trans- port, and relocation support for on-site staff.

Relocation – Theory and Practice

Location planning is used as the basis for relocation

Nothing is left to chance in this process. The removal of parts is pre-determined, as is the transport equipment and subsequent storage location.

Reusable transport containers from SSI SCHAEFER are ideally suited for use here as transport equipment.

The practical implementation of the relocation process is carried out with computer support. This makes it possible to respond to any modifications that become necessary.

Removable relocation labels accompany the small and medium-sized parts to their new compartment and help to locate the parts during the start-up phase. The labels can be removed later so that only the actual compartment identification remains.

The storage of large and bulky parts, e.g. wings, exhaust systems, bumpers or glass panels, requires shelving that accommodates the shape and size of these parts. We offer 2 shelving depths and heights, plus a wide range of accessories.

The all-round enclosed upright with the new, multi-variable bolt-free system, permits the crosswise suspension of both faces. A bridging crossbeam can be used between 2 shelving bays, as well as within the upright frames, to ensure the optimum storage of shaped parts.

The shelving structure, and subsequent expansions during ongo-ing operations such as disassembly work, can be completed easily and quickly.

E Bolt-free design for rapid assembly Bay lengths 994 and 1282 mm, shelving depths 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800 mm, different heights for single-tier and multi-tier designs

Shelves • Steel plate, painted silver or galvanised • 30 or 40 mm high • For dividing the shelving bays into varying heights • Slots for inserting separating panels, slot spacing 41 mm

E Frame profile/lug spacing The slot and lug spacing of the uprights allows R 3000 to be flexibly configured using an extensive range of accessories in system pitch of 53 : 53 mm

E Multi-tier installations with the corresponding pre-planning can be retrofitted

E High load-bearing capacity up to max. 5000 kg per bay

Guidelines based on regulation BGR 234 (formerly ZH 1/428):“All storage installations are to be equipped with sufficient and glare-free lighting. The lighting installations must be designed and arranged so that they are protected against mechanical damage. The nominal lighting strength of the general lighting should be at least 100 Lux at a height above the floor of 0.85 m. For more intensive tasks by sight, e.g. for small parts warehouses and reading tasks, the nominal lighting strength should be at least 200 Lux. Light and heat sensitive warehoused goods can necessitate other meas-ures.”

Lighting installation

SSI SCHAEFER has created a special lighting range that meets the nominal light strengths without glare required by the workshop guidelines in all areas of the shelving platform equipment.

E The lights are integrated into the support structure of the platform level and are therefore largely protected against impact damage

E Assembly opposite to the aisle direction to create un-obstructed area in front of the highest shelf, with clear view of the stored material for personnel

E All support profiles in the middle aisles are prepared for the installation of commercial cable conduit PG 9/1 or other installation material. SSI SCHAEFER uses only compensated lighting

E Emergency and reference lighting according to VDE 0108 and DIN 4844 and DIN 5035 Part 5, is available and can be installed on request

Warehouse Systems for Parts Storage

Warehouse Systems for Parts Storage

Maximum storage density in the small parts area is so clev-

erly combined using system-integrated variability and the

largest possible flexibility with the bulky parts warehouse,

that the challenges created by trends towards multi-brand

strategy and the significant increase in product range and

variety among automobile manufacturers can be met.

SSI SCHAEFER provides a comprehensive product range

of special accessories for the specific requirements in the

parts trade:

Containers with various divider options can be used in the

drawer-based concept due to compatible system dimensions

thus increasing clarity and order picking speed in the ware-

house.

The integration of heavy-duty drawers with dividers com-

presses the number of parts close to the service counter and

improves the processes and speed. A highly flexible solution

to store bulky and large items are steel plate storage trays.

They can be moved as complete units in the drawer on the

racking and if necessary, can be easily removed from the

compartment.

Special designs for easy to manage, high density storage of

large volumes of bulky parts are simple to create using varia-

tions of the comprehensive standard range, and on request,

are available quickly.

Storage of Small and Very Small Parts

Storage trays and insert boxes

Shelf containers

For maximum use of storage space, containers of different sizes can be used for small parts. To do this, use of shelf depth is maximized by inserting dividers.

The dimensions of the shelf containers are tailored precisely to the shelving systems. This ensures that no valuable storage space is lost both in terms of shelf width and shelf height. Labelling options for all compartments and the drawer-based principle of shelf containers are standard for these systems.

The shelf containers are available in steel, polypropylene or polystyrene with labelling and divider options (of great benefit in large and small warehouses). Conductive models on request.

