AN ASPIRING band from Bootle got the chance to perform in front of hundreds of football fans outside Goodison Park. Shamona, which is made up of three 19–year–old friends, played a gig outside Everton’s stadium at the FanZone stage in the build up to a recent home fixture. Pete Riley, Andy O’Connor and Sean Burns, who have played pop/rock music since they first met when they were pupils at Hillside High School, formed the band in 2011. And following their success over the last four years, Everton picked their track, ‘Game Is Yours’ as the soundtrack to an upcoming video to promote their season ticket campaign. SEFTON Council plans to save more than£55million over two years after setting itsbudget for 2015/16 while increasing theborough’s Council Tax charge by 1.99%.It is likely to mean services across the borough
will be further slashedCouncil chiefs say the cuts are necessary
because of a huge reduction in Governmentfunding over four years of which has led to toSefton having to make savings £114 millionfrom services.By the end of 2017, the council will have lost
£169 million from its annual budget – whichequates to 45% in real terms since 2011.Council chiefs said the 1.99% increase in
council tax was needed to minimise the impactof the government funding on services. This equates to an increase of just under 50p a
week for Sefton residents for a Band Dproperty. It is the maximum amount the local authority
can increase council tax without holding areferendum. It means the annual bill for an average Band D
property for 2015/16 will now be £1,317 forSefton services (£1,548 including Police andFire). This does not include some Parishprecepts. Sefton Council leader Peter Dowd, said: “Yet again we have had to set a verydifficult budget in light of the consequences ofmassive cuts to our funding by theGovernment.“Spelling this out very simply, our real terms
spending is getting close to half the amount
that it was in 2011 and this is bound to impactupon really important services.“Due to the scale of the cuts, we are again
setting a two–year budget plan so we canensure the delivery of savings is planned andsome proposals can be timed to beimplemented later in the two–year period incase circumstances change.“We have always been transparent and open
about our savings proposals and we havelistened to people and made sure that we havereviewed all options before making thedecisions we have made.”Crosby Councillor Michael Roche said: “The
main cuts are expected to hit the borough withsome of the possible measures resulting instreet lighting hours being reduced, allotmentfees rising and school meals going up.”It could also affect library users, with
speculation that Crosby Library will have itsopening hours cut back so the facility is nolonger open during the evening.Other proposals include saving more cash by
turning off street lighting and charging forpublic toilet use across the [email protected]
£55m more cuts toservices and 1.9%rise in council tax

“The experiences of the builder orthe office worker playing together ona Saturday afternoon is seldomchronicled so I thought it important toget those times documented.“Bootleians have been going for 103
years with some players spendingmore than 30 years at the club at agiven time and they all have a story totell. This book is just the tip of theiceberg.”The book, which cost £7.50, can be

A BOOTLE child who struggles to walk on herown due to a rare genetic disorder has reachedthe top of Mount Snowdon after her lovingparents decided to carry her as part of afundraiser.Holly Kitchen, aged four, suffers from
Trisomy 9 Mosaicism (T9M) which is a seriouschromosomal disorder that only affects onlyten people in the UK and 93 worldwide. Her parents, Barry and Gail, decided to climb
the tallest mountain in Wales on Sunday in thehope of raising some money for charity andalso some awareness of the condition. After spreading the word through their own
charity, the family were amazed to be joined bymore than 70 other people from across thecountry who wanted to show their support forHolly. And the youngster was delighted to
personally take part in the fundraiser, with aspecial frame being used so Barry and Gailcould carry her to the top.Barry said: “We wanted to do this as a
fundraiser and through the T9M charity weasked if anyone wanted to join us.“Amazingly we had around 70 strangers from
all over the place say they wanted to help Hollyand get involved which is fantastic.
“Holly was delighted to take part herselfbecause this is all for her and she is why thecharity has got so much interest becauseeveryone is talking about her.”Holly gained national limelight last year
when ITV reported on her condition onGranada news to highlight the rarity of herillness. There are only 93 reported cases of T9M in the
world, which makes Holly one in 100,000,000people, but unfortunately there is no cure andit can lead to a whole host of unpredictable andserious medical problems.Gail recently set up the TPM charity and to
help mark the occasion she invited 11 othersufferers of the condition to a special event inBootle where they got the chance to meet eachother. It is now hoped the Snowdon climb will not
only raise money for the charity but furtherenhance the charity’s profile and attract moreinterest.Trisomy 9 mosaicism (T9M) is a rare genetic
condition caused by having an extrachromosome in some of the cells of the body.

RESIDENTS are being asked to bevigilant after a woman in Maghull wasa victim of a particular nastycomputer scam which led to her losingall her personal files and pictures. The Champion highlighted a scam in
June last year which involved aperson calling someone at their homeand saying they are from Windowsand have detected a problem withtheir computer. They go on to ask the recipient to
access Team Viewer on theircomputer and give them the codedisplayed so they can fix the problem. However, this gives them access to
the computer where they can addviruses and access personalinformation.Steve Carr from Maghull computer
specialist AbbeyTech IT has recentlyhad a customer who became a victimof this scam, however the con artistswent as far as to delete all the personalinformation off the computerincluding private files and photos.Steve added: “This customer was not
aware this was a scam as thegentleman who rang her was veryconvincing.“After allowing him access to her PC
and apparently fixing the non existentsecurity problem, he requestedpayment.“After my customer refused to pay
the gentleman he said it would takehim some time to remove the softwarehe previously had put on.“It seems during this time the rogue
caller deleted a large number of filesfrom my customer’s computerincluding all her personal files andphotographs. The PC could not be used afterwards
as it was left in such a mess and this iswhen the customer brought it in to usand we discovered the extent of the
damage they caused. I wanted tohighlight the growing number of coldphone call computer security scamswe were hearing about from ourcustomers.“These cold call scams are varied but
from my experience the caller willsuggest they are calling fromMicrosoft, a Microsoft Partner orsometimes your Internet ServiceProvider.“They will suggest your PC or laptop
has some security issues which needresolving.“They will ask to obtain remote
access to your PC and will show youan alleged list of security issues.“They will offer to fix them and I
have heard fees ranging from £40 to£250. Generally all they will do is load
freely available anti–virus softwareon your PC.“The best advice if you receive these
calls is to hang up immediately and ifyou are in any doubt about thesecurity status of your PC get itchecked by a professional.“People should take the caller’s
information down and immediatelyreport it to your local authorities.“Never provide your credit card or

