In the following year, on 5 June 1975 located at Kasunanan Palace Exhibition, the agreement of establishing Joint University of Surakarta (UGS) was made. UGS had eight faculties: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Faculty of Social and Politics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sports, Faculty of Geography. Following the Coordination made by UGS to and State Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) of Surakarta, an agreement was made by PTPN Veteran of Surakarta Branch and State Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) to join the univerity by merging. The merger became the forerunner for the establishment of Univeritas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret.

On 11 March 1976, Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret was ofcially established by President of Indonesia, Soeharto, through Presidential Decree Number 10 of 1976 on the Establishment of Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret (UNS Sebelas Maret). UNS, at that time, had 9 faculties, namely Faculty of Education (FIP), Faculty of Teacher Training (FKG), Faculty of Literature and Culture (F. Sasdaya), Faculty of Social and Politics (Fisipol), Faculty of Law (FH), Faculty of Economics (FE), Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Agriculture (Faperta), and Faculty of Engineering (FT).

UNS Organization was designated through the Decree of Ministry of Education and Culture Number 03/C/Depk/76, dated 8 March 1976 concerning Temporary Leaders of UNS. The temporary ofcials (Pjs) in UNS encompass Rector, Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs, Vice Rector II for Administration and Finance Affairs, and Vice Rector III for Student Affairs. The head ofce of UNS was located in Surakarta Palace Exhibition and the lectures were conducted in several locations.

Since 1977, UNS has an integrated campus in Kentingan, Jebres, Surakarta covering +60 h from the Mayor of Surakarta on 18 October 1976 through the Decree Number 238/Kep/T3/1976.

During its development, in 1982, the name and abbreviation of Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret (UNS Sebelas Maret) was changed into Universitas Sebelas Maret abbreviated to UNS. The change of name and abbreviation was ofcially published through the Presidential Decree of Republic of Indonesia Number 55 of 1982.

HISTORY n 1953, the initative to establish a state university in Surakarta arose. Later on, in 1968, it received positive Iresponse from the Regional Government of Surakarta and was subsequently followed-up ofcially in 1972 by stipulating Data Collecting and Processing Team (P2D Team) for the preparation of State University of Surakarta

through the Major Decree (SK) Number 22/Kep/VII-1/1972 dated 1 March 1972. Through the letter number 7/pend.1/K-Dept/1972 dated 9 September 1972, the Major of Surakarta sent a “pre-proposal” on the establishment of state university in Surakarta to the Central Government through the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Afterwards, on 30 July 1973, the initiative to establish state university in Surakarta was submitted to the parliament board (DPRD) of Surakarta Municipality and was approved through the Decree of Parliament Board of Surakarta Municipality Number 5/DPRDVIII/1973 dated 22 August 1973.

Accordingly, on 14 June 1974, a coordination meeting of private universities (PTS) generated a recommendation that 12 private universities in Solo would like to merge to establish a state university. Those 12 private universities are Sports Academy of Surakarta, State Administration Academy of Surakarta, Saraswati University, Cokroaminoto University of Surakarta Branch, Islamic University of Indonesia of Surakarta Branch, and seven private universities, University of 17 August of Surakarta Branch, Journalism Institute of Surakarta, and Farming Academy.

MOTTO AND WORK CULTURE Words written in letters similar to Javanese letters are "Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara". The series of words encircling the edge of wiku's face appear as a shining praba that successfully sheds purity and nobility – it also becomes sengkala candra. Each contains the meaning: mangesti means number 8, luhur means number 0, ambangun means 9, nagara means number 1. Reading from backward results the number 1908 – that is the Javanese year for the establishment of the university in 1976.

With respect to the above-mentioned meanings which become the underlying basis, the entire academics community agreed to keep up the spirit with UNS BISA "Work Ethic of UNS ACTIVE, Internationalization, Synergy, Acceleration towards World Class University". Various steps to improve the capacity of UNS to be an autonomous, accountable, and highly competitive university have been carried out in accordance with the recognition as University of Public Service Agency (BLU) on 27 February 2009.
