September 2012 Dear Parents and Students, "I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning." So wrote J. B. Priestly, the famed English novelist and playwright, and wisely. There is something about a new beginning that enthuses. It is with enthusiasm that our Don Bosco Prep school community begins another pastoral year of education and evangelization centered on the young. We warmly welcome back returning students. And we open our doors and hearts to new students as well. All, we believe, are brought here by Mary, our Mother, for reasons assuredly known to her.
A word of welcome to the families of our students as well. Recognizing that parents are the primary educators of their children, we are grateful for the opportunity you give us this year to collaborate with you in the formation of your sons as “honorable citizens and good Christians”.
We welcome 12 new colleagues to partner with us in our mission of Salesian education this year: a new School Secretary/Attendance Officer; one new teacher of Physical Education; one new College Counselor; one new teacher of Social Studies; two new teachers of Mathematics; two new teachers of English; and four new teachers of Theology.
As last year, so this year, we have increased our overall number of teachers so as to allow for smaller class sizes and more quality instruction. In particular, we are continuing with the process, begun two years ago, of restructuring the Theology Department so as to strengthen for our students the linkage between faith and life. To this end, we have also provided for a fulltime Youth Minister to work with Fr. Manny and the Youth Ministry Team in the wide array of faith formation programs they animate. Some parents, stopping by campus in recent weeks, have remarked to me that the campus has never looked so attractive. Thanks are certainly due to Fr. Jack, who oversees countless facility improvements, and to Br. Alfred, whose tireless work in the gardens yields such colorful beauty. As we begin this new season of Salesian education in the spirit of St. John Bosco, let us join together in living the gospel of joy and the pedagogy of kindness which he tirelessly advocated. Blessings to you,
Father James Heuser, SDB Director/President

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
September 2012
Dear Parents and Guardians,
With this bulletin, I welcome you to the new academic year, 2012-2013. As you read these words, we
will be in the midst of our faculty orientations in preparation for the arrival of approximately 870 boys in
the first week of September!
The orientation days we hold for our young men are important days to introduce (or re-introduce) them to
the mission and charism of the Salesian priests and brothers and to recall the importance of Catholic edu-
cation. St. John Bosco called upon his first teachers and students to become “honest citizens and good
Christians” and today we hope for the same. In the more than 95 years that Don Bosco Prep has been in
existence, this core of our mission has remained unchanged. While the past years have seen many chang-
es in the nature of our student body, the look of the campus and the composition of our faculty, we re-
main faithful to the vision St. John Bosco began with. We continue to strive daily to ensure that the Prep
is a school that prepares for the future, a playground where the young make new friends, a church that
evangelizes and a home that welcomes. It is through the commitment of the Salesians, our faculty and
staff, and through a partnership with our parents that we make that vision a reality.
I had the opportunity to meet with some students this summer to discuss setting goals for the coming
year. Remember that each new school year brings with it new challenges and exciting opportunities.
What separates those who succeed from those who do not is that the successful student has set firm goals
for himself and has developed a plan to achieve them. As parents, we can assist our children by helping
them develop a plan for success through good study habits, good time management and through provid-
ing support and encouragement along the way. Remember that we are most successful when we work
together as a team; you are the primary educators of your children and I am honored that you have
charged Don Bosco Prep with partnering with you along your son’s journey.
In many ways, this has been a summer of great growth for the school. You may be aware of the replace-
ment of the upper field and track and the plans to begin installing an artificial surface on the lower field.
These enhancements greatly increase our recreational space for athletics, Phys. Ed, summer camps and
the many opportunities we have to be a playground for the young. Also this summer, every classroom on
campus was equipped with a SmartBoard to be used for classroom instruction. During these days, the
entire faculty will receive training in its effective use. These boards will help provide the tools and infra-
structure for even more innovative teaching and learning.
Finally, in an effort to keep you even more aware of the great things happening at Don Bosco, you can
now follow me on Twitter (@dbpprincipal); sign on to keep abreast of what promises to be another great
year here at the Prep!
I look forward to a wonderful school year and know that the adults here at Don Bosco will do all we can
to help your sons achieve, and even surpass, the goals they have set for themselves. Know of my prayers
for you and your families throughout the year, and pray for us, also, as we welcome your sons back to
Don Bosco Prep.
In Don Bosco, John Stanczak

