Comet II is a worthy son of the legendary Galaxy of Bozedown! However Comet’s achievements, both with his own show success and also his progeny’s, both in and out of the show ring, rival that of his Sire. Houghton Hall Alpacas secured a half-share in Comet II, and he is no longer available to outside stud service. However, his genetics are still available through purchase of either females pregnant to him, or his progeny.

Comet’s progeny are easily identifiable through the fact that his low SD is highly heritable, giving a superfine buttery handle to their fleeces, alongside which they are beautifully fine, they maintain their low microns as they get older, and with enviable density. The complete package for advancing fibre quality.

Dear Breeder,

This online stud brochure for 2015 (doing our bit for the trees) allows us to offer you an impressive line-up of stud services, with much greater flexibility, so that we can add younger males as they become proven.

On the inside back page we have outlined our pricing structure, which enables clients to access large discounts for multiple bookings of breedings. And always remember that a female purchased from us and returning for mating automatically receives a 30% loyalty discount. (discounts cannot be piggy-backed).

The reason we run a stable of 40 plus stud males is due to the fact that some males are improvers, some finishers and some are starting blocks. When you come to us for your herd breeding requirements, we not only offer you the top genetics, but also we will work with you in order to recommend the best male to suit your requirements, and so help you to make the biggest advances in your breeding programme every year.

Each female has her place in each breeding programme but, to make progress, it’s important to identify and then cover her with the male who will improve the areas she needs improving, and reinforce the positive qualities already established. We understand our males, and what is achievable with each of them. Each year of a breeding programme is a stepping-stone to an ultimate élite alpaca.

In a productive breeding programme you should see an improvement in each generation. We know this because we see our herd as a whole improving year on year, and then every few years we see a massive jump forward, which is very satisfying.

We have some of the most successful and proven bloodlines in the world. We concentrate on genetic improvement based on sound breeding lines, with known and proven parentage.

We look forward to sharing our knowledge and working with you towards your breeding goals. We wish you many beautiful, healthy and happy crias!

Mary-Jo and Joy

Bozedown Frisbee Bozedown Patriot

Frisbee is certainly an eye-catching male, with his faultless conformation and style. Then you realise he has powerhouse genetics with all the great names he carries within his pedigree! Names like Boz Galaxy, Jolimont Conquistador, Jolimont Galliano, Boz Alonso, Boz Memory, Boz Anastasia and Boz Charm. All super pre-potent sires and dams!

Frisbee was breeding in-house for his first few years, while we tried him on a number of different types of females. During this time we found that certain things ring true with all his progeny. They are ‘typey’ and carry incredible fineness, density and brightness throughout their fleeces. Thus, he has earned his place in the illustrious ranks of the pre-potent Bozedown Studs!

Patriot is a Supreme Champion in his own right, and his progeny speak for themselves. As you can see in the fleece shot of Utopia, Patriot produces stunning progeny with advanced fleece organisation and brightness, along with fineness and density. If you have fine females with low standard deviation and want to take your progeny to the next level, then Patriot could well be your choice!

Reagan is an older chap but you would never know it to look at him! He has wonderful conformation and substance of bone; his fleece is under 22 microns at 14 years of age. He was awarded Supreme Champion at the BAS National when he was 10 years old. We showed him again at the National the following year and the Judge commented that his fleece was as fine as the males half his age in the class.

This residual fineness is a trait that Reagan is passing on to his progeny. Their fleeces are fine, soft handling, bright and carrying a very fine well-organised crimp style that is uniform across the alpaca. We are constantly on the look-out for alpacas that carry dense and residual fineness through their genetics. If female, then they are the alpacas that we keep in our core élite breeding female herd.

Ulysses is a strong-framed macho male, son of the legendary Bozedown Galaxy. His fleece is exceptionally dense and fine. Ulysses always stamps a very strong frame and very ‘typey’ head, and with excellent overall coverage on his progeny. They also carry dense, bright fleeces, maintaining fineness.

Tudor is a compact male who was imported from Peru for his superfine fleece. This superfine trait is very evident in all of Tudor’s progeny. If you are looking to improve or reinforce the superfine fleece traits in your alpaca herd, then Tudor is a fantastic choice of male! When evaluating our herd, we know when an alpaca has Tudor genetics by the ultra-soft handle to the fleece, aka ‘Tudor handle’, as we call it.