Another option for storing small parts and bulky goods is offered using steel plate storage trays that can be divided multiple times width-wise using dividers. The storage trays are placed on the shelves or support profiles, which are also located on upright lugs.

SSI SCHAEFER insert boxes made from plastic are ideal for the storage of very small parts. Various sizes are available: 100 % of the space in the drawers is used.

Components with special geometry/suspended storage

SSI SCHAEFER designs and supplies individual shelving systems for storing special parts. Whether pallets, special containers, jointed shafts, spring bars, etc.; for every item that needs to be stored, we find the right storage location to provide optimal support for modern IT-controlled warehouse man-agement. As a system manufacturer we offer many advantages that pay dividends to our customers from planning to on-site implementation.

There are numerous items for which suspended storage is specified by the manufacturers for technical reasons. To achieve this, SSI SCHAEFER created the ideal solution from the variety of exist-ing systems.

We would be pleased to meet with you regarding your individual logistical and technical warehous-ing requirements and to develop practical and application-specific solutions. Let us take on your challenge!

Page 18: Br automotive solutions en

35

Warehouse Systems for Parts Storage

Night-time Delivery and Incoming Goods

The integrated night-time delivery functions as a central incoming goods area during the day with potential handover to the mezzanine level.

With platform systems, an incoming goods option for the individual shelving levels is available. Here you have the choice between two-wing door sets, sliding rails or a railing gate.

For inside storage of goods in the individual platform levels, various options are used, such as forklifts or simplified goods lifts. Here, too, SSI SCHAEFER provides total solutions from one single source.

Space-saving, mesh gate sections can also be designed as cascade-type, movable mesh ele-ments on request.

Space in the incoming goods area is absolutely essential for a functional warehouse. This is the only way to ensure that larger incoming orders can be temporarily stored and processed easily.

Warehouses with a large number of orders require an outgo-ing goods area with online shelving etc.

The reduction in waiting times is the basis for 100 % service orientation and customer satisfaction. To do this, your incoming goods must be operational virtually 24 hours a day, offering the flexibility of night-time deliveries.

Dividers for night-time delivery, consisting of structural steel mesh with one or two wing door or sliding door sets are part of our product range.

Page 19: Br automotive solutions en

Automotive Solutions

The requirements for a highly flexible and dynamic parts supply system in service operations, as well as supply in the traditional spare parts supply business are increasingly determined by shorter lead times. At the same time, comprehensive ranges with widely differing turnover frequency levels with as short order picking and travel times as possible need to be en-sured to meet financial considerations.

SSI SCHAEFER offers integrated counter systems and drawer unit modules which provide a very high storage compression level and availability in close proximity.

In addition to a robust and functional standard design, the counter surface can be optimally customised using individual selection of worktop materials and shapes. The full integration of screen workstations is also pos-sible as is the positioning of the counter system within a multi-tier SSI SCHAEFER platform system.

Warehouse Systems for Wheel and Tyre Logistics

Car dealerships and car showrooms are increasingly relying

on total service concepts to offer their customers added val-

ue and maintain regular contact with the operation. Included

here are services such as the inside storage of the custom-

ers‘ tyres and wheel rims.

SSI SCHAEFER offers a variety of solutions for wheel and tyre

logistics that is unique to the industry: both fixed systems

on ground level or multi-tier platform design incl. the neces-

sary supply and disposal systems as well as mobile solutions

based on manually operated mobile racking systems, either

on ground level or on 2 levels with integrated steel platform.

The flexibility in combining the R 3000 racking system also

permits the implementation of double depth inside storage

strategies as well as operation using electrically driven shelf-

servicing devices. All relevant components for this equipment

are manufactured in-house.

A variety of reference systems offer clear testimony −

Customer Tyre Storage – Operational Variants Compared

Tyre and wheel rim cross beamsTyres and wheel rims are carefully stored on specially designed SSI SCHAEFER horizontal beam profiles

With conventional warehousing, fixed shelving is used with a service aisle located between each shelf. This takes up valuable storage space. This is why mobile racking is more cost-effective in the long term.

With mobile racking technology, only one single operation is required. The shelving units are positioned on carriages and the aisles are created as required simply by repositioning them. An increase in valuable storage capacity of up to 85 % for single-tier installations and over 100 % for multi-tier instal-lations can be achieved with this method.

SSI SCHAEFER prefers and recommends direct, permanent access to every wheel set. Double depth inward storage con-cepts can be implemented easily using the system, but are subject to the system-dependent limitations in terms of the access to the lower and upper storage levels in the racking.

