AUTHOR PROFILE Meet Alden Thompson . . .
Dr Alden Thompson is a semi-retired professor of theology, based at Walla Walla University in Washington, USA. He recently visited Australia and talked with Bookshelf about his passion for writing, teaching and the church.
QHow has your work as a teacher at Walla Walla influenced the books you have published for
general church readership?Virtually all my books have been a direct outgrowth of classroom teaching. That was especially true of the book that has proven so troublesome for some, Inspiration: Hard Questions, Honest Answers.
QAt times, your books have been considered controversial. Is this something you set out to do?
The initial impulse for each book is the desire to be helpful, not controversial. I found the response to Inspiration to be astonishing. I thought people wanted to address those issues in the Bible that were potentially troubling. Wrong. Many prefer to hear what they have always heard, even if traditional answers don’t address the actual questions.
QDo you believe that your books have changed people’s minds on the issues you have addressed?
In time, yes. But the immediate response has often been mixed. A host of people have told me that my books have enabled them to continue to be Adventists and they have expressed much gratitude. But a lesser number have admitted that my books have put their faith at risk, though such responses usually come from people who suddenly faced questions they hadn’t thought of before, but grew through their questions to solid ground. Generally, however, Adventists do not do a good job of discussing differences with each other. I would love to help the church “fix” that problem by giving members permission to see the legitimate diversity in Scripture, in the church, and in the writings of
Ellen White. My book, Beyond Common Ground is a major part of that effort.
QIn Escape From the Flames, you narrate the progressive development of Ellen White’s
understandings. Why is this an important aspect of reading her work?I believe that every passage of Scripture and all the counsels of Ellen White are best understood and applied when we see them in terms of the original time, place, and circumstances when they were written. A playful example involves Ellen White’s differing narratives on the life of John the Baptist. In 1858, she wrote that John’s life was “without pleasure. It was sorrowful and self-denying.” But in 1897 she was able to write: “John enjoyed his life of simplicity and retirement.” When I mentioned that in class for the first time, a student quipped, “You mean the more Ellen White enjoyed her walk with the Lord, the more John the Baptist enjoyed his!” Precisely. Grumpy Adventists will tell grumpy stories, joyful Adventists will tell joyful ones.
QIn retirement, you continue to be an active writer and speaker. What inspires you to continue this work?
I still continue to teach part time and hope to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. I have a great passion for Adventism and believe that it has great potential for bringing together a wide spectrum of people onto common ground as followers of Jesus.
QWhat would you like to have contributed to the church through your books and writing?
I would like to believe that what I write will have enduring value. I want to make it both safe and exciting for thoughtful people to read the Bible. And I hope that we can find a way to make it safe to read all of Ellen White’s writings from beginning to end. For that we need to provide a framework within which it is safe to see her writings as a powerful resource for scholars and believers alike.
Beyond Common Ground: Why Liberals and Conservatives Need Each OtherTo have a more complete picture of God’s truth, we need to consider different viewpoints. Liberals and conservatives don’t have to agree, nor do they have to be enemies, but that each should accept the other as sincere Christians who love God and their church.
Escape From the Flames: How Ellen White Grew from Fear to Joy—And Held Me To Do It TooThis book narrates how Ellen White escaped a fearful view of God and discovered joy in the Lord. It also explores the meaning of inspiration, looks at how prophets grow, and challenges our assumptions about Scripture and inspired writings.

FOCUSING ON THE SECOND COMING
Waiting and Longing Randy Roberts
It is time to shift our focus beyond thinking more about the when of Christ’s return to

Fulfilling God’s End-Time Mission Mark and Ernestine Finley

J N Loughborough: the last of the Adventist Pioneers Brian Strayer
Loughborough’s ministry started at age 17 and spanned seven decades as a speaker, writer, evangelist and administrator. His friendship with Ellen White did not exclude him from receiving her rebuke. And his diminutive stature did not prevent him from making enormous contributions.
The Struggle for the Prophetic Heritage
Gilbert Valentine
Discover the intriguing story of how Ellen White’s work
was contested soon after her death, and how church
and trustees worked together to ensure that her writings
endured to guide the church and bless the world.
The Unknown Prophet Delbert Baker
William Foy was an African-Amerisan minister of the
nineteenth century whom historical records had generally
overlooked. He received powerful revelations from God about
coming tribulation, judgment, and heaven awaiting those who were faithful to God. His story, ministry
and message still speaks today.
Light Bearers Richard Schwarz, Floyd Greenleaf
This is a carefully researched, contemporary history of
the Adventist Church that shows how continuity despite change, unity in diversity and
singleness of purpose amid an expanding breadth of activity have combined to produce an
Adventist world that the pioneers could never have imagined.
Tell it to the World Mervyn Maxwell

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Most of us memorised the Lord’s Prayer in our childhood and I am sure we have recited it regularly as a church prayer as well as at other times. But how many times have we stopped to really think about the words or why it was structured the way that it was? Have we become ensnared in religious formalism just like the Pharisees whom Jesus rebuked for their showy empty prayers? Are we sometimes guilty of reciting the Lord’s Prayer in words only, while missing its powerful message?
Searching for Lost Love is not a deep theological exposition of the Lord’s Prayer but rather a thoughtful look at its practical application to our everyday life. Intermingled with personal stories from his own life growing up without a father and verses penned from his own experiences, Ricardo Bentancur—who is a speaker, writer and poet, who works as the director of the International Department of Pacific Press—manages to bring to life this beautiful and powerful prayer. Drawing from the scriptural context in which the Lord’s Prayer appears, he explains how Jesus was teaching His disciples and us the fundamentals of Christianity through each section of this prayer. Each chapter leads also you further into the personal story Bentancur’s life and how he has seen it interwoven with God’s plan.
Anyone who reads Searching for Lost Love will be touched by the sincerity of the author and will come away with a deeper understanding of that beautiful prayer we all learnt years ago. It is, after all, the prayer that Jesus instructed His disciples—and that
includes us—to pray.—Sonia Knight, distribution manager, Adventist
