BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CORVALLIS

AT A GLANCEOur programs are built around FIVE PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS for positive youth development:

Character & Leadership

Academic Success & Career Development

Healthy Lifestyles

The Arts

Sports & Recreation

Our goal is to achieve substantially better outcomes in these critical areas, paving the path to GREAT FUTURES.

Our main facility celebrates its 15th year in 2013!

Page 4: Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis - Impact Guide

Our annual Club membership is $25. The true cost to serve a child for a year is $1,500.

BE YOURSELF.

The Clubhouse.

The Club’s 40,000 square foot facility provides a welcoming, safe, and supervised place for kids to go after school. Our friendly, energetic and well-trained staff members work with specific age groups using proven youth development strategies.

Club members can choose to participate in programs in the Games Room, Arts Center, Learning Centers, Technology Lab, or Gymnasiums — all designed to interest, educate, and inspire our Club members.

Our Character Counts program teaches youth a framework for ethical living. Simply put, we help kids make better choices by learning and living the six pillars of character.

BE LEADERS.

1,800 Club members ages 5 -18.

Character &Leadership.

EMPOWERED TO LEAD. Torch Club is a leadership and service club for members ages 11-13. Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special needs of younger adolescents at a critical phase in their character development. TORCH CLUB members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness, and social recreation.

PATH TO THE FUTURE. Tech Team engages youth ages 8–13 in a tech-rich leadership and career development program. Members of Tech Team 1.0 learn trouble shooting, peripheral installation, software and driver installation, and customer service in a dynamic, fun tech lab setting. In TECH TEAM 2.0, kids get inside the computer. They start off with an empty tower, then each week they receive a component, learn what it does, and install it in their tower. By the end of the program they take home a computer they built themselves from scratch.

Our programs empower youth to become responsible caring citizens, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, learn leadership skills, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Through service and activities within Club programs, youth learn to actively participate in our community.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. Keystone Club is the Boys & Girls Club’s most dynamic High School program. It affords teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience. Keystone members conduct activities in three areas: academic success, career exploration, and community service. Our KEYSTONE CLUB raises money for activities by holding fundraising events. The members then decide which projects and activities they wish to finance. Projects may focus on internal Club needs or worthy community initiatives.

BE ACADEMIC.

8

Page 9: Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis - Impact Guide

The academic success programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis play an increasingly important role in helping youth raise their grades and earn their high school diplomas. Our education programs help youth become more successful in school by offering education support and homework assistance, and by developing a love for lifetime learning.

TUTORING. Club members become more successful in school by receiving homework help and tutoring every day during POWER HOUR. This program encourages members to become self-directed learners, builds confidence, and teaches the importance of long-term dedication to academics. The program develops homework helpers and tutors, and tracks participant’s progress.

TECHNOLOGY. Our clubhouse has 35 computers available to youth in the Technology Center, which offers daily activities and programs designed to develop members’ skills in computer use. The primary goals of our TECH CENTER programs are to provide youth with access to technology, develop members’ technical skills, promote workforce readiness by increasing career options for young people, and support members’ academic performance.

LITERACY. Aimed at early elementary boys, Reading Dangerously targets topics boys are interested in to alleviate fears of reading and improve their literacy. With reading lessons on bugs and insects, mythology, and how to build airplanes, READING DANGEROUSLY encourages reading for more active boys and shows them that it is a gateway for adventure, creativity, and education.

Academic Success.

600 youth per day have safe, fun, and enriching after-school care. 9

100% GRADUATION. Our dropout prevention program is designed to help at-risk high school teens develop the requisite skills to graduate from high school with the readiness to enter college or other vocational institutions. By introducing club members to the concept of academic goal setting, GOALS FOR GRADUATION helps teens make connections between their aspirations for the future and positive actions they can take today.

FINANCIAL LITERACY. Teens build their money management skills with practical tips and activities in small groups mentored by volunteer business professionals. Managing financial matters is a key skill for teens to learn as they transition to adulthood. MONEY MATTERS teaches teens how to balance a checkbook, create a budget, save money, and invest for college and retirement.