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR ACADEMICS
Dear Parents, Students, and Friends, Welcome to the new school year. As you start, I would encourage each student to remember the Don Bosco Prep policy that class placement for sophomores, juniors and seniors is based on the grades earned during the previous year. This system provides an equal opportunity to all: students are not locked into tracks. Students who earn the required grades may move to higher level classes on a subject by subject basis. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements are moved to a level more in line with their achievement. Sometimes students go to the Guidance Office and/or me and request placement in classes for which they do not otherwise qualify. They ask based on what they feel they ought to be able to achieve or based on what a college they are hoping to attend is looking for. Although we always try to consider all relevant factors, in general we are hesitant to approve such requests. The best predictor of future performance is past performance. There is no more heartbreaking part of the job than telling a student that he does not qualify for a course that he wants to take because he does not meet the minimum requirements. Yet it is these same minimum requirements that spur other students on to achievement. Additionally at times there are scheduling conflicts that occur which may impact some student schedules/course requests. The general rules for placement in classes are as follows: A 93 is required to move up from a college prep class to an honors class. A 93 is required to move up from an honors class to an AP class. Students may not move directly from a college prep class to an AP class. An 85 is required to maintain an honors class. A 90 (or an 85 with an AP exam score of 3) is required to maintain an AP class. If you want to take honors or AP classes in the future, now is the time to work hard to earn the necessary grades.
I would like to make you aware of some dates that are extremely important if your son intends on dropping or adding a course:
Friday, September 28, 2012: The last day to drop/add any course(s) for grades 10, 11 and 12 (Please be advised that currently many of the senior electives are closed so changes/availability is limited).
Friday, October 5, 2012: The last day to drop/add any course(s) for grade 9. All requests for schedule changes (drop/add) must be submitted in writing to your son’s assigned guidance counselors before the aforementioned deadline(s) so that ideally any changes can be made before the deadline or at the very latest on the last day of the deadline. Sincerely yours in Don Bosco,
Dr. Albert Del Principio
Assistant Principal for Academics

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
I trust that all of you are enjoying the last days of your summer vacation and are completing your
preparations to begin the 2012-2013 Academic Year here at Don Bosco. The Class of 2013 will soon
be looking forward to their graduation and making plans for life after “The Prep”. Whether you are
anticipating graduation, beginning life at “The Prep” or returning for another year, there is an
expectation that ALL students will be compliant with the mandates set forth in the Parent/Student
Handbook, also referred to as the Agenda. The new Agenda will be distributed on the first day of
school, however, you may currently view it online by going to the DBP website, activating the
“Offices” prompt and then the “Administrative” section. You will find the updated “2012-2013
Student/Parent Handbook” on the left side of the page. Please read the Handbook carefully. I
have noted the following information in past meetings and newsletters, but believe these issues bear
repeating:
Since the desired attire has been well documented, and adequate notifications have been made, the
school will rigidly enforce the dress code in the days to come. Students and parents should have
already contacted Flynn and O’Hara for orders/questions. The time allotted to become
compliant has been more than adequate. If you have not done so already, please attend to
uniform issues immediately. No “grace period” will be extended. “This uniform is similar’’, “I
didn’t have time” or “I’ve always worn this”, along with other potential defenses, will not be
accepted as valid excuses for the failure to comply with uniform requirements.
Please be reminded that when wearing the regulation shorts, a student may only wear “solid white
sneakers-below the level of the ankle”. Please refer to the new Agenda, if you should have any
questions. “Hi-tops” and/or footwear other than plain, solid white are not acceptable. Only white socks,
“ankle to mid-calf in length”, are permitted with shorts. When wearing dress shoes (pants), only above
the ankle dress socks may be worn.
Please note the cell phone restrictions that are noted in the Handbook/Agenda.
Parents and students are again reminded that hooded garments (“hoodies”) cannot be worn on campus
at any time. This includes the hooded “spirit wear” that is sold by a number of booster clubs. If the
garment has not been approved by the school, hooded or otherwise, it may not be worn during school
hours. In order to avoid any problems, you should contact Mrs. Saglimbene in the bookstore (x143/178)
to clarify any outerwear/uniform questions.
While athletics play a significant role in many students’ lives, the involvement in sports does not exempt
the student from their other responsibilities. Student/Athletes that have a mandated after-school
academic program or detention may not self-exempt themselves for athletic- related functions. It should
be remembered that the participation in DBP athletics is a privilege, and those that choose to
participate must comply with all school mandates or risk being suspended from extracurricular
activities.
Your cooperation is essential in assuring that DBP continues the tradition of providing a quality Catholic
education which emphasizes spiritual, academic and physical growth, while striving to instill a sense of
discipline and ethics that will shape the future of our Ironmen. Please contact me with any questions or
concerns. Take care and be safe.
Regards,
Ed Nekel

From The Office of Youth Ministry
“God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer”.
Mother Teresa
I hope our Don Bosco community enjoyed their summer break, a summer that flew
by rapidly. This summer like most summer months I worked in our Salesian Camp in
New Rochelle, NY. The camp is called Camp Echo, a camp that has been opened for
about 72 years. I was the youth minister at the camp which averaged 380 kids a week. I
was there for 5 weeks and it was an amazing time and that is because I was in the
chapel for two hours every day with the kids. The kids receive religious instruction in the
chapel everyday and they were broken up into 4 different age groups. I felt God’s
presence all summer as I prayed with so many young people. I walked around camp
sometimes and I observed that kids were running around playing organized games. I
saw many young people laughing and smiling and this scene brought me back to Don
Bosco’s original oratory. The oratory for Don Bosco was a place where young people
were able to express their youthful energy in a positive way. It was a place where the
young encountered a loving and joyful God. I pray that this year our young people are
able to experience the oratory of Don Bosco! However, if we want to bring the love and
joy of God this year to Don Bosco prep, we need to take time to speak to God for He
does speak to our hearts. I hope and pray that our youth ministry office this year can
enlighten and encourage our young people to listen to God in the silence of their hearts.
It is only in prayer that we can receive that power from God to do the impossible.
Matthew 17:20, Jesus tells us we can even lift mountains through the power of prayer!:
"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from
here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you”.
Let us be united in prayer this year and encourage one another in prayer. I want to
thank God this year for the assistance and support we will receive from Mr. John
Khanjian, our new youth minister. He will be helping me in all our youth ministry
activities, so please stop by and say hello in the youth ministry office.

