There are as many different ways to read the cards as there are decks to choose from but, for the sake of argument, I’m going to teach you mine. I am, by no means, an expert in the field and, even though I have been reading for several years, as with everything, I am still learning. It is an on-going process and anyone who says that they know everything about any kind of spiritual reading is most likely lying. For we do not know what happens beyond our physical realm.

what are tarot cards? As mentioned before, there are 78 cards in a pack. They are split into Major and Minor arcana.

Tarot cards, originally known as tarocchi, are a deck of 78 cards that, from the 15th to 18th centuries, were used as a game. From the 18th century onwards, they were adopted by mystics and occultists as a way to map the mental and spiritual pathways. Once seen as the work of the devil, there are now several tarot readers in even the smallest of towns. Perhaps you have seen one. Or perhaps you have visited a tarot reader. Perhaps you even want to try it for yourself. Some say that tarot cards see the future. Some say that they are a link to the subconscious, while others say that they show us the ups and downs of our lives and how to solve them. What they are for, and what they mean, are entirely up to you.

Each tarot card has a different picture and are a close relation to normal playing cards (There are some people who even use normal playing cards for divination and you may want to try this as well). there are 22 cards in the Major arcana, all without suits, and are represented as such: Minor arcana

•The World

The Minor Arcana are those that would be the suits in a pack of playing cards. There are 56 cards, with 14 cards in each suit. There are the court cards; King, Queen, Knight, Page/

Jack, while the the rest of the cards are numbered 1 to 10. Each card has its own image and own meaning, all of which are normally explained in any literature that comes with the pack.

the Magician

The power of male creation, creation by willpower and desire. It is the card that tells you to take action to make things happen. Do not remain idle!

the Fool

This is the card of infinite possibilities. It is the card that is outside of the systems and is represented by the number 0. It says, “I am not a number, but a free person, free to make my own choices and create my life as I see fit.”

the high priestess

The card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural and secret knowledge. The High Priestess tells you to trust your instincts.

the eMpress

The Empress is the creator, be it of life, art, romance or business. This is a maternal card, a card of strength.

the eMperor

The card of maturity, attaining the power to decide for oneself, but also the card of impatience. The Emperor is a powerful card, of gaining power through knowledge but it is also a card of corruption. Do not abuse the power.

the lovers

The Lovers is the card of choice. It may involve decisions, something which needs some thought or indeed love. It may relate to friendships and relationships, for all involve love. It can indicate new relationships or the rekindling of old ones.

the chariot

This card is one of the most difficult to define but, at it’s most basic level, it is the card of success and of winning hard fought battles. It is the card of journeys and of discovery.

strength

Strength is the card of courage and of inner strength. It may mean that you are right in a disagreement and that you need to calmly stand your ground. Or it may mean that you need to look deeper inside yourself to work on the courage you need to do the things you wish to.

the herMit

There are a number of meanings which relate to The Hermit: a time of solitude to look after yourself, your health and your affairs; a time to learn from another; a time to rethink your goals and how to achieve them.

teMperance

Temperance is the card of moderation and introspection. Perhaps there is behviour or thought processes that need moderating. Perhaps there are relationships that need to be pulled away from for a while.

death

Death does not always mean a physical death. While it can symbolise a physical death, it is more to do with endings It can be the ending of old ways and old habits and the way a person handles them.

wheel oF Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune is the card of luck and fate. The cycles of luck and fate are in your grasp so sieze opporunities as they come along.

the hierophant

The card of the wise and the ancient, of connecting with higher powers and allowing them to guide you.

justice

Justice does exactly what it says. It is the card of facts and figures, of winning a difficult situation. Justice seeks out the truth but does it to the spirit of the law, not just the letter.

the hanged Man

The card of suspension and challenges, not of death. It is time to stop being inactive and do something about chasing those dreams or whatever else you wish to do.

the devil

The Devil is about the only card that has negative connotations. It symbolises weaknesses; jealousy, hate and all other kinds of negative emotions. It symbolises slaves to negativity and, should it come up, perhaps it is time to take a look at oneself and see how you can change for the better.

the tower

The Tower, like Death, symbolises the end of something old. Unlike Death, it does not bring the promise of something new. The tower indicates upheavel, possible chaos, loss and destruction. However, with The Tower, it can be a case of “What does not kill us makes us stronger.”

the star

The Star represents harmony, tranquility and calm. It is a card that brings hope and time for renewal. Look around yourself and see what new opportunities you can take hold of. Most of all, enjoy!

the Moon

The Moon is another complex cards and, with it, comes the word”Lunatic”, as in madman or crazy genius. It can represent emotional challenges, inner turmoil and pyschic disturbance. It is up to you to look closely to see what is happening in your life and whether or not you can harness these energies.

the sun

The Sun is one of the happiest cards in the deck and represents all that is joyful, happy and full of optimism. Happiness abounds and you will be able to get over your obstacles and keep moving forwards.

judgeMent

Judgement is not the card of negativity. Judgement asks you to look within yourself and see not only your faults but also your good. It is not just a card of criticism but also a card of praise. It isn’t the end; just a pause to take a look around yourself and regroup.

the world

The World is one of the most positive cards in the deck and, as the final card in the Major Arcana, it represents completion. This is a card of wholeness, of projects being finished. Yet, while it is the end, it is also the beginning.

where can i get tarot cards FroM?

