Anne's relaxed style and easy listening voice have won her many square dance friends at all the dancing levels and from all corners of the world. Anne was born and grew up in Peterborough, Ontario of Scottish parents and as a child Anne knew nothing of square dancing. After she finished high school her parents took square-dancing lessons. When a local Mainstream caller was having a weekend dancing campout that her parents were planning to attend, they invited Anne to

come along to swim, enjoy the outdoors, or whatever since she had no specific plans for that weekend. It turned out that the dance was one dancer short of an additional square and Anne was drafted to fill in. After three days and a lot of push, pull, and shove, she was dancing (almost at Plus level) — and she was hooked! Anne then continued dancing at a local Mainstream club and enjoyed it immensely. She soon realized that there's a lot more to square dancing than she had ever dreamed, and thought, "This is for me!" Anne resides in Auburn, Washington with her wife Mary Hutchinson and their four cats.

I am pleased and honored to be the first person to get a “Pat on the Back” from Pat Roberts. After her initial offering, I decided to wing it as well and trust she will correct my syntax. Being relatively new to Trailblazers, first a little about my background. I was born and grew up in New York City. I went to the High School of Music and Art, now the Fiorello LaGuarda School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts; you know, the school from Fame. I was a fine arts major so I didn’t really get more than a rudimentary exposure to music and dance. I went on to the City College of the City University of New York where I pursued my childhood interest in Anthropology and Archaeology. Then it was on to the University of Arizona for my M.A. and Ph.D., specializing in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East. It was there that I got the Country Western bug and learned C/W dancing and also had my first exposure to clogging. (Who knew? A nice Jewish boy from NYC learning to clog?) Anyway, I had a long career in Archaeology, doing substantial stints in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and a little bit in Syria. I was never really interested in academia and being dead broke anyway and out of graduate school, I went into the emerging field of Cultural Resources Management. I worked throughout California and the greater Southwest from my new home in San Diego. During that time, there were several breaks to return to the Middle East. I am retired now since October 2015. OK, enough of that! After returning from 1-1/2 years working for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan excavating a Roman theater at Jerash, I returned to San Diego where I took up clogging with zeal. Eventually I co-founded a gay exhibition clogging team, the On-Tap Cloggers, which I taught, directed, and choreographed for ten years. I reached the highest levels of challenge clogging, but all that punishment and age finally reached my knees, and I called it quits. So now what? I took up square dancing, of course! I graduated from Plus level with the Finest City Squares in 2005, taught by Pat Carnathan. It did not take long before I wanted to keep going, and Magic Squares provided that opportunity with Advanced and then on to Challenge. I am now taking C3A under the expert (and no-nonsense) tutelage of Carl McCullough. C-2 is my highest level of competency, although some may disagree. The monthly dances at Trailblazers have helped me to become a better dancer, although some may disagree.

(continued from Page 6)

I attended my first International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs (IAGSDC) convention only six weeks after completing Plus. Ever since, I seem to thrive on the terror that dancing at a new level entails, although some may disagree. I will be getting my ten-year medallion(1) at the upcoming IAGSDC convention in Palm Springs this coming July. It’s all indoors so no worry. Every year I also look forward to Extravaganza, the West Coast A/C Weekend, and Catch C2 in the Wine Country. It’s not just the dancing but the camaraderie. Square dancers truly are a family, with all that it entails. So, Pat wants to know my favorite call. Right now It’s Explode the Top because it is new, complicated, and I can now do it! Like Pat, my least favorite concept is Split Phantoms. Carl can give you a more detailed list of calls I suck at. Oh never mind, you know which one those are already. As for my favorite caller . . . they all are. How’s that for diplomacy? So . . . see you all on the dance floor.

[A BIG Pat on the Back to Jerry for contributing this article…Pat Roberts]

(1) An IAGSDC Convention Medallion is awarded to Callers, Square Dancers, and Non-Square Dancers who have attended 10, 15 or 25 IAGSDC annual conventions.

National-Level Square Dancing Trailblazers offers a well-planned gateway for you as a Square Dancer to expand and improve your dancing abilities so that you will be able to go any place in the United States and feel comfortable with and confident about dancing on any floor — at any event — to any caller — at your desired level. In other words, National-Level Square Dancing — a standard for Square Dance definitions followed by all Square Dance Callers not only nationally but also internationally. Frequently in Trailblazers literature and flyers, as well as in our statement of purpose for the club, the term “National-Level” Square Dancing is used. Yet sometime this term does not seems to be clearly defined. Variety is generally considered the spice of life. Yet, for Square Dancing to be successful standardization and boundaries are necessary. This next statement is NOT in any way intended to cast any negative reflections on any caller, Square Dance club and/or Square Dance event. Local and regional Square Dance callers, clubs and events are a vital part of our favorite past-time. Yet for various reasons a proper, all-inclusive use of all calls on the CallerLab Advance list may not be part of a particular Square Dance group or event. Admittedly, if you have only had the opportunity to Square Dance to one particular caller when you started, and/or continued, Square Dancing, your first experience on a National-Level floor might exposed you to some new — strange — not so familiar — sounding calls. National-level Square Dancing is just another possible Square Dance trail for you to follow and enjoy. Most of all it is not a class above. Like the various levels in Square Dancing — Mainstream — Plus — Advance — Challenge — it is a different adventure to undertake when you are ready and feel comfortable in doing so. Some folks like chocolate Valentine candies, others like, peppermint-flavored. Trailblazers is happy to make available for you National-Level Square Dancing. Since this is our member-directed purpose, Trailblazers Board of Directors ensures our calling staff members are recognized national-level callers. Trailblazers is equally proud that we open our floor to any Square Dancer wanting to dance national-level. Likewise, Trailblazers members and officers attempt to make every effort to

ensure you succeed while attending Trailblazers’ dances. Our Square Dance program and goals are continually reviewed and evaluated. For almost four decades, Trailblazers has earnestly endeavored to enlist internationally and nationally recognized callers. Our honor and primary goal is to provide you the ultimate opportunity to enhance your Square Dancing skills while enjoying what our members and friends really enjoy doing. Thanks for being a part of our Trailblazers family.

Great seeing Carolyn Ulrich at the January 7, 2017 dance. She also brought with her some really good news. Her Mom was diagnosed with Mucinous Carcinoma Lung Cancer in early 2016. Carolyn Mom’s cancer is now in remission. When Carolyn took a leave from Square Dancing in February 2016, she remarked: “I can’t leave my Mom home alone for very long, or very often. I’ll be back when I can, but I don’t think it’ll be anytime soon. Carolyn, we are so glad your Mom has recovered. Richard Wells now residing in North Las Vegas, Nevada and who in 2004-2005 served as Secretary on the Trailblazers Board of Directors with his partner, Suzy Ries, reports that since January 9, 2017 he has had hospital stays and numerous tests due to a health issue with his lungs.

He is now at home but requires oxygen-assisted breathing.

Please convey to Richard and Suzy positive healing energies and your prayers.

His address: 3306 Capitol Reef Drive, North Las Vegas, NV 89032.

Thanks to Bruce Crabtree for so graciously keeping our drinking
