Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world. “Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us to deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014. On December 11, 2014, the 193 members of UNGA approved the proposal by consensus with a record 177 co-sponsoring countries a resolution to establish 21st June as “International Day of Yoga”. In its resolution, the UNGA recognised that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well- being and wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practicing Yoga for the health of the world population. The boy, who was found by the police wandering alone

in Manama souq last week, is an orphan and was abandoned by his guardian, it is learnt.

The guardian of the boy, who has been taking care of the child since the death of his parents, abandoned him as she was not able to accommodate the child after getting into a relationship with a man.

“She said that her plan was to leave the child at a police station and asked her friend to do so. However, the friend did not go to the police station to drop the child, instead, he dropped him next to a police patrol jeep in the Souq,” Capital Directorate Investigation Division

Head, Major Muhammed Al Buainain told DT News, adding that she took help of her friend to abandon him.

According to Al Buainain, the guardian was an Indonesian lady and police suspect that the child’s father is a Bangladeshi man and his mother, an Indonesian lady. “We have some information to lead us to believe that the boy’s father is a Bangladeshi and the mother is Indonesian, however, this has not been confirmed,” he said.

A statement from public prosecution revealed that the boy’s guardian visited the police station to confess.

“An Asian lady confessed that she had abandoned the child. She had been taking

care of the boy since the death of his parents. The lady’s partner persuaded her to abandon the child and so she respected his wish,” Family and Child Prosecution Head Amina Isa said in a statement.

The boy was found wandering in Manama souq last Wednesday night.

Ministry of Interior had launched an investigation on

the same night. Labour Market Regulatory

Authority (LMRA) had also tried to help the search announcing on Friday that “no legal action will be taken against the parents” in case they were illegal residents.

Al Buainain said that police are still continuing investigations to find the identity of the parents.

The High Criminal Court yesterday sentenced three

persons to three years behind bars for attempting to detonate a gas cylinder in Diraz village.

The incident reportedly happened on December 19 last year, when the men agreed to attack police officers stationed in the village before they tried

to set off the cylinder. According to court files,

they used fire extinguishers to shoot glass balls at police officers. They fled the scene after cops intervened, and headed to the home of the second. They took his father’s vehicle and went to an abandoned house, from where they took the gas cylinder and placed it inside

a waste container along with a tyre in a public park in the village.

They poured petrol in the container and set it alight in a bid to blow up the cylinder. However, police officers made a timely intervention to hinder their plot. The trio was caught following intensified investigations into the incident.

The High Criminal Appeals Court has rejected the

appeal of a Bahraini man accused of planting a fake bomb. He was earlier slapped with five years behind bars jail term. The accused was assisted

by other men to commit his crime, but their identity remained unknown.

The culprits reportedly put the device at around 7:30 am on a public road in A’ali village two years ago. They burned tyres beside it before they fled. Police officers who arrived at

the scene thought the device was a real bomb. But experts examined it later and declared it was only a fake bomb. Thereafter, investigations into the case were launched, as a result of which the involvement of the accused was was pinpointed.

A p a r l i a m e n t a r i a n yesterday demanded

the Government to execute capital punishment against the terrorists who planted the bomb near Diraz on Sunday, killing a policeman and injuring two others.

Second Deputy Speaker Abdulhalim Murad called for Qisas against them without any hesitation. Qisas is to take the

life of the killers, in accordance with Islamic Sharia Laws.

Murad, who’s also the

Head of Al Asalah Islamic Society, strongly condemned the terror blast which resulted in the death of a policeman Abdulsamad Haji, 31.

The MP offered his sincere condolences to the family of the policeman and the people of Bahrain. He expressed his appreciation of the services and sacrifices of security forces to ensure public security, and also insisted on the necessity to show no mercy in eradicating terrorism and apply the law.

A Bahraini man who was found dead in a farm

located in Al Hajar village in the Northern Governorate on Monday is believed to have died while planting a bomb.

Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science had revealed that the death was a result of a bomb blast, without giving more details of the incident. Sources told DT News that the man was identified as Nabeel Abdullah Ahmed Al Sameeh, 40 and that he was on his way to plant the bomb he possessed.

“The bomb was given to him by one of his relatives and while he was crossing the Al Hajar Village, the bomb blasted in his hand leading to his death. An investigation has been launched by the concerned authorities on the death as some of his relatives have been previously been investigated on similar incidents like these,” sources informed.

Following the incident,

Interior Ministry further issued a statement saying, “The Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science has said that an initial investigation into the body found in a Hajar village farm on June 19 showed the death was the result of a bomb blast. Investigations are continued to obtain more details about the case for the necessary security and legal steps. The Public Prosecutor had been informed.”

This is not that the first

time that a Bahraini dies while planting, manufacturing or transporting explosives.

In July 2015, an 18-year-old was announced dead on the spot when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) he was planting near East Eker exploded in his face.

In 2014, a homemade bomb exploded in Muqsha village in the Northern Governorate, while three teenagers were transporting it to another location, in order to use it against security forces. Three of them were killed in the incident.

On April 1, 2014, the body of Hussain Sharaf, 20, was found burnt in West Eker in the Capital Governorate. Investigations showed that he died while assembling a bomb that he was planning to use against police.

One year before that, Hassan Abdulkarim, 35, was burnt to death in Sar village in the Northern Governorate, while in the process of manufacturing a homemade explosive.of them were killed in the incident.

Tourists visiting Manama souq are left high and dry as

there are no guides to navigate them through the maze and improve their experience in one of the oldest tourism venues in the Kingdom.

At least six tour guides must be recruited to be assigned at the Manama Souq to increase the attractiveness of the traditional market to tourists.

The Manama souq currently does not have tour guides and so the tourists are not always able to navigate easily, a Souq official, who asked not to be named, told DT News.

The Souq being one of the prime tourist attractions of Bahrain, needs more attention from the authorities, he said.

“Tour guides are necessary because of the size and complexity of the Souq. Some of the tourists are totally lost after coming to the Souq. They do not know what to expect or where to go. Often they miss some of the attractions at the Souq. They are our guests

and we should be giving them better guidance,” he said, “Tourists bring a lot of revenue to the Souq and we should be more efficient and do our best to encourage them to come here,” he said.

“There are development taking place. Old Markets Committee of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Tamkeen and other relevant Ministries and authorities are working hard on the revamp of the Souq. However, there are some areas that need immediate attention such as the need for tour guides. I hope it will be addressed as

soon as possible,” he said.