Pretty much anywhere that sells books will sell tarot cards. Normally they can be found in the Mind, Body and Spirit section of a book shop. Nearly every town has an occult store somewhere. Sometimes you have to look in the little known places or the markets to find them. Otherwise, they’re widely available from all online retailers of books (Amazon, Play.com, eBay).

There are so many different tarot decks out there that it would be impossible to list them all. I’ll include web sites that have lists of different decks although, as with such things, these lists are inexhaustible.

There are many different ways of knowing if a tarot

deck is right for you. Some people have a sense, a feeling, that they should own a certain deck. For a lot of people, they find themselves being drawn back to a certain one. If you’re looking to buy one and you find a deck which you can’t get out of your head, then that is most likely the one for you. Always trust your gut instinct because it is nearly always right!

I have several decks, but there is one that I use all of the time. It is the Gothic Tarot of the Vampires by R Minetti and Lo Scarabeo. I don’t know why I was drawn to this deck but I find that the equal balance of light and darkness in the images is extremely useful and makes reading them a lot easier. For reference, it is the deck that I shall be featuring in this article.

g e t t i n g started

So you’ve been out and you’ve found the perfect deck. You’ve sat there and admired the artwork, turning the cards over and over in your hands. You’ve read the booklet that comes with them and wondered how to make sense of it all.

Sit quietly and shuffle the cards. Some people just stop, others find they get a feeling or a sense. Again, it’s the whole gut instinct. If you get a feeling that you should stop shuffling, then do so. If you find that a card falls or “jumps” from the pack, pick it up and look closely at it. That will be one of the cards

you’re supposed to do a reading with.

For me, when it’s time to stop shuffling, I get a distinct feeling in the right hand side of my face. My jaw tenses up and I hear the word “stop” whispered in my ear. Of course, it’s different for everyone but that’s an example of how you can tell when

it’s time for you to put them down and begin to read.

The easiest way to start is to turn over just the top card. Turn to the page in the booklet that corresponds to the card and read what it says. Tarot cards have two meanings a normal meaning (for when it is the right way up) and one for when it

My interpretation oF a single card.

card: 9 of wands.

Meaning: Losing what is loved, giving importance to things.

My interpretation: Letting go of the old. The old may be something which is loved but it needs to be freed to the light in order for a new transformation to happen. Keep and cherish the memories but do not dwell o n them too much. Keep the happiness that was attached to this thing close but keep looking forwards. The memories and happiness will always

be there but it is time to try something new. The death of an idea, but the death of this idea will give birth to something far better and far greater, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

single card spread

You may have a question that you want an answer to and it is here that your tarot cards can come into play. Close your eyes and shuffle the

cards while concentrating on your question. When you feel the urge to stop, turn over the top card and read the interpretation of it. Look closer at the images and derive your own answer from it.

is reversed (the image is upside down). The booklet may explain both meanings but, if it doesn’t, then the reverse meaning is normally the opposite of the normal meaning.

Once you have done that, take a closer look at the card. Study it. What do you

see? Reading the meaning is only half of what you’re doing. The deeper meaning lies within the picture and what it represents. Don’t just look at the picture, look at shadows, the colours and the placing of objects. If it features a person, look closely at them, at what they’re wearing,

how they’re holding themselves and if they’re holding anything in their hands.

Don’t worry if your i n t e r p r e t a t i o n is different to the book, or to other peoples. It is your personal interpretation that matters and what will matter should you go on to do

readings for other people. Follow your gut instinct when interpreting the cards. Too many people ignore their gut instinct (also called a sixth sense); now is the time to listen to it! If it feels right then it most likely is! To help you get started, I’ll give you an interpretation of a card.

Card 4: The reason behind the question (this will probably shed light on 2) (Below centre) Card 5: The potential within the situation. (Above centre)

This is a very useful spread when trying to decide a given course of action. Card 4 will often reveal a subconscious impulse - perhaps a blockage which is stopping you from achieving your desired result. Card 5 shows the possible results from taking a given course of action. The spread works best if, whilst selecting the cards, you concentrate on one aspect of the decision, rather than either/or type questions.

There are so many different spreads to choose from, as well as spells and rituals you can perform using your tarot

deck. At the end of this article, you’ll find a list of links which will include p o i n t e r s on which website to visit.

You may find it useful to keep a record of what cards you receive during every r e a d i n g . Sometimes a card (or several) will appear time and again and you’ll find yourself wondering why. Should that happen, take a look at yourself and your environment because

there may that changes are needed. Having a record of what cards have come up on a certain date will enable you to look back and see which ones are reoccurring.

3 card spread – past, present and Future

Left card – PastCentre card – PresentRight card - Future

Shuffle the cards and place the top 3 cards in a line, reading left to right. Turn the first card (furthest left) over; this is your “past” card. Read the interpretation in the book and make your own decision on what the card

means. Repeat with the final 2 cards. The middle card is your “present” card and the right hand card is your “future” card.