The work loads placed on employees when moving loads in ergonomically far less favourable positions need to be taken into consideration when choosing a double depth solution.

The specially shaped horizontal beams for tyres and wheel rims are simply suspended on the prefabricated upright frames without using bolts. They are also designed to reinforce the shelving bay. The individual levels can be adjusted at any time in increments of 53 mm. In this way heights can be adjusted to fit the size of the tyres and wheel rims. At the same time there is the option to mount shelves in the holder lugs to fully exploit the functional features of the shelving.

Four bay widths, three shelving heights and the option of turning single bay shelving into double bay shelving, or vice versa, at any time, clearly demonstrate the inher-ent flexibility of this system.

Automotive Solutions

There are many concepts for wheel and tyre logistics; even today most companies decide in favour of traditional, multi-tier shelf-supported platform systems. The most important advantages of this concept are:

E especially cost-effective design with strong, shaped steel plate components made in series production

E permanent and direct access to each storage compartment and every tyre set

E parallel access on multiple levels permits the optimal response to peak load times

E On request additional storage density can be achieved based on double depth inside storage, meaning that the ease of use of this solution is reduced due to the nature of the system

In combination with intelligent solutions for vertical transport, up to 4-tier racking systems are possible offering maximum storage capacity, where the individual performance requirements of the specific project are always the main focus in choosing the best solution:

E simplified goods lift with or without an accompanying person in the lift car

E hoisting equipment with open hoisting platform

E transfer stations on every platform tier with secured transfer positions for vertical transport via forklift

Customised requirements can be easily implemented by SSI SCHAEFER; including on covered asphalt surfaces. The installation of multi-tier solutions is possible with a sufficiently stable base, such as a former car park, and has been implemented in practise many times.

The solution for maximum storage compression and space utilisation including height. On the mezzanine, the cars run at the same height on the steel rails integrated into the mezzanine construction.

E large block loads made from multiple cars can also move on the platform using just one car and speed up access times

E as the maximum expansion levels, up to 5 storage levels can be implemented on top of one another, (with integrated anti-tilt protection in the rail system), the operation can then be carried out using only a special control device

E an often used combination is setting up a volume-com-pressed parts store on the ground tier in accordance with the SSI SCHAEFER compact warehouse principle, and highly compressed use of the top tier with a mobile racking system for wheels and tyres

E the steel platform for this challenging combination optimized in terms of design and engineering is also manufactured in-house by SSI SCHAEFER

E our mobile racking systems are maintenance-free and only require a minimal amount of maintenance that should typically consists of rails and drive components to protect against excessive contamination

Warehouse Systems for Wheel and Tyre Logistics

Mobile solutions that can be moved via crank drive are required when the maximum volume usage possible in terms of technology has the highest possible priority. All the benefits of permanent and direct access to every storage compartment and every tyre set are retained with this solution. Due to higher investment costs, the cost-effectiveness of this solution is greatly dependent on customised and optimised layout planning. Benefits of a ground level mobile racking system:

E the most cost-effective solution for maximum storage compression

E the car with special SSI SCHAEFER undercarriage does not require any running rails on a sufficiently stable base and can be used directly on the existing floor

E a flat guide profile screwed onto the base on the rear of the racking ensures perfect functioning and in the event of the relocation of the system can be easily dismantled by the custo-mer and re-constructed at the new location

Safe Hazardous Substance Storage – a Hot Topic

The safe handling of hazardous substances is one of the most important tasks in protecting the health of employees in the company.

The employer has a wide range of obligations. He is required to determine the hazard potential of the substances used, as well as the working practices used, and take appropriate measures to protect persons against health risks and the environment against substance-related damage.

An important part of these safety measures is the correct storage of hazardous substances. SSI SCHAEFER storage systems represent the state-of-the-art in terms of technology and thus form a reliable component in your company‘s safety concept.

2 cl (a liqueur glass) of a flammable liquid is enough to generate an explosive atmosphere in an empty 200 l container.

“Nothing has ever happened here...”

The three requirements for an ignitable vapour/air mixture:

1. Source of ignition (mechanical spark, electrical spark, chemical reaction, static loading, hot surface, open flame)

2. Flammable substance (gas, liquid, solid)

3. Oxygen

A further condition is the correct mixture ratio between a flammable substance and oxygen.