Cooney twice kicked one of the officers to theleg, Mrs Conlan said, adding that she wasalready on a court order for an assault against aconstable and had three other assaults againstofficers on record.Solicitor John Jones said that Cooney had
been “extremely drunk” at the time of theincident and afterwards apologised to policefor accusing them of mishandling her. She wasultimately not questioned for assaulting herpartner, he said, as her partner told police he’dactually banged his head on a table.Saying that she believed she was barefoot at

ARTWORK plaques in Bootle Cemetery whichhad been criticised as “disrespectful” byresidents have been removed after they weretargeted by vandals.Around 100 small plaques had been placed at
the cemetery to mark 100 years since itopened, as reported in The Champion inNovember. An artist was tasked by Sefton Council with
coming up with the designs for plaques helpedby local schoolchildren. They included references to buses, Morse
code and even a box of cornflakes to showdifferent aspects of the local community. But residents slammed the ‘plaques’ as
“disrespectful to mourners” and inappropriatefor a cemetery. One resident said at the time: “It is only a
matter of time before they are written all overor knocked down and that will look even worsein the middle of a cemetery.”The artwork has lately been targeted of
vandals and the council has now decided toremove the plaques and store them at theThornton Garden of Rest cemetery. They were spotted last week by a Champion
reader who was visiting the cemetery andnoticed the plaques piled up at the site.
The man said: “I was at the cemetery inThornton when I saw them all just lying on thefloor in the bit which is blocked off frommembers of the public.“I recognised them from Bootle Cemetery so
maybe they are going to put them up inThornton.”The future of the artwork remains unclear but
Sefton Council appear to be open to thepossibility of using them in the future.A spokesperson for Sefton Council said:
“Sadly some of the artwork at Bootle Cemeteryhas been vandalised.“The damaged signs and plaques are being
stored at Thornton Garden of Rest and may beused again in the future.”

‘free to a good home’ and that’s why weare trying to take as many as possible.“We are only a very small organisation but
we do what we can – and we will contactpeople and warn them what could happen.”Animal fighting and baiting has been
banned for 180 years but has continued asan illegal activity. On its website, Gumtree says it ‘closely

FOOTBALLERS may sometimes getcriticised by fans for not running hardenough – but in a new soccer crazesweeping across Sefton it is actually inthe rules that players have to walk! The game is aimed at older players
and is organised by David Hearity, 42,who has started his own businesscalled Footy Walk. The five–a–side matches have
proved a hit with players over the ageof 50 and take place at NethertonActivity Centre and the former BootleStadium. The rules of FootyWalk are the same
as regular football, the only differencebeing if someone breaks into a jog orsprint the referee will blow up for afree kick.David, who is also a swimming
coach, believes it offers a number ofhealth benefits, with it not only givingparticipants a chance to exercise butthe slower pace of the matches meansit reduces the likelihood of injuries. He said: “It gives older guys a chance
to make friends and get active.Instead of going to the pub to socialise
they can get outdoors and enjoy thegame.“People really seem to like it and it’s
starting to kick off – excuse the pun!”It is becoming so popular that David
is now looking to offer sessions inother parts of Sefton. He added: “It’s competitive but not
too serious and it’s actually a goodworkout.“It is hard to resist the temptation to
start running but if this happens thereferee will blow up! One of players isaged 76 and another uses crutches.“It is a good laugh but it can be quite
tough. I’ve played it myself and I’vebroken a sweat!”Footy Walk is run in conjunction
with the Feelgood Factory. Sessionsare run at Netherton Activity Centreevery Friday from noon and at BootleStadium at 5.30pm.

A SOLICITOR in Bootle has come up with anunusual way to help youngsters develop theirfootballing skills – by letting them kick balls athis face!Kevin Donoghue has put up large ‘target’
signs at the Activity for All sports stadium, withhis head in the middle, as a way for children toimprove their shooting accuracy. It is part of a new sponsorship deal between
his firm, Donoghue Solicitors, and the MaguireAvenue based sports facility.Activity for All is based at the former Bootle
Stadium and recently unveiled a wide–scalerevamp to the inside of the centre.Kevin said: “I grew up round the corner from
‘Bootle Stadium’, as it was then known, and
enjoyed played football on these pitches as alad.“I wanted to do something to support the next
generation of footballers.Bootle Stadium is now run by Activity for All,
a community interest company, which meansthat any profits are re–invested in the facility.“My firm is in St Hugh’s House, on Stanley
Road, so by sponsoring the centre we are ableto help our local community.“The reason for the light–hearted signs was
to encourage people to play at the pitches, hone their skills, and have some fun at myexpense.“I will be encouraging the Donoghue
Solicitors five–a–side team to use the targetsigns, but warn them not to kick the ball toohard!”[email protected]

