Making a Will
A Will is your expression of what happens to everything that you own when you die, and can be the everlasting reminder of you and your life for the people whom you leave behind. Making a Will is simply another way of expressing your love for family and friends, and it also provides a way to help good causes which you have supported during your lifetime.
Writing a Will is: Peace of mind for you • Adequate provision for your family and friends • Knowledge that YOUR wishes will be carried out.
• If you have a family it is important to make a Will for the sake of their security. A married person may assume that his/her spouse will inherit everything after death. This is not always the case.
• If you die without making a Will, the law decides how your possessions will be divided. Your spouse may not receive everything if the deceased also left children or other relatives.
• If your children are grown up and independent you may not need to worry about them, but if they are small you need to think of the worst that could happen.
• If you wish to provide for young children or grandchildren you might consider setting up a Trust for them in your Will. This can have tax advantages.
• If you make a Will you can make it absolutely clear what you want your spouse to have or who will be a guardian for your children after your death. To leave no doubt and to protect each other, you and your partner should make separate Wills.
What is a Will? Your questions answered.

About Dougie Mac
How do we support families?Douglas Macmillan Hospice has been caring for local people since 1973, both at the hospice in Blurton and in people’s own homes in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. Dougie Mac, as colloquially known, is the only adult hospice providing palliative care and support to local people with a life-limiting illness. The aim of Dougie Mac is to deliver excellent care to people approaching end of life.
• As an independent charity with no connection to any national charities, the hospice relies entirely on voluntary donations, which includes legacies, for 75% of the £13.4 million each year needed to run the wide range of services the hospice offers.
• Over 3,500 local people benefit from our care and support services every year; 65% of our patients are living with a cancer diagnosis with the remaining 35% facing other life-limiting illnesses, such as Dementia, advanced heart failure, Motor Neurone Disease and incurable lung diseases.
• At Dougie Mac we plan to expand our community ‘Rapid Response’ service to palliative patients in crisis for whom a hospital admission can be avoided, which further underlines the pivotal part played by the hospice in the local health system. We will also be extending our ambitions on the dementia agenda to make us one of the UK’s most formidable hospices in playing an active part in helping people who are living with dementia.
• We are a modern and multi-faceted hospice determined to maintain our reputation for the highest standards of care. We hope we can rely on the support of the local community to forge a relevant and impactful place in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.
It’s more than just a donation, it is your continued support for which we are truly grateful.

Why you should keep your Will up to date
Changes in circumstances: Moved house, changes in financial status.
If you marry, separate, divorce or re-marry you almost certainly should make a new Will because:
• Your wife or husband does not necessarily stand to benefit as you would wish, unless you have made your wishes clear in your Will.
• If you are separated from your husband or wife and living with another partner, that new partner is normally entitled to nothing, unless he or she is specifically named in your Will.
• If you are separated but not divorced from your wife or husband he, or she, if mentioned in your Will, is still entitled to the benefit of any legacy in that Will, unless you change it no matter how long the separation has lasted.
• If you make provision in your Will for your wife or husband but later get divorced, that provision will not be carried out. If you want to provide for a former partner you may need to make a new Will.
• Marriage normally revokes a Will (the only exception is where the Will is specially made in anticipation of a particular marriage) so on marriage any Will you have previously made will be null and void.
• A new job or a new house often leads to changes in your finances. It is good to review the value of your estate from time to time.
• You may also wish to consider leaving a gift to new additions to your family such as grandchildren or step children.

2. Issue means children including legitimate and adopted children (but not step children) grandchildren and great grand children etc Issue will benefit only if their parent has predeceased you. Issue benefit ‘per stirpes’ for example: Where a person who would have inherited has pre-deceased you leaving two children, that persons share is divided and passed to their children in two equal shares.
Spouse gets personal effects, first £250,000 and half of the residue. Children or

Spouse includes any person who is registered as a civil partner, as defined in the Civil Partnership Act 2004 but not partners who live together or have never married or entered into a civil partnership.
*Notes: ‘Issue’ is a person’s children or other lineal descendants such as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.It does not mean all heirs, but only the direct bloodline.

Leaving a lasting Legacy
• Every year 3,500 local people receive care and support from Dougie Mac, when either they or a loved one, have been diagnosed with an illness which is no longer curable. They will be facing an uncertain future after having been told the devastating news that they won’t recover.
• A donation in your Will can offer care and comfort to these people during their final days.
• Your generous gift could help to keep a person as well as possible for as long as possible. Helping them to make the most of the time they have left.
• You could give someone the choice about what care and support they receive. Whether that care is within the hospice or in the comfort of their own home.
• You could give a person the chance to share their journey with loved ones and allow them to die peacefully and with dignity.
• We understand that your family and loved ones come first when making your Will. Once you have planned for them please consider a gift to the hospice.
• No matter how big or small, leaving a donation in your Will can make a huge difference to the people and families from your community who are facing a life-limiting illness.
A precious gift of comfort and support…..

How could your Legacy help?
As an independent charity with no connection to any national charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, the hospice relies entirely on voluntary donations for 75% of the £13.4m each year needed to run the whole hospice. We expect this percentage to increase as NHS funding decreases each year.
The knock on effect for hospices put simply could be: No increase in statutory funding for several years.
You can help us to continue delivering tailored, professional care to patients and their families each year and enable Dougie Mac to weave its magic across our community.
It is more than just a donation, it is your continued support, it is YOUR Legacy.
How your legacy can help us tackle tomorrow’s challenges

Your Legacy living on
Dorothy attended the Day Therapy Unit at Dougie Mac. It was her wish to spend the last few days under their care. Her family saw her treated with great respect, tenderness and unconditional love with care that they will never forget.
Dorothy’s family explain the importance of making a Will and to consider leaving a gift to the Hospice.
It was Dorothy’s wish that she left a gift to the Dougie Mac in her Will because she wanted others to experience the care and attention that she and her family had received.
Consider Dougie Mac when making your Will to help them to continue to deliver the excellent care to people in their final days and support their families in the future.
More than just a donation, it is your continued support.