PATH TO THE FUTURE. Through our career development programs, teens assess their skills and interests, explore careers, make sound educational decisions, and prepare for employment. Teens develop real jobs skills in the workplace at our student-operated COFFEE SHOP located in the Teen Center. Teens are able to learn in a safe environment and develop communication, customer service, teamwork, budgeting, inventory-management, time-management, and decision-making skills. Additionally they gain exposure to various career avenues by attending career days as well as job shadowing with local business partners.

Career Development.

Our programs help Club members set their long-term goals by helping them define post-secondary interests and career opportunities. Exposing youth to educational and career opportunities will help them to make choices about their future. These programs help build the connection between their aspirations for their future and concrete actions they can take now to prepare for real-world decisions.

BE SUCCESSFUL.YOUTH OF THE YEAR:Mariah Morales

Right after she was named the 2013 Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis Youth of the Year, Mariah Morales shared a long hug with her mother. The hug was only fitting. Minutes before, Corvallis High sophomore had credited her mother, a single parent, for inspiring her to work hard, value education and be a good role model to her younger sisters.

“My mom and the Club have helped me follow through on my ambitions” Mariah said. “They provided the push I needed.” Mariah was honored February 14th during the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis annual All Service Clubs Luncheon.

The Youth of the Year is the Club’s premier recognition program for members. Winners are recognized for their service to the Club, community, and family. They are also recognized for their academic success, strong moral character, and public speaking ability.

Mariah will receive a $3,000 Dr. Bob & Billie Holcomb Family Fund scholarship from the Benton County Foundation when she enrolls in college. Runner-up Cierra Self, a Corvallis High School junior received a $1,000 Mario & Alma Pastega Family Foundation scholarship. Jeny Marquez, a Corvallis High School senior was the third contestant and received a $500 scholarship provided by the Corvallis Elks Lodge. All three girls received Hewlett-Packard laptop computers.

Congratulations to Mariah, Cierra, and Jeny for taking on the challenge to prepare themselves to compete for the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis Youth of the Year!

BE HEALTHY.

HEALTHY CHOICES. Through positive mentorship, our prevention program educates adolescent girls about healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will help these young women develop to their full potential. The SMART GIRLS program is designed for middle and high school-aged girls and addresses: peer-to-peer interactions, physical and emotional growth, dating responsibility, sexual myths and truths, and alcohol, tobacco and other drug-use prevention.

HealthyLifestyles.

Knowing the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the effect it has socially and academically on children, the Boys & Girls Club has created programs that develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.

LIFE LONG HEALTHY HABITS. Knowing that children from food insecure households are more likely to be socially disruptive and that 74% of our Club members qualify for a free or reduced lunch at school, the Club serves 600 FREE MEALS daily and is committed to ensuring that our kids have the opportunity to receive the nourishment they need for healthy growth and development.

STRONG ROLE MODELS. Boys2Men concentrates on specific aspects of character through collaborative activities and mentorship during a member’s personal journey of maturation and growth. Service projects in the community and within the Club are among the activities that each member must complete. The main goal is to engage boys in discussions that reinforce strong character, morals, leadership, and positive behavior on their road from BOYS2MEN.

15

Page 16: Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis - Impact Guide

BE CREATIVE.

16

Page 17: Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis - Impact Guide

The Arts.

The challenges of discipline, reasoning, and problem-solving inherent in the arts are especially effective in building self-confidence and self-esteem in young people. The arts offer tremendous opportunities for building resiliency in youth. These rich and inexhaustible resources help young people learn and grow in healthy ways. Research indicates that young people who participate in arts and humanities programs are more likely to stay in school and avoid harmful behaviors.

CREATIVITY. Over 100 pieces of art are chosen from within our Club to be displayed at our annual FINE ARTS EXHIBIT. These pieces are selected by professionals with art backgrounds and are chosen to move on to a regional and National Fine Arts Competition. The creativity in making art helps build important developmental skills including decision-making, problem solving, cooperation, leadership, and communication.

ANALYSIS. Each week a different great master throughout history is introduced in a program titled MEET THE MASTERS. Participants learn about each master’s biographical background, their influence on art and society, as well as the analysis of their technique. Participants then create their own artwork in the style of the master. Programs like Meet the Masters incorporate additional skills such as literacy and critical thinking.