E In the event of an accident, insurance coverage may not be provided

E Personal liability of the company owner for any damages or injuries

E There may be significant costs involved in disposal and renovation

E Incalculable production failures in disposal and/or the event of damage

E The resulting damage to a company’s image could last a long time

Steel Container Directive (Stahlwannenrichtlinie; Stawa-R) Containers made from steel must be constructed and tested in line with the technical regulations of the Steel Container Directive). The previous type test is replaced by the declaration of compliance from the manufacturer.

Declaration of Compliance Declaration of compliance from the manufacturer following advance test.

DIN EN 14 470-1 Standard valid Europe-wide for the manufacture of safety cabi-nets. The primary objective is to minimise the fire risk in con-nection with the storage of flammable substances and protect the content of the cabinets in the event of a fire.

Operational Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV) This regulation, that became effective in 2003, implements multiple European Directives in German law with the objective of consolidating regulations from various existing laws into one single ordinance. This has produced the following: VbF (Verord-nung über Lagerung und Abfüllen brennbarer Flüssigkeiten; Ordinance on the Storage and Filling of Flammable Liquids) has been rescinded. Technical regulations continue to apply until new regulations are approved, re-classification of hazard categories, duty of disclosure not required, hazard assess-ment assigned a greater significance, company responsibility increased (liability risk).

Technical ruling for flammable liquids (TRbF 20) Regulates the safe handling of flammable liquids. Appendix L, point 1.1, defines safety cabinets as special equipment:

... ... they are used to store flammable liquids in enclosed containers.

More Than a Shelving System

SSI SCHAEFER succeeded in winning the contract from the Linde deal-ership Schrader Industriefahrzeuge for the complete design, planning and equipping of a compact warehouse plus office space. Result of the re-design: bright, modern working space, flexible storage system, faster access and improved response times, optimised space utilisation, greater flexibility. Pick volume virtually doubled, preparation for shipping increased by a factor of 10.

In Spring 2006, the decision was made to consolidate warehousing and to re-design the Essen-based warehouse completely during ongoing opera-tions. The analysis of the current situation determined around 10.500 items for storage, split up in a parts mixture of 8.800 small and very small parts for drawers, approx. 1.400 medium-sized or shrink-wrapped parts in storage bins or on shelves as well as around 300 large and spe-cial parts. After specifying the future spare parts structure and the parts groups, SSI SCHAEFER was then able to start the detailed planning work.

In total, the shelving length in the new, almost 2.50 metre high compact warehouse at Schrader covers around 250 metres, filled with the latest racking technology. The warehouse is now equipped for a capacity of 13.100 items. The separate small hazardous goods warehouse is de-signed in compliance with the requirements of laws and hazardous goods regulations, and meets essential safety standards with the drip trays, for example. The installation of a pre-picking zone with racking system for supply boxes as well as a packing bench for optimal shipping preparation work ensure efficient storage and order picking processes and fast access to the stored goods.

“Despite the increased stock, we have been able to virtually double our picking time from 90 to around 160 picks per day using the locator technology, the structured processes and the new warehouse equipment”, confirms Thomas Hurdelhey, Warehouse Manager at the Linde Gabelstapler dealership.

The re-design and re-fitting of the new com-pact warehouse was completed as scheduled within four months following the contract being awarded. The warehouse and the adjacent office areas are bright, clean and clearly laid out. The new office equipment with components from the Schaefer office furniture range such as the Planova desk system, elements from the Tetris cupboard system and the Pilos wall system offer workstations designed and equipped in line with ergonomic principles, and also provides a pleas-ant working environment.

“Optimal utilisation of the space, short routes, faster item access and a flexible warehouse structure – with the same amount of space we have now significantly increased the capacities, the cost-effectiveness and the efficiency of our warehouse thanks to the Locator technology and the new equipment from SSI SCHAEFER”, sum-marises Hurdelhey. “And all that with a transpar-ent investment and growth reserves for around five years. This means that our objectives have more than been met.”

Two in One Go – Individual Storage Concepts at Hans Hess Autoteile and Motair Turbolader

Hans Hess Autoteile GmbH has expanded its main ware-house in Cologne with a flexible, 3-storey modular shelving system including integrated conveyor technology. At the same time and in the same hall complex, the warehouse of the company‘s subsidiary Motair Turbolader GmbH was implemented with the individual design of a two-storey shelf-supported mezzanine construction. Results: Two intelligent solutions with capacity for growth for a complex, fast growing range of products.