Tudor has produced many offspring (W, BG, LF and MF). His handle and fineness are two of their main attributes, but he is certainly not limited to these traits. His progeny are also known as carrying dense, well-organised, impressive fleeces.

Talon was purchased in 2009 for the great genetic package he could offer to complement our well-established Bozedown pedigrees. We are happy to say that he has fulfilled our expectations. Talon’s progeny carry great bone density, with fleece length and density, fineness and excellent handle.

The purchase of Talon, along with Dynamics and Point Blank, resulted from Mary-Jo attendance at the World Alpaca Conference and National Show in the United States in 2009, when she could envisage the possibilities that these new genetics would bring.

Escapade is a very impressive Macho with fabulous presence and conformation. Escapade is not available for outside stud services, but you can secure his genetics by purchasing females pregnant by him or by way of his progeny. Houghton Hall secured a half share in Escapade in 2013, with Escapade’s first progeny arriving in the 2014 season.  They are like peas in a pod, and all exhibiting exciting fleece attributes and carrying on the Rodrigo brightness.  Impressive genetics for any breeding programme.

Escapade’s sire is Jolimont Rodrigo, now in his 18th year and still producing a fleece that is under 22 microns with a very processable length. We are thrilled to have Escapade to carry on the dominant genetics of his Sire. Escapade’s fleece is well-organised, dense and fine, with brilliant brightness and length.

Dynamics was secured from the USA for his incredible genetic package! His Sire Majestic Peruvian Jeremiah is a genetic powerhouse and is a highly decorated male through both his own show success and his progeny’s, a multi Futurity winning male. Dynamics has carried these genetics on through his progeny, producing highly organised fleeces with incredibly density.

In 2009 Mary-Jo ventured to the World Alpaca Conference and National Show in the United States..... not intending to buy but couldn’t resist when she saw the quality.

Chicago is a strong-framed Accoyo Stud Male with a fabulous temperament that is inherited by all his progeny. Along with this he is carrying an abundance of fleece, producing a yield greater than 6 kg per annum, with excellent brightness and length. Chicago has a very valid place in our breeding programme. If you are looking to strengthen the frame, add length to the fleece and maintain fineness, then Chicago is the Macho for your breeding female. Each and every one of his progeny has shown great improvement in these areas.

Pernod has a World Class pedigree. He recently returned from France, after completing 8 years sterling work for the late Mme Genevieve Lyon’s premium alpaca stud, on a half-share basis. We are very happy to have him back on our Stud team. Although we have bred on from his original Bozedown progeny, we believe that he still has a lot to offer, a Supreme Champion son of 2 Supreme Champions, Bozedown Galaxy in the UK and Jolimont Densey of Bozedown in Australia. A strong-boned Stud, his fleece is tremendously dense and well-structured.

Ascendant’s first crias were born in 2014, and have truly inherited that ‘wow‘ factor!  Solid frames and extreme brightness is their initial impact. We are sure they will make just as much of an impact on our breeding programme as both of his splendid progenitors, grandsire Galaxy and sire Rodrigo have done. North Star has a multi-Supreme Champion Sire and a highly impressive Dam. North Star catches your eye every time with his powerful frame. His fleece is soft handling, dense and brilliantly bright. We are very excited to cross these new genetics with our already well-proven lineages.

With so many outstanding Studs at Bozedown, we are often spoiled for choice, and so North Star missed out somewhat in 2013. Although we did get him proven that year, this super male only has 1 cria to his name so far.

With 6 of his progeny due this spring, we are looking forward to some impressive crias from him.

Achilles is an outstandingly genuine male, and is very quickly proving himself to be a prepotent male…. his crias have exceeded our expectations, they are simply superb! Peas in a pod and the spitting image of their sire!  His crias are showing all the signs of inheriting their sire’s residual fineness, which is a very exciting prospect.

Achilles is a lovely, compact male with an exceptional soft-handling fleece, brilliantly bright and with superb density. We cannot wait for the next crop of crias to hit the ground running. If you want to take your female to the next level then don’t think twice about using Achilles!