Meeting heldThe Old Markets Committee

of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry headed by first vice-chairman Khalid Al Zayani recently convened a meeting with top officials from Tamkeen to discuss plans to revamp Manama and Muharraq souqs. The committee proposed including it in the old markets in Shop Bahrain Festival and making Manama market a center for traditional crafts. The meeting also stressed on the importance of providing fire extinguishers in the old markets.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President

and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of Dubai, with the attendance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Chairman of the Executive Council, and His Highness Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, launched the “Dubai Cyber Security Strategy” that aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a world leader in innovation, safety and security. The strategy focuses on the following domains:

• Cyber smart society• Innovation• Cyber Security • Cyber Resilience• National and International collaborationThe strategy is a great advancement from

the earlier strategies, as it focuses heavily on the security and connectivity of smart cities with connected system and services. It also focuses on the upcoming cyber security challenges for the next decade.

This strategy gives more importance on moving towards a cyber-centred society which is technology-savvy with clear responsibilities towards cyber hygiene. This includes the government and private entities implementing secured services, consumers accessing the services in a secured manner and also the government’s monitoring activities to ensure that the security of the services is always guaranteed.

The strategy also established based on moving towards innovation, which encourages the organisations and entrepreneurs to think out of the box and create better secured services and solution with improvements in quality and reach.

As per the new framework, public-private partnership is the way to go when preparing a country level cyber strategy as both play equal and important roles for the same. The role

for the government is to create and enforce the necessary laws, policy and infrastructure to ensure a fair and just environment for the private sector to introduce new services which secure the cyber assets and interests of the country. The country should be focusing more on the next generation challenges related to cyber and information security laws, data transfer and data encryptions’ regulations. Also awareness campaigns for the general public will be helpful.

Furthermore, the role UAE CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) should also be increased to move from a country wide to a regional role. Private organizations should also be part of the interaction to ensure that the laws and regulations are investor and technology friendly and encourage secure environments.

Although the data privacy laws are meant to protect the individuals, they have profound implications of how to enforce them and ensure compliance. When they are formulated and created, the way to implement them must be considered in order to facilitate and ensure compliance. This includes creating awareness campaigns among different user groups and provide them with incentives to move towards the new regulations before making the regulation a mandate. The mitigation of upcoming and potential risks should be added to the data privacy laws. Also the laws can be updated to encourage a more open data security environment where companies should be mandated to disclose (controlled/limited) details about any cyber security breach in a given time so that the same can be made available for the other organisations, giving them a chance to be secured against similar threats.

GDPR is also having a great influence on how the companies do their business globally. The same is being witnessed in Dubai where the organisations are changing their policies and processes to incorporate the stringent requirements related to GDPR.

Cairo

An Egyptian court yesterday ruled that previous judicial

decisions in favour of transferring two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia were invalid, a judicial official and a lawyer said.

Egyptian courts have issued contradictory rulings since Cairo signed a controversial deal with Saudi Arabia in April 2016 to transfer the islands to Riyadh.

The government says the two islands, Tiran and Sanafir, belong to Saudi Arabia but had been leased to Egypt in the 1950s.

Parliament on June 14 approved their controversial transfer.

On Tuesday an administrative court ruled that all judicial decisions taken to date by the urgent matters court would be considered invalid.

In April, the urgent matters court in Cairo invalidated a verdict by Egypt’s highest administrative court that went against the islands’ transfer.

“The ruling (on Tuesday) signifies that the land is Egyptian,” said Khaled Ali, a lawyer who argued in the administrative

court that the islands belonged to Egypt.

The verdict would affirm that any attempt to transfer the islands would be considered unconstitutional “even if the president ratified the agreement”, Ali said.

“Now the ball is in the president’s court,” Ali said.

The president has yet to ratify the transfer deal.

Lying at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, the islands can be used to

control access to the Israeli port of Eilat.

They were captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war before being returned to Egypt under the 1979 Camp David Accords. (AFP)

Cholera has killed 1,170 people in war-ravaged Yemen and the number of suspected cases is now

at nearly 2,000 a day, the World Health Organization said yesterday.

And the devastation wrought by the conflict there made coping with the outbreak that much more difficult, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva.

“The number of suspected cholera cases is rising,” said Jasarevic.

“We are talking close to 2,000 suspected cases per day,” he warned, which meant that Yemen was now suffering the world’s largest cholera outbreak.

Since WHO began collecting data on the outbreak on April 27, it has registered more than 170,000 suspected cholera cases across 20 of Yemen’s 21 governorates, Jasarevic said.

WHO has warned that a quarter of a million people could fall sick with the disease cholera by the end of the year there. Already, two-thirds of the population are on the brink of famine there.

Cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection spread through contaminated food or water. The disease is easily treatable, but reining it in conflict-torn Yemen is particularly difficult. (AFP)

Dozens of F-35 stealth fighters that were grounded for 11 days due to

an oxygen-supply problem aboard the expensive warplanes will resume flying today, the US Air Force said.

Investigators were unable to identify a root cause of the issue, which had prompted the 56th Fighter Wing of Luke Air Force Base, Arizona to ground its F-35s.

“However, specific concerns were

eliminated as possible causes including maintenance and aircrew flight equipment procedures,” base spokeswoman Major Rebecca Heyse said in a statement.

The Lockheed Martin planes were grounded on June 9 due to five incidents since May 2 in which pilots experienced symptoms of hypoxia, of lack of oxygen.

Currently, the 56th Fighter Wing has 55 F-35A planes that are used to train pilots from the US and other air forces that are buying the jet. Heyse said experts

are continuing to probe the issue and several precautionary steps are being taken, including increasing the minimum levels for backup oxygen systems for each flight.

With a current development and acquisition price tag already at $379 billion for a total of 2,443 F-35 aircraft -- most destined for the US Air Force -- the F-35 is the most expensive plane in history, and costs are set to rise further still.

China’s C919 and Russia’s MC-21 may be absent from the tarmac at

the Paris Air Show, but their makers don’t hide their ambition to nose into the biggest part of the civil aviation market -- single-aisle medium-haul aircraft -- which is dominated by Airbus and Boeing.

