A CREDO PRAYER OF DISCERNMENT Holy God, be in my mind that I might let go of all that diminishes the movement of Your Spirit within me. Discerning God, be in my eyes, that I might see You in the midst of all the busyness that fills my life. Loving God, be in my heart, that I can be open to those I love, to those with whom I share ministry and to the whole human family. Gracious God, be in that grace-filled silence that lies deep within me, that I might live in Christ as Christ lives in me. Amen. - The Rev. Canon James C. Fenhagen, 1930-2012

While leaving room for the movement of the Spirit, in general: An asterisk (*) will indicate where those who are able may stand; Indented, bold face text is read by all those gathered, in unison;

Indented, regular face text is read by the worship leader; Biblical texts are from the New Revised Standard Version;

Grape juice is served in the cup at communion; in all things, to God be the Glory.

PRAYER AT CLOSE OF DAY

to a deserted place all by yourselves and

REST A WHILE

* OPENING WORDS

Come, Jesus, be with us tonight. You spent your days teaching and healing. You promoted justice and inspired faith. You too were tired at the close of day.

Come, Jesus, be with us tonight. You joined your friends as the sun went down. You opened scriptures, broke bread and prayed. You laughed and talked and answered questions.

Come Jesus, be with us tonight. You listened with compassion. And you invited: “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”

Come, Jesus. Be with us tonight. Be our rest. Be our home.

* HYMN “How Lovely, Lord”

TOUCH STONES

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. Psalm 84:5 (NIV)

PRAYER OF LETTING GO

Gracious God, we come before you, weary from our comings and goings, restless about work, uneasy leaving loved ones behind.

Yet we also come to you, trusting that we are where we are supposed to be, joyous to be “in your abiding place,” hopeful for the future.

In your mercy… Grant that we might let go of the stress of today’s travel. Release us from any anxiety about what we have left undone. Deliver us from any fears that keep us from being present.

Help us to pray well and often for our loved ones at home, our communities of faith, for ourselves and for each other – and grant that these stones may be a blessing in our conversations with you.

Grant us peace of mind, willing spirits and open hearts that we might be refreshed, restored and renewed. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; 7a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

SCRIPTURE Mark 6:7, 12-13, 30-32

7He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. … 12So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. ... 30The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

MEDITATION SILENT REFLECTION PRAYER

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER

“Who am I?”

Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing

and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold. Mark 4:8

* OPENING SENTENCES

Holy Spirit, giving life to all life, moving all creatures, root of all things, washing them clean, wiping out their mistakes, healing their wounds, you are our true life, luminous, wonderful. Awaken each heart here today from its ancient sleep. Amen.