Re: Article in Champion (March4) praising Adactus housinggroup for paying for trips forchildren and residents on Prideof Sefton 2.Let us not forget that this is the
same Adactus that right now isdemolishing The Priory pub inLitherland, against very strongopposition from the localcommunity.Indeed, it is thought that it is
being done specifically to spitethe community because theyopposed Adactus’ planningapplication to build flats andhouses on the site of The Priory. It is something to think about
before handing out plaudits
such as ‘good old Adactus’ – noteverybody in Litherland wouldagree. As a final thought; Adactus
have gone ahead with thedemolition of The Priory, despite having twice beenrefused planning permission tobuild housing on the site.I wonder if that planning
permission will now beforthcoming, after this blatantattempt to suck up to thecommunity and SeftonCouncil?
J Clark,Litherland
Before praising Adactus, don’t forget the Priory
I saw a resident that lives inJubilee Road on Crosby onSaturday, February 28 trying toreach a high branch of a tree fromoutside his property. It soon became obvious what the
man was trying to do once Ilooked up at the tree. There was a bird hanging and
trapped and unable to fly.Despite the man’s attempts he
was unable to reach the branchand free the bird.I don’t know who the man
eventually contacted, I assume itwas the RSPB or the RSPCA buteventually the poor stricken bird
was freed from it’s horrificposition.I didn’t intervene because there
was nothing I could of done tohelp with the rescue.I would like to congratulate the
man on his attempts and didn’tgive up on the poor bird.It just shows there are good
people in this world that careabout nature and won’t give up ona distressed or injured creature. It would be nice to know the
outcome of this rescue.

Freeing bird trapped intree shows there are somegood people in this world
I was born and brought up in Lydiate, in afamily of lifelong cyclists.I visit friends and family here regularly.I read on the front page of the February 11
edition that ‘Cyclists are being urged totake more care on country roads, after acyclist from Maghull died in Down Hollandwhen his bicycle was in collision with a farmvehicle.’This is a terrible accident and my thoughts
are with the families of both the cyclist andthe driver, following this tragedy.I would like to ask whoever ‘urged cyclists
to take more care’, why not also urge driversof all vehicles to take more care? Pointingout only cyclists seems to placeunreasonable responsibility on cyclists.
Diane Brown,Derbyshire
Drivers shouldtake care too
I enjoy Jim Sharpe’s column and his referenceto the new speed signs struck a chord.I live in Balmoral Drive in Churchtown, a
fairly long straight road now in the new 20mphzone.Before the new restrictions the road, at times,
was a bit of a racetrack, but now we’re limitedto 20mph – it still is.I would like to know from the person whose
idea this was, what is the benefit to us of theseschemes, and importantly, how much has itcost us? As you say, how will it be policed?I remember not long ago Bentham’s Way,
where Dobbies is, was made a 40 zone becauseit was admitted that the original 30 could notbe policed properly. What chance is there to cover who knows how
many smaller roads?Cheers Jim, keep on writing.

I could not agree more with J Lucas (Championletters) regarding the council spendingtaxpayers’ money on useless road signs andthen wring their hands over having no moneyto spend on essential services. The police will not enforce these speed limits
and any driver with a modicum of commonsense would not be driving more than 20 milesan hour down the side roads even if they could. The drivers who will drive fast down these
roads are the type of people who will ignore thespeed limit anyway so signs will make nodifference at all.Is it possible that the number 20 indicates the
IQ of those councillors who allowed this tohappen and the local officials. who did it?I know some people will not agree with me
and I might have got it wrong and the the 20indicates the combined intelligence not theindividual intelligence of the individualsconcerned. If so I apologise for my mistake.

I visited Sefton in the early 1970s, and itimpressed me so much with its beautifulseafront, parks, gardens and warm communityspirit and friendly people that I chose to movehere.I had Great Expectations. In the novel, the betrothed of Miss Havisham
takes her money, her heart and herexpectations and deserts her, leaving her tostagnate, her family business to collapse andher beautiful home to turn to ruins.Do we want this for our community? We have seen our beautiful parks and gardens
left to decay due to lack of care. The council cannot do everything with less
and less budget. It is up to us to stop the rot. Start believing in
your community and what we want from it.There are some in the community who are
trying their best. Two local groups havedonated some money to this cause, but peopleare needed who are willing to give some oftheir time and energy and sometimes get dirty,to help. Not all people are gardeners but there are
those who can and they are always willing togive advice and direction – I warn yougardening can become addictive!Crosby and Waterloo in Bloom are a steering
group, who help and advise other groups andthe public and run free gardening and floraldisplay competitions. They are currently looking for more members
to assist in their role of helping run these eventsand advising those who need help.

A MAN from Litherland who was caughtsmuggling cannabis into a Young OffendersInstitution had a suspended sentence hangingover him at the time, a court has heard.Sentencing 19–year–old Aaron Bech to 40
weeks detention, Judge Thomas Teague, QC,said that it had been a “flagrant” breach of thesuspended sentence.“You have left the court with no option but to
send you into custody and activate thesuspended sentence,” he said.Bech, of Eltham Avenue, Litherland, had
pleaded guilty to conveying a prohibited articleinto Hindley YOI on December 9 last year.Edmund Haygarth, prosecuting, told
Liverpool Crown Court that while visiting a
prisoner at Hindley, Bech was seen to pass anitem and this was found to be skunk cannabisand tobacco, which had a value within prisonof £40.When arrested and interviewed Bech said he
had run up a £150 debt which he told would bewiped out if he took the items into the prison.Mr Haygarth pointed out that was similar to
the story he gave when arrested last July forbeing concerned in supplying cannabisinvolving a cannabis farm.Paul Lewis, defending, said that Bech’s family,
who blame themselves for him getting introtrouble, were supporting him.He had felt more comfortable with his peer
group than taking the opportunities offeredhim but while in custody on remand had hadtime to reflect. When asked why he had done itBech said he “just did not think”, said MrLewis. “He now sees he has to think.”

protect items by making them uniquelytraceable to help police quickly identify stolenproperty.Once applied, SmartWater is almost
impossible to remove and can only be seenunder ultraviolet light.OVH now uses this product as standard on all
its boilers, with households across Sefton beingoffered the opportunity to mark all theirvaluables with the clear solution and detractthieves further by placing a warning sticker intheir window. The housing company has also provided
training sessions to local police and fundedspecial UV torches to officers so they can stop