Although Achilles has relatively few progeny, we feel that his great potential makes him well worth nominating in the Futurity, and we look forward to seeing how his progeny compete amongst the best in the country.  We are sure that other breeders will soon appreciate the potential we have already identified.

Top Gun is a very impressive fawn male, sired by Comet II; his first progeny is a stunning fawn with excellent density and fineness, just everything we are looking for in our young males! Top Gun’s fleece is extremely dense and uniform in both colour and micron. As you can see from his fleece stats, Top Gun carries his Sire’s low micron and standard deviation genetics, which we are confident will be carried on again down the generations into his progeny.

Omen and his progeny have had great show success and with all his crias you can see the stamp that their sire has produced. They all have his very typey, lovely head style and frame. Some studs are improvers and some are finishers; with Omen he is a finishing male. If he is partnered with a genetically strong female then Omen will make a very impressive improvement - for example Bozedown Premonition, a multi broad ribbon winner in both 2012 and 2013!

Revel is a stunning dark fawn macho with great presence. His fleece is uniform in colour and is an extremely dense fleece with ultra-fineness and handle, and with an abundance of length.

We had high hopes for Revel..... Well, he realised those hopes and surpassed them in one fell swoop! Revel only needs to produce a grey and then he will have produced all the colours in the alpaca colour spectrum; these were produced from only white and fawn females! So, prediction of colour is impossible, but the quality is completely reliable. Like himself, Revel’s progeny have incredibly bright, soft handling, well-organised fleeces with excellent density. We are now trying to wait patiently for this years’ crias.

Bourbon is an incredible male; the quality of fleece that he produces in all colours is beautiful, with such glowing brightness that you could almost say they carry lustre! He and his progenys’ fleeces are all highly aligned, dense and beautifully soft! Bourbon has produced a lot of brown for us, but he has also produced every other colour, including grey! His Futurity Champion Herdsire Bozedown Talisman had produced a grey and so we covered Bourbon over some grey females. So far he has produced 5 beautiful greys.

The underlying joke at Bozedown is that the browns are on the increase. Those of you who know me will understand this! I have never bred brown alpacas on purpose. I could always appreciate a quality brown but it was the one colour I was not worried about having in our fields...... well that has changed! Bourbon has opened my eyes to Brown and our fields have an ever-increasing number of brown alpacas.

Thunder is the grandsire of Legend II.When we imported Thunder from Peru in

2005 we had not seen a blue-black male like him. Thunder has done us proud over the years, improving our blacks but, unlike some other males, we have not surpassed him.... Thunder is still playing a vital role in our black breeding programme. He produces a very high rate of black progeny, all with excellent density and bright, soft stylish fleeces. Each time we introduce another coloured sire to bring in another genetic lineage and to improve the blacks, we then cross those progeny back with Thunder to reinforce the blue-black colour. We have had excellent results using this approach.

Nyetimber is without question the most outstanding grey alpaca to be found anywhere in Europe. He has now won over 27 grey championships, beating off all-comers of all ages. With his fantastic conformation allied to a fleece worthy of any white stud male this Jaquinto son offers the complete package for either the specialist breeder of grey alpacas or indeed colours. He has produced a significant number of grey progeny and, whatever the colour, the quality and consistency of fleece being seen is nothing short of remarkable, with his progeny, even at such relatively young ages, going on to win broad ribbons. His crowning accomplishment, in winning champion Herdsire at the 2013 British Alpaca Futurity, beating all-comers including whites, is testament to just how valuable a Herdsire this boy is. The high percentage of greys and the quality of the progeny certainly influenced our decision to secure a half share in Nyetimber! In 2011, 8 Bozedown females were covered by Nyetimber and we were thrilled with the results; 6 females and 2 males, of which 4 were grey female crias. We are very pleased with the percentage of greys as they are very hard to reproduce.

Lone Wolf is delighting us by carrying forward the impeccable genetics of ‘The Chief ’. Lone Wolf is very similar to his striking sire, both in stature and in fleece qualities. Idaho won the 2013 British Alpaca Futurity Suri Herdsire Championship. This is a very prestigious award to win, and speaks volumes on what Idaho is achieving through his progeny! Idaho has already produced many Champions and Supreme Champions in the relatively short time he has been working at Stud. His progeny are very ‘typey’, with extremely lustrous fleeces, excellent lock definition and a silky handle.