Since 1929 the company Hans Hess Autoteile GmbH has been supplying trade and industry clients with high qual-ity spare car parts and replacement parts, as well as other product-specific supplementary products. The company Mo-tair Turbolader GmbH was formed in 1971 to develop small turbocharged aeroplane engines and today is a specialist supplier with a comprehensive product range and a repair shop for all turbocharger brands, as well as a development partner for special applications.

The strong growth in turnover and the resultant success of both companies, both of which had hit their limits in terms of capacity, necessitated a new logistics solution that was im-plemented at the main Hess Group site in Cologne. Here the car parts and turbocharger specialist have together created a warehouse that ensures an optimised flow of orders and goods, as well as 100 % access to all items.

The objectives were clearly defined: A high level of availability of products in the range, as well as an optimal internal mate-rial flow process, and all this with short movement and order picking times. In addition, the conveyor technology at Hans Hess Autoteile was to be integrated into the racking system and at Motair the clean area had to be clearly separate from the dirty area.

United in a hall separated by a dividing wall, 2/3 Hans Hess Autoteile and 1/3 Motair, and with over 2000 m² of storage space, SSI SCHAEFER has designed and equipped a manual, customised warehouse for both companies. With conveyor technology and a rapid-open gate, the hall components are directly connected. A total solution that wins out on a number of counts:

A pallet warehouse for interim storage in the incoming goods section and a connected 3-tier modular shelving system are housed in the first section of the hall for Hans Hess Autoteile. The mezzanine warehouse with a basic area of ap-prox. 1200 m² forms the core of the system, complete with racking. All three tiers are interconnected with a gate hoist as well as stairs. The mezzanine construction comprises standard elements. Storage and transportation is carried out in approx. 3700 containers from the intralogistics specialist.

Nevertheless: A modular storage system in itself is nothing new. What is more impressive is the design and planning that SSI SCHAEFER has developed. For example, the existing auto-mated conveyor technology has been integrated into the racking system at the company’s request to ensure optimal space utilisation across three levels.

The company Motair has over 40,000 parts in the second section of the hall, and these are also stored on a two-tier mezzanine construc-tion in an R 3000 system. Special feature: To handle the delicate components and protect them against dirt, the clean area is strictly separated from the dirty area by a wall, and marked in colour. To ensure ‘on brand’ design in line with the CI concept, the pallet racking and the racking system was delivered in the company colour of “blue”.

This means that both companies have an intel-ligently designed warehouse setup that meets their individual needs and offers them the ideal equipment level for the future.

A Display Platform for Bicycles

The company Fahrrad XXL Feld GmbH is highlighting the meaning of its name using an apparently ‘floating’ platform integrated into the sales area. Up to 1000 bicycles wait ready assembled for customers. Special feature: The partly 2-storey warehouse is clearly and attractively identified with the sporting world in terms of design.

Across Germany the company Fahrrad-XXL Group operates 14 specialist stores and is one of Germany’s most popular bicycle brands when it comes to sales. “As we were planning to expand our shop area due to increasing demand in the store close to Bonn, we wanted to achieve maximum use of the space and storage volume as well as optimise the logis-tical processes with regard to customer service”, explains Peter Feld, Managing Director at Fahrrad XXL Feld.

Once the sales area at the specialist store had been tripled in size and the old area was gradually modified to fit with the new space, SSI SCHAEFER integrated a mezzanine system with an open design, directly in the sales area. As the new storage space was to be visible to the store‘s customers from both inside and outside, it was essential that the mezzanine didn’t just look like an industrial system. “Our task was to visually integrate the entire system, including the required functionality, into the sport-focussed store area”, explains Michael Winterberg, Project Manager at SSI SCHAEFER.

In addition, staff needed to be able to transport the bicycles easily from the top mezzanine level to the bottom.

The mezzanine warehouse, 2 tiers high in parts, forms the heart of the new storage area. The construction consists of standard elements from the SSI SCHAEFER range and cov-ers around 525 m2 at a maximum area load of 300 kg/m2.

The levels are connected using stairs. To integrate the mez-zanine even further into the visual design of the sales area, SSI SCHAEFER painted all non-galvanised parts slate grey to match the sales area. The warehouse was planned down the smallest detail and supplied, fitted, fully set up and handed over on schedule in a carefully agreed construction schedule of just 1.5 weeks.

To make access to the bicycles easier for staff members, rails on the stairs allow rapid and simple inward and outward movements of the goods. There is also the option for future expansion, for example by using automated conveyor tech-nology. Whereas previously part of the sporting goods were located off the store site in another warehouse in the nearby location of Troisdorf, all 16.000 bicycles and 2000 home sporting products are now housed on site.
