    Foreword

    This booklet is the result of the activities developed and implemented

    during the Erasmus+ Funded Project, Mobility of youth workers, Earth

    ChallengeTraining for trainers in environmental field that took place

    between 03-11 of October 2015 in Sibenik, Croatia.

    The booklet will provide information on the general objectives of the

    project, the organizations implementing the project, the participating

    countries and also about the activities developed by the participants

    during these days.

    The booklet is organized in six chapters: first of all it introduces general

    facts regarding the project; the second part presents important facts

    about trees. In addition, the third part will approach the topic of water

    through interesting facts, 4

    th

    Chapter 1 The project

    Situated on the Croatian Adriatic Coast, Sibenik is the shelter andthe natural habitat for a wide range of plants and animals.

    Beautiful landscape, crystal sea, old architecture and a very rich

    Croatian culture the city became the meeting point for 26 youth

    workers to join creativity and unite experience and knowledge on

    the environment targeted project funded by the ERASMUS+

    Programme Mobility of youth workers, Earth Challenge

    Training for trainers in environmental field.

    The project was implemented in the period 03 - 10 October 2015,

    and provided space to youth workers to learn more about

    environmental issues; problems we all share related to

    environment and at the same time inspire them to develop theirskills on communication, leadership and becoming in the end

    themselves facilitators on this topic.

    26 youth workers worked on their personal development as future

    trainers in environmental field. The training was used as a platform

    for creation of new methods, activities, games, resource that canbe used in various environmental projects, workshops and

    activities and with various target groups. Participants from 5

    countries have participated in this project, Croatia, Macedonia,

    Spain, Portugal and Romania. The project main goal was to ensure

    capacity building for environmental organizations. As partners in

    many projects implemented in the past, our organizations haveidentified that many young people across Europe have some

    experience and leadership potential to become educators in

    environmental field but are not inspired to go further and become

    trainers due to various reasons. This was the need behind this

    training course. With this project we provided space for 26

    motivated young leaders to broaden their knowledge in

    environment protection and sustainable development and

    increase their own personal development and facilitation skills, sothat they become mini-educators in environmental area.

    Objectives of the project set were:

    to enrich participants knowledge about main elements in

    environmental protection and sustainable development byanalyzing, role play and active participation in interactive

    educativeworkshops;

    to ensure development of skills of participants such as

    effective communication skills, presentational and

    facilitation skills and through this to ensure creating a

    strongnetworkofyoungtrainers;

    to arm participants with resources, methods used when

    learning about environment and environmental protection

    by presenting, explaining, and practicing methods of

    facilitation and analyzing non-formal methods of learning

    used in this area, motivating participants to adopt and

    developnewworkshops,activitiesandmethodsandpublish

    kids;

    to straighten cooperation among our organizations and

    ensurecapacitybuilding.

    In the project we worked on promoting environmental protection,

    sustainable development, environmental issues, through the usage

    of non-formal methods of learning in form of games, educative

    workshops, simulation, role play, active participation. We

    promoted as well active citizenship and participation in society as a

    way to preserve nature and build green Europe. Educative

    workshops about environment elements, problems, issues were

    implemented, discussion and drawing conclusions about possible

    solutions was integral part of the workshops. Also the topic of

    sustainable development was tackled through tailored activities /

    learning by doing. The daily program allowed a lot of information

    to be shared, a lot of topics to be discussed and knowledge to be

    broadened. Participants had the opportunity to participate as well

    in so-called development workshops, where they had space to

    use their full potential and knowledge and experience in youth

    work, and work on development of workshops, methods and

    games that were later on published in this e-book Earth

    challenge. This e-book is free to download from the facebook

    page created for the project promotion and its available for

    everyone interested in environmental games and methods. E-bookEarth Challenge contains information about the project in

    general, but as well is full with recourses and activities that were

    design by the participants and that can be used as tools and

    methods in projects related to environment. Facebook page was

    developed for the purpose of promoting the project idea, project

    implementation and results. One of the results from the projectwas the design and the implementation of a local workshop with

    local kids which allowed participants on the training to experience

    what means to be a trainer and facilitator in practice. More than

    50 young kids from a local school in Sibenik took part in the local

    workshops which were designed and organized by the participants.