“For decades there were just two families of competing aircraft in the single-aisle segment, the A320 and the 737” built by Airbus and Boeing, said Stephane Albernhe, managing partner at Archery Consulting.

Both firms have been announcing business worth tens of billions of dollars for their mid-range bestsellers at the Paris Air Show, but they’re unlikely to keep the market for themselves for long.

“Things are beginning to change because the duopoly is being attacked by the Bombardier’s C Series, Comac’s C919 and Irkut’s MC-21.

While Bombardier’s C Series entered into commercial service last year, both the C919 and MC-21 only just made their maiden test flights last month and are years away from entering into service.

The C919, which made its first test flight on May 5, built by state-owned aerospace m a n u f a c t u r e r C o m m e r c i a l A i r c r a f t Corporation of China (COMAC),  represents nearly a decade of effort in a

government-mandated drive to reduce the nation’s dependence on Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

Capable of carrying 168 passengers over a distance of 5,500 kilometres (3,400 miles), the C919 already has 600 orders.

The MC-21 also represents an effort by Russia to end reliance on foreign aircraft. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian airlines have shifted to Airbus and Boeing aircraft which are cheaper to operate.

Manufactured by the state-owned Irkut, the aircraft made its first flight on May 28 over Siberia. Capable of carrying between 132 and 211 passengers up to 6,000 kilometres, there have been 175 orders for the MC-21 according to Irkut.

The MC-21’s maiden flight comes six years after Russia’s short-haul Sukhoi Superjet aircraft came into service in 2011. But they have since

suffered serious t e c h n i c a l

have forced the plane’s grounding.

For Gilles Fournier, managing director of the Paris Air Show, “these planes are not yet mature enough to display” at the  event. But, he added, “I think they will be in two years” at the next Paris Air Show.

“These new entrants have states which support them and they won’t stop there,” said Albernhe.

“They have started with single-aisle aircraft, but its a good wager that at least as far as the Chinese are concerned, the next model with be a long-haul aircraft.”

In fact, Beijing and Moscow announced last month they intend to work together this time a long-distance aircraft, which has been baptised C-929 by the Chinese.

Capable of carrying 280 passengers on flights up to 12,000 kilometres, the C-929 would take on the latest long-haul jets offered by Airbus and Boeing -- the A350 and 787 Dreamliner.

The plane is to be developed by COMAC and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).  Chinese media have said development could cost between $13 billion and $20 billion.

He said BRICS cooperation has greater importance, as the five countries’ share in global economy has increased from 12 per cent to 23pc in the past decade while they have contributed more than

half of global growth. This year marks the beginning of the second decade of BRICS cooperation, and China holds the BRICS rotating presidency, Wang said, adding that the country stands ready to work with all sides to contribute to worldwide stability and prosperity, as well as the healthy development of multilateralism.

On the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the ministers underscored the importance of its full implementation within the framework of revitalized global partnership for sustainable development.

The ministers also welcomed the entry into force of the Paris Agreement on climate change on 4 November 2016 and urged

all countries to implement the Paris Agreement under the principles of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change including the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.

On terrorism, they deplored the continued terrorist attacks, including those in some BRICS countries, and condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations wherever committed and by whomsoever.

The ministers looked forward to their meeting on the margins of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and welcomed South Africa’s offer to host the next stand-alone meeting in 2018. (Xinhua)

(Xinhua)

Gulf stock markets were weighed down by weak

oil prices yesterday as Saudi Arabia pulled back despite hopes for positive news from index compiler MSCI, while Qatar closed at its lowest level since it was hit by a diplomatic crisis early this month.

MSCI was due after the close yesterday to announce whether it will launch a review of Saudi Arabia for possible inclusion in its emerging market index; inclusion would bring tens of billions of dollars of fresh foreign money.

The Saudi index surged 2.4 per cent on Monday after Mohammed El-Kuwaiz, vice chairman of the Capital Market Authority, was quoted as saying by the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that he expected inclusion by the end of 2018.

Yesterday, the index rose as much as 0.6pc early on but closed 1.3pc lower in thin trade. The three top losers

were banks, which had surged in the past week because of a belief that foreign funds would flow into them in the event of a positive MSCI decision.

Saudi British Bank, for example, pulled back 4.7pc to 24.30 riyals after jumping 14pc in the past four days.

Petrochemical blue chip Saudi Basic Industries, which would be a key Saudi component of MSCI’s emerging market index if the upgrade happens, fell 0.8pc.

Dubai’s index fell 0.2pc as builder Drake & Scull, the most heavily traded stock, slid 3.0pc after saying it had obtained regulatory approval to start a capital restructuring after heavy losses.

Abu Dhabi’s index dropped 0.8pc as Dana Gas pulled back 4.4pc. It had gained 66pc this month on what some brokers said was buying by a strategic investor; late on Monday Goldilocks Investment Co, part of Abu Dhabi Financial

Group, said it had bought 5pc of the firm.

Qatar’s index slipped 1.5pc to 8,934 points, its lowest finish since January 2016. It remains depressed by economic sanctions and has now lost 10pc since then.

Many banks dropped; Doha Bank fell 2.1pc. Qatari banks have been weak because

of concern about increases in their funding costs after other Gulf countries imposed sanctions on Qatar early this month, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

Egypt’s index fell 0.7pc; Orascom Telecom Media, the most heavily traded stock, plunged 15pc as it went ex-dividend. (Reuters)

Philippine Airlines orders seven planes

Saudi pulls back, Qatar hits postcrisis low

Manila

Philippine Airlines will buy seven planes from Canada’s

Bombardier as part of an effort to regain its dominance of the growing air travel market, the carrier said yesterday.

PAL said it sealed the deal for seven Q400 turboprops, worth $235 million at list prices, at the Paris Air Show.

The carrier aims to increase its fleet serving smaller islands in the archipelagic nation.

“We used to be the only carrier in the Philippines. We used to be the dominant domestic player,” a statement quoted PAL president Jaime Bautista as saying in Paris.

However the rise of budget airlines starting in the late

1990s eroded PAL’s market share. Upstart Cebu Pacific eventually overtook it to

become the Philippines’ largest carrier.

“The management of

Philippine Airlines believes we should get back the market share we used to own,” Bautista said.

The new  86-seat Q400s and other types of  narrow-bodied aircraft would enable PAL to do that, he added.

The acquisition of the seven Q400s would be on top of five Q400 planes worth $168 million which PAL ordered last December but which have not yet been delivered.