Idaho has excellent strength of bone, and carries an abundance of fleece with tremendous independence and density to his locks.   Idaho’s progeny are beautiful; all carry very independent lustrous fleeces with great density.  He is an excellent stud to use across the colour spectrum as he is not colour dominant and produces a range of colours.

18,000 guineas was the top price at the Alpaca Classic Auction in September. This was for Bozedown Avatar, Champion white female at both the BAS National Show and Alpaca Showtime this year. She was clearly the outstanding female offered in the Classic Auction this year. With Jolimont Rodrigo as her Sire, and Bozedown Galaxy as her grandsire this impeccable World Class pedigree attracted keen interest. Our congratulations go to Houghton Hall Alpacas on their highly astute purchase. The next highest price paid was 12,000 guineas, which was for the  Breeders Selection  lot offered by Bozedown Alpacas. This successful bidder Viv Maton of Adara Alpacas - a specialist suri breeder - was absolutely delighted, as this bought her the opportunity to lock into Bozedown’s latest genetic  gains, and choose from any 2013 born female - a total of 45 huacayas and 10 suris ranging from white through to black. (The successful bidder on the Breeders Selection  lot from last year’s auction won Champion Brown and Best of British in 2014 with their pick.)

The top price for an Alpaca Stud female this year was 9,000 guineas, bid by Shirley Isseyegh of Merrifield Alpacas. Her discerning eye had lighted on AUK Brown Eyed Girl, a solid light brown suri sired by The Synergist of Alpaca Stud, and scanned pregnant to AUK Phoenix Gryffindor. The average price for the females sold at the auction was £8750.

In addition to the auction there was a full programme of seminars over the weekend. Fleece guru Cheryl Gehly kicked

off the weekend with “How to make the next generation better”. During this the delegates were able to get their hands on fleeces from some of the alpacas available in the auction - a great chance to learn more about the alpacas on offer. After lunch the inimitable Brett Kayson waxed lyrical about “The Art and Science of Judging”, after which both Cheryl and Brett gave “Expert Opinions Candidly Given” on some of the auction lots - a nail-biting time for both Bozedown Alpacas and the Alpaca Stud, as

their prize animals were given the expert once-over in front of everyone, among which were many new owners.

After the auction came the “Ice Bucket Challenge”. Mary-Jo Smith and Nick Harrington-Smith had already been challenged, but Brett Kayson gamely offered to join them which increased the amount raised to £650. Unfortunately for them, the ‘bucket’ turned out to be the one on the front of the tractor - filled to the brim! So more of a deluge than a light shower! After which a completely drenched Mary-Jo went around hugging everybody! But on a more serious note, the money was donated to Cancer charities, in memory of MaryJo’s father, who had died earlier in the week.

Supper was served, and there was still plenty to drink from the free all-day bar! - a relaxing social evening after a busy day.

Diary DateThe Fourth Annual Alpaca Classic Event and Seminars will be held on 5th and 6th September 2015.Brett will be back to give further Seminars and share more fascinating insights and gems with us. Some of the top breeding from both Bozedown Alpacas and The Alpaca Stud will again be offered for auction - an unmissable opportunity to gain access to genetic developments that have taken many generations to achieve.

Biosecurity We aim to ensure the highest possible biosecurity for our own farm, while also being able to offer our clients peace of mind for their own alpacas’ health and farm biosecurity. Hence we no longer offer on farm matings. Whether you decide to opt for drive-by matings or mobile matings, both parties benefit from increased biosecurity; PLUS, your cria stays at home to enjoy, instead of being away for at least 2 months. Drive-bys: All clients’ females visiting our farm are welcomed to a disinfected neutral area in a separate area of the farm, away from our paddocks and animals. Visitors are asked to be tested for receptivity prior to their visit.Mobile Matings: We ask you to nominate a neutral area where we can set up our own pens and disinfected mats.Mileage charge will depend on the number of Studs used and the distance travelled. We will keep this to a minimum. e.g. no charge up to 50 miles distance for 2 studs requiring 2 visits.