    These kids had the opportunity through newly created games onthe training course to learn more about environment and

    environmental protection, and participants on the other hand had

    the chance to see how their developed activities are implemented

    in practice. As a last result a set of promotional movies was

    developed and published after the project with the aim to

    promote Erasmus+ projects.

    This project was hosted by Association ARGONAUTA from Murter,

    Croatia, and implemented in cooperation with Association

    KREATOR Kumanovo, Macedonia; European Youth Parliament

    Foundation from Romania, Association Experimentaculo from

    Portugal. In addition to participants from these organizations; anon-formal group from Spain took part in the project as well.

    Quotes from participants on the training:

    We believe we can make a change, and the purpose of the

    project was to enrich our knowledge about the main elements in

    environmental protection and sustainable development by

    analyzing, playing role plays and participate actively in

    interactive workshops. I believe the project ensured us the

    development of our communication skills, presentational and

    facilitation skills.

    - Sorina, Romania

    In my opinion this project provided us with the necessary

    resources and methods used in the learning process of

    environmental issues. We used presentations, expla nations

    (very useful) and facilitation methods of learning, and we had

    the necessary means and skills to create the base for further

    activities and workshops to be implemented by us. Moreover, it

    offered us the opportunity to put into practice our knowledge

    and facilitation skills by implementing in a local school an eco-

    workshop, being able in the end to become young educators in

    the environmental field and to transmit the knowledge acquired

    during the training.

    The project gave us the opportunity to learn more about other

    people expand our horizons over our own national borders and

    get to meet other cultures. I believe that we have grown also

    professionally and socially as well because we can now to make

    a change and transmit what we have learned to everyone, no

    matter the age. I think we can be good trainers in environmental

    field

    -

    Gina, Portugal

    This project offered us the possibility to achieve several

    important things: first of all, our own development as persons

    who care for the environment, who want to become the agents

    of change and a good example for other people in this particular

    field. Secondly, we improved our knowledge and skills ascommunicators and abilities in interaction, becoming more

    flexible, good listeners and good trainers. In addition to this, we

    have learned that through good communication we can

    cooperate for the same purpose. It was a great experience

    Chapter 2 Interesting facts about trees

    Have a look at these fun tree facts. Learn how tall trees can grow, howlong they can live, how they help us breathe, what wood can be used

    for, what tree roots do and much more. Read on and have fun learning

    a range of interesting information about trees.

    Trees are tall plants made of wood;

    Trees can live for thousands of years;

    Some trees can grow to around 100 metres in height!

    The tallest species of trees in the world include the Coast

    Redwood, Giant Sequoia, Coast Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce and

    Australian Mountain Ash;

    The Giant Sequoia is not only tall, it is also wide. Because of its

    amazing size, some believe that the Giant Sequoia is the largest

    living organism in the world!

    The roots of a tree usually grow underground, helping keep it

    stable and providing it with water and important nutrients;

    Water and nutrients travel up the tree trunk, through thebranches and all the way out to the leaves;

    The trunk of a tree is protected by an outside layer of bark;

    The way a tree grows through different seasons can be seen by

    growth rings in the wood, they can even be used to determine

    the age of a tree;

    Planting trees can help prevent erosion;

    Wood from trees can be used in a number of different ways

    including as a building material and energy source (such as a

    campfire);

  • 7/25/2019 Booklet - Earth Challenge

    11/31

    A tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per

    year, and can sequester one ton of carbon dioxide by the time it

    reaches 40 years old;

    One large tree can provide a supply of oxygen for two people;

    The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to

    ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day..

