Welcoming  the  Class  of  2018  This  year  the  Admissions  Office  received  54,161  applications  from  48  states  and  96  countries.  The  Class  of  2018  is  projected  to  be  comprised  of  3,700  students.  Starting  on  June  11th,  the  first  of  eight  Summer  Orientation  sessions  began.  We  encourage  freshman  and  their  parents  to  participate,  but  don’t  take  our  word  for  it,  learn  about  the  orientation  experience  from  some  current  parents!

BU  Student  Employee  of  the  Year  Andrew  Parlato,  CAS’14,  COM’  14  began  as  a  caller  for  BU  Telefund  his  freshman  year,  advanced  to  shift  manager  soon  after,  and  ultimately  was  promoted  to  student  supervisor.  Andrew  continued  to  take  on  additional  responsibilities  such  as  working  with  the  Senior  Class  Gift  Committee.  This  recent  graduate  will  have  a  dual  degree,  a  Student  Employee  of  the  Year  Award,  and  a  new  job  as  the  student  giving  coordinator!  Congratulations,  Andrew!  Visit  the  Student  Employment  Office  to  learn  more  about  employment  opportunities  on  campus.

2014  Sloan  Research  Fellows    Two  College  of  Arts  and  Sciences  faculty  have  been  selected  for  these  prestigious  2  year  fellowships.  Meet  Sharon  Goldberg,  a  computer  scientist  who  has  devoted  her  research  to  the  Internet.  She  is  fascinated  with  the  scope  of  the  web,  the  very  few  laws  that  guide  it,  and  the  ever  growing  importance  of  keeping  networks  secure.

Jared  Weinstein  has  also  been  awarded  this  prestigious  fellowship.  Professor  Weinstein’s  expertise  is  number  theory.  We  take  for  granted,  or  perhaps  we  don’t  even  realize,  how  numbers  impact  our  everyday  lives,  from  cell  phones  and  pin  numbers  to  license  plates  and  bank  accounts.  Thank  you  professor  —we’re  using  these  numbers  every  day!

Window  to  the  World  BU  is  quite  literally  a  passage  to  the  world  for  so  many  students.  Individuals  travel  from  over  143  countries  to  study  at  BU.  Last  year  more  than  2,000  students  participated  in  the  BU  Study  Abroad  Program.  Our  faculty  members  and  researchers  travel  the  globe  pursuing  research  and  assisting  others.  And  more  than  27,000  of  our  alumni  live  outside  of  the  United  States.  It  is  for  these  many  reasons  that  BU  has  an  office  of  Global  Programs.  Their  spring  photo  contest  illustrates  the  BU  community’s  outreach.  Don’t  miss  these  truly  breathtaking  photos!

Arts  Initiative      Did  you  know  that  in  any  given  week  there  may  be  50  or  more  cultural  events  sponsored  by  the  Boston  University  Arts  Initiative?  For  example,  this  summer  the  Boston  Midsummer  Opera  will  present  The  Bartered  Bride.

Teaching  at  Trotter  BU’s  School  of  Education  has  a  long  standing  relationship  with  the  City  of  Boston  that  began  with  several  schools  around  Greater  Boston.  BU  is  currently  working  with  the  William  Monroe  Trotter  Elementary  School  in  Dorchester,  Massachusetts  as  well  as  English  High  School  in  Jamaica  Plan,  Massachusetts.