Welcome to the 2012 – 2013 School Year! Can you believe that summer is over already. Hope that it was a good one for you and your family. I offer a few suggestions as you transition back to school. The first day of school would be a good time to: -bring in any outstanding paperwork like physical exams, medication authorization forms, allergy or asthma action plans -bring in any medications that need to be dispensed during school hours -bring in any physicians notes indicating an inability to fully participate in gym class or sports -bring in documentation of immunizations that you were told were missing from your son's health records -bring in any diabetic supplies and/or snacks to be kept in the Health Office -bring in physicians orders for second set of books, when indicated If your son is new to the school and has a special medical need or concern, please have him stop by to see me. I want these students, in particular, to know me and know where to find me. It will take me awhile to get to know everyone but I want to make them my priority. My office is in Immaculata Hall across from the cafeteria. My hours are 7:15am - 2:15pm when school is in session.

Dear Parent, I am pleased to introduce Family Connection, a service designed especially for students and families. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you and your child can use to help in making plans about courses, colleges, and careers. Family Connection is linked with Navi-ance Succeed, a service that we use in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date information that’s specific to our school. Family Connection will allow you and your child to:
Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers
Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual
historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in past.
Research careers – Research hundreds of careers and career clusters, and take career as-sessments like the Do What You Are test.
Create plans for the future – Build course plans, create goals and to-dos, and complete
tasks assigned to you by the school to better prepare yourself for your future college and career goals.
Family Connection also lets us share information with you and your child about upcoming meet-ings and events, local scholarship opportunities, and other resources for college and career in-formation. SPECTRUM
The Spectrum Program will return to DBP this fall. Spectrum is a peer support program for young people who have experienced the loss of a parent, family member or friend because of death, divorce, separa-tion or abandonment. Spectrum is NOT counseling or therapy; it IS an opportunity to meet other students who have experi-enced loss in their own lives, to support and learn from one another, to discuss their experiences of loss and how to face those difficult times, and an opportunity to help one another move on in life in a more positive way. It's hard to talk about loss. Sometimes kids feel that friends don't understand, or that others are tired of hearing about their pain. It may be hard to talk at home, where family members are dealing with their own problems. Too often, adults don't realize that kids are hurting too. They think young people will just "bounce back". That's not realistic, and it's not fair to the kids who are hurting. Some of the topics discussed include helping students to understand loss and how it may be affecting them, anger, sadness, dealing with changes in the family and their new role and responsibilities, unreal-istic guilt, making positive choices and decisions, and forgiveness.
Here are some student reflections about Spectrum from past years:
“Spectrum is a cure for my silent pain” “I have become more open”
“It was nice to meet other kids with some of the same problems”
“I now understand why things happen the way they do”
“I am a happier person”
“Spectrum allowed me to realize I was in a different boat than most by no fault of my own and to work around and solve some problems”
“Before I attended Spectrum talking about my problems was a situation I often avoided”
“I’ve learned to let my feelings out in a positive way”
“I have a greater sense that there are people who care about me … they know what I’m going through”
Students meet after school in a small group with a trained adult facilitator for about an hour once a week, for twelve weeks. Groups will begin by late September and the program will conclude by Christmas.
Students interested in joining Spectrum or who have questions about the program are asked to
contact Mr. DeLucci in the Guidance Office.

FATHERS’ CLUB LETTER,
To All Don Bosco Parents,
Please consider joining the Don Bosco Prep Fathers’ Club. The Fathers’ Club is a social and
philanthropic organization that provides the parents of Don Bosco students the opportunity to
support the school community. Club members plan and staff social and fundraising events, run
the refreshment stand during varsity football games, and provide volunteers for many school
activities.
Over the course of the summer, we will be gathering for a few meetings to prepare for the
kickoff of the football season; snack shack clean up, inventory and restocking, the Freshman
BBQ and Touchdown Club BBQ. These are fun events which lead us into the busy fall football
season and our major fundraiser; running the Ironman snack bar. Last year’s net proceeds
funded more than $25,000 in scholarships and school activities.
It takes many volunteers to keep the snack bar operating, and we hope that you will consider
joining us this summer and/or fall. We have found that the more active and involved you are as
a Father of a DBP, the more likely that your son will be an engaged and contributing member of
the school community.
On behalf of all of us in the Fathers’ Club, I hope that you will find some time in your schedule
and become a part of the Fathers’ Club and contribute whatever time you may be able to afford.
If you are interested in joining, or have any questions, please call me at 973/495-9771, or email
me at [email protected]. We look forward to having you as a member of the Don
Bosco Prep Fathers’ Club.
Sincerely,
Casey Meyer
DBP Fathers’ Club President