    Benefits we gain from trees:

    Reduced energy use: Trees and vegetation that directly shadebuildings decrease demand for air conditioning;

    Improved air quality and lower greenhouse gas emissions: By

    reducing energy demand, trees and vegetation decrease the

    production of associated air pollution and greenhouse gas

    emissions. They also remove air pollutants and store andsequester carbon dioxide;

    Enhanced storm water management and water quality:

    Vegetation reduces runoff and improves water quality by

    absorbing and filtering rainwater;

    Reduced pavement maintenance:Tree shade can slow

    deterioration of street pavement, decreasing the amount of

    maintenance needed;

    Improved quality of life: Trees and vegetation provide aesthetic

    value, habitat for many species, and can reduce noise.

    Chapter 3 Interesting facts about water

    Enjoy our fun water facts. Learn how important water is to life on Earthas well its many amazing uses and properties. Read about ice, steam,

    snow, drinking water, oceans, water pollution, seawater, rivers the

    water cycle and much more with our huge range of interesting facts

    about water.

    Water is made up of two elements,hydrogen andoxygen. Its

    chemical formula is H2O;

    Each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms

    bonded to a single oxygen atom;

    The existence of water is essential for life on Earth;

    Water has three different states, liquid, solid and gas;

    The word water usually refers to water in its liquid state. The

    solid state of water is known as ice while the gas state of water

    is known as steam or water vapor;

    Water covers around 70% of the Earths surface;

    The three largest oceans on Earth are the Pacific Ocean(largest), the Atlantic Ocean (second largest) and the Indian

    Ocean (third largest);

    Found in the Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Trench is the deepest

    known point in the worlds oceans.

    Ocean tides are caused by the rotation of the Earth and

    thegravitationalpull of the Moon and Sun acting on ocean

    water;

    Water from a sea or ocean is known as seawater. On average,

    every kilogram of seawater contains around 35 grams of

    dissolved salt;

    The freezing point of water lowers as the amount of salt

    dissolved in at increases. With average levels of salt, seawater

    freezes at -2 C;

    The longest river in the world is theNile River, it reaches 6650kilometers in length;

    The second longest river in the world is theAmazon River, it

    reaches 6400 kilometres;

    Water makes a good solvent with many sugar, salts and acids

    easily dissolving in it. On the other hand oils and fats dont mix

    well with water;

    The water cycle involves water evaporating (turning into a gas),

    rising to the sky, cooling and condensing into tiny drops of water

    or ice crystals that we see as clouds, falling back toEarthas rain,

    snow or hail before evaporating again and continuing the cycle;

    Water in the form of ice is found at the polar ice caps of the

    planetMars,some scientists have also suggested the possibility

    of liquid water on the red planet.

    Pure water has no smell and no taste, it also has a pH level

    around 7;

    While most people know that water boils at 100 C, this is at the

    normal conditions of sea level. The boiling point of wateractually changes relative to the barometric pressure. For

    example, water boils at just 68 C on the top of Mount Everest

    while water deep in the ocean near geothermal vents can

    remain in liquid form at temperatures much higher than 100 C;

    Water expands as it cools from 4 C to 0 C (above 4 C it does

    the opposite). In freezing conditions, water has been known to

    burst water pipes as it freezes to ice;

    Most people around the world have access to clean drinking

    water but it is a major problem in poorer areas of the world.

    Water pollution and low quality water can lead to dangerous

    bacteria, disease and viruses such as E coli and Cryptosporidium;

    Drinking water is needed forhumans to avoid dehydration, the

    amount you need each day depends on the temperature, how

    much activity you are involved in and other factors;

    An important use for water is in agricultural irrigation, this iswhen water is artificially added to soil in order to assist the

    growth of crops;

    Water is used frequently by firefighters to extinguish fires.

    Helicopters sometimes drop large amount of water on wildfires

    and bushfires to stop fires spreading and limit the damage they

    can cause;

    The water industry helps deliver water to homes in various cities

    and countries around the world. This can involve services such as

    purification, sewage treatment, filtering, distillation and

    plumbing;

    Electricity can be created from hydropower, a process that uses

    water to drive water turbines connected to generators. Thereare many hydroelectric power stations around the world;

    Water also plays a role in cooking. Steaming and boiling food

    are well known cooking methods. You may have noticed this last

    time you made pasta or noodles;

    Water is also used for fun. Water sports are a very popular

    recreational activity and include things like swimming, surfingand waterskiing. Ice and snow is also used in ice skating, ice

    hockey, skiing and snowboarding.

