“YMAA Publication Center was established so that Westernerscould access the profound Oriental developments in Qi,Martial Arts, and Spiritual Cultivation. As one of the pioneersin this exchange, YMAA will continue to mark the pathbetween East and West. It is our hope that this path will helplead to a new, benevolent society.”– Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming

The key is balance.

Most of us recognize that too much of a good thing is not always good. It’sreasonable to assume the opposite is also true. According to TraditionalChinese Medicine (TCM), living in proper balance is good for health, hap-piness, and prosperity.

Health—the soundness of any living organism—may be influenced byeating properly, balanced with relaxation (mind and body), along with proper exercise.

Happiness—enjoying, giving, or indicating pleasure—may be experienced by having the essentials, balanced with knowing ourselves, being in harmony, and giving favor to friends and family.

Prosperity—attainment of the object desired; material well-being; success—may arise whenthere is a ‘little extra’ balanced with service to others.

It takes time and energy to achieve proper balance and obsessions can destroy it. The wonder-ful thing is that balance is in our control. Each of us can do it with a willing attitude.

Our mission at YMAA is to have balance in our books and DVDs and to help our customers onthe path towards balanced living.

Fiction through the eyes of

martial artistsThe senior guard looked the wildstranger up and down, taking in the shabby robe, the bare feet andthe skin beaten black by the sun.The man was little more than a wandering beggar.

“The Venerable Ananda does notgive an audience to casual visitors,”he said.

Bodhidharma had only to producethe letter of introduction written byhis master, but he did not. Insteadhe planted himself firmly before theguard. “He will see me,” he insisted.

“On what business?” the seniorguard demanded.

“No business of yours, Brother,”came the answer.

The younger guard stepped across to stand beside his comrade, whowas about to send the stranger onhis way, when Bodhidharma’s disci-ple hurried forward and spokequickly. “Brother Guards, it appearsyou have failed to recognize MasterBodhidharma! He has traveled allthe way from Pallava to meet withThe Venerable One.” He leaned closer to the senior guard, speakingin a whisper, “You're keeping him

waiting at the gate like a novice.Do you think that wise?”

The senior guard looked at thestranger once more and this timehe noticed the expanse of hardmuscle beneath the threadbarerobe. The man was built like one ofthe wrestlers who competed in thearena at Rajagriha. His bulgingforearm suggested many years ofwielding weapons, and the cal-loused fist that gripped the walk-ing staff was that of a Vajrimuktimaster, able to shatter bone as eas-ily as snapping a twig. He lookedinto the fierce black eyes and sawthat if the stranger wished toenter, two guards would not delayhim for longer than a heartbeat. Atthat instant, Bodhidharma smiledat him.

“I will escort you personally,” theguard said, hushing the objectionsof the younger guard with a frown.

“You are very kind,” Bodhidharmasaid with a gracious bow.

MARTIAL WAY AND ITS VIRTUES—Tao De GungF. J. ChuWhile the martial arts revolve around the way of personal combat, italso demands that its adherents live in accordance with a certain war-rior code of conduct and honor. The martial way promises a long andarduous journey. It is an invitation to the subordination of self, theendurance of sustained practice, and the cultivation of the body andmind, with no tolerance for self-indulgences of any kind. THE WAY OF KATA—A Comprehensive Guide to Deciphering Martial ApplicationsLawrence A. Kane and Kris WilderThe ancient masters developed kata as fault-tolerant methods to pre-serve their unique, combat-proven fighting systems. Unfortunately, they deployed a two-track system of instruction where ‘outer circle’students received modified forms with critical details or importantprinciples omitted, and the select ‘inner circle’ students would betaught okuden waza, the powerful hidden applications of kata.

This groundbreaking book unveils the methods of teaching you howto analyze your kata, to understand what it is trying to tell you. It alsohelps you to utilize your fighting techniques more effectively—both inself-defense and in tournament applications. Offers fifteen generalprinciples to identify effective techniques, and twelve discrete rules fordeciphering martial applications within your kata.

Qi theory and qigong wereapplied to the Chinese martial arts during the late Liang dynasty(A.D. 502-557). This Qigong can beclassified as either external orinternal. The external styles ener-gize the muscles in the limbs withqi so that they can manifest theirmaximum strength. This trainingalso develops the muscles. Theinternal styles believe that inorder for the physical body tomanifest its maximum power, practitioners must learn how tocirculate and build up the qi. Onlythen could the physical body beenergized effectively. This trainingfocuses on circulating and build-ing the level of qi internally. To dothis, the body must be remainrelaxed and to a degree, soft.Taijiquan belongs in this internalcategory.