PAL, which has a fleet of 81 planes, already operates five Q400s and four smaller Q300 aircraft from Bombardier. These service airports that cannot handle wide-bodied planes.

International Day of Yoga, or commonly referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on 21 June since its inception in 2015. An international day

for yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental, and/or spiritual practice attributed mostly to India.

Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense

of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature.

In its resolution, the UNGA recognised that Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and wider dissemination of

information about the benefits of practicing Yoga for the health of the world population. Yoga also brings harmony in all walks of life and thus, is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle-related disorders.

This booklet intends to give a brief overview about Yoga and Yogic practices

to orient one towards comprehensive health for an individual and the community.

Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science for healthy living. The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning “to join”, “to yoke” or “to unite”. According to Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to the union

of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. According to modern scientists, everything in the universe is just a manifestation of the same quantum firmament. One who experiences this oneness of existence is said to be “in Yoga” and is termed as a yogi who has attained a state of freedom, referred to as mukti, nirvāna, kaivalya or moksha.

“Yoga” also refers to an inner science comprising of a variety of methods through which human beings

can achieve union between the body and mind to attain self-realisation. The aim of Yoga practice (sādhana) is to overcome all kinds of sufferings that lead to a sense of freedom in every walk of life with holistic health, happiness and harmony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will celebrate International Yoga Day 2017 in a yoga session at Ramabai Rally Ground in Lucknow today morning. The UN International Day of Yoga is celebrated every year on June 21. Several countries have already started celebrations with Yoga Day events from last week itself. The event in Lucknow is set to be one of the biggest yoga events in the country.

“Yoga is the Journeyof the Self,to the Self,

Through the Self.”

On the occasion of International Day of Yoga-2017, I extend my warm greetings to all yoga enthusiasts in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the readers of this publication.

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ meaning to join, ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite.’ The practice of yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. Yoga, an ancient Indian knowledge, embodies unity of mind and body; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Yoga goes beyond being a set of physical existence to a balanced mind, healthy body, and noble thoughts. Yoga connects us to our inner self.

The United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014 adopted an India-led resolution declaring June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’. The resolution had 177 nations joining as co-sponsors, the highest number ever for any resolution in the UN General Assembly. The resolution was adopted by an acclamation, a testimony to the enthusiastic cross-cultural and universal appeal that Yoga enjoys amongst members of the United Nations.

The movement towards wellness and practicing Yoga is gaining momentum. Over the past two years, people from across the globe have enthusiastically joined in celebrating the International Day of Yoga.

In an increasingly stressful life, Yoga provides the positive energy that keeps tensions away and gives us strength to perform our duties. The practice of Yoga facilitates mind and body coordination, emotional equanimity and intellectual clarity to the practitioners. Yoga also brings harmony in all walks of life and thus is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many life style related disorders.

Let us observe the International Day of Yoga in a befitting manner and make a positive and qualitative difference in our lives.

Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s former business managers have made public

the emails from him in their latest court filing, which reveal that he was willing to sell off some of his belongings to help ease the financial situation.

Depp’s ex-business managers are fighting to subpoena his long time representative as part of the ongoing dispute overwhether the actor knew the dire state of his finances or was kept in the dark.

Among the 109-page document are emails from TMG to various

members of Depp’s team, including an exchange in 2009 between TMG’s Joel Mandel and Depp himself. Mandel urged Depp to “take it easy” on his spending over the Christmas and wanted to set up a meeting where they could discuss about balancing his finances. (TOI)

Actress Kate Winslet says that working in her forthcoming movie “The Mountain

Between Us” was harder than working for her career-making role in “Titanic”.

“This was much harder than Titanic because we really were at 10,000 feet and it really was -38 degrees Celsius. I definitely had ‘Titanic’ flashbacks, freezing cold, falling into that cold water,” said Winslet.

“It was definitely reminiscent of certain other rather challenging, strenuous experiences I had 20 years ago,” she added

When asked whether she and her friend Leonardo (DiCaprio) will come together for any project any time soon, Winslet said no, reports eonline.com. (IANS)

Words may not be the best way to communicate things today. Body language, touch, and taste will be much more effective. You will find that your senses are heightened. Let your feet follow your nose and go enjoy a good meal with someone special tonight.

Things may get quite intense today. There will be a great deal of information coming your way, but it might not all be that good. It seems that someone is putting a roadblock in your path, making it difficult for you to pass. Don’t let this stop you. Use your creativity to find ways around any obstacles. Experiences like these only make you stronger.

Your head may buzz with activity today. Suddenly it seems like the spotlight has been turned on. You’re on stage and your brainpower is being tested. Are you up to the challenge? Ready or not, it’s here. Remember the importance of individuality. Don’t be another cookie-cutter replica. Be your own person and think for yourself.

Focus on the simple pleasures today. Don’t feel like you have to go to distant lands or engage in expensive recreational activities to find happiness and peace. Realize that everything you need is inside. Delight in nature. Smile at the Sun, Moon, and stars. Realize that there is beauty all around and not just in expensive objects you can buy.

Focus on your creative mind today. This is a fertile time to plant seeds that will surely grow up healthy and strong. You have the ability to be prosperous now, but it won’t come easily. The key for you now is to stay cool. Don’t overreact to the little annoyances that come your way. You’re beyond petty squabbles. Don’t waste your time with them.

Motivation must come from within today. The only thing that can pull you out of bed is your inner drive. Too much partying may leave you spent to the point where you don’t want to move. Remember to keep things in moderation. Be good to your body. Get outside and let your mind radiate outward like sunshine. Feel the grounding of the Earth beneath your feet.

Your mind should be clear today and communications should go extremely well for you. Very few words will be needed to get your point across. You will connect to people on many levels. Realize that you have important information to share with those around you. Your critical, practical, grounded opinion plays a key role in the activities of the day.

Strong forces may act up today and ask you to stand up a little straighter than usual. Keep your shoulders back and be proud. Don’t think any less of yourself just because there is disagreement between you and others. Maintain respect for your opinions. Say things with confidence and don’t back down, but be prepared to defend your views.

You might find that your brain is moving in the slow lane today. It may even be creeping over to the breakdown lane. You might find that it’s a bit harder to make your witty rebuttals in conversation. Take your time and make sure you choose your words carefully. Communicating with others might be a bit like pulling teeth.