    Chapter 4 Climate change

    Here are some facts about climate change. Learn how important climateis and how to lower our individual impact on the planet.

    Greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and

    water vapor, trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and warm the

    planet;

    In general, the greenhouse effect is a good thing. Without

    greenhouse gases, the temperature on Earth would be too cold

    to support life. With too many, it would heat up beyond

    survivable levels. Earth is sometimes called the Goldilocks

    Planetbecause it is "just right;

    Since 1958, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmospherehas been measured from an observatory on Mauna Loa, a

    volcano in Hawaii;

    The pre-industrial concentration of carbon dioxide in the

    atmosphere was 280 parts per million(ppm). As of March 2009,

    it has reached 387 ppm;

    Today, the amount of carbon dioxide is higher than at any time

    in the last 650,000 years.And the Earth's average temperature

    is increasing faster than ever before;

    The United States releasesmore carbon dioxide than any other

    country, though it is home to justfive percent of the world'spopulation. If everyone in the world lived the way people do in

    the U.S., it would takefive Earthsto provide enough resources

    for everyone!;

  • 7/25/2019 Booklet - Earth Challenge

    16/31

    The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the average family in

    Europe breaks down this way: One halffrom heating and

    cooling the house; One quarterfrom transportation; One

    quarterfrom using electricity;

    Average sea levelis expected to rise 7 - 23 inchesbefore the end

    of this century - and perhaps as much as 31 inches (if, as some

    models predict, the rate of ice melting from Greenland and

    Antarctica increases);

    All but 100 of 1,100 glaciersresearched are receding(more icemelts in summer than re-forms the next winter);

    The current pace of global average temperature rise puts

    approximately 20 to 30 percent of plant and animal speciesat

    increased risk of extinction;

    Rain forest destructioncontributes to climate change. That's

    because trees store carbon dioxide as they grow. Clearing and

    burning forests releases large amounts of carbon dioxideinto

    the atmosphere;

    Coral reefs are as important to marine wildlife as rainforests are

    to land-based wildlife. Rising seawater temperatures threaten

    their survival. The world lost about 16% of all coral reefs in

    1998, the second hottest year on record.

    Chapter 5 Sustainable development

    There are many different definitions of Sustainable Development.

    The most popular one is 'development which meets the needs of

    the present without comprising the ability of future generations to

    meet their own needs'. In other words creating a society in which

    we make prudent use of, conserve and invest in our most

    important resources- people and our natural environment.

    Consequently we must create a society in which we do not

    overstep environmental, social and economic limits.

    Sustainable Development is simply using resources efficiently,

    living within the Earths limits and using our resources in a manner

    that ensures a decent quality of life for us and our children. At the

    moment we failing to do that and in doing so we are failing the

    next generation.

    Chapter 6 Book of activities

    And our activities .

    Activity 1: Match the images

    Target:11-12 years old

    Objective of the game:

    Raising awareness upon the reactions of polluting the planet;

    Make the kids associate which action causes which reaction;

    Reflect on the topic of pollution.

    Time:10-15 minutes

    Materials needed: 10-15 cards which suggest actions of pollution(throwing the garbage on the ground, taking long baths, cars polluting

    the air etc);10-15 cards which suggest the equivalent reaction for each

    of the action chosen for the other cards (eg. If one card would suggest

    cutting trees, the reaction card of that action would be a deforested

    forest).

    Description: All the cards should be placed on one table. The task for

    each kid would be to group all the action cards with the matchingreaction cards. At the end of the game, after every kid completed the

    task, they should choose individually one action and show a point of

    view toward that topic.

    Activity 2. The web of survival

    Target:11-12

    Objective of the game:

    Explaining the consequences of climate change in the animal

    world;

    Making the kids realize how difficult it is for the animal reign to

    change their natural habitat because of climate change; Raising awareness on global warming.