THE good news is that I’m smoking again!I’m well aware that few people will share my
pleasure – and indeed I regret that I didn’t takethe opportunity to pack it in once and for all.But the fact of the matter is that when I was
laid low with the flu I not only simply didn’twant to smoke, but in any case, after one or twoexploratory puffs I found that I simply couldnot – the very whiff of smoke set me offcoughing and wheezing. Not a good idea. The trouble was I decided to treat cigarettes
rather like Noah treated doves in his ark.Every few days I tried to light up – and only
when it became possible at least to try did Ithink I might even be on the road to recovery.I was childishly delighted – much as Noah
must have been when the dove returned withan olive twig or whatever in its beak.I rather suspect that I was somewhat poorlier
than I chose to admit to myself, and I am stillconvalescing, but at least now I am feeling alittle better and more like my old self day byday. Some good has come out of the episode
though – I have decided to cut my cigaretteconsumption, which must do my health, aswell as my pocket, some good surely?Mind you, I cannot understand is why people
find it so hard to quit smoking. Many years ago I decided to stop smoking, not
for health reasons but simply because of theexpense.I did too. For something like a year I did not
smoke. And certainly I saved quite a lot ofmoney which, unhappily, I spent on the demondrink instead.Which very nearly killed me.A specialist, on my one–and–only period in
hospital, told me that I must cut my drinking –a lot – or I would be dead “in months ratherthan years” – which is a sobering thought initself. So I stopped drinking (now half my lifetime
ago) without the help proffered to me from allsides of my hospital bed.Tell you what though – if I did decide to pack
in smoking again, the last thing I’d evenconsider would be taking up e–cigarettes.Quite apart from looking absurd, they are in
any case banned from exactly the same placesas ‘the real thing’ – trains, buses, pubs – so noadvantage there, and are full of all kinds ofjunk with e–numbers upon which the jury stillseems to be out as to their consequences.Anyway, one of my most treasured
possessions is a brass Zippo lighter given to meas a present by my late brother manyChristmases ago and that is a most powerful, ifstupid, reason to keep smoking. In fact, brother George did stop smoking
himself – and look what happened to him.Anyway, on a brighter note, my
Norfolk–based motor cruiser ‘Manxman’ isherself recovering now from revarnishing ofher topsides, and a ‘touch–up’ to herpaintwork as well. She also had to undergo her Boat Safety
Scheme examination – so she should befighting fit (and newly–beautified) for anotherseason afloat.Within weeks I hope collie dogs Tina and
Cinders and I will be afloat on the first of our2015 cruises. And hopefully also, this year I will not get
marooned down there – though certainly I canthink of many worse places in which to get lost!
One stupidreason tokeep smoking

OWNERS of the Longton Hall Farm butchers are excited to announce they have taken over another shop and will turn it into a fruit and vegetable store, which will open on Thursday 12th March - just in time for Mother’s Day!
Stephen Porter and Stephen Banks, who both run the butchers at the Strand Shopping Centre, have leased the unit next door.
Longton Hall Farm has been open for seven years and has attracted loyal customers from the local area with their wide range of delicious meats.
They are hoping for similar success with the fruit and vegetable shop, with the food being sourced locally.
The pair have also hired four new members of staff and employed local people in doing so to further boost the local economy.
The two Stephens, who have 60 years of experience between them, have bucked the trend by opening a new store with so many store closures in Bootle.
The town was named as one of the worst in the
North West for empty shops so it’s positive to see a new fruit and vegetable store opening up at the Strand Shopping Centre.
Most recently, Tesco Metro, also based at the Strand, announced it will close down so a new shop at the centre is a welcomed boost.
Stephen Porter said: “We have taken a lease on the shop next door to the butchers so we have high hopes and are looking forward to the future.
“We are locally sourcing our fruit and vegetables and have hired local people to help run it which is positive.”

When it comes to determination and focus the headteacher at The
Hawthorne’s, Michael Taylor, has a successful career in business to keep him on track.
Mr Taylor, who took up his post at the school last October, has a reputation for raising standards but insists any transformation is always the result of a team effort.
“A background in business is a real asset. It helps you to see things with a different set of eyes and gives you a wider vision,” said Mr Taylor.
“I think it also helps you see the value in team work – I’m a great believer in teams with a common purpose and have no time for senior managers with no people skills and an ‘us and them’ attitude.
“We have a fantastic team here at The Hawthorne’s and every member is dedicated to making sure our pupils have the best possible education with the best possible outcome,” he said.
A Chemistry graduate, Mr Taylor came to teaching later in life after running a multi- million pound software
company. He trained on the graduate teacher programme and was accepted on to the Future Leaders scheme during his fi rst year as a qualifi ed teacher.
His fi rst senior leadership role was as deputy head at Park High School in Stanmore, London. He was also Vice Principal at Westfi eld Community Technology College in Watford, deputy head at Northolt High School in London, and Associate Principal at Oasis Academy Oldham.
Mr Taylor’s two daughters are at university and his son is at Sandhurst. He won a scholarship to the City of London School and he’s passionate about fi rst class teaching for every child:
“As well as giving me a good education, City of London taught me that it is just as important to acquire skills which set you up for life, such as self-confi dence, the ability to deal with people and being able to speak and write clearly and persuasively. That’s what I want for our pupils at The Hawthorne’s. I want to help create resilient and confi dent young people who can go out into the world and achieve their ambitions.”