Feel free to take the lazy route today. Don’t lift a finger if you don’t have to. It may be hard to get others moving, too. You can prod all you want, but if people don’t want to go, they aren’t going to go. Your flexible nature might be tested. You may find that you need to adapt to the whims of others rather than the other way around.

Your thinking is steady and reserved today. Your mind is right in line with your ego, and you will be able to accurately verbalize what is going on inside. You might be a bit reserved in how much you tell people. It could be that others are holding back information from you. Proceed with caution and be honest in all your dealings.

Today is an excellent day to say exactly how you feel. Your thinking is sharp and clear. Once you start talking, you may never stop. People will listen extra carefully to your words. You have a great deal of influence, so realize how much impact you have on the environment. You will be able to accomplish a lot.

An Indian girl who made international headlines when a rare condition caused her head to swell to more than twice the normal size has died, days before she was to undergo corrective surgery.

Bamako

Thirty-one people were killed over the weekend

in central Mali as ethnic groups clashed over land in a zone where the state is near-absent and jihadists roam freely.

Nomadic Fulani people and farmers from the Dogon ethnic group have engaged in tit-for-tat violence sparked by Fulanis grazing their cattle on Dogon land.

Dogons also accuse Fulanis in the area of colluding with

cleric Amadou Koufa, whose Islamist group recently joined the Group to Support Islam and Muslims, a jihadist alliance with links to al-Qaeda.

The Malian army confirmed “31 dead, (comprising) 27 Fulanis and four Dogons,” along with nine more injured.

The army said it had spoken with mayors, village chiefs and imams to persuade them to halt the violence in Mopti region.

Singapore

A Muslim border security officer in Singapore has

been arrested for planning to fight in Syria, officials said yesterday.

Muhammad Khairul bin Mohamed, 24, an unarmed traffic officer working at the crossing with Malaysia, was arrested under the Internal Security Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.

The act allows for detention without trial for up to two years.

“Through prolonged exposure to online materials on the Syrian conflict, Khairul perceived the Syrian conflict to be a ‘holy war’ in which he was prepared to die in battle as a ‘martyr’,” the statement said.

“He developed the view that the conflict in Syria was a sectarian struggle between Sunni Islam and Shia Islam, and being a Sunni Muslim, he wanted to fight against the Shi’ites in Syria by joining the Free Syrian Army (FSA),” the statement said.

I am very, very, very sorry that (the military offensive left Marawi in ruins), I hope that soon you will find it in your heart to forgive my sol-diers and government and even me.”

A man arrested outside Britain’s parliament was to appear in court charged with possess-ing an offensive weapon and assaulting a police officer.

Tokyo

Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji fish market -- the

world’s biggest -- will be moved to a new location, the city’s top official confirmed yesterday, after months of delays over concerns about toxic contamination at the new site.

But city governor Yuriko Koike added a new element to the long-standing relocation plan, saying the current site would eventually be redeveloped to capitalise on Tsukiji’s globally recognised brand.

The present location, a popular tourist attraction

that hosts an early-morning tuna auction, is earmarked for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“After that, we will turn it into a new market with a food theme park,” Koike told reporters, adding that redevelopment would happen within five years.

“I think it’s wisest to use both Toyosu and Tsukiji,” she said, referring to the new location.

The government initially planned to sell all or part of the current site near the upscale Ginza shopping district.

The Hague

Amid scorching summer heat, most final-year

Dutch university students are already partying on the beach. But one group will have to redo a key exam after their teacher disappeared leaving no trace of their grades.

“We’ve done everything we can to try to find him, and to get hold of the test papers, but he went missing several weeks ago,” Aris Willems, spokesman for the ROC Midden Nederland university in Utrecht, said yesterday.

A delegation from the university even went to the home of the Dutch language professor, but his doorbell went unanswered.

Willems acknowledged he had never come across anything like it, but after discussions with the schools inspector it had been decided that the 80 students following a cookery course would have to re-sit a

Dutch-language oral exam.Since they first sat the test

back in March and April, the students have already been told their grade and have been celebrating passing their final diploma.

Paris attacker had gun licenceParis

Questions arose yesterday over how a known

radical Islamist who rammed a car into a police van on Paris’s Champs-Elysees was able to hold a gun licence.

Adam Djaziri, a 31-year-old who had been on a watchlist for radical Islamists since 2015, was killed on Monday as his car loaded with a gas canister smashed into the van on the French capital’s most famous avenue.

Two handguns and a Kalashnikov-style assault rifle were found in the car, while a weapons stash was found at the home of the assailant, who died in the incident.

Djaziri’s father, who has since been detained, said that his son was a licensed gun-owner, and a source close to the probe said he owned nine weapons including pistols and an assault rifle.

The attempted attack comes with France still under a state of emergency after a wave of jihadist assaults that have left more than 230 people dead since 2015.

As the one-month-old government of President Emmanuel Macron prepares to unveil a tougher new anti-terrorism law, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe expressed dismay that Djaziri was able to have a gun permit despite

is that the first weapons permit was given before this individual was flagged up,” he said in an interview with BFM television and RMC radio, but he added that “no one can be satisfied -- and certainly not me” that Djaziri had evidently still been able to possess dangerous weapons.

Djaziri’s ex-wife, brother and sister-in-law were detained late on Monday after police questioned them at the family home in Plessis-Pate outside Paris. Djaziri’s father was also taken into custody, a judicial source said. (AFP)

Otto Warmbier, the US student released by

North Korea in a coma last week after more than a year in detention, has died, his family said Monday.

The 22-year-old, who had suffered severe brain damage, was medically evacuated to the United States on June 13. He died Monday at 2:20 pm (1820 GMT), surrounded by relatives in his home town of Cincinnati, Ohio.

“It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home,” his family said in a statement.

“The awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible,” they added.

Pyongyang said that Warmbier fell into a coma soon after he was sentenced in March of last year for stealing a political poster from a North Korean hotel. The regime claimed the young man fell into a coma after contracting botulism and being given a sleeping pill.

Doctors treating Warmbier said he had suffered extensive tissue loss

in all regions of his brain, but showed no signs of physical trauma. Medical tests offered no conclusive evidence as to the cause of his neurological injuries, and no evidence of a prior botulism infection.

They said Warmbier’s severe brain injury was most likely -- given his young age -- to have been caused by cardiopulmonary arrest cutting the blood supply to the brain.

