GENERAL INFORMATION AND APPROACH
There are, I have found, countless hidden gems in and
around Bewdley town centre. Numerous still lie
undiscovered. Yet this is one little piece of heaven, I
discovered a few years ago and, to this day I remain in
awe of it. An absolute delight, truly.
If I have tempted you enough to begin the journey with
me, I can, without hesitation, say you won't be
disappointed. So come take a peak you will be so
delighted you did!
Hayden Estates are honoured to proudly offer this
period property and its superb landscaped walled
gardens for sale.
The exterior of the main building isn't pretty. It is clean
and tidy having been repainted in the last couple of
years, but its not a building that grabs your attention.
Indeed you would be forgiven to have walked passed it
hundreds of times and never really wondered or were
concerned what lay behind the peripheral. However,
as I always say 'never judge a book by its cover'
Borough House. This is the building I am describing. A
little bit of history. It is true a building stood on this site
in the 1300s. Today it boasts a Georgian façade,
which, as stated above, only recently has undergone
substantial works.
A listed building, which, had been a gentlemans
abode, for, at one time a doctor no less. He was in
residence until he lost the property gambling! Another
usage was that of a wine merchants.
The cellars to this property were extensive, however
now long unusable. Gossip also recalls it was used as
a house of ill repute!
Probably for the many boat men who came into
Bewdley and frequented the copious amounts of ale
houses!
It was renamed Borough House when owned by the
Borough Council. Well what else could they have
called it after its previous occupants?! The council kept
it until they moved all business to Kidderminster.
The building once unoccupied, was divided up into
apartments. However with the appearance of offices
still very apparent in the entrances. However, the
individual apartments retain many original features,
with the high ceilings, decorative cornices and coving,
wide doors and sash windows.
Today, Borough House is owned by Wyre Forest
Community Housing Group. There are five apartments
within the building. Some privately owned.
Number five is the property being sold today. This one
being on the top floor, boasts a large loft and an
exquisite large landscaped garden. Although there
was a garden with this flat originally, it was far smaller
then. However the council wanted to sell off the
communal garden areas, so the then owner of
apartment five purchased the extra ground for himself.
That was indeed an excellent wise move!
There is a locked communal entrance off Load Street
into a stone flagged floored hallway. At the end of this
hall, go through the door and outside. Turn right and
into another reception area.
Climb the impressive carved staircase to the top floor
and apartment five.
Having been redecorated, replaced gas boiler, fire and
one radiator. The carpets were also replaced.
This is an extremely spacious three double bedroom
apartment. Larger than most three bedroom semis!
Super roof top and countryside views. An enviable
vantage point in the heart of the town with views up
and down Load Street. Yet you could be anywhere!
For those wanting town centre living this is a splendid
purchase!
And so, the expedition begins. Are you ready?

GARDEN
When they say we've saved the best until last, this
couldn't be more true! The piece de resistance!! The
garden, owned and used exclusively by apartment
five. It is accessed via a paved pathway. Passing
other small private gardens.
A lockable wrought iron gate allows access into what
can only be described as wonderland!
Meticulously maintained landscaped gardens, with
something for everyone! Majority walled. This is a
considerable space. Heaven created here in the very
heart of Bewdley. Paradise it actually is! Private and
so peaceful!
Brimming borders which tumble over and soften the
pathways as they meanders through the garden.
Mainly laid to lawn which is close cut, with large
shaped patio. Countless spaces for tubs and planters,
table and chairs, barbeque etc.
Ideal perhaps, for a fire pit or chimenea on the patio
for entertaining evenings on cooler nights. Just
perfect!
A substantial wooden shed, with power and outside
lighting. Ideal for the bar perhaps!
Mature planting including various fruit trees, with
several different areas to enjoy, being cleverly
designed, yet sit so comfortably together. Climbing
shrubs such as Clematis, Wisteria and Roses for
instance adorn the walls. Reclaimed brick walling with
arch and decorative wrought iron railings separates
another area. Fruit bush beds for Raspberries and
Strawberries.
Two greenhouses, ideal for potting on. A concealed
composting area. Hidden at the one end of the garden
is the Hen house. So very self sufficient if you wished
to be!
Then, when you thought it was all over, with nothing
else left to excite you, you stumble across the large
pool with water fall feature, water lilies and water
loving plants. Further crazy paved patio, perfect to sit
and listen to the sound of the water.
Covered store, ideal for wood. Further composting
area and vegetable plot.
Concealed storage space with hard standing base.
Two further wooden sheds. There is access to the side
from Load Street alongside McColl's.
This is somewhere you won't want to leave. Full of
sunshine. Hardly any noise disturbs the peace and
tranquillity here, tantalising flora and fauna. The birds
and the occasional 'toot toot' of the steam train as it
begins to leave Bewdley station, the chug, chug, as
the heavy old engine gains momentum occasionally
bring you back to reality.

Bewdley is a Georgian riverside town attracting many
visitors each year. There are several eating houses,
shops to browse in and the Museum. There are so
many architectural buildings of great interest.
Cleobury Mortimer, Ludlow, Bridgnorth are all ideal
places to visit and shop and are within 15 miles from
Bewdley.
The golden age of steam can be enjoyed at the
Severn Valley Railway, which is adjacent to
Kidderminster's main railway station.
This railway has stations alongside the river Severn in
Bewdley, Arley and Bridgnorth. Several events are
hosted by them throughout the year and draws hoards
of visitors to the town.
These include the Santa Special and 1940s
weekends. Many films have been staged on the
platforms. The West Midlands Safari Park is on the
outskirts of Bewdley with many endangered features.
The park was recently featured on mainstream
television.
Kidderminster was once the capital throughout the
world for its carpet manufacturing industry has
survived the decline of this major employment and
business and diversified into a thriving town. Old
buildings which were in times gone by, full of workers
and a hive of activity had fallen into disrepair. Now
they have been brought back to life to provide us with
some history and a new generation of occupants and
usage.
The canal was used for the transport of goods and fuel
for these large factories, yet now provides the back
drop for the eating houses and shops etc which nestle
beside the water.
Many visitors will use the waterways on their narrow
boats which are navigable between Kidderminster,
Wolverley, Stourport and Birmingham. Change has
happened yet the town is bustling again with vibrant
appealing shops and eating establishments.
Wolverley Arboretum, Kinver Edge are both well
visited beauty spots, so you are never far away from
grand scenery and wide open spaces. The Wyre
Forest boasts wonderful wildlife and many miles of
footpaths.
There is a train station in Kidderminster which provides
a service to Birmingham, London and Worcester and
beyond which is ideal if one works in the city. There is
a bus service too which runs regularly.
For supermarket shopping etc, Kidderminster Town
Centre has Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi and Morrisons, Co
operative store and Asda. With many more top high
street stores. There is a small cinema and leisure
facilities as well as a wide selection of eating houses.
There are two main retail parks just off the town centre
which have varied larger stores with good parking
facilities too.
Stourport is a well visited riverside town with many day
and holiday trippers. The town has a wide selection of
shops and amenities and is worthy of a stopover.
Ideal location for commuting, with a good road network
to M5, M6, M42, Birmingham, Stourbridge and
Wolverhampton and Worcester all within travelling
distance. As we have already mentioned the
Kidderminster railway station provides good frequent
travel.