From day one at The Hawthorne’s School pupils are encouraged to aim high and dream big.
Former Royal Marine Commando and aspiring Paralympian, Andrew Grant, was guest speaker at the school’s presentation evening.
And every month pupils attend assemblies given by professionals throughout a range of industries.
Assistant headteacher Rachel Prout said: “We talk to pupils about what they aspire to and bring in speakers from the world of work.
“Every month we bring in people to talk in assembly about their careers to introduce them to different jobs; to talk about what’s out there and the route to university or college.”
The school has brought in young media professionals and industry leaders along with inspirational people from the local community.
Andrew, an Iraq and Afghan war veteran, was invited to The Hawthorne’s to present the awards during an evening to celebrate the pupils’ success over the last year.
He told the pupils: “There is no ceiling on what you can do in life.”
Andrew, a former pupil at St Wilfrid’s High School, said he was inspired to join the Royal Marines at the age of 17 after seeing a poster in school that said: “99.9 percent
need not apply.” He said he was always driven by wanting to be the
best he could be. Following life threatening injuries after being blown up by a bomb detonated by a trip wire in Afghanistan, Andrew had his lower right leg amputated.
He won two gold medals at the Invictus Games and is hoping to represent Britain in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“It’s a real privilege to have been asked to the school. These are great children and they already have lots of self-belief which makes my job, trying to inspire them, much easier,” said Andrew.
Staff at The Hawthorne’s set very high expectations of pupils, based on the school’s three key values of ‘aspiration,’ ‘community’ and ‘excellence.’
The whole school ethos is based on nine habits around those values including strive hard, plan well, respect for others, look the part – act the part, being excellent, beyond my best. Pupils are also encouraged to take pride in themselves, their school and their community.
Headteacher at The Hawthorne’s, Michael Taylor said: “Andrew epitomises the ethos we have at The Hawthorne’s. His personal motto of “always be the best you can” is one we use in school and his determination to succeed despite adversity is a vital lesson to our students.”
The Hawthorne’s has developed a pioneering system to make sure new pupils cope well with the move from primary to high school.
Youngsters joining the school in September will be part of the Foundations section, exclusively for Year 7 and 8 pupils.
Foundations is a tailor made academic, creative and expressive programme. At the end of Year 8 students graduate to the senior school and start their GCSEs – giving them an extra year to get the best possible grades.
Samantha Renshaw, progress leader for Foundations at The Hawthorne’s said: “Our Year 7 pupils have often joined us from very small primary schools. We pride ourselves in being able to continue the calm, nurturing environment of a primary school. It’s like a school within a school.”
Throughout the two years in Foundations staff work closely with each child – teasing out their strengths, raising their aspirations and identifying any areas where they may need additional support.
But the school also encourages leadership and helps pupils to take on responsibilities for themselves and others. Pupils take turns in being “leaders” who organise line-ups in the playground, check uniform and hand out books in class.
Assistant headteacher Rachel Prout said: “When
they line up at the start of the day and for breaks and lunchtimes it’s the pupils themselves who organise the lines and it’s done quickly and in an orderly fashion.
“It’s very much about promoting leadership qualities and confi dence in pupils,” she added.
The Hawthorne’s also works very closely with surrounding primaries so pupils are familiar with the school long before they join in Year 7. There are regular taster days with exciting themes like solving crimes and making rockets. There is also a summer school for Year 6 pupils.
The Hawthorne’s is a small school with an academic focus. Class sizes are small with a maximum of 24 and even fewer pupils in English and mathematics.
The Hawthorne’s takes children from a wide range of primary schools and currently has pupils from Linacre, Lander Road, Springwell Park, St Philip’s, English Martyrs, Thomas Gray, All Saints, Christ Church, Bedford Road, St Robert Bellarmine, St Elizabeth’s, Star of the Sea and St Monica’s.
To fi nd out more about the admissions process or to arrange a tour of the school, please call 0151 922 3798 or E-mail: [email protected]
Hawthorne’s staff deliver bite-sized lessons to St. Philip’s Primary
As part of the on-going work to forge close links with surrounding primary schools, staff have been to St Philip’s this week to offer a taste of life in high school.
A team of teachers has devised a programme, designed to provide primary students with an insight into high school life and the many opportunities that The Hawthorne’s has to offer.
Following an introductory assembly to Year 5 and 6 pupils, teachers delivered taster sessions of the lessons taught at The Hawthorne’s.
Pupils were given the opportunity to trial out experiments with Mr Lynch, learn Spanish with Ms Gilson, develop sophisticated team skills with Mr Ridge and play an exciting Brain Box literacy activity with Ms Eccleston!
The sessions went down very well with the youngsters who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and many pupils expressed an interest in joining The Hawthorne’s in Year 7.

The foundations programme at The Hawthorne’s is aimed at helping pupils move easily from primary to high school.
Foundations is a school within a school with its own playground and specially trained staff to ensure a smooth and effective transition.
During the two years in Foundations pupils take all the national curriculum subjects – English, English literature, mathematics, science, history, Spanish, RE, computer studies, design technology, art, PE, music and PSHE – but they complete the programme in two years rather than three.
That means pupils begin studying for their GCSEs in Year 9 giving them an extra year to get the best possible
grades.Although The Hawthorne’s is a small school it provides a
wide range of GCSE options. Along with English language and literature, maths, science, history and geography, there is also Spanish, French, psychology, business studies, graphic products, design and technology, PE, art, PHSE, drama and music.
Staff at The Hawthorne’s put a great deal of emphasis on students continuing their studies when they leave the school. They follow the progress of all of their pupils for three years after their graduation from senior school. Last year more than 98% of Year 11 leavers went on to further education.
This year’s GCSE results will be the bestThe Hawthorne’s School is on target for its best
ever GCSE results, according to headteacher, Michael Taylor.
Mr Taylor is confi dent that more students will achieve the government-recognised standard of 5 A*- C grades, including English and maths, than in any other year.
“The best thing I can give our pupils is a set of good GCSE results. You have to know what it is you want to achieve - everything else is secondary – and you have to be quite ruthless about it,” he said.
“This year our Year 11 students will get excellent GCSE results, which will be the best ever for the school, and Hawthorne’s will be the high school of choice for the local community,” he added.
Last year Hawthorne’s pupil Jamie-Louise Price achieved an A* in English, despite sitting the exam in hospital, on a drip after suffering from a kidney illness. She also achieved 5As, 3Bs and 3Cs.
Jamie-Louise from Litherland was one of many who
received outstanding GCSE results.Along with her were triplets Sophie, Liam and Louise
Cowling who are also from Litherland.Sophie achieved 6As, 4Bs and 1C. She’s now
studying A’ levels at South Sefton College and wants to train as a midwife.
Liam achieved a merit in BTech Sport along with 2Bs and 3Cs. He’s hoping to become a sports coach.
Louise achieved 2A*s, 5As and 2Bs. She wants to make her name on the West End and is currently studying Musical Theatre at the Liverpool Media Academy.
Other pupils who earned top grades were Laura Thomas: 1A*,8As, 2Bs; Liam McNabb: 3A*s, 6As and 2Bs; Lauren Coady: 5A*s, 4As, 1B and 1C; Louise Davison 4A*s, 6As and 1B; Matthew Parry: 3A*s, 5As and 2Bs; Callum Hall 2A*s, 8As and 1B and Jamie Edwards: 2A*s, 5As and 3Bs.
A small school with big opportunities