Warmbier’s father, Fred, lashed out at Kim Jong-Un’s

authoritarian state last week, telling a news conference, “there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret and denied him top-notch medical care for so long.”

In their statement Monday, Otto’s family said they believed he had found a peace of sorts after being flown home.

“When Otto returned to Cincinnati late on June 13th he was unable to speak, unable to see and unable to

react to verbal commands. He looked very uncomfortable -- almost anguished,” they said.

“Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed – he was at peace. He was home and we believe he could sense that,” they added.

“We thank everyone around the world who has kept him and our family in their thoughts and prayers. We are at peace and at home too.”

US teen killed by bear in Alaska running race

Assange abandons ‘special announcement’ at embassy

Los Angeles

A 16-year-old boy was mauled and killed by a bear

during a running race in Alaska at the weekend, managing to text his family as the attack was under way, authorities said Monday.

Patrick Cooper, of Anchorage, was competing in the annual mountain race on Sunday that goes through rugged terrain when he apparently encountered the bear.

He reportedly texted a member of his family to say he was being chased by the animal.

“The mother was here with

her family, her children, they were running the race,” Nathan Michell, of the Anchorage police department, told reporters.

The race director said the boy had raced up a mountain and was on his way down extremely steep terrain that goes through thick wilderness when the attack took place.

Several fellow runners and rescuers rushed to the site but initially couldn’t get close as the animal was still in the area.

“The bear was remaining in the area where the young man was,” Tom Crockett, a park ranger with Chugach State Park, told local media.

London

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Monday

abandoned plans to make a “special announcement” five years after moving into London’s Ecuadorian embassy, claiming he had a meeting set with UK officials.

“On the advice of Mr. Assange’s legal counsel, today’s planned announcement by Mr. Assange from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy has been deferred.”

“This follows the agreement of an imminent meeting with British authorities,” WikiLeaks said in a statement.

Assange’s planned appearance at the embassy balcony was due to mark five years since he took refuge in the Ecuadorian territory within London, in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden where he faced allegations of rape.

Sweden dropped its investigation into Assange last month, deciding it was no longer proportional to keep the probe open while there was little chance of the 45-year-old surrendering

himself to the authorities.Assange declared “victory”

following the announcement, although he declined to say whether he would step out onto British soil where he could be arrested for earlier skipping bail.

On Monday, WikiLeaks said Assange’s legal team “remain optimistic” of finding a solution “which respects the British legal process and restores Mr. Assange’s freedom and dignity”.

The British government denied it had any plans to meet with Assange, despite the claim made by WikiLeaks.

“There are no upcoming meetings scheduled between the Home Office and Julian Assange’s legal team,” a home office spokesman said.

Assange said he opted to move into the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid being extradited to the US where he fears prosecution over WikiLeaks publishing leaked government documents.

US justice authorities have never confirmed that they have Assange under investigation or are seeking his extradition.

NASA discovers 10 new Earth-size exoplanetsWashington

NASA revealed Monday 10 new rocky, Earth-sized

planets that could potentially have liquid water and support life.

The Kepler mission team released a survey of 219 potential exoplanets -- planets outside of our solar system -- that had been detected by the space observatory launched in 2009 to scan the Milky Way galaxy.

Ten of the new discoveries were orbiting their suns at a distance similar to Earth’s orbit around the sun, the so-called habitable zone that could potentially have liquid water

and sustain life.Kepler has already

discovered 4,034 potential exoplanets, 2,335 of which have been confirmed by other telescopes as actual planets.

The 10 new Earth-size planets bring the total to 50 that exist in habitable zones around the galaxy.

“This carefully-measured catalog is the foundation for directly answering one of astronomy’s most compelling questions -- how many planets like our Earth are in the galaxy?” said Susan Thompson, a Kepler research scientist and lead author of the

latest study.The latest findings were

released at the Fourth Kepler and K2 science conference being held this week at NASA’s Ames research center in California.

The Kepler telescope detects the presence of planets by registering minuscule drops in a star’s brightness that occurs when a planet crosses in front of it, a movement known as a transit.

The findings were compiled from data gathered during the first four years of the mission, which scientists processed to determine the size and composition of the planets

observed.The scientists found that

the newly discovered planets tended to fall into two distinct categories -- smaller, rocky planets that are usually around 75 percent bigger than Earth, and much larger, gaseous planets similar in size to Neptune.

NASA said the latest catalog is the most complete and detailed survey of potential exoplanets yet compiled.

The telescope has studied some 150,000 stars in the Cygnus constellation, a survey which NASA said is now complete.

Many of the Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling

Team members are set to participate in National Road Championship races in Italy, Spain and Slovenia taking place during this week.

The Italian riders – except for Franco Pellizotti, who is recovering from tendinitis, that forced him to abandon the Critérium of Dauphiné – will be at the Italian National Road Race Championships, that will be held in Piedmont Region this Sunday.

This race is called “Gran Piemonte” and will cover a distance of 236km from Asti to Ivrea. “The course is very long” explains Sports Director Paolo Slongo. “After an undulating start, there will be a climb at 5% average (with max. gradient of 11%), a fast descent and then some short hills before the final circuit of

21.3 km (four laps) where the 2km climb with a gradient over 10% and peaks of 15% will for sure be very challenging. Both Visconti and Colbrelli are in very good form and showed it in Slovenia. They can do well at the Italian Championship and Vincenzo Nibali will come back to race after a period of rest following the Giro d’Italia, to prepare the second part of the season”.

Only Manuele Boaro will ride the Individual Time Trial too, which will take place

in Piedmont as well (Ciriè-Caluso 38,3 km).

In Spain the focus will be on the Individual Time Trial (Soria-Soria 43,1 km), with the defending champion Ion Izagirre, who will try to take the best time again. “He will aim to retain the Spanish title” says SD Mario Chiesa “At the Tour de Suisse Ion did well and felt good. So we are confident.” Then Izagirre will line up in the Road Race (Garray-Soria 207.3km), together with Ivan Cortina, Javier Moreno and

Ion Ander Insausti (who will ride the TT too). “We have just four riders, so it won’t be easy against teams with more athletes, but we will do our best” adds Chiesa. “The race will be hard in particular in the final part with the six laps of a circuit that features a demanding climb. You need to be clever to interpret the race at best”.