SELF CONFIDENCE. Self-expression, self-confidence, and leadership are encouraged through youth-created and directed programs. These programs allow youth to share their skills, knowledge, and passions with their peers. One such program, ’ARTOONING teaches illustration and participants create their own characters and story lines. The challenge is that the story can not include text – the entire story must be told through expressions and actions of the character!

66% of Clubhouse families served earn less than $35,000 a year. 17

Sports &Recreation.

The mission of the athletic program of the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis is to provide safe athletic opportunities for all youth with the chance to achieve their potential by instilling and promoting a sense of belonging, confidence, and self-worth. This mission is accomplished through promoting the ideals of healthy competition in a team and skills building environment.

VOLUNTEERSMake The Difference!Wherever volunteers serve, their extraordinarily generous contribution of time and service is vital to the success of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Corvallis. Some of our most influential role models are our Club volunteers, and some of our most effective community outreach and fundraising programs are led by volunteers.

You have the power to make a difference! At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Corvallis, our goals are ambitious, but we can achieve them because we have the support of caring people in the community. Last year, we received 26,000 hours of service from more than 1,000 volunteers who come from all areas of the community. High School students, college students, working professionals, and retired persons all volunteer at the Club.

Together, we can have a lasting impact on the lives of the young people who need us most. There are many great volunteer opportunities to serve young people. Learn more by calling our Volunteer Coordinator at (541) 757-1909.

STARS, our off-site after-school enrichment program for elementary age kids takes place at each Corvallis elementary school. STARS blends exercise and play time, homework support, and imaginative enrichment to fully engage children following their school day. STARS provides a more structured and supervised after-school experience.

KINDER CLUB is an afternoon kindergarten extension for children attending morning kindergarten at public schools. Kinder Club offers a structured environment where children participate in planned activities, including reading, math, science, arts, music, and physical education. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the academic and enrichment needs of the children in Kinder Club.

CLUB PLUS is for Club members in grades K-2. It offers more structure and a quiet environment in its own designated space for our youngest members. Kids participate in Healthy Habits (exercise and nutrition), Net Smartz (Internet safety), Power Hour (homework assistance), as well as Arts and Crafts. Club Plus is required for kindergartners.

We offer fee-based programming to address the needs of our youngest members at the Club. In addition, we offer after-school enrichment programming at all public elementary schools. These programs are delivered in designated classrooms with more individual attention and supervision.

3,000 children served in the Johnson Dental Clinic since 2008.

The Johnson Dental Clinic.

THE JOHNSON DENTAL CLINIC located inside the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis offers dental services to youth who otherwise do not have access to dental care. Dr. Ken Johnson had a dream to provide free dental care to uninsured children of Benton County. To make the dream a reality, Dr. Johnson partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis to create a dental clinic that provides dental services to those who do not have access.

Since February 2008, through grant funding and the support of the community, the Johnson Dental Clinic has served more than 3,000 kids and provided more than $3 million in dental services. Thank you Dr. Ken Johnson, Dot Johnson, and many other community dental professionals who have volunteered their time and expertise since our clinic opened!

BE INSPIRED.GRADUATION SUCCESS STORYAbraham Felix

Abraham Felix, a 2012 Crescent Valley High School graduate, was

a Club member for six years. At age sixteen, Abraham successfully

achieved “emancipated minor” status to allow him to stay in Corvallis

on his own after learning his mother had to return to Mexico for cancer

treatment. Abraham knew that a return to Mexico would derail his

goals for high school graduation and a career. The Club staff supported

Abraham during and after his emancipation to build skills to live

independently.

As a Club kid, Abraham stated, “Actions speak louder than words. Time

and again the Boys & Girls Club has proven their support.” Now it is Abraham who is giving back. Today at

nineteen, Abraham is working towards a career in youth development. He is currently a staff member at the Club

providing mentoring to help kids explore their passions and pursue their dreams. Abraham attributes his own

desire and passion for youth development to his time spent at the Club.

40% of our Club kids live in a single-parent household.22