Friends forge strong links with people of Bootle
The Friends of The Hawthorne’s is a vibrant group committed to nurturing strong links between the school and the wider community.
Last month the group organised a Harry Potter themed event in the school library for pupils at local primary schools.
The group is also planning to host social events and cultural opportunities for students, families and the wider community and is organising after school cookery classes, a race night and a community coffee morning for older residents.
Anyone in the local community is welcome to join – you don’t need to be a parent or carer of a child in school. For more information contact Shirley Mullany on 0151 922 3798

It might be true that nothing good ever comes easy but staff at The Hawthorne’s believe work and play go hand-in-hand to make well-rounded young people.
Pupils benefi t from a wide range of extra curricular activities from eco club and gardening to drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
The school day starts at 8.30 with fi ve hour-long lessons fi nishing at 2.50pm. After this there is a range of academic and creative lessons until the end of the school day at 3.50pm.
Sport and drama are important elements of the school
day and extra-curricular activities. There are regular fi xtures in football, basketball, netball, badminton, cricket, rounders, athletics and cross-country. There are also well-received school performances including last year’s adaptation of Aladdin played to an audience of staff, governors, family and friends.
All Foundations pupils are offered a free outdoor residential pursuit course at the Brathay Educational Trust based at Ambleside in the Lake District and pupils in the Senior School use the centre for their Duke of Edinburgh activities.
Lots of work andplenty of play Hawthorne’s pupils highlight the dangers of demolition
Youngsters at The Hawthorne’s School have been taking part in a competition to raise awareness of the dangers of demolition sites.
Derelict buildings close to the Fernhill Road School are about to be demolished to make way for a new housing development.
And Beech Group demolition team, who are carrying out the work, asked pupils to design a poster warning youngsters of the dangers of the site.
The company provided £25 gift vouchers as prizes for the competition and Arthur Marley, Operations Director and Alistair Buckley, Project Manager came into school to present them to the winners.
Alistair said: “We wanted to involve pupils at The Hawthorne’s as the school is close to the work we’re carrying out. We thought the competition would be a good way to get them interested and think about how dangerous demolition sites can be.”
Foundations progress leader and science teacher Samantha Renshaw, who helped organise the poster competition in school, said she was delighted by the number and quality of entrants.
“The competition really caught the pupils’ imagination,” she said. “They came up with some great creative ideas with a real impact.”
Below: Alistair Buckley and Arthur Marley from Beech Group with Hawthorne’s teacher Samantha Renshaw and Hawthorne’s pupils (Left to Right) Jack McGiveron (Year 8), Ellie- Louise Clarke (Year 7), Abbie Wooliscroft (Year 7) and Jessica Webster (Year 8).

Basketball girls the best in South Sefton
The girls’ basketball teams
have done particularly well in the South Sefton competition this season. Year 9 won their fi nal against Hillside with a convincing score line of 16-34, whilst Year 8 had victories over Hillside and St Ambrose Barlow in the round robin competition to clinch gold. Year 7 played their fi rst ever competitive matches and fi nished in second place.
Sport is an important part of life at The Hawthorne’s.There are regular fi xtures in football, basketball,
netball, cricket, badminton, rounders, athletics and cross-country and pupils can also take-up karate.

House prices this year — I’d just like to highlight some research that we have found over the past couple of months.
People are trying to predict what will happen with property prices over the next few months and there has been quite a variety of opinions that have been given across the market. We’re going to give you our opinion based on some of the statistics that have been produced by some high profi le research companies. This research conducted confi rms the theory that there seems to be a direct link between unemployment fi gures and how much property value’s increase.
The research carried out by AXA Real Estate shows, that depending on what the 6 month period was prior to whether fl uctuation in unemployment rises or decreases was quite astounding. It indicated that if you were to buy a property when employment has increased over the previous 6 months, then your property will rise in value by 18% on average for over the next 5 years.
However, if you were to buy a property after 6 months of falling unemployment, your property would increase by an average value of 55% during the whole 5 year period. What we can assume from AXA’s research, that your capital growth expectations should be 3 times faster over the next 5 years based on the information that will be provided by the DWP for the amount of adults claiming JSA over the previous 6 month period.
There are several things we have previous spoke about which we believe will have a positive effect on house prices this year, but one of the main driving factors will be the direct link to historical employment statistics to capital growth. That said we do think it will take a while for wages to catch up to assist fi rst time buyers to support the bottom of the housing ladder.

ensemble for a couple of numbers. I have beenin shows with songs before, but I have neverbeen in a proper musical. I am thrilled to bepart of it.”
The show includes the famous songs: I Get AKick Out of You, Anything Goes and You’re theTop and Jane commented: “Anything Goes is amachine that creates happiness and it alwaysworks and makes you feel happy. It has somewonderful music in it.“At the curtain call everyone feels happy no

SEFTON and West Lancashireretailer, 06 Vauxhall, with sitesin Ormskirk and Skelmersdale,is delighted to announce it isnow able to offer its customersthe use of a Nitrogren TyreInflation Machine. The NTIM takes air out of
vehicle tyres and replaces itwith the gas, making it safer todrive. The gas will also ensure tyres
have the correct pressure and,in turn, save on fuel economy asunder–inflated tyres causeresistance.