A significant group of Bahrain Merida riders will be at the Slovenian National Road Race Championships,

that will be held in Kranj on a circuit of 10 km (six laps, 160 km total). “I think the course can suit an attempt of breakaway and for that will be ready with Luka Pibernik” comments SD Gorazd Štangelj “Otherwise we can have the chance to compete in a sprint of a reduced group with Grega Bole, supported by Borut Bozic. There are various solutions, let’s see according to how the race goes”.

In China Meiyin Wang will ride the Time Trial on 24th,

the Criterium on 25th and the Road Race on 26th, while Tsgabu Grmay will compete in Ethiopia both in Individual Time Trial and in Road Race.Cyclists:

Italian National Championships:  Road Race: Agnoli Valerio, Manuele Boaro, Niccolò Bonifazio, Sonny Colbrelli, Enrico Gasparotto, Antonio Nibali, Vincenzo Nibali, Giovanni Visconti.  Individual Time Trial: Manuele Boaro

Joy for Shaikh Mohammed, heartbreak for Dettori

SPORTSWednesday, June 21, 201722

Shaikh Mohammed, the founder of the Godolphin racing empire, shelters from the rain at Royal Ascot (Guardian)

Ascot

Dubai ruler Shaikh Mohammed bin

al-Maktoum celebrated a treble on the first day of Royal Ascot, including two Group Ones, 40 years to the day since he had his first winner in England.

Whilst Shaikh Mohammed and his Godolphin Operation had a welcome day in the sun after a woeful period which ended with chief executive John Ferguson stepping down amid scathing criticism by trainer Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin’s former golden jockey Frankie Dettori had a day to forget.

The 46-year-old Italian was forced to admit defeat in his battle to recover from an arm injury and t h e n w a t c h e d as crack Am er ic an filly Lady A u r e l i a s t o r m e d home to

take the Group One King’s Stand Stakes.

The racing had got underway once a minute’s silence was observed -- with Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family standing in the parade ring -- in honour of the memories of the victims of the London tower block fire last week and the terror attacks that have struck England in recent months.

Shaikh Mohammed’s joy was unconfined as Ribchester broke the course record for a mile in the opening Queen Anne Stakes.

His mood was even sweeter as his nemesis Aidan O’Brien’s 2000 Guineas double winner Churchill couldn’t summon up his namesake’s fighting spirit, and was left floundering in fourth as Godolphin’s Barney Roy

won the feature St

James’s Palace Stakes.Shaikh Mohammed’s

delight at Ribchester’s victory in the course record time of 1min 36.6sec was palpable, kissing one of his daughters in his box -- the surroundings a far cry from when Hatta won at Brighton four decades ago to spark a great love affair with the turf.

“Hatta was my first horse and people were surprised when she beat the favourite at Brighton,” said Shaikh Mohammed.

“In life there is no winning post. You have to keep going, otherwise the rest will catch up with you.”  Barney Roy’s success turned the tables on Churchill, having finished

second behind O’Brien’s star in the English 2000 Guineas, and vindicated Shaikh Mohammed’s decision to miss the Irish equivalent and come to Ascot.“That was what Shaikh Mohammed wanted and he was dead right,” said Barney Roy’s trainer Richard Hannon.

O’Brien -- who until Tuesday had carried almost all before him this season in winning three of the four English classics --

said Churchill had run a good race, but jockey Ryan Moore was perplexed.

“He was never comfortable, I’m not sure why,” said Moore.

Dettori said missing Ascot was ‘soul-destroying’ and his mood would not have improved as his top ride for the day, Lady Aurelia, blitzed the field under Johnny

Velazquez to win the King’s Stand Stakes in almost as impressive style as she had in the Queen Mary Stakes under the Italian last year.

Her time was just 0.1sec outside the course record for five furlongs (1000 metres).

“That was awesome. Lady Aurelia is a very special filly,” purred trainer Wesley A Ward, who was welcoming home his eighth Royal Ascot winner.

Ward, who was the first American to train a winner at Royal Ascot back in 2009, spared a thought for Dettori as did Velazquez, who was only due to have one ride on Tuesday. “I arrived at half past eight this morning and saw I had 10 missed calls,” said the 45-year-old two-time Kentucky Derby winning rider. “They were wondering where I was and then they rang me when I was going through customs and I said I would have to ring them back... I’m pleased I did!” (AFP)

Mayweather return won’t overshadow me: Golovkin

London

Gennady Golovkin has dismissed the idea

that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s comeback against Conor McGregor will overshadow

his Sep 16 clash with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

W B C - I B F - W B A middleweight champion

Golovkin defends his world title belts at the T-Mobile Arena three weeks after Mayweather faces Conor McGregor at the same Las Vegas venue.

Five-weight world champion Mayweather, now 40, will not have fought for nearly two years by the time he faces 27-year-old Irishman McGregor, a mixed martial arts fighter, on Aug 26.

But McGregor, a  two-weight UFC champion,  has never fought as a professional boxer and faces the sport’s best practitioner for decades.

Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), 35, insists his fight with Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs)  is  bigger and of more significance  than

Mayweather-McGregor, which he sees as a “circus show”.

“This (Mayweather-McGregor)  is not for fighters, but business,” Golovkin told reporters at a press conference in London Monday.

“I think people understand what is a true fight, a boxing fight, like mine with Caneno or a big show, maybe sometimes for people a funny show, like a circus show.

Regardless of some dismissing it as a mismatch, Mayweather-McGregor is expected to do record business for a boxing fight and may eclipse Golovkin-Alvarez in revenue and television viewers.

But Golovkin-Alvarez is a fight for the ages, one of the most eagerly awaited boxing match-ups in recent memory.

Golovkin, a knockout machine  from Kazakhstan but now  based in California,  has made 18 consecutive world middleweight title defences  and  was taken to points  for the first time since 2008  by  American Daniel Jacobs in March.Alvarez, 26, also has an impressive record that has seen him win world titles in two weight divisions with one blemish -- by majority points decision to Mayweather in 2013.

Only one world title -- the

WBO -- will not be on the line when the pair collide, but the winner on Monday was offered the chance to fight for it later this year.

Alvarez, who cruised to a wide points win over fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in May, admitted he did not know who WBO world middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) was when the Briton addressed him at a press conference in London on Monday.

