With the shorter days now upon us, you are likely to be returning from work in the dark. I have puttogether some simple crime prevention advice for winter that I hope you all find helpful.Dont make your home an easy target this winter.

Use timer switches on lights to make your home look occupied when youreout.

Close all curtains when its dark. Ask neighbours to remove parcels from the doorstep. Dont leave Christmas presents under the tree in full view, keep them out of

sight to the big day. Empty boxes left outside could advertise the goods that are inside your home.

Break up the boxes and dont put them out until the day of your recyclingcollection.

If you are going away over the Christmas period, ask a friend or neighbour tokeep an eye on your home.

Dont give car thieves an easy ride.. With the frosty mornings, and the need to defrost your car, never leave your car

unattended with the engine running. Remove your sat nav and its holder from your car, dont leave it in the glove

box as this is the first place a thief will look and make sure you wipe awayany suction markers on the screen from the holder.

On display, easy prey. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and never keep your PIN number with

your bank cards. Be vigilant and aware of who is around you, especially when withdrawing cash

out of a cash machine. Dont leave Christmas shopping on display in your car, keep it out of sight in

the boot of your car and make sure your car is secure. Enjoy the festive period season responsibly.

If you are out partying, clubbing or pubbing over the festive period, rememberthieves operate in crowded areas, so keep your mobile phone and other

valuables safe. If you go out with friends, make sure you come home together, never leaveanyone behind.

Think! Dont drink and drive. If using a taxi, make sure they are a genuine taxi and if you book a mini cab,

make sure that it is the one booked, by asking who the cab is booked for, before you get in.

Drink responsibly and never accept a drink from a stranger or leave your drinkunattended.

If you are walking home from a night out, do so in groups and stay in busy well

lit areas. Should you require any further crime prevention advice, please contact the Bowthorpe SaferNeighbourhood team on 101. PC Tony Lester

Last month I went with my family to the Theatre Royal to see the musical`Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The real story is of Joseph , the eleventh of twelve sons born to Jacob, who was favoured by Jacob with the gift of an ornamental robe. Josephslife was not a peaceful one. It was complicated by the folly of youth, broken dreams and the resentful and spiteful actions of his brothers. His

jealous brothers sold him into slavery and he was transported to Egypt. While in Egypt, he was falsely accused of trying to seduce the wife of hisEgyptian master and thrown into prison. Despite his `bad luck Josephremained without bitterness or anger. He knew God was in control, although circumstances seemed to say otherwise.

He eventually rose to the office of Prime Minister of Egypt, havingcorrectly interpreted Pharaohs dream about seven fat cows and seventhin cows. There would be seven years of plenty and seven years offamine. From prison to palace, once again Joseph was dressed in finerobes. His interpretation of Pharaohs dream meant that during sevenyears of plenty, Egypt stockpiled food. When seven years of famine hitthe region, Egypt had enough. It was then that Josephs brothers

journeyed to Egypt in search of food. Although they didnt recognise their

brother, he recognised them, and so his dream about their sheaves ofcorn bowing down to his was fulfilled. Joseph was blessed and Jacobsfamily survived. What was remarkable about Joseph was his response tohis brothers when he revealed his true identity: You intended to harmme, but God intended it for good.

How does this story help us today? The story reveals that no matter howbad things get, God is able to bring some good out of it.

Hello again Everyone. We hope you have not been shivering too much inthe recent cold spell. Hopefully it will improve before the real winter starts

and we will have an Indian Summer. However today it is obvious thatthe season of mists and cobwebs has really arrived, although some ofthe latter are truly beautiful works of art.

The Luncheon Clubs held at Ashwell Court on Tuesdays and Thursdays arecontinuing to prosper with some delicious meals provided by our cook,Christine. The excellent meals are terrific value for money, consisting of twosubstantial courses and coffee for 5, which is no doubt why the number of

    attendees is increasing.

Otherwise we are still exercising twice a week, and many of ushave noticed a marked improvement in our flexibility! Theexercises are gentle and designed for those who are less activeas well as those who are more active, but they do have aneffect.

In addition we have our monthly book club meetings and we areall reading avidly to get the most recent book read in time to

discuss it at our next meeting and with preparations for the Open Day heldat Ashwell Court on 20 th October, we have been kept very busy.

Our entertainment evenings recently featuring Pat James and Patsy Roseare always very popular and lively affairs with enormous buffets prepared byour entertainment team. These are very enjoyable evenings and thenumbers attending are increasing every time, not only for the excellententertainment and dancing but also for the buffets. We look forward to anevening with Dick High, Hoy and Fish and Chips.

Well thats all for this time. Best wishes from all at Ashwell Court.