    Time:20-25 minutes

    Materials needed: A long rope

    Description:The first step would be to find two trees that are parallel,close to each other. Between the two trees, using the rope, a spider

    web should be made which would have different holes of different

    sizes. The kids will stay on one side of the web and their task is to work

    as a team to pass to the other side of the web, through the holes of the

    web. The rules are that each hole from the web can be passed only by

    one kid. Every kid that touches the web (rope) will die and will get out

    of the game. The group can work together in order to succeed. The

    game will be presented as the story of a group of animals that have to

    change their natural habitat in order to survive. In the end of the game,

    the concluding discussion will underline the idea that because of climate

    change, animals are forced to change their natural habitat in order to

    survive and a lot of them wont make this transition.

    Activity 3. Iceberg Islands melting

    Target: 11-12 years old

    Objective of the game:

    Raising awareness upon the importance of saving the water;

    Global warming;

    Responsible resource sharing;

    Time: 10-15 minutes

    Materials: 3-4 Flipchart papers

    Description: The flipchart papers will be taped on the ground. The

    whole group of kids will stay on one Flipchart paper at once. They will

    have to move from one paper (island) to another, but each time theywill move, a considerable part of each paper will be wrapped, leaving

    finally only 3 small pieces of paper. All the kids will have to share the

    small islands, trying not to step out of the paper. The conclusion of the

    game is that as needs of humans will increase, the resources would

    decrease.

    Activity 4. Story of the tree

    Target:13-14

    Objective of the game:

    Tell a touching story of a tree and get the attention of the kids;

    Importance of trees;

    Time: 10 minutes

    Materials:one chocolate, one story

  • 7/25/2019 Booklet - Earth Challenge

    21/31

    Description: The kids should sit in a circle. The task is to listen to the

    story that is going to be read, and pass the chocolate every time the

    word tree is being said. The kid who has the chocolate at the end of the

    story, will keep it.

    Story:Once upon a time, there was a tree in our yard. It was the only

    shining tree in our garden, the most powerful and when you were

    looking at it, it always brought you a lot of happiness. My dear kids, do

    you remember when I told you how important is this tree for our family?

    Yes, of course you do. You know, trees are always very important

    because they give us fresh air and if we have trees in our garden, we can

    be healthier and they can provide us with a big quantity of oxygen. Out

    of all the trees from our neighborhood, THAT tree Im telling you about is

    more special. Why? Because it has a secret story behind. This tree

    signifies LIFE and it is so much related to our own attitude and behavior

    that it can change in every season. When its summer and warm outside

    and youre playing in the yard with your friends next to the tree, the tree

    becomes really stronger, shiny and happy because it is able to fulfill you

    with a lot of new fresh air. This happens in spring and summer when all

    the trees are full of happiness because people are intensively active andthey do a lot of activities together in the middle of the nature. Also, the

    trees are very happy to become shelters for all kind of birds and animals.

    When you hear the birds singing in a tree, everyone becomes extremely

    relaxed and joyful. We have a lot of benefits from trees and not only

    humans, but also the animals.

    One day, on a hot summer day, you were playing, delighted, with your

    friends in the yard and the tree next to you said: COME AND PLAY WITHME. I AM GETTING OLDER AND OLDER. The boy was happy to accept it

    because it was very hot outside and the sun was shining, while he

    wanted to have a special friend, the TREE. On the other side, during

    autumn, the tree is becoming sadder because its leaves are falling on

    the ground and its beauty is highlighted only in the greatness of the

    trees colorful leaves. On winter, the sadness of the people and their cold

    behavior make the tree be melancholic. It is the time when the tree gets

    older and older and nobody is out in the yard to play with it. People were

    taking trees inside to decorate them for Christmas, but everyone forgot

    about THAT special old tree.

    After the winter, the family decided that they should plant a new tree

    because they couldnt realize at first that trees are important in any time

    of the year, not only when people have time and not only when its