Saunders was linked to fighting Golovkin in his homeland of Kazakhstan on June 10, but the fight never happened.

Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo’s woes deepened yesterday when the star striker who

reportedly wants to quit Real Madrid was summoned to appear before a judge investigating tax fraud.

Ronaldo, 32, said to have vowed that he would never play for Real Madrid again, was ordered to appear in a Madrid court on July 31 to answer four counts of tax evasion of 14.7 million euro ($16.5m).

Spain’s Budget Minister  Cristobal Montoro urged media to respect the presumption of innocence regarding the four-time world player of the year.

“What is very important for me is to insist that no one is a criminal if he is not convicted,” Montoro told a press conference. “That is why we must apply the principle of presumption of innocence in all areas.”

Unhappy Ronaldo has left his future at the Spanish giants in doubt after angrily announcing last week that his “conscience is clear.”

Spanish tax authorities are also targeting Jose Mourinho, the Manchester United manager who was on Tuesday accused of evading 3.3 million euro ($3.7 million) in tax during his stay at Real Madrid.

Montoro said, however, that sports stars must be “exemplary” and “particularly scrupulous in the fulfilment of their tax obligations” because their actions “radiate over the whole society, for example on youth, children”.

According to media reports Ronaldo is unsettled at Real Madrid because he

believes the European champions did not back him as fully as he had hoped in his dispute with the taxman.

And he has also complained on multiple occasions in the past about Real supporters, who have resorted at times to jeering and booing his performance on the pitch.

However club president Florentino Perez disclosed that no offers had been received by Real to tempt Ronaldo away and the club was determined to keep him. “Ronaldo is a Real player and will continue to be so as far as we are concerned,” Perez told Marca sports daily Tuesday.

In an earlier report Marca said Ronaldo has told his teammates he was leaving and “there is no turning back”.

London

Andy Murray suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats of his career

as the world number one slumped to a stunning Queen’s Club first-round defeat by Australia’s Jordan Thompson yesterday.

Murray was hoping to warm up for his Wimbledon title defence by winning the Queen’s title for a sixth time, but instead he succumbed to an astonishing 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 exit against the world number 90.

The 30-year-old’s loss was all the more remarkable because Thompson was only called up to face Murray at the last minute.

Murray was scheduled to face Aljaz Bedene, but he withdrew with a wrist injury just hours before Tuesday’s match, leaving Thompson, who was at the west London venue as an alternate after losing in the qualifying rounds, to scramble to get ready for his unexpected date with destiny.

With the Queen’s champion well below his best, 23-year-old Thompson seized his opportunity in memorable fashion and handed Murray his earliest exit from the tournament since 2012.

“It’s a big blow for sure. It’s not ideal obviously,” said Murray, who has failed to get past the second round in three of his last four tournaments.

“He was better than me. I didn’t create loads of chances and didn’t return particularly well. “If I play like that, I certainly won’t win Wimbledon.”

The shock loss ended Murray’s 14-match winning streak on grass and his 10-match unbeaten run at Queen’s.

After reaching the French Open semi-finals to raise hopes that he was finally back on track following a poor first half of the season, Murray will head to Wimbledon, which starts on July 3, with fresh doubts about the state of his game.

“Andy’s the world number one. I’ve looked up to him. That’s definitely the biggest win of my career,” Thompson said.

“I was sitting around hoping to get a match. I got in the draw and I’m so lucky to be here.”

M u r r a y ’ s downfall left

Queen’s without the top three seeds as world number three Stan Wawrinka and world number six Milos Raonic also crashed out.Wawrinka was beaten 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 by Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the Swiss star’s first match since being thrashed by Rafael Nadal in the French Open final.

“I’m really sad to have lost. I would have liked more matches here,” Wawrinka said.

“There’s still a lot of work to do physically and on my game, to be in a better place on grass.”

Raonic finished as Queen’s and Wimbledon runner-up last year, but the Canadian’s hopes of another strong showing on grass were wrecked by Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis’s 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (10/8) triumph.

“I was just a little too passive. I was letting him dictate too much,” Raonic said.

“Obviously the disappointment is high right now.” (AFP)

Kumble resignsNew Delhi

Anil Kumble has stepped down as India’s head

coach after a one-year term that ended with the team’s defeat in the final of the Champions Trophy, the Indian cricket board said yesterday.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirms that Mr Anil Kumble has withdrawn his services as the post of the Head Coach for the Senior India Men’s team,” said a board statement.

“While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as Head Coach, Mr Anil Kumble has decided not to continue as the coach,” the statement added.

The former captain did not travel with the India team that left from England on Tuesday for a limited-overs tour of the West Indies starting June 23.

The BCCI had advertised for the coach’s position just before the 50-over marquee event, prompting rumours of a rift between the coach and India captain Virat Kohli.

The 46-year-old Kumble, who was put in charge last June, coached India to 12 victories in 17 Tests.

Former India greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have been tasked with selecting his successor.

Federer claims

tour win1100th

Halle (Saale)

Eighteen-time major champion Roger Federer picked up his first win of the

grass-court season by thrashing Japan’s Yuichi Sugita in the first round at Halle yesterday.

The Swiss top seed, who skipped the entire clay-court schedule in order to be fully fit for Wimbledon, brushed aside lucky loser Sugita 6-3, 6-1 in just 51 minutes, to bring up his 1100th win on the ATP Tour.

“I had never played him. And playing against me, all are always very motivated,” Federer told the Halle Open website.

“That doesn’t make it easy, but I’m very satisfied. That was a very good start into the Gerry Weber Open.”

Federer, who won his first Grand Slam title since 2012 at the Australian Open in January, lost the first match of his return to German

veteran Tommy Haas in Stuttgart last week. But the world number five was back to his

imperious best on Tuesday, as he broke in the fourth game en route to the opening set.

The 66th-ranked Sugita was no match for his illustrious opponent, although he did avoid a second-set bagel by breaking when Federer served for the match.

Federer, 35, will be one of the favourites as he looks to land an eighth title at Wimbledon, which runs from July 3 to July 16.

For now though the world number five will focus on winning the warm-up event in Halle for a ninth time, and he will face in-form home hope Mischa Zverev in the last 16.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mischa Zverev’s brother and fourth seed Alexander eased to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Paolo Lorenzi, while Kei Nishikori fought back from a set down to defeat Fernando Verdasco 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-4. Switzerland’s Roger Federer