A CAR NUT somewhere has justbought the entire set ofdevelopment blueprints for theAustin Metro off the internet. On the one hand, I’m a tiny bit
envious of whoever’s justsnapped up this intriguing bit ofBritish Leyland history – imaginebeing able to go to a car show andtell your chums you own all thediagrams necessary to put anentire car back into production. In a way, you’d own an entire
national motoring institution, butdon’t even think about using theblueprints to bring the poor oldMetro back from the dead.Largely because nobody in theirright mind would buy one.It was a great car in its day, but
even if Princess Diana’ssupermini of choice did somehowsneak past the Euro NCAP safetyboffins into today’s showroomsyou’d immediately dismiss itbecause it’d be 30 years out ofdate. None of British Leyland’sofferings are being useden–masse any more.Unless, of course, you get the
train into work. If you ever usethe Wigan to Southport or Kirkbyto Southport lines, then chancesare you’ll be all too familiar withBL’s handiwork. You might not know it but the
Class 142 Pacer is the AustinMetro’s distant cousin, becauseboth were developed by the thenstate–run motor manufacturer.
Like its four–wheeled relative, the Pacer wasn’t bad in its 1980sheyday – it actually replacedsome truly ancient railway relicsdating back to the 1950s. Thedifference is that while the Metrowas pensioned off 17 years ago,the now utterly outdated Pacer isstill chugging its way around theBritish rail network every singleday, making commutersmiserable. My colleagues at the sharp end
of The Champion’s news pageshave for the last couple of weeksbeen calling for the Pacer to begiven its marching orders, echoing calls already made bySouthport MP John Pugh. I’dagree, because if the
powers–that–be are seriousabout convincing petrolheads likeme to give up cars even for asingle trip to Manchester they’regoing to have do better than awheezy, clattery, uncomfortableold jalopy of a train badlywrapped up in bodywork stolenfrom a Leyland National bus.The Austin Metro is a car we
Brits should be proud of, but if Itold you to give up your brandnew Fiesta for one you’d tell mewhere to get off. It’s the same with trains. You’re
not going to convince a singlemotorist to change tack if the bestyou’ve got are those infernalPacers. David is the news editor ofClassic Car Weekly.
Some classic cars shouldstay firmly in the past
Owning the blueprints to anAustin Metro is far better thanactually owning the car itself

Sandal 34Firwood Waterloo 25
HAVING hauled their back into the gamefrom 27–3 down to get within two points, aconverted try in the final minutes by thehome side who denied the visitors even alosing bonus point as they went down 34–27away to second in National Three NorthSandal.Without a strong presence in the lineout
with both Jack Weir and Ryan McKay absentit was always going to be tough due tolimited options in that area and certainly inthe first half they paid the price.Sandal rushed into an early lead and were
17–3 up by half time through tries from
Simon Frewin, James Ellar and Joe Bedfordwith Mark Pease slotting one conversion to apenalty for Waterloo from Liam Reeve.Pease and Frewin added a further ten
points from two tries immediately after therestart but from then on Waterloo camemuch more into the game. From play down the blindside and a neat
grubber through from John Cunningham,James O’Brien showed some slick footballskills to hack the ball on for a try wide out.A set play across the backline created the
opportunity for Matt Crow to cross for asecond. Reeve hit the conversion and addeda penalty before it was Crow again workingoff the same earlier move who popped up togo over for the third, Reeve’s conversion
putting the visitors to within two points withjust ten minutes remaining. At this stage the result could have gone
either way but in the end Sandal re–groupedand got Joe Bedford over to seal the win,Pease conversion denying Waterloo whatwould have been a deserved bonus point.Director of rugby Jan Van Deventer said:
“It is the closest we have ever run Sandal inrecent seasons and shows how far we havecome over the past season.“We are disappointed to lose but looking at
the second half performance there are a lotof positives we can take from this game.”Waterloo now take a week’s break before
returning to league action at home to Wirralon March 21.
Weakened lineout tells as Waterloofail to haul back early points deficit
Stamford 0Marine 1
MARINE returned from Lincolnshire onSaturday with all three points, as Karl Clair’s51st minute goal gave them victory atStamford’s Zeeco Stadium to record back toback league wins for the first time this season, writes Dave McMillan.A dry pitch and strong breeze led to a game of
few chances, the Mariners having the best ofthose in terms of working the goalkeeper withStamford rarely looking like breaching aresolute visiting defence.Tom McGowan had an early chance for the

Litherland Remyca 1Atherton Collieries 3
THERE was no joy for Remycaagainst high flying Atherton Collson a frustrating day at LitherlandSports Park. There was much anticipation
ahead of this North WestCounties League Division Onegame with the visitors being inblistering form this season.
Remyca had most of the earlyplay and took the lead on 28minutes when Louis Austinblasted an outstanding goal pastthe Colls keeper.Atherton were awarded a
penalty on 37 minutes when thereferee adjudged centre backSteve King had made contact withJordan Cover and the spot kickwas duly dispatched with aplombby Mark Ayres.
The lack of composure was ondisplay again on 44 minutes whenMark Truffas gave Atherton thelead with a free–kick that foundit’s way into the bottom corner ofthe net.A response was needed after the
half time break from Remyca buttry as they may they could makelittle headway against anorganised and resolute Athertonoutfit who defended gamely.
On 71 minutes the Colls rightback, Kristian Holt, was dealt asecond yellow card and dismissedwhich gave Remyca a glimmer ofhope. However, Colls dug in and it was
they who were able to seal thegame on 82 minutes whenfollowing a poor back pass, strikerGareth Peet intercepted the balland ran on to fire into the net.

