A.ResearchProject

1. Introduction

Thisassignmentwillrequireyoutodevelopashortresearchreport.Youwillpickatopic,usetheinternettofindinformationonthissubject,andsummarizewhatyouhavelearnedinareportaboutonepagelong.Thisreportwillthenbeposted,alongwithtwopicturesrelatingtoyourresearch,ontheBOSCOWikispace.

Theresearchprojectwillgiveyouachancetodemonstrateandpracticeseveraldifferentcomputerskillsatonce.Instructionswillbeprovidedbelow,brokenintosections,buttherewillonlybeloosesuggestions.Youmayfindthisfrustratingbutthegoalhereistohaveyoucreateauniquereport.Ifyouareeverconfusedyoucanusethepreviouslessonstoguideyou.

2. ChoosingaTopic

Thetopicofyourprojectshouldbeanythingthatinterestsyou.Simplychoosesomethingyouwanttolearnmoreabout.Nosuggestionsareprovidedtoforceyoutothinkcreativelyandmakeyourowndecision.Ifyouarehavingtroublethinkingofatopictrythinkingofaquestionyouwantanswered.Alsoremember,youcanalwaysgobackandchangeyoursubjectifyoufindthereisnotenoughortoomuchinformation.Writedownyourtopicatthestartofanewworddocument.Ifyoudonotalreadyhaveadirectoryofyourowncreateoneandsaveitthere.

Task: Chooseatopicforyourresearchproject.Writeyourtopicatthetopofanewworddocumentonthecomputer.Makesuretosavethisdocumentwhereyouwillfinditlaterwithanameyoucanremember!

3. DoingResearch

Thisisthemostimportantpartoftheproject.YoumustusewhatyouknowaboutusingtheInternettocollectinformationaboutyourtopic.YoumayuseGoogle(Lesson2)oranothersearchenginetoaidinyourresearch.Theeasiestwaytobeginisbysearchingforakeyphrasethatrelatestoyoursubject.OnegreatresourceisWikipedia(Lesson4)butmakesureyoualsouseothersources,includingnewspapers.

Wheneveryoufindafactthatmaybeimportantrecorditinyourworddocument.MakesureyoualsoincludetheURL(Lesson2)forthewebpagewhereyoufoundtheinformation,thetitleofthearticleitwascontainedin,andtheauthorofthearticleifthenameisgiven.

Task: Researchyourtopic.Saveallinformationinthepreviousworddocumentunderneaththetopic.Makesuretorecordtheinformationforeverysourceusedandremembertosaveyourwork.Theremustbemorethanthreedifferentsources,andatleasttwoofthesemustNOTbefromWikipedia.

4. WritingtheReport

Usethesameworddocumentthatwasusedtosaveyourresearchtowriteyourreport.Thereportshouldbeaboutonefullpagelong.Ifyouhavealottoshareandwanttowritemoreyouarewelcometodoso.Donotworryifitisalittlelessthanafullpage.

Firstyoumustchooseatitleforyourprojectwhichrelatestoyourtopic.Thisshouldbeputbeforeyouwriteyourarticle.Alsoincludeherethedate.Thereportshouldstartbysayingwhatyourtopicisandwhyyouchoseit.Afterthisitshoulddescribewhatyoulearnedaboutyourtopic.Itshouldnotjustbealistoffactsbutshouldreadsmoothlylikeaprofessionalarticle.Donotcopydirectlyfromyoursources.Thisiscalledplagiarismandisillegalaroundtheworld.Instead,makesuretoputallinformationyoufindinyourownwords.

Ifyouhavewrittenabouteverythingyouhavelearnedandyouthinkyourreportistooshortyouhavetwooptions.Firstyoucangobackanddomoreresearch.Second,ifyoucannotfindmoreinformation,youcanchangeyourtopicslightlytoallowyoutodomoreresearch.

Task: Writeyourreportinthesameworddocumentthatyouusedtotakenotes.Itshouldbeonepagelong,butmaybelonger.

5. FindingPictures

Youmustfindatleasttwopicturesthatrelatetoyoursubject.YoucanfindtheseonthewebsitesyouusedforresearchoryoucanperformaGoogleimagesearch(Lesson2)foryourtopic.Tosaveapictureyoumustusethemousetorightclickontheimagethenselect“saveimageas”orasimilarlytitledfile.Saveallpicturestothesamedirectoryasyourresearchdocument.

Task: Findatleasttwopicturesofyoursubjectandsavethemtoyourpersonaldirectory.Makesureyousavethemwithfilenamesyouwillremember.

6. PostingtotheWikispace

OnceyourreporthasbeenwrittenyoumustpostittotheBOSCOUgandaWikispace.Ifyoudonotrememberhowtodothis,Lesson5containsinstructionsonhow.FromthemainResearchProjectspagecreatealinktoanewpagewiththesametitleasyourreport.Inthisnewpagewritethetitleofyourreport,yourname,andthedateyouwroteit.Belowthiscopyinthetextofyourreportfromtheworddocumentyoualreadycreated.Finally,uploadandinserttheimagesyousavedearlierandcreatecaptionsforthem.

Alsoincludeatthebottomalistofallofthesourcesusedforresearch,whichyoushouldhavesavedfrombefore.Makesuretoincludethetitleandauthorofallarticles.MakethetitlesintoexternallinksconnectingtotheURLsyourecordedearlier.Thiswillallowanyonetoclickonthetitleofthearticleandseeproofthatyourresearchiscorrect.

Task: PostyourresearchreporttotheWikispace.Feelproudathavingcompletedtheproject.

B.PhotoJournalProject

Thisassignmentisacreativeproject.Youmusttakethedigitalcameraandcaptureaseriesofphotographsthattellastory.Aswiththeresearchproject,thefirststepistochooseatopic.Youcantakephotosofwhateveryouwantinordertotellsomestorythatmeanssomethingtoyou.Onceagain,noexamplesaregivensoastoprotecttheuniquenessofyourproject.

Onceyouthinkyouknowwhatkindofstoryyouwanttotellgooutandtakesomepictures.Thesecanbetakenwhereveryouwantandofwhateveryouwantsolongastheyallhavesomesortofcommontheme.Planaheadwhenusingthecamerasoyoucapturetherightthingsforyourjournal.Youwillneedatleastsixpicturesforyourphotojournalbutitisagoodideatotakemoresothatyoustillhaveenoughifyoudecidenottousesome.

Oncethepicturesaretakenyoushouldloadthemintoyourpersonaldirectory.Itmaybeagoodideatomakeadirectorywithinitjustforyourphotojournalpictures.YoumayalsorenamethemsoitiseasiertorememberwhatpicturesarewhatwhenyouuploadthemtotheWikispace.

Nowgototheprojectsiteandcreateablanklinkwithyournameandatitleforyourphotojournalwhichshouldsomehowrelatetoyourtheme.Atthetopofthenewpageputthetitle,yourname,andthedate.Uploadandinsertatleastsixofyourpictures,thoughyoumayincludemoreifyouwouldlike.Resizeandrearrangethepicturesuntilyoulikehowitlooksandtheyareallinthecorrectorder.Provideanappropriatecaptionforeachpicture.Remember,thepicturesandtheircaptionsshouldformsomeastoryorreflectacommonthemewhenreadthrough.