Bootle 4West Didsbury & Chorlton 1
A DOUBLE from James McGrane, a screamerfrom Steven Hoy and a penalty fired Bootleto a comfortable victory at West Didsbury &Chorlton, writes Connor O’Neill.Bootle returned to Chorlton looking for a
repeat performance from four weeks ago, when they produced one of their bestperformances of the season to book their placein the semi–finals of the Men United cup.On that day Josh Hamilton was the stand out
performer for the Bucks – fast forward fourweeks and it was James McGrane who was theBucks stand out man.The winger scored twice in the second half to
help get his side back to winning ways after lastweekend’s disappointing draw at Maine Road.Despite the emphatic score line Bootle started
the game slowly and failed to create many clearcut chances. The best chance of the opening half hour fell
to the hosts – Gary Lilley’s through ballreleased David Short, but forward could onlychip over from the edge of the box.Four minutes later the hosts were made to pay
as Steven Hoy pounced on a loose ball insidehis own half – before driving into the Didsburyhalf and releasing a shot from 30–yards outwhich flew into the top corner of the net.Twenty minutes into the second half and
Bootle doubled their lead after Josh Hamiltonwas pulled back by Mark Rogers in theDidsbury box leaving referee Phil Dermot withno option but to point to the penalty spot.Hamilton picked himself up and tucked awaythe penalty.Four minutes later and Bootle added a third
with a goal that Barcelona would have beenproud of. Steven Hoy found Hamilton whoturned before releasing Kieran Haligan on theleft hand side.Haligan crossed for James McGrane who
finished first time inside the six–yard box.Two minutes later, and Didsbury pounced on
a lack of concentration in the Bootle defencewhen they pulled a goal back. NicolaosEvangelinos broke through the Bucks defencebut was stopped in his tracks by a superb tackleby David Taylor – but the ball fell perfectly toDavid Short who finished first time past JackMano in the Bootle goal. The goal was only to be a mere consolation as
with four minutes of normal time remaining,James McGrane made sure the points would bereturning to Liverpool – when the wingerscored his second of the game.McGrane rose highest inside the box to head
Luke Atkinson’s cross into the bottom cornerof the net. The goal was McGrane’s tenth ofthe season – which is an excellent return for thewinger who is in his debut season for theBucks.

Traditional Estate Agent Auction House Private Cash Buyer A1 PropertySpeed ✗ No timescales – sales typically many
months or years. Many houses withdrawn from market as not sold.
✗ As and when auctions take place, only a coule of times a year. Long time to wait if it fails to sell.
✗ Often say cash buyer but then reliant on finance, or try to sell to third party, often results in long delays.
✓ We aim to complete in 4 weeks.
Costs ✗ Additional fees – withdrawal fees, marketing fees, upfront costs – some chargeable whether the property is sold or not.
✗ Entry fees and legal fees payable upfront, costs money even if fails to sell.
✗ Sometimes upfront fees or ‘valuation fees’. Sometimes hidden charges or restrictive long term contracts.
✓ Free valuation.
No upfront fee, no withdrawal fee.
We pay all costs.
Pricing Strategy
✗ Often over promise on sale price to get you to instruct them, ahead of other local agents. Over valuing limits the interest in a property and is the main reason why properties fail to sell.
✗ Insist on low reserve prices to attract interest. You are committed to sell even if unhappy with sale price above reserve.
✗ Most offer 60% to 70% of market value. May pull out if a better opportunity is agreed elsewhere.
✓ Realistic ‘offers over’ pricing strategy creates maximum interest and makes your property stick out against competing properties
Buyers ✗ Not checked. Sent to view, even if they have a house to sell or have not got finance. This is to show ‘progress’ so you do not change agent.
✗ Buyers expect rock bottom prices. Large numbers of properties do not sell on the auction day. Buyers believe property was auctioned because of desperation / problem with property.
✗ Unregulated. ✓ You will be dealing with the decision maker, we can make you an offer within hours.
Support ✗ Tired, dated and ineffective approach. Do not work around modern busy lifestyles. Use the same lazy methods used as before the Credit Crunch. Reactive, not proactive.
✗ None. ✓ Often pay all legal fees and help to manage the solicitors progress. ✓ Highly trained staff.
Modern methods, we can deal with banks and building society on your behalf.
Proactive, not reactive.
Properties ✗ Generally only help sell the best houses in the most popular areas, everything else struggles to sell.
✗ Mostly investment, commercial and problem properties which would fail to sell with an agent.
✓ Can buy all types of properties in all areas, even problem properties. ✓ Any types even those in poor condition
or have struggled to sell previously.

Don’t just take our word for it... here’s what some of our many happy
clients have to say about us...A1 Properties recently bought my mother, Barbara’s home, and they could not have been better. They gave my mother a fair price and handled everything from start to finish very efficiently.
Derek from Banksbarn
Mr Bell of A1 Properties who recently bought my home helped me through what was a very trying time, he paid the price he promised for my house and was very helpful at all times.
Susan from Alderley
When A1 Properties bought my home in 2007 they were very quick and professional and paid what has turned out to be a very good price.
Alistair from Castlehey
A1 Properties bought our house in 2005 and we rented it back, since then they have carried out refurbishments and modernisation and we could not be happier. They paid a very good price and with their help it was completely stress free.
John & Pat from Ferndale
Extract recently printed in a local paper. Buy-to-let landlords sometimes get a bad press, so I would like to publically thank Colin Bell and his team from A1 Properties for all their assurances and help during their recent purchase of my home.Colin agreed a price he would pay when he first came to see the house and kept his word to the penny. The sale whent through during the terrible time that the property and mortgage markets began to go haywire.I was very worried that because other houses were reducing their prices at this time that Colin may come along and drop his price so it was brilliant the way he kept his promise and his cool over the many phone calls and texts I sent to him.The sale took a bit longer than normal for him but the way things were in the mortgage market that was not surprising. So a big thank you Colin and team for all the reassurance and help and for being a man of your word. We love our new home of three weeks and are settling in very well.
